Ellis Co. Commission approves cleaning contract, roof repairs

By JONATHAN ZWEYGARDT
Hays Post

The Ellis County Commission approved a three-year agreement with Clean-Rite of Hays to provide janitorial services at the county’s Emergency Services Building at Monday’s commission meeting.

The Buildings and Grounds department provides cleaning and janitorial services for all county buildings, but with the addition of the new county Health Department building on Canterbury, the commission approved to contract for janitorial services at one county building.

“We’re just adding buildings, but we don’t add staff,” said Commissioner Barb Wasinger while making the motion to approve the contract.

County Administrator Phillip Smith-Hanes said Clean-Rite will only be responsible for cleaning the office space. EMS personnel will maintain the living quarters.

The first year of the contract is for $5,200 and it is subject to an annual renegotiation.

Under the agreement, Clean-Rite will also provide services for the offices at 601 Main and 2507 Canterbury if Building and Grounds is short-staffed for an additional $26 per hour.

In other business, the commission approved a contract with Roofmasters to repair the roof and add a slight pitch to the building at 2507 Canterbury.

That building — the future home of the county Health Department – suffered roof damage during a recent high-wind event. It was also determined that, because the roof is flat, water pools on the roof and a slight pitch should be added.

The county’s insurance through Kansas County Association Multiline Pool (KCAMP) will cover approximately 71 percent of the cost of the work, or $23,784.54. The remaining $9,715 will come from the Administrator Contingency account.

The commission was scheduled to discuss funding for an indoor youth training facility but moved the item to next week’s meeting.

The commission also read a proclamation declaring April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and another proclamation declaring April National County Government Month.

The commission also met in an executive session to discuss individual rates of pay for three employees. No action was taken.

Just after 8:30a.m. Tuesday police were dispatched to shooting call in the 10,000 Block of West Greenfield in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson. A man called 911 to report a woman was at his door with a gunshot wound.  She was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries, according to Davidson.

An investigation revealed a disturbance had occurred in a residence in the 9900 Block of West Yosemite between a 58-year-old woman and her 27-year-old son, according to Davidson. Officers arrived at the location to further investigate the incident.  One officer on the way to the scene saw a vehicle overturned on Tyler Road. The 27-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Davidson.  Police confirmed he was the individual involved in the earlier disturbance.

Police are still working to determine what happened that prompted the shooting scene and at the accident scene, according to Davidson.

Police did not release names of the victims.

Kansas lawmakers advance rival education funding proposals

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Republican legislators in Kansas have advanced two rival plans that increase funding for public schools in hopes of satisfying a state Supreme Court mandate.

The House approved a bill Tuesday that would phase in a roughly $520 million increase in education funding over five years. The 71-53 vote sent it to the Senate.

But a special GOP-controlled Senate committee on school finance approved its own bill Tuesday. It would phase in an increase of $274 million over five years while targeting much of the new money to early childhood education. A Senate debate is next.

Many Democrats question whether either plan would satisfy the Supreme Court.

The court ruled in October that the state’s current spending of more than $4 billion a year is not sufficient under the state constitution.

New doctor joins Gove Co. Medical Center’s outpatient clinic

Curry

QUINTER — Gove County Medical Center has announced Dr. E. Patrick Curry, M.D. for a new outpatient clinic beginning April 23.

Dr. Curry is a Board Certified orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in the spine such as cervical, thoracic, and lumbar disorders. He treats disk herniations, spinal stenosis, spinal cord compression and spinal deformity.

Dr. Curry performs procedures ranging from microdiskectomy to complex revision surgery. He especially enjoys helping patients regain quality of life lost to disability and pain caused by spinal pathology.
Born in Pennsylvania, he received a B.A. in Philosophy, and later attended Georgetown University School of Medicine. Dr. Curry completed his internship and residence at Thomas Jefferson University. He has gained expertise in a full range of advanced spine surgery techniques, including minimally invasive surgery, complex adult deformity, oncologic reconstruction and high energy trauma. Dr. Curry joined the team of surgeons at Western Orthopaedics in Denver, and is a colleague of Dr. Hatzidakis and Dr. Sears, who currently conduct outpatient clinics at Gove County Medical Center.

Dr. Curry’s philosophy of back surgery is this: “Spinal disorders are complex and the approach to treatment should be tailored to each patient. Many problems can be managed without surgery but when nonoperative treatment fails, surgery can help relieve pain and improve function. The decision to proceed with surgery is an important one and must be made with an understanding of the risks, benefits and alternatives to surgical intervention. As your surgeon, I will carefully explain your diagnosis, imaging results and treatment options so that you can make the decision that is best for you.”
