Workshop scheduled for Ag producers wanting to learn Excel

Farmers and ranchers wanting to learn more about using current Excel spreadsheets and even how to develop their own; can attend an Excel Spreadsheet Workshop on Monday, January 11th in Hays.

This day-long workshop will provide hands-on Excel training, and will use provided laptop computers or you can bring your own to explore and create spreadsheets. It is recommended that you have a basic understanding of Excel in order to get the most out of this workshop.

Some of the topics covered will be Estimating Machinery Costs, Budgeting & Enterprise Analysis, Calculating Principal & Interest Payments, Analysis of Livestock Economics, Tips & Tricks for Using Excel and exploring Excel decision tools currently available for Ag producers.

This Excel workshop is Monday, January 11th from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at the Ellis County Extension back meeting room at 601 Main Street, Hays. RSVP & payment of $15 in advance are due Wednesday, January 6th to Ellis County Extension, 601 Main Street, Hays.

Smoky Hill Calling Contest set for Jan. 9

Registrations are currently being accepted for the Smoky Hill Calling Contest is set from from Sunrise to Sunset Jan. 9 in WaKeeney.

The event is a 2-man team hunt, with entries accepted until 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8.

The event will feature prizes for largest youth coyote, a guaranteed payout of $500 and a raffle for a Thompson Center Venture .223 rifle.

An entry fee of $80 will include dinner, with all proceeds going to youth shooting sports.

16-year-old Kan. boy arrested for death of his grandmother

ArrestLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Lawrence police say a 16-year-old boy is in custody after his grandmother was found dead in her home.

Police Sgt. Trent McKinley says officers went to the woman’s home Monday night after the boy reported that he found his grandmother dead in her home.

McKinley says officers found obvious signs of traumatic injuries on the woman when they arrived. The boy was arrested after a police interview.

The identities of the victim and suspect have not been released.

High water in southeast Kansas closes roadways

BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. (AP) — Heavy rain has caused flooding in southeast Kansas, where several roadways have been closed because of high water.

 The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for the Spring River, which on Tuesday was at about 30 feet, or 19 feet above flood stage. The weather service says the river’s expected to fall below flood stage by Wednesday afternoon, but water was expected to hit more area highways.
A few bridges over the Spring River in southeast Kansas and southwest Kansas were closed because of the high water. Cherokee County officials also said Tuesday that several county roads are closed because of the flooding. Earlier, heavy winds and rain late Sunday also caused a passenger plane to run off the taxiway at the Wichita airport. No injuries were reported.

Man who helped suspect in Kansas officer’s death sentenced

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Topeka man was sentenced to more than two years in prison for helping the man who killed a Topeka police officer in 2014.

Randy Allen Ridens Jr., was sentenced Tuesday to two years and three months in prison for obstructing justice and possession of stolen property.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports Ridens helped Ross Preston Lane escape after Lane shot Cpl. Jason Harwood in Topeka during a traffic stop.

Prosecutors say Ridens picked up Lane after the shooting and drove him away from the scene. He was arrested in Lawrence.

Lane was sentenced to life in prison without parole for capital murder in Harwood’s death. Lane was found dead in his cell on Dec. 24. The death is being investigated.

HUTCHINSON- Fire Crews and Reno County EMS responded to a house fire just after 8a.m. on Tuesday in the 700 block of West 25th in Hutchinson.

When crews arrived, they found smoke coming from the rear of the home. Fire crews entered the residence and were met with high heat, according to a media release from Hutchinson Fire Department. The fire was located near the rear of the home next to a fireplace and the fire was controlled in 20 minutes.

One person who sustained burns to her chest, back, hands, and feet occupied the structure. She made it out and to a neighbor’s house prior to fire crews arrived.

Cause of fire is under investigation with probable cause as combustibles too close to the fireplace. Damage estimates are $75,000.

The woman whose name has not been released was airlifted to a Wichita hospital.

HUTCHINSON – Fire Crews and Reno County EMS responded to a house fire in the 700 block of West 25th in Hutchinson on Tuesday morning.

No flames were seen coming from the single story home, however smoke was coming from the front door and also out some windows.

An elderly woman was transported to a Wichita hospital for treatment of burns, according to Reno County law enforcement officials. Her name has not been released.

Cause of the fire is under investigation.

Amtrak: Kansas ridership improving

WASHINGTON (AP) — Amtrak says its Kansas ridership this year improved but slid by more than 5 percent in neighboring Missouri.

McClatchy Newspapers says the Amtrak’s Chicago-to-Los Angeles Southwest Chief served a record number of passengers, numbering more than 367,000.

That service stops at six Kansas cities, with Kansas accounting for more than 49,000 of the passengers last year, up slightly over 2014.

Missouri’s state-supported River Runner between St. Louis and Kansas City had 10,000 fewer riders this year. That ridership totaled roughly 179,000 for the year that ended Sept. 30.

Nationwide, Amtrak carried 30.8 million passengers in 2015.

Joyce Mattison, RN, MSN recently earned Nurse Executive, Advanced Board Certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

The certification is for nurses who hold administrative leadership roles in their organizations. The test consists of questions about operational structure and processes, exemplary professional practice, transformational leadership and new knowledge and innovations in nursing.

Mattison is the Director of InPatient Services at HaysMed and has been with the hospital since 1982. She has worked on several clinical units and held different administrative positions at the hospital during her time at HaysMed.

Moran listening tour coming to Northwestern Kansas

After the first of the year. U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran will continue his Listening Tour, visiting several towns through Northwest Kansas, after stops in Wichita and Hutchinson this week.

His first stop in the area will be at Red’s Family Restaurant, 222 N Pomeroy Ave., Hill City at 6:30 p.m., Jan. 4.

The following day Moran will be at the Grisell Memorial Hospital, 210 Vermont Ave, Ransom at 10 a.m.

The tour will continue at the Citizens Medical Center, 100 E College Dr., Colby at 10:45 a.m. Friday, Jan. 15., followed by a same day stop at the Northwest Kansas Technical College, 1209 Harrison Ave, Goodland at 12:30 p.m. (mountain time).

Kansas investigators seek help in solving stabbing death

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Authorities in Sedgwick County are asking for the public’s help in finding the person they say stabbed a Wichita man whose body was found in a sport utility vehicle on Christmas Eve.

The Wichita Eagle reports that a Park City police officer found 42-year-old Moises Arias-Aranda dead in a maroon, 1994 Ford Explorer shortly before 7 p.m. Dec. 24.

Sheriff’s Capt. Greg Pollock says someone in the Wichita-Sedgwick County area knows what happened to Aranda, and that that person needs to come forward to investigators.

Reminder: Hays updates holiday refuse/recycling scheule

City of Hays

Due to the observance of the New Year’s holiday, Friday, January 1, 2016, refuse/recycling route collection schedules will be altered as follows:

  • There is no anticipated change to Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday’s collection schedules.
  • Thursday and Friday’s collection schedules will be on Thursday, December 31, 2015.

Although collections may not occur on your normal day, collections will be completed during the week.

City of Hays customers that may have any questions regarding this notice should contact the Solid Waste Division of the Public Works Department at 628-7357.

Please remember to always have refuse and recycling bags out by 7:00 a.m.

It is anticipated that heavy volumes of refuse/recyclable will be encountered around the holidays. Please make sure your bags are out by 7:00 a.m. and keep in mind that the trucks have no set time schedule.

GoFundMe page established for Kan. teen who died in ATV crash

TOPEKA— Friends and family of a Kansas teen who died in an ATV accident have established a GoFundMe page to help cover costs of final arrangements, medical expenses and memorial.

Justin Branham, 16, was killed when the all-terrain vehicle he was riding hit a tree near Topeka last week, according to the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office.

Branham died at a hospital shortly after the accident Wednesday afternoon.

Sheriff Herman Jones said Branham was wearing a helmet when the three-wheel ATV he was riding went into a ditch and hit the tree.

College Choice recognizes FHSU as 2016’s most affordable option for an online degree

Figuring out which online university is legit and affordable is confusing when multiple websites claim that their programs offer the best bang for the buck, but College Choice has it figured out.

When it comes to earning an online bachelor’s degree, College Choice, an online publication dedicated to helping students and their families find the right college, ranks Fort Hays State University as the No. 1 most affordable option of 2016.

FHSU is the only university in Kansas to make the list. Costs for an online bachelor’s degree starts at $194.14 per credit hour, while the other state schools cost anywhere from $238.75 to $407.80 per credit hour.

All the colleges in the ranking are regionally accredited and offer at least five online bachelor’s options; FHSU offers 26.

FHSU tops the other 49 schools on the list, which includes Kent State, the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Oregon State University, Southern New Hampshire University, Western Governors University and Ohio University.

Several key factors went into determining the list, such as, academic quality, degree options, teaching and technical support, flexibility and total cost. Data for each university was collected using U.S. News and World Report and the National Center for Educational Statistics.
