SBA grants a disaster declaration for May tornadoes in Kansas

TOPEKA —The U.S. Small Business Administration has approved Governor Laura Kelly’s request for a SBA disaster declaration as a result of the severe storms and tornadoes that occurred May 28, 2019.

“I am pleased that Kansas has been granted this request by the Small Business Administration,” Kelly said in media release from her office.

“These loans will do much to help speed recovery for our citizens and the business communities that lost property due to these storms”

The disaster declaration makes SBA assistance available to businesses and residents in Douglas, Franklin, Jefferson, Johnson, Leavenworth, Miami, Osage and Shawnee counties.

Beginning Tuesday, June 18, SBA representatives will be on hand at two Disaster Loan Outreach Centers to answer questions about SBA’s disaster loan program, explain the application process and help individuals complete their application. Both centers will be open from June 18 through June 27. No appointment is necessary.

In Douglas County, the Disaster Loan Outreach Center will be located at Peaslee Technical Training Center – Classroom B, 2920 Haskell Ave., Lawrence. Hours of operation will be Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

In Leavenworth County, the Disaster Loan Outreach Center will be a Linwood Community Center – Commons Area, 105 E. Third St., Linwood. Hours of operation will be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Businesses of all sizes and private nonprofit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory and other business assets. SBA can also lend additional funds to businesses and homeowners to help with the cost of improvements to protect, prevent or minimize the same type of disaster damage from occurring in the future.

For small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations of any size, SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster. Economic injury assistance is available regardless of whether the business suffered any property damage.

Disaster loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property.

Interest rates can be as low as 4 percent for businesses, 2.75 percent for private nonprofit organizations and 1.938 percent for homeowners and renters with terms up to 30 years. Loan amounts and terms are set by SBA and are based on each applicant’s financial condition.

Ellis, Osborne, Smith Center each receive $1M grant for new pools

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Commerce is awarding a special series of Community Development Block Grants to 11 communities across Kansas.

The eligible activities in this category included a single pool of water. This can be the construction or reconstruction of a city Neighborhood Center (i.e. pool) and can include a maximum of two diving boards.

Only items necessary for a viable safe facility will be allowed (i.e. bath house, life guard chairs, a few benches/tables, fencing, necessary accessibility items and items needed for cleaning and disinfecting).

The city should consider an appropriate size based on population and ability to maintain.  Facilities may be designed to allow for extra features in the future but cannot be part of the application (for example: If a slide is wanted that the application does not allow, the Neighborhood Center can be designed to allow the installation after the project is closed).

Grants are being awarded to the following communities:

  • The City of Baxter Springs will receive $960,000 in CDBG funds to rebuild the city swimming pool and provide ADA improvements to the bathhouse. Matching funds will be provided in the amount of $640,000 in city funds.
  • The City of Blue Rapids in Marshall County is awarded $763,411 in CDBG funds. The City will use $508,942 in bonds for their matching funds. The funds will be used to demolish and rebuild a zero-entry swimming pool.
  • The City of Caldwell is being granted $961,000 in CDBG funds to construct a fundamental pool. The City will supply $672,143 in matching funds secured with bonds.
  • The City of Caney will receive $1,000,000 in funds from the CDBG program. Bonds will be used by the city to provide $1,208,000 in matching funds. The city has chosen to construct their almost 4,000 square foot neighborhood center to include a bathhouse.
  • The City of Clyde is granted $1,000,000 in CDBG funds to assure the bathhouse complies with ADA, as well as, the construction of a zero-entry pool. The City employees will demolish the existing structure with force account labor estimated at $16,620 and $682,980 in bonds will be used to complete the project.
  • The City of Conway Springs will create their 19,250 cubic feet neighborhood center through a CDBG grant for $892,121. Also, matching funds in the amount of $594,748 will be made available. This improvement includes a diving board, lifeguard chairs and ladders.
  • The City of Ellis in Ellis County will receive $1,000,000 in CDBG funds to construct a new basic swimming pool with one diving board and fencing. The City is also contributing $850,500 of their local funds.
  • The City of Moundridge will use $1,000,000 in CDBG funds to establish their 4,000 square feet neighborhood center. The City will provide $1,375,768 in bonds to match the grant funds.
  • The City of Osborne is being awarded $1,000,000 in CDBG funds to construct a pool with benches and shade canopies. The City will provide matching funds in cash for $22,000. The total of $1,108,109 was collected from fundraisers, donations and other grants. In addition, the city employees will supply force account labor estimated at $23,977.
  • The City of Smith Center will receive $1,000,000 in CDBG funds and provide $700,206 in matching funds from the city. The monies will be used to demolish and reconstruct a 125,000 gallon zero-entry pool.
  • The City of Yates Center in Woodson County is being awarded $1,000,000 in CDBG funds to complete a new swimming pool and bathhouse. This facility will meet all accessibility requirements and is located at 310 West Chellis. The City will provide matching funds in the amount of $729,155.

Clinton ‘Clint’ Jensen Jr.

Clinton “Clint” Jensen Jr. was born April 16, 1945 to Clinton, Sr. and Lenora (Williams) Jensen in Leesville, Louisiana.

Clint graduated from Miltonvale High School in 1963. After high school he attended a school in Denver, Colorado where he became a certified mechanic. This career path was not only his job but his hobby as well. Clint spent many years working as a mechanic at the station on highway 24 outside of Miltonvale.

In between his full days at the station, he still found time to do some farm work. Clint had a love for cars, but he had a particular love for the 1955 Chevy. He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother in law Bill.

Private family services will take place at a later date.

Robert L. Russell

Robert L. Russell, age 86, died on Thursday, June 13, 2019, at the St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. He was born on June 5, 1933, in Garden City, Kansas the son of Marian and Lula Edith Heinlan Russell.

On October 3, 1933, he married Shirley A. Sullivan Raton, New Mexico. She survives.

Other survivors include:

One Son: Ryan J. Russell of WIchita, Kansas

One Brother: John D. Russell of Wichita, Kansas

He was preceded in death by his parents, 10 brothers and sisters, and one son, Robin Russell.

Private family interment will be held at a later date at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City, Kansas.

A celebration of life service will be held at the Sleep Inn from 2:00 to 4:00 on Saturday, June 22, 2019.

Memorials may be made to the Robert Russell Memorial Fund in care of Price and Sons Funeral Home.

Charles Robert Homm

Charles Robert Homm, 77 years of age, of Oakley, passed away Sunday, June 9th at Logan County Hospital in Oakley, KS. Charles was born in Colby, KS to Agnes and George Homm, Oct 23, 1941. He attended Oakley Public School and graduated in 1960.

Charlie LOVED Oakley and never left his hometown. From his first job running the Conoco Station at HWY 40/83 (before I-70 existed) to running his own business, he was Oakley. He was an excellent historian of all Oakley. Up until his passing he would enjoy his 2 hour car rides around Oakley, revisiting the past and telling what was there and when. His family was always fascinated in his profound memory of things in Oakley. Dementia had set in recently, but anything about his hometown and those he grew up with were ‘spot on’ in recalling. He loved Oakley, his home.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, George Homm and Agnes (Albers, Homm) Wharton; his brothers, George Jr. and Alfred Homm; sisters, Pauline Blair, Betty Schuster and Barbara Gallentine, and son-in-law Greg Sander.

He is survived by Joyce, his wife of almost 55 years; son Randy Homm; daughter Wendy (Sander) Schwarz and two grandchildren Kyle Sanders & Kaylee Schwarz.

Much love to everyone to took part in his life.

ICE, Homeland Security arrest man in Kan. for alleged attempted commercial sexual exploitation

SHAWNEE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on sex charges.

Just before 9a.m. Monday, police concluded a joint human trafficking investigation in partnership with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

As a result of the investigation, law enforcement officers arrested 35-year-old Evan H. Vollerthum of Naples, Florida on requested charges of aggravated human trafficking and attempted commercial sexual exploitation of a child.

Vollerthum was taken into custody in the 3100 Block of SW Topeka Blvd. and he is being held in the  Shawnee County Department of Corrections.

Late Liberal run ends Larks 12-game win streak

LIBERAL – The Liberal Bee Jays scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error in the eighth inning and beat the Hays Larks 5-4 to snap Hays’ 12-game winning streak Monday night at Brent Gould Field.

The Larks scored runs in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead but the Bee Jays answered with four in the fourth.

Hernan Yanez two-out single scored George Southerland with the tying run in the sixth.

Drake Angeron, Justin Lee and Southerland all drove in runs.

Rustin Hays (1-1) allowed the one unearned run on one hit in 2 2/3 innings of relief and takes the loss after starter Christian Pearcy gave up four runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

The Larks are now 13-2 overall and 4-1 in the KCLB Jayhawk West Division. Liberal improves to 10-4 and 1-0 in the KCLB Jayhawk West.

Game two of the four-game series is Tuesday night.

Soler’s late-game heroics lift Royals to victory over Mariners

SEATTLE — Jorge Soler hit a two-out, two-run homer in the eighth inning off Anthony Bass, and the Kansas City Royals rallied for a 6-4 win over Seattle on Monday night, snapping a nine-game losing streak to the Mariners.

After the Royals were shut down for most of the night by Tommy Milone, the combo of Alex Gordon and Soler put Kansas City in front. Bass (1-2) easily retired the first two batters of the inning before Gordon singled up the middle. Soler followed by driving a 1-1 pitch on the outside corner out to deep right-center field for his 19th home run of the season.

Martin Maldonado added a solo home run in the ninth.

Brian Flynn (1-0) got the victory by working two innings of relief after Danny Duffy and striking out four. Jake Diekman got the final two outs of the eighth with the tying run at second base, but Ian Kennedy faced trouble in the ninth. He allowed the first two batters to reach before striking out J.P. Crawford and Domingo Santana, then got a pop out by Tim Beckham to finish his eighth save.

Seattle took a 4-2 lead in the fifth on a three-run homer from Tom Murphy, but Kansas City was able to add a key run in the seventh inning. Jorge Bonifacio doubled leading off to end Milone’s streak of 11 straight retired and scored when Maldonado’s sinking liner was caught on a dive by Mac Williamson in left field. Williamson had no play at the plate.

Duffy was rolling until the fifth, when he walked two to bring up Murphy with two outs. Murphy was moved up to fifth in Seattle’s batting order for the first time this season, and the decision paid off with his eighth home run in his 28th game.

Duffy allowed seven hits and struck out four.

For the third straight start Seattle used an opener before letting Milone take over and the results continued to be mixed. The Mariners’ openers have struggled — this time Tayler Scott, who allowed two runs and recorded two outs — but Milone has thrived. Milone threw 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run and three hits. He struck out six and walked none.

In his three appearances where Seattle has used an opener, Milone has pitched 17 2/3 innings and allowed five earned runs.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: 3B Hunter Dozier began a rehab assignment with Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Monday. Dozier leads the Royals with a .314 batting average but has been out since injuring his right oblique May 30. Dozier went 1 for 4 and drove in two.

Mariners: Seattle manager Scott Servais had a long list of injury updates. Most notable, OF Mitch Haniger (ruptured testicle) is expected to resume light activity this week, even if he’s still a few weeks from being ready. RHP Hunter Strickland (lat strain) was expected to resume playing catch in the next couple of days after having a setback in his rehab. RHP Chasen Bradford (forearm) is also expected to start throwing in the next few days.

UP NEXT

Royals: RHP Homer Bailey (5-6) snapped a five-start winless skid throwing six scoreless innings against Detroit in his last start. Allowed season-high seven earned runs to Seattle in April.

Mariners: LHP Yusei Kikuchi (3-4) looks to pitch beyond the fifth inning for the first time in his past four starts. Kikuchi hasn’t pitched into the sixth since May 19, also his last win.

TMP-Marian Monarchs 17U sweep Kinsley

KINSLEY, Kan. – One week after sweeping Kinsley in a doubleheader at home, the Hays Monarchs 17U baseball team did the same thing on the road. Monday the Monarchs swept Kinsley 9-5 and 8-0.

TMP scored seven of their nine runs in the first game in the first two innings. They took advantage of three Kinsley errors to score four runs in the first inning.

Jace Wentling gave up three unearned runs without allowing a hit in the first inning but picked up the win. He also drove in two runs.

Mark Rack and Nick Helget combined to throw a no-hitter in the second game. Rack pitched the first four innings and struck out nine while walking only one. Helget fanned two in one inning of work.

TMP scored six runs in the second inning to improve to 5-7 on the season.
