Emergency responders were called to the scene of a two-truck collision about 8:30 this morning at the intersection of Toulon and Feedlot Roads northeast of Hays.
The vehicles involved are a water truck and a chemical truck. There are reports of injuries to the drivers.

Elvera Beiker is 92 years old, but she has the energy of someone half her age.
As a member of the Rooks County Health Center Auxiliary she has volunteered at the blood drives in Plainville for many years. Beiker has served as coordinator the past two years.
The American Red Cross blood drive December 13 in Plainville is in honor of Beiker.
“Elvera has quite a sense of humor,” said Red Cross Donor Recruitment Representative Cathy Younger. “She organizes the drives, recruits all of the volunteers, and doesn’t let any donor leave without having made an appointment for their next donation.”
“I’ve found it very rewarding to be able to help people in need,” said Beiker. “I enjoy seeing the donors at each drive and I will continue to help with the blood drives here as long as I can!”
The December 13 blood drive is from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 204 N. Irving, Plainville.
For the first time in its nearly fifty year history, Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland hosted its opening home men’s and women’s NJCAA college basketball games Tuesday night in Goodland’s Max Jones Fieldhouse.
The Lady Mavericks lost the first home opener to Otero CC from La Junta, Colorado, 79 to 58. The Maverick Men avenged an earlier loss to Colby Community College from Colby, Kansas, beating the Trojans 75 to 72 to the delight of the packed house witnessing the inaugural event.
The Maverick Basketball program is led by head coaches April O’ Neal for the women and Jase Herl for the men.
Two years ago Northwest Tech created their first athletic program for competition within the NJCAA, featuring men’s and women’s wrestling, women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, dance team and rodeo. In the spring of 2013 NW Tech will add men’s and women’s track and field and cross county to their busy athletic program.
The first time the Hays VFW Post 9076 Ladies Auxiliary entered, they won–first place in the national VFW “Buddy” Poppy display contest.
Poppy chairman Arilla Wear, with help from her fiance Brandon Clark, who is a military veteran, and a friend still serving, created the display.
It features the story of the VFW Buddy Poppy, and the famous poem from World War I, “In Flanders Fields The Poppies Blow.” A cut-out of the WWII Iwo Jima memorial is front and center.
A second display was made by auxiliary member Thea Beckner for the decorative category. It features a replica of the Statue of Liberty torch made entirely of Buddy Poppies. Beckner’s entry took first place in the state contest.
Both table top exhibits have been displayed at various veterans-related programs this month.

The mild fall weather has allowed local golfers to keep playing on the Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course, and now they can resume using the back nine holes which was closed for some time.
New irrigation was installed this spring and the turf reseeded early this fall. “It went really well,” says Jeff Boyle, Director of Hays Parks.
Whenever the ambient air temperature is cooler than 40 degrees, the course is closed. “The ’40-Degree Rule’ has to do with the frost on the grass. It (the grass) can be easily damaged by footprints or wheels on golf carts,” he says.
The annual Hays Area Children’s Center Christmas Tree Auction is a favorite kickoff to the holiday season.
The fundraiser supports programs and services for families including Infant/Toddler Early Intervention; Healthy Start Home Visitor Program, Child Care Aware of Northwest Kansas; and Licensed Child Care.
A special recognition during Saturday night’s event at the Fox Pavilion was given to The Hays Pediatric Center.
The fully-decorated Christmas trees up for auction included themes of Patriotism, Warm Hands Warm Heart, Breast Cancer Awareness, Joy to the World, Wine, Dining Out, Date Night, and Turquoise Sparkle, along with sports favorites FHSU, KSU, KU OSU, and Nebraska.
The Kansas Outdoor Writers Association annual conference opens in Russell Sunday.
Writers, cartoonists and photographers will be in Russell County to hunt the area and then share their stories in their respective media outlets about their western Kansas experience.
Russell County Economic Development Director Janae Talbott says the event has usually been held in held in Junction City. “We’re glad to have them here and hope to hand off the conference to other areas in far west Kansas in the coming years, ” she says.
The November 5th fire at K’s Homestyle Diner, 3402 Vine Street, was caused by spontaneous combustion.
According to Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler, a video camera inside the restaurant was retrieved by investigators who then watched video of a pile of rags in the kitchen area heat up and ignite.
The diner opened October 1 in the former Village Inn location.
Co-owners Kim Leiker and Kari Geerdes have said they plan to reopen the restaurant where about 40 people were employed.
Popular early morning Hays radio personalities, Mike Holliday, Country Bull Y-102, and Dustin Armbruster, Mix 103, joined Roosevelt Elementary School third-graders Wednesday morning for “Read Your Heart Out.”
All three classes gathered in Amy Mayo’s classroom to listen to Holliday as he read “Mickey McGuffen’s Ear,” followed by Armbruster reading the classic “Where The Wild Things Are.”
The day-long event was part of National Young Reader’s Week.
Each third-grader brought books and magazines from home, plus their own pillow for comfortable reading throughout the entire day.
Other celebrity readers included Hays Mayor Troy Hickman and FHSU football coaches and players.
Although the numbers changed, the results remain the same.
Ballots from the November 6th Ellis County election were canvassed by county commissioners Monday. The vote totals are different that what was recorded on Election Day.
According to County Clerk Alberta Klaus, a worker running the paper ballot counter did not clear the machine of advance ballots, so they were counted twice. The duplicated number was subtracted and the 247 provisional ballot were included.
The final voter turnout percentage is 65 percent.
For 28 years, the Hays Optimist Club has been distributing dictionaries to all Ellis County sixth grade students and teachers.
Members handed out 322 Merriam-Webster dictionaries Tuesday at Hays Middle School and at Holy Family Elementary. They also traveled to schools in Victoria and Ellis.
“Over 10,389 dictionaries have been distributed the past 28 years,” according to project chairman Gary Wentling. “The project is funded by our annual sale of natural Christmas trees.”
The Optimist Christmas tree lot opens the day after Thanksgiving, November 23, in the Wal-Mart parking lot.
Veterans Day was celebrated Friday at Roosevelt Elementary School in Hays. The students invited their favorite veterans to a luncheon in the library, complete with tablecloths and cloth napkins.
Third-grader Jada Thomas dined with her grandpa Frankie Thomas, Hugoton. He served in the Vietnam War in 1968-69. “I had a really good time ’cause I don’t get to see my grandpa very much,” said Jada.
This was the second year for the event, which features homemade food. The menu, coordinated by teachers Gay Flax Tracy Henning, included ham and scalloped potatoes. “The school cooks made rolls for us and the other teachers and volunteers brought homemade desserts, ” said Flax.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to say ‘Thank You’ to the veterans and to learn about the freedoms they have given us.”

Among the servicemen and women participating in Monday’s Veterans Day celebration at the Hays VFW Post 9076, at least nine wars or conflicts were represented: Vietnam, WW II, Korea, Desert Storm, Iraq, Granada, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Joint Endeavor.
Featured speaker Gordon Gorton, a Vietnam War veteran and former Russell resident now living in Salina, talked about how much it means veterans who are remembered and thanked for their service.
Guest speaker Sen. Allen Schmidt, D-Hays, who just lost his bid for election to the 40th senate district, is a retired Army Colonel after 32 years in the Medical Service Corps. He offered what he called a a “message of hope.”
There are hundreds of thousands of returning veterans, Schmidt said, “tried in ways only other veterans understand. We need to invite them into our organizations. We need them to step up into leadership positions in our government–local, state and federal. ”
