BARTON COUNTY -A Great Bend man died in accident on Friday in Barton County.

The Sheriff’s office reported deputies were dispatched just after 6:30 a.m., to the 800 block of Northwest 90 Avenue to a reported injury accident.

According to the sheriff, a passing citizen found a blue 1994 Ford Explorer in the field, south of the intersection of 90 Road and 90 Avenue south of Olmitz.

The SUV was southbound on 90 Avenue, failed to stop at the stop sign and continued south through the west ditch, became airborne, landed in a field and rolled three times.

It appears the accident occurred several hours before it was discovered according to the sheriff.

The driver was identified as Trevis Smith, 29, Great Bend.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

The area was experiencing heavy fog at the time of the crash, which may have been a contributing factor according to authorities. The accident remains under investigation.
