Flags fly high at the Bank of Hays, 27th and Hall Streets, which participates in the Kiwanis American Flag Project.

Red, white and blue decorate Hays on this cool cloudy Veterans Day.

U.S. flags can be seen all across town, installed early this morning by Kiwanis members for their American Flag Project.

Kiwanis Club volunteers for the fundraiser, chaired by Jerry Ubert, place flags in yards and in front of businesses for Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Veterans Day.

“We started with 50 flags a few years ago,” says Ubert.  “Today we put out 869.”

Ubert says it take about 40 Kiwanis members to install and remove all the flags.

Realtor helps catch drug thief during open house

arrest (AP) — An alert Wichita real estate agent helped police arrest a man who allegedly stole prescription drugs during an open house.

Police say the man arrested Sunday is suspected of at least two similar thefts in recent months.

Realtor Lorie Touchatt said the Wichita Area Association of Realtors recently issued a warning about the man, and a co-worker had a run-in with him last week.

Touchatt sent a text to her husband and the homeowner, asking them to call 911. While talking to the 911 operator, Touchatt says she pretended she was talking to a potential home buyer.

Police arrested the suspect a block from the house. They say he had a bottle of prescription narcotics on him that were taken from the home Touchatt was showing.

The Chevy spun out and came to rest in the south ditch.  Maldonado and passengers in the Chevy (Nancy Martinez age 37, Yancey Maldonado age 12, Erick Maldonado age 11, and Brisa Maldonado age 9) were transported to Logan County Hospital.  The truck driver was not injured.

FDA: Diet pill recall

fda-logoA diet pill is being recalled because of links to liver damage.

The Food and Drug Administration says USPlabs of Dallas is recalling OxyElite Pro products thought to have impurities. The dietary supplement is used for weight loss and muscle-building.

After linking the products to dozens of hepatitis and liver failure cases in Hawaii, investigators linked the pills to cases in a number of other states, too.

The FDA says one of the patients died, another needed a liver transplant and others are now awaiting liver transplants.

The recall followed a letter from the FDA notifying USPlabs that if the company did not initiate a voluntary recall, the FDA could by law order an immediate halt to distribution of the dietary supplements. The action marks the second time the FDA has exercised its recall authority under the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act.

Governor Brownback honors those who have served

veteransGovernor Sam Brownback today issued a statement in honor of Veterans Day.

“Veterans Day is the day we set aside solely to honor the men and women who served our nation with dignity, honor and courage.

“America’s veterans have served in all corners of the world. The debt we owe them is one that can never be fully paid. Their sacrifices ensured the freedom and safety we enjoy and often take for granted.

“I ask you to take a moment to remember those who have fought for this nation and its commitment to preserving liberty and freedom for all.

“On this Veterans Day I encourage all Kansans to fly the flag proudly today. It is a visible testament and show of appreciation to those who have served, who serve today and who will serve in the future.

“To every veteran – those who have served and those who are serving today – on behalf of the people of Kansas, I thank you.

“God bless our vets and God America.”

sewer pipe(AP) — Garden City officials are expecting to see more than $300,000 in claims filed by residents affected by a recent sewage pump malfunction at the city’s wastewater treatment plant.

The malfunction on Oct. 20 caused sewage to flood into basements of nearly 30 homes in the city’s Wilson Addition.

The city expects claims to be filed with the city’s insurance carrier to top $300,000. Mike Muirhead, public utilities director, also says the city’s insurance company hopes to have everything finalized in the next couple of weeks.

Muirhead says the problem at the wastewater treatment plant has been repaired, and additional steps are being considered to prevent a recurrence or provide an earlier warning.

The students’ mission is to conceive, design and execute a work of art to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the bank, established in 1914. The students will present their proposals to the bank in December.

The bank also has other original artworks from regional artists. But Kevin Wright, the bank’s project coordinator for the commissioned KU artwork, says it’s the first time the bank has tried this type of collaboration.

The organization will ship relief supplies and materials, including care kits, hygiene kits and relief boxes with pharmaceutical supplies which can serve up to 500 people.

Heart to Heart International is working with partner organizations in the Philippines, including Springfield-based Convoy of Hope and Hope Worldwide.
