The sky is a hazy shade of summer — and fires thousands of miles away are to blame.

Fritz Kruse of the National Weather Service in Dodge City said wildfires burning in Canada are to blame for the patch of smog hanging over northwest Kansas.

“The upper winds transport the smoke down into Kansas, depending on how the winds blow … the way the pressure systems are moving and the drift trajectory of the upper winds,” he said.

The phenomenon occurs about once a year from one direction or another, he added.

The haze will likely be blown away as fresh systems come into the area through Wednesday and into Thursday.

Health warnings have been issued in eastern Kansas, and the Associated Press reports the smoke could cause delays at Denver International Airport, as well.
