Virtual College Student Advisory Committee members announced

FHSU University Relations and Marketing

Fort Hays State University’s award-winning Virtual College is quickly increasing in enrollment, and the Virtual College Student Advisory Committee gives students who live thousands of miles away from campus an opportunity participate.

The committee meets monthly by video conference. This is the third year the committee has existed.

The advisory committee’s major project for the year is to work alongside the Student Government Association to complete the by-laws for the first virtual student senate and hold elections for the 2016-2017 school year.

“We have asked these adult students to function similar to a university standing committee,” said Dennis King, assistant vice president for student affairs. “They have made recommendations and sent suggestions forward which have helped create policy at both the student and university level.”

Students interested in being on the advisory committee submit applications, and faculty members from each college select the members. The 2015-2016 members are:

  • Arts, Humanities and Social Science — Celia Zeinert, Sun Prairie, Wis., general studies sophomore.
  • Arts, Humanities and Social Science — Tyler Stoldt, Chanute, organizational leadership junior.
  • Arts, Humanities and Social Science — Lester Peak, Kirwin, general studies senior.
  • Business and Entrepreneurship — Cheyenne Ellard, Hays, marketing and management sophomore.
  • Business and Entrepreneurship — Michelle Snyder, Wichita, human resource management.

“I am very excited to work with this year’s committee, and I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish this year,” said Kathleen Cook, Virtual College online communication strategist.

Minor damage reported from quakes felt in Kansas

EDMUND, OK -A pair of earthquakes early Tuesday rattled residents in Kansas.

The USGS reported a 3.4 quake hit at 5:44 a.m. near Edmund, Oklahoma. Ten minutes earlier, a 4.3 quake also shook the same area.

On Monday, the USGS reported earthquakes measuring a magnitude 3.4 and 3.5 hit Perry, Oklahoma, just 90 minutes south of Wichita.

Broncos rally to beat Bengals in OT

DENVER (AP) – The Denver Broncos were able to wrap up a playoff berth by outlasting Cincinnati in a matchup of AFC division leaders.

Brandon McManus hit a 37-yard field goal to cap the first possession of overtime before DeMarcus Ware recovered AJ McCarron’s fumble to complete the Broncos’ 20-17 victory over the Bengals in Denver. McManus came through in the extra session after he hooked a 45-yarder at the end of regulation.

The Broncos’ defense allowed just 294 total yards and held the Bengals to a field goal after Cincinnati built a 14-0 lead.

Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler was 27 of 39 for 299 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions while playing with an injury to his non-throwing shoulder. C.J. Anderson had 73 yards on just nine carries, including a 39-yard scoring burst that put Denver ahead 17-14.

McCarron completed 22 of his 35 passes for 200 yards, one TD and no interceptions.

Both teams are 11-4. Denver can earn the top seed in the AFC with a win over San Diego and a loss by New England at Miami next weekend.

Cincinnati blew a chance to earn a bye in the playoffs.

Wichita State’s game again New Mexico State postponed

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State’s men’s basketball game with New Mexico State, originally scheduled for Monday night, has now been postponed indefinitely.

The schools are working to identify potential makeup dates later this season, but no decisions have been made. Season ticket holders will be notified once a plan is in place.

Winter storms played havoc on NMSU’s original travel itinerary, canceling the team’s Sunday flight from El Paso, Texas to Wichita. Continued attempts on Monday to book a replacement flight, commercial or charter, were unsuccessful.

WSU and NMSU agreed Monday morning to postpone the game at least one day. By Monday evening, both sides had given up on the possibility of playing Tuesday, either.

WSU hosts Drake at 1p.m. Thursday in its Missouri Valley Conference opener, and NMSU has a home game of its own scheduled for Wednesday night against Arizona Christian.

HUTCHINSON — The motion to suppress hearing in the murder case of a Kansas teen which started last week resumed Monday, and is in recess again.

The defense for Sam Vonachen, accused of two counts of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and aggravated arson for the death of his mom and sister, want a number of pieces of evidence suppressed.

During the hearing Monday, the defense questioned Hutchinson Police Detective Scott Carlton over a taped interview with the defendant’s father after the deadly fire.

They played audio of a 911 call made by the defendant and detectives asked the father of the teen if that was his son on the tape. The father confirmed it was.

The defense also asked Carlton why they questioned the father about his son taking a blanket and guitar from the home prior to the fire starting.

Carlton testified they were conducting the investigation as to what happened?

The defense also asked the father how his son would react if they were to ask difficult questions about the fire.

The defense wants to call one more witness prior to the hearing concluding.

Judge Trish Rose agreed to recess the hearing till Jan. 4.
Vonachen is accused of setting fire to the family home killing his mother and sister in September of 2013. His father was able to escape.

Pot bank begs for access to nation’s banking system

Pot marijuanaKRISTEN WYATT, Associated Press

DENVER (AP) — A Colorado bank for marijuana businesses had a simple request for a federal judge Monday when it went to court to seek access to the nation’s banking system.

“What do you want us to do with the money?” a lawyer for the pot bank asked.

Colorado chartered a special marijuana credit union last year. That’s because larger banks frequently shut down accounts tied to an industry that is still illegal under federal law.

But the U.S. Federal Reserve has kept the Colorado pot bank from being able to access the nation’s banking system. That’s because the Federal Reserve says the pot bank is too risky.

The judge grilled both sides but kept saying he has no power to make pot legal under federal law. He has no deadline to rule.

Kan. police department to give school officers body cameras

body cameraDERBY, Kan. (AP) — The police chief in Derby says his department will outfit its four school resource officers with body cameras as part of a pilot project.

Derby Police Chief Robert Lee says the department will spend about $7,400 on the cameras, and he anticipates the school resource officers will be equipped by March. The Wichita Eagle reports the pilot project is expected to last a year.

Lee says the police department is considering equipping all 47 of its officers with body cameras. He says cameras “are a good thing for law enforcement,” but that there are concerns over costs.

According to estimates given to department in 2014, Lee says it would cost around $170,000 to equip all officers with cameras and buy server space for the first several years of footage.

Trial set in lottery jackpot-fixing case involving Kansas

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A judge has delayed the trial for a former lottery official accused of fixing jackpots in several states.

Former Multi-State Lottery Association security director Eddie Tipton had been scheduled to stand trial Jan. 6 in Des Moines.

But Tipton waived his right to a speedy trial last week, and his attorney asked for a delay. Judge Jeffrey Farrell last week reset the trial for July 18.

Tipton has pleaded not guilty to charges of ongoing criminal conduct and money laundering.

Prosecutors allege that he used his access to random number generators to fix jackpots in Colorado, Wisconsin, Oklahoma and Kansas, and worked with associates to play winning numbers and collect prizes.

A jury in July convicted Tipton of fraud for fixing a $16.5 million Hot Lotto jackpot in Iowa.
