K’s Diner is open once again. A call to the diner confirmed that as of Monday, November 18th, the restaurant is open. The diner, located at 3402 Vine Street, has been closed since November 5th 2012. The diner had closed after a fire caused by spontaneous combustion within dirty rags left on the counter caused extensive damage to the restaurant.
The diner, which was open just over a month before the fire, employed roughly 40 employees.
K’s is open 7:00 am – 10:00 pm 7 days a week. An employee at the restaurant said that staff tasted the menu recently and while she knows a few items that were added to the original menu, staff agreed it was all great.

Life changes– and so do the answers to life’s questions. The Extension Community Development program committee is offering a Community Education Series on the theme “Knowledge for Life’s Concerns.” The first two programs on aging issues and real estate concerns were held in September and October.
The final session of the series focuses on “Fraud Prevention and Cyber Security” and is set for Tuesday, November 19 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. at the Extension Meeting Room at 601 Main Street in Hays. Enter the rear door from the north parking lot.
Jeff Ridgeway from the Hays Police Department and David Kreller from Document Resources will speak on electronic privacy, identity theft protection and securing personal documents.
Senior citizens are 12 percent of the U.S. population but 35 percent of all fraud is inflicted on seniors, according to the National Council on Aging. Why? Senior citizens are most likely to have a nest egg, to own their home, and/or to have excellent credit– all of which make them attractive to con artists.
Additionally, people who grew up in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s were generally raised to be polite and trusting. Con artists exploit these traits, knowing that it is difficult or impossible for these individuals to say “no” or just hang up the telephone.
Seniors and their families are especially encouraged to attend the upcoming Extension session to learn how to protect themselves from becoming targeted victims of fraud and identity theft.
This Community Education programs is free and open to the public. Please register with the Ellis County Extension Office, 785-628-9430, in order to ensure adequate materials and supplies. Bring a lunch to enjoy during the meeting if desired. Educational materials, refreshments and door prizes are provided.
(AP) — Kansas advocacy groups are questioning a decision by the Kansas Department for Children and Families to hold $48 million in reserve funds.
said recently the agency has $48 million in reserve funds and was taking $9 million, under a program called Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, to pay for a childhood literacy program backed by Gov. Sam Brownback.
TANF is a federal program aimed at helping low-income families achieve self-sufficiency.
Karen Wulfkuhle, executive director of United Community Services of Johnson County, said that DCF shouldn’t be holding $48 million in reserve when the state has so much need.
DCF spokeswoman Theresa Freed says DCF funds several programs when it’s appropriate, and the number of people receiving TANF has been dropping.

The HaysMed Breast Care Center will become the second facility in Kansas to have digital tomosynthesis equipment.
The Hays Medical Center Foundation has received a $100,000 grant from the Dane G. Hansen Foundation, Logan, to help fund the purchase of new equipment for the HaysMed Breast Care Center.
The state of the art digital tomosynthesis equipment produces a three-dimensional image of the break and improves cancer screening and detection. It provides a clearer, more accurate view of the breast, allowing doctors to better pinpoint the size, shape and location of abnormalities.
HaysMed will be the second facility in the state, joining the University of Kansas Medical Center to have the mammography technology.
Private donations are still being sought to fund the tomosynthesis equipment. Those wishing to make a contribution may call the HaysMed Foundation at 785.623.2350.
LAS VEGAS (AP) – Tim McGraw and Faith Hill want people to accept that they have a solid marriage. Hill says she wishes people would stop buying tabloids that say their 17-year marriage is breaking up and she wishes tabloids would stop printing it. She says, “Happy is good. I don’t know why happy can’t be a story.” McGraw and Hill have launched a residency in Las Vegas that will run for 10 select weekends through April. The residency challenges even the best of marriages, because the couple flies from Nashville to Las Vegas when they have to perform. Hill says they probably won’t do any more Las Vegas shows because their oldest daughter is in high school and they want to be around for her.
