The Hays High wrestling team started the season with a dual tournament at Campus High School on Saturday. The Indians finished the day tied with two other teams for first place at a 4-1 record. The tie between Hays, Junction City and Campus was broken by number of pins during the day’s five matches.
After the pins were totaled, Campus was awarded first place, Junction City second and Hays third.
London Summers, Kreighton Meyers, and Logan Schulte each took first place on the day. Corey Hale, Colton Vajnar, Chase Voth, and Trey VanPelt were each second place finishers. Jordan Zimmerman and Kyler Casper placed 3rd.
The Hays High Indians took part of their first Hays City Shootout championship game since 2006 as they played St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday night. Hays entered the game at #9 in 4A-D1 and St. Thomas Aquinas at #1 in 5A.
Aquinas hit their first five shots of the game, three of which were three pointers, to build a 13-4 lead. Hays cut the lead down to 15-7 on a Tasiah Nunnery three but the Saints finished the first quarter on a 7-0 run for a 22-7 lead. Aquinas outscored Hays 15-14 in the second quarter. At one point the Saints lead swelled to 21 until Hays scored the final five of the half to trail 37-21.
Highlights
Brooke Denning knocked in a three pointer to start the third quarter and cut the Saints lead down to 37-24. Aquinas then went on the game clinching 18-0 run to go up 55-24. Hays trailed 55-29 after three quarter and fell by the final score of 63-36.
Brooke Denning scored a team high 13. Denning and Savannah Schneider were each named to the All-Tournament team. Tara Hertel was selected to the Academic team.

Hays High used an 11-2 run to start their semi-final game against Great Bend on Friday night. The lead grew as high as 20 for the Indians following runs of 9-0 and 8-2 in the second quarter. A Panther free throw in the final 20 seconds brought the score to 28-9 at half.
Hays shot just 32 percent in the first half, but forced 13 turnovers and held Great Bend to 2 of 20 shooting.
Highlights
Hays never led by less than 17 points the entire second half as they cruise on to a 57-36 victory. The Indians fought through foul trouble in the second half leading by 18 after three quarter 45-25. Hays opened the fourth quarter on a 8-0 run to help put the ball game away.

Brooke Denning led the way with four three pointers and a career high 17 points. Four more players scored seven or more points for the Indians. Hays improves to 2-0 on the season and will play the top ranked team in 5A St. Thomas Aquinas for the tournament championship. It is the first championship appearance for the Lady Indians since 2006.

Hays 82 – Life Prep 52
The Hays High Indians trailed just one time in a thirty point win over Life Prep 82 – 52. The Indians trailed 3-0 then took off on a 11-0 run to take the lead for good. Life Prep never let the Indians get a comfortable lead in the first half with Hays leading 40-32 at half time.
Highlights
Hays outscored Life Prep 42-20 in the second half and moves to 2-0 on the season. The Indians were led by Tradgon McCrae with 16 points. Ethan Nunnery and Peyton Kieffer each scored 11. Cade Swayne chipped in 10.

The Hays High Indians opened the season hosting the Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout on Thursday against Olathe North.
Girls
Hays 51 – Olathe North 30
Hays jumped out to a 11-2 lead, scoring two field goals in the first 19 seconds of the first quarter. The closest Olathe North would get in the first frame was at 4-2. The Indians continued to build the lead throughout the first quarter leading 22-6 at the close of first eight minutes.
Hays had their lead at 20 on two occasions in the second quarter and led 33-16 at half time.
Girls Highlights
Neither team could find a rhythm in the third quarter. Hays outscored Olathe North 6-4 over the eight minutes to increase their lead to 39-20.
Hays cruised on to a 51-30 victory over Olathe North to move onto the semi-finals to face Great Bend. The Indians got a game high 19 from Savannah Schneider and 11 out of Brooke Denning.

Both Hays and Olathe North came out willing to fire away on the offensive side. The two teams combined for 77 shots in the 40-32 lead for Olathe North at half time. The Eagles jumped out to an 8-2 lead only to see Hays score six straight to tie the game. Olathe North then embarked on a 16-4 run into the second quarter that put their lead at 24-12. The Indians would fall behind by as many as 17 before hitting three straight threes at the end of the first half for a 9-0 run and a 40-32 deficit.
Boys Highlights
Ethan Nunnery hit a three pointer to open the second half and cut the lead down to 40-35 in favor of Olathe North. The Eagles then went on a 11-0 run, then backed that up with a 14-0 run after Hays got with in ten. The Indians were down 70-46 after three quarters and fall 93-76.
Ethan Nunnery led the way for Hays with 18. Cole Murphy added 14, Peyton Kieffer and Tradgon McCrae each scored 11. Tymer Jackson led four Eagles in double figures with 26 points. The two teams combined for 149 shots in the game.

Fort Hays State moved to 5-0 after winning their final tune up prior to MIAA play on Saturday as they beat Sterling College 90-48.
The Tigers used an 18-0 run in the first quarter after the Warriors had tied the game at two. Fort Hays ran the lead up to 20 by the end of the first quarter at 28-8. Carly Heim scored 11 first half points and Emma Stroyan was also in double figures with 10 after the first half.

The best run that Sterling put together was an 8-2 rally in the third quarter. Fort Hays State led 67-35 after three quarters and cruised to a 90-48 victory.
Highlights
Tatyana Legette led the way with 16 points. Kacey Kennett scored 14, Emma Stroyan 12, Carly Heim and Whitney Clampitt each scored 11. Kyleigh Kasper led the Tigers in rebounding with nine and chipped in nine points as well. The Tigers held a 56-23 edge on the boards.
Fort Hays State moves to 5-0 and will take on Missouri Southern on Thursday to open MIAA play.
It’s a long drive from Hays, Kansas to Nashville, Tennessee…820 miles long to be accurate. But when the call came for a chance to kick along with a full academic scholarship Lane Clark jumped at the chance.
Eagle Radio’s Dustin Armbruster had a chance to catch up with former Hays High Indian Lane Clark as he gets ready to graduate from Tennessee State University. Clark, a four sport high school athlete, was the kicker for the TSU Tiger’s football team the past four seasons.

Clark started to get national attention after breaking the school record for longest field goal twice in the same game his junior season. He hit a 54 yard field goal to establish the school record, only to outdo himself later in the game with a 57 yard make.
So far he has been named to eight preseason and postseason All-American teams with more awards possible after this 2017 season.
Lane Clark will graduate in December, three and half years after stepping foot on campus.
Tatyana Legette had an all-conference type of game as the Fort Hays State Tigers beat the Newman Jets 76-63 on Saturday afternoon in Hays. Legette recorded the first 15 point and 15 rebound game since Kate Lehman with a 17 point and 15 rebound night. She also added seven assists, three steals, and two blocks.
Newman led twice early in the game and then Fort Hays State took a 7-6 lead. It was a lead they would never relinquish. The Tigers led by four at then of the first quarter. Each team scored 25 points in the second quarter for a 38-34 half time score in favor of Fort Hays State.
Highlights
Newman got within two points just once in the third quarter as the Tigers built their first double digit lead in the final two minutes of the quarter. Fort Hays led by twelve after three quarters and held off Newman for a 76-63 win.
Taylor Rolfs added 13 points. Kacey Kennett scored 12 and Whitney Clampitt added 10. The four helped offset the 19 by Cheney Freshman Haley Albers for the Newman Jets.

Fort Hays State used a 33-6 run to eliminate any doubt of the outcome against UC-Colorado Springs on Friday night at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Mountain Lions led 5-3 early when the Tigers rally began. Tatyana Legette scored two of her game high nineteen to give Fort Hays State a lead they would never let go of at 7-5.
The Tigers shot 62% from the field in the first quarter and hit five of ten three pointers to help the cause. In the end Fort Hays State shot 40% for the game while hold UCCS to just 29% in the 81-51 victory.
Highlights
Whitney Clampitt matched Legette’s 19 points. Taylor Rolfs scored 11 first quarter points on her way to 15 in the game. Kacey Kennett added 14.
The Tigers move to 3-0. UCCS drops to 0-3.

Earlier in the day Nebraska-Kearney beat Newman 79-74 in overtime. UNK will play UCCS at 2:00 on Saturday. The Tigers return to the hardwood following that game to take on the Newman Jets.
Seven Hays High football players were named to the All-WAC football teams following the 2017 season. On the offensive side of the ball Dante Blackmon was named first team as a lineman and Hunter Brown as a first team skill player. Named to the first team on the defensive side of the ball was Dylan Schmidtberger as a defensive lineman and linebacker Palmer Hutchison.
Logan Clark garnered second team honors as a specialty player. Also named to the second team on the defensive side of the ball was Logan Schulte on the defensive line and Keaton Markley as a defensive back.
Garden City’s Brian Hill was named the coach of the year after his Buffaloes won the conference title with a 3-1 record. Quarterback Garret Doll of Garden City was selected as the conference’s player of the year on the offensive side of the ball. The defensive player of the year is defensive lineman Demarcus Elliot of Garden City.
Hays High finished in a three way tie for second place in the conference with Great Bend and Liberal at 2-2. Dodge City finished third at 1-3.
The Fort Hays State Tigers shot over 60% in the first quarter on their way to a 26-6 lead after the ten minutes. The Tigers pushed their lead to 30 by have time at 45-15. Fort Hays State opened the game on a 23-2 run and then used a 11-0 run over the final minute of the first quarter and first four minutes of the second quarter to put any doubt of the outcome away.
Highlights
Fort Hays State was never threatened in the second half pulling away for an 84-42 victory. Five players scored in double figures led by the career high 16 of Taylor Rohlfs. Kacey Kennett added 15 for a second consecutive game. Carly Heim scored 13, Whitney Clampitt added 12 and Emma Stroyan 10.

Fort Hays State used runs of 13-3 and 20-3 in the first half to take control of the season opening game at the MIAA-NSIC Challenge in Fayette, Iowa. The Tigers did allow the host Upper Iowa Peacocks to score for the first 6:30 building their lead to 8-0 and then took a 13-3 lead for their biggest lead of the first quarter.
Fort Hays State led 15-8 after the first quarter then exploded for a 20-3 run to open the second quarter. The run was started by seven straight points from Taylor Rolfs. At the end of the run the Tigers led 35-11 and took a 37-17 lead to half time.
Highlights
Fort Hays State continued to increase the lead through the second half pushing the lead to 50-24 after three quarters. The Tigers outscored the Peacocks 16-8 in the fourth quarter for the 66-32 win. The Tigers held Upper Iowa to single digit scoring in each of the four quarters.
Tatyana Legette and Kacey Kennett each scored 15 to lead the Tigers. 11 players in all scored during the game. Fort Hays State starts the season at 1-0. Upper Iowa falls to 0-1.
Hays High School head football coach Randall Rath resigned the position on Thursday as confirmed by athletic director Chris Michaelis. Rath was the head coach for the past three seasons going 7-20. He has also resigned his teaching position effective at the end of the current school year. The search for a new coach will begin immediately.
