Bishop Miege took a quick 5-0 lead on the Hays High Indians Saturday afternoon forcing coach Rick Keltner to take a time out. Out of the break Hays hit four of six three point attempts to build a 12-7 first quarter lead. The teams remained tight for the remainder of the quarter and were tied 15 all through eight minutes.
Ethan Nunnery scored the first two points of the second quarter for a 17-15 lead. But the second quarter proved to be a problem for the Indians for a second consecutive game. A 14-0 run by the Stags put Hays in a 29-17 deficit before Peyton Kieffer three scored the Indians second and final field goal of the quarter.
Highlights
The Indians were outscored by eleven for a second consecutive quarter, 20-9 in the third. Hays did find their shooting stroke late in the fourth quarter, but fall 76-48.
Division one bound, junior, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl scored a game high 26. Cole Murphy, Ethan Nunnery and Peyton Kieffer each scored 12. Murphy hit 13 three pointers in the tournament.

The Indians fall to 8-4 on the season, losing back to back games for the first time this year. #1 in 4A-1 Bishop Miege is now 9-1. Hays returns to action on Tuesday against Salina Central in Hays. The girls will tip off at 6:00 with the boys to follow. The Lady Indians will then head to the Mid-America Classic on Thursday, Friday and Saturday in McPherson.
The second quarter was the deciding factor in the Hays High Indians opening round win over Manhattan when they allowed just two points gaining separation by half time. The second quarter was again the deciding factor for Hays on Friday, but not in the way they would have liked.
Hays led the second ranked team in 5A, Wichita Heights, 17-16 after one quarter. The Indians buried five first quarter three pointers. Four of those came from Cole Murphy. The second quarter was all Heights. The Falcons outscored the Indians 23-6 on a 8-0 run and a 10-2 run to take a 39-23 halftime lead.
Highlights
Heights pushed the lead as high as thirty in third quarter after a 14-0 run. The Indians closed the gap to twenty-three late in third quarter and had two open looks at three pointers but could not connect. Hays closed the gap down to 20 when they opened the fourth quarter on a three pointer, but could not get any closer falling 76-51.
Cole Murphy led the Indians with 20 which included six three pointers. Peyton Kieffer grabbed his second double-double of the season with ten points and eleven rebounds. Ethan Nunnery assisted on nine made baskets.

The Hays High Indian wrestling team defeated Spring Hill in a dual on Thursday night. The Indians will host the Bob Kuhn Prairie Classic on Friday and Saturday. Action starts at 2:30 on Friday and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. Finals of the tournament can be heard on 101.9 Saturday evening.

Hays allowed just two second quarter points in building at 28-16 lead at halftime over the Manhattan Indians Thursday afternoon at the Dodge City Tournament of Champions. The two teams traded baskets over the first six minutes of the game leaving Manhattan with a 14-11 lead. Hays would score in the final seconds of the first quarter when Ethan Nunnery picked up a loose ball and flung a shot up from just in front of half court to tie the game at 14.
That shot started a 10-0 Hays run that gave the Indians in maroon a 21-14 lead. Manhattan would answer with their only two points of the second quarter to close the game to 21-16. The Indians scored seven more unanswered points to the end half including a Tradgon McCrae three pointer with time expiring for a 28-16 half time lead.
Highlights
Hays hit a three pointer to build their lead to 15 but would not score for the next four minutes allowing Manhattan to close the gap. A 10-0 run by Manhattan brought the Hays lead down to five before Peyton Kieffer and McCrae combined for five quick points to go up 36-26. Manhattan scored the next six points to get with in four at 36-32 with 2:05 left in the third quarter.
Hays though would buckle down on defense and allow just 13 points for the rest of the game. Hays pushed their lead back to nine to start the fourth quarter. Hays led by as many as 20 in the fourth quarter and never by less than nine with the final buzzer showing Hays with a 63-45 victory.

Tradgon McCrae scored a game high 17. Peyton Kieffer added 15 and Ethan Nunnery scored 13. Nunnery led the team with eight rebounds and eight assists just missing out on a second consecutive triple-double. Hays improves to 8-2 on the season while Manhattan falls to 5-4.
Hays will face the winner of the Wichita Heights and Leavenworth at 2:30 on Friday.
Garden City scored off the tip-off before Hays High held the Buffaloes scoreless for the rest of the quarter. The Indians took the lead on back to back Tasiah Nunnery three pointers. Those two shots sparked a 12-0 run through the remainder of the first quarter. Kallie Leiker opened the second quarter with a three to put the Indians up 15-2.
Garden City then started to get a hold of the offense and went on a 13-4 run that cut the Indian’s lead down to four points at 19-15. The Buffaloes had the ball down five but could not score to get any closer. The Indians scored the final three points of the first half to take a 25-17 lead at half time.
Highlights
The Indians held Garden City to just two points for a second time on the night when they outscored the Buffaloes 23-2 in the third quarter. The big quarter put Hays up by 29 enter the fourth quarter. Hays would cruise to a 54-30 win.

Hays 82 – Garden City 53
The first half belonged to Tradgon McCrae. The junior guard scored a career high during the first half on seven three pointers on the way to 23 points. Garden City led 4-0 in the first fifteen seconds of the game. Three straight threes gave the Indians a lead they would never relinquish. Hays led after the first quarter 25-20 and pushed their lead to a first half high 16 by halftime at 47-41.
Highlights
The Indians never let up in the second half outscoring Garden City in the 20-13 in the third quarter and 15-9 in the fourth. The majority of the fourth quarter had a continuous clock after Hays pushed their lead above 30.
McCrae ended the night with 36 points including nine three pointers and sinking seven of eight free throws. Ethan Nunnery added 14 points in the victory. Hays as a team hit a season high 17 three pointers.

The Indians move on to the Dodge City Tournament of Champions next Thursday where they will face state ranked Manhattan at 2:00 in the United Wireless Arena.
Hays jumped out to a 10-2 lead over the first five minutes of the ball game against Great Bend. The Indians though scored just a single free throw over the final three minutes while allowing just a field goal and a free throw for a 11-5 lead after the first quarter.
Hays scored the first five points of the second quarter to build an eleven point lead at 16-5 but then had to endure another scoring drought. This time the Indians didn’t score for just over three minutes. Great Bend took the opportunity to outscore the Indians 7-0. The Panthers at one point cut the score down to 16-10 and had six chances to score but came away with just two points. Hays finished the half on a 9-2 run for a 25-14 half time lead.
Highlights
Hays opened the second half on a 9-2 run to build their lead up to 18 at 34-16. The Indians then went on their third long spell of the game scoring just two points in the next 4:20. Great used that time to go on a 14-2 run, closing the the Indian lead down to 36-30 at the end of the third quarter.
The Indians again used a strong start to a quarter to build their lead back to double figures at 43-30 with 6:26 left in the game. The Indians though score just four points over the next 6:16. The Panthers took their first lead with 1:14 left in the game and extended that lead to two points with :26 left. Hays’ Tasiah Nunnery scored on an inbound play with ten second remaining the blocked a potential game winning shot on the other end. A half court shot from Hays missed send the game to over time tied at 49.

Hays never trailed in over time. After being tied at 51, the Indians took the lead for good at 52-51 and then pulled away to win 62-53. Great Bend committed seven overtime turnovers after having just 13 in regulation.

Hays 66 – Great Bend 60
Neither team got a good feel on offense for the first two minutes of the game playing to a three all tie. Hays then hit four three pointers to build their lead up to 15-6. The Indians settled for a 17-11 lead after the first quarter and pushed that lead to 11 following a 9-2 run. Great Bend though never let Hays get further away. The Panthers ended the second quarter on a 16-6 run and had the chance to take the lead on two technical free throws but missed both. Hays led 32-31 at half time following Great Bend making one of two free throws with one second left on the clock.
Highlights
Great Bend grabbed their first lead of the game during a 14-0 run that took them from six down at 40-34 to up 48-40 at the end of the third quarter. Great Bend scored the first two points of the fourth quarter to have their biggest lead of the game at ten, 50-40. Then Peyton Kieffer caught fire. Kieffer hit four three pointers over the first three minutes of the fourth quarter to help the Indians regain the lead at 51-50. The fourth quarter featured five lead changes and three ties. The final lead change came as Ethan Nunnery put the Indians up 61-60 on a free throw and Hays held on for the 66-60 victory.

Hays improves to 6-2 on the year and 2-0 in Western Athletic Conference. Great Bend has lost six straight games and is 1-6 on the year and fall to 0-2 in WAC games.
Hays High opened the 2018 portion of their basketball schedule by hosting Liberal on Friday night. For both the Indians and the Redskins the game also marked their first Western Athletic Conference games of the season.
Hays took two early four point leads in the first quarter but could not pull away over a three minute scoring drought. Liberal tied the score at six with two minutes left in the first quarter. The Indians hit a three late in the first quarter and then another three on the first possession of the second quarter to lead 12-6.
The Redskins brought the score back to within one at 14-13 with five and half minutes left in the second quarter. The Hays defense stiffened though and allowed just one more point the rest of the quarter. The Indians did piece together a 7-0 run to take a 21-14 lead at half time.
Highlights
Hays added to their halftime lead on their first touch of the ball of the second half. Isabel Robben scored two of her career and game high 14 points to give the Indians a 23-14 lead. Liberal then went on their best run of the game outscoring the Indians 14-4 over a four plus minute span. Liberal took their first and only lead of the game at 28-27 with 3:15 left in the third quarter. The Indians answered with a three pointer to take the lead back and then broke a 30 all tie at the third quarter buzzer to grab a 32-30 lead.
Hays pushed their lead to 39-34 when Liberal answered with a three and had to chances to tie or take the lead. Robben scored the next five points for Hays to give the Indians a 44-37 advantage. Liberal pulled back within three with just under two minutes left in the game but would not score again. The Indians hit four of their final six free throws for the 48-41 win.

Hays 74 – Liberal 56
Hays took control of the game from the very beginning scoring the first nine points of the game and pushing their early advantage to 14-2. Liberal pulled back to within single digits just one more time at 16-7 late in the first quarter. The Indians pulled away on a 13-0 run to go up 29-7 early in the second quarter. Hays never let Liberal within 13 rest of the night.
Highlights
The Indians took a 36-19 lead into the locker room at half time and pushed that lead as high as 27 in the second half. The Indians continued to lead by more than twenty until final five minutes of the game when Liberal went on a 16-5 run to get pull within 66-52. Hays took a 74-56 victory closing the game on a 8-4 run.
Kyler Koenke led the Indians with 16. Peyton Kieffer and Tradgon McCrae each scored 14. Cole Murphy hit four three pointers for 12 points. Liberal was led by Tristen Bigham led all scoring with 18.

Fort Hays State traveled to historic Mason-Halpin Field House in Kansas City Saturday to take on the Rockhurst Hawks. The Tigers started the game on a 11-3 run thanks to seven of eight free throw shooting. That eight point difference was the largest lead for Fort Hays in the first half.
Rockhurst hit a jumper at the end of the first quarter to pull within four points at 18-14. The Tigers did not score for the first three minutes of the second quarter while Rockhurst knocked down a three pointer to get within one at 18-17. Fort Hays never relinquished the first half lead. The two teams traded field goals over the final six minutes with Carly Heim knocking the the Tigers only first half three pointer to give Fort Hays at 31-26 half time lead.
Highlights
The Tigers used the end of first half three pointer and the first eight points of the second half to build a 39-26 lead. Rockhurst went on a 7-1 run that was answered by a Tiger 13-3 run. The Fort Hays run put the Tigers up 52-36 with a little under two minutes left in the third quarter.
Rockhurst would get no closer than ten through the fourth quarter at 56-46. The Tigers then went on game clinching 11-0 run to win 67-50.

Fort Hays moves to 9-2 on the year. Rockhurst falls to 6-4. Carly Heim led the Tigers with 22 points, Tatyana Legette scored 14 and Kacey Kennett added 11. The Tigers shot 77% from the free throw line making 24 of 31 attempts.
After shooting near 70% on Tuesday night, Hays struggled to find the bottom of the basket in the first quarter on Friday night against Colby. The Indians led just once in the first frame at 2-0. Colby hit three, three point field goals during an 11-2 run that build that Eagle’s lead to 11-5. The big lead for Colby came with 2:30 left in the first quarter. Hays allowed just two points the remainder of the half during a 25-2 run. The strong finish to the first half gave the Indians a 30-13 lead.
Highlights
Hays continued to hold Colby nearly scoreless during the third quarter as the Eagles tallied just two more points during the eight minutes. The Indians then held Colby to four free throws in the fourth quarter. The Indian’s run that was at 25-2 at half time grew into the fourth quarter to 39-4. Hays won by the final score of 44-19.

Hays 84 – Colby 45
Hays had little trouble with Colby on Friday night, opening the game on a 21-2 run. Hays missed their first shot and then followed that up with making their next seven shots including four three pointers. The Indians led 32-10 after the first quarter and pushed the lead up 53-27 at half time.
Highlights
The Indians led by 40 points after three quarters 77-37 after outscoring Colby 24-10. Leading by more than 30 points the clock in the fourth quarter was run continuously leaving Hays with an 84-45 victory.
Hays shot 48% from the field and knocked 12 three pointers. Four scored in double figures for Hays. Cole Murphy and Kyler Koenke each scored 14. Tradgon McCrae and Peyton Kieffer eache tallied 13.

Both state ranked Hays High basketball teams headed to Junction City on Tuesday night for their final road game before Christmas break. The Lady Indians entered the game at #9 in 4A-DI for the 3rd consecutive week. The boys became ranked for the first time this season at #10.
Girls
Hays 70 – Junction City 38
Hays High and Junction City traded baskets for the first two minutes leading to a five all tie. The Lady Indians then held the Blue Jays scoreless for six minutes during with Hays went on a 16-0 run. The 21-5 lead marked their biggest lead of the first quarter. Hays led 21-7 after one quarter and extended that lead to 41-17 by half time.
Hays 29-15 at the midway point of the second quarter. The Lady Indians then went on a 12-2 run to close out the first half, outscoring Junction City 20-10 in the second quarter. Hays hit five of seven first half three point attempts.
Highlights
Tasiah Nunnery scored in double figures for the first time in her Lady Indian career with 10 points in the first half. She continued her career night with eight more points in the third quarter. She ended the game with 18 points which included four three pointers. Hays took a 31 point lead on their first shot of the fourth quarter to start the continuous clock, sending Hays on to a 70-38 victory.

The Lady Indians are now 4-1 on the year. Junction City drops to 1-3.
Boys
Junction City 75 – Hays 71
Hays led much of the first half in Junction City leading 12-5 after the first four minutes of the game. The Blue Jays closed the gap down to two points before the Indians scored back to back field goals to end the first quarter with a 17-10 lead.
The Indians built their lead to a first half high of ten at 26-16 just over two minutes into the second quarter. Junction City responded with an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to get within two at 26-24. Hays increased their lead to six three more times in the second quarter but didn’t score over the 1:50. Junction City ended the half on a 8-0 run, hitting a three pointer at the buzzer for a 36-34 lead. It was the first lead for Junction City in the half.
Highlights
Hays took the lead back on a three pointer at 37-36. It would be the last time the Indians would lead. Junction City took the largest lead of the game at 52-41 following a 16-4 run. Hays chipped away at the lead getting within four by the end of the third quarter 57-53.
Hays trailed by as many as eight in the fourth quarter but found a way to tie with 1:15 left following a Cole Murphy three pointer. With the score tied at 70 the Indians gave up a three pointer and two free throws. Hays made just one of four three throws and missed their only two point field goal try, leaving Junction City with 75-71 victory.

Ethan Nunnery scored a game and career high 30. Cole Murphy scored 18 and Kyler Koenke added 10. Junction City put four in double figures, led by the 28 of A.J. Dickerson. Both teams shot over 50% from the field. Hays was 9 of 19 on free throws and Junction City finished 7 of 13, knocking down the game sealing two with ten seconds left.
Hays falls to 3-2 and will play Colby at home on Friday for their final game before Christmas break. Junction City is now 3-1 with all three wins coming against Western Athletic Conference opponents.
Hays High’s athletic director Chris Michaelis has turned in his resignation effective July 1, 2018. The resignation was part of the personnel transactions at Monday night’s school board meeting.
Michaelis has spent 21 years in the USD 489 school district. He spent time as a teacher, boys and girls soccer coach, and most recently athletic director and assistant principal. Prior to coming to Hays, Michaelis spent five years in education in Manhattan. He also served five years in the Army prior to his career in education.
Michaelis will finish out his duties for the current school year, which include the process of finding a new football coach.
The Hays High Indians took the road for the first time this basketball season, traveling to Pratt on Tuesday night.
Both Hays teams were coming off of 2-1 records at the Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout. The girls finishing runner up to #1 in 5A St. Thomas Aquinas. The boys finished in 4th.
Girls
Hays 61 – Pratt 46
Hays High did not allow a first quarter field goal on their way to a 13-0 lead through the first seven minutes of the game. The only points for Pratt came on a pair of free throws for a 13-2 score after one quarter. The Greenbacks hit six second quarter field goals. Five of those where three pointers and cut the Indian lead from thirteen down to five at 22-17 with two minutes remaining in the half. Hays ended the half on a 10-3 run with Hays taking a 32-20 halftime lead.
Highlights
Hays built their lead to 16 early in the third quarter followed by five straight from Pratt to make the Indian at eleven at 37-26. The Indians then went into a 12-0 lead to build their lead to 49-26 and ended the third quarter with a 51-32 advantage. Pratt cut into the lead once again, bringing the Hays lead down to 14 with half of the fourth quarter remaining. The Indians went on a quick 7-2 run to put any comeback thoughts for Pratt away and took a 61-46 win.

Hays 94 – Pratt 55
Hays High rode hot shooting through the first quarter to a 37-14 lead over Pratt after just eight minutes. The Indians made 10 of 15 three point attempts in the quarter and 12 of their 18 shots overall. Cole Murphy established a career high in points of 15 in the first quarter then added eight more in the second quarter for 23 first half points. Hays built the lead as high as 35 in the first half and took a 35-22 lead into the half.
Highlights
The Indians continued to build their lead in the third quarter outscoring Pratt 27-17. The lead for Hays was 82-39 after three quarters and a continuous clock fourth quarter left the Indians with a 94-55 win.
Cole Murphy led the way with 26 points. Tradgon McCrae scored 16 while Kyler Koenke and Nick Fisher each added 12, a career high for both.
