Chase Brous wanted to play baseball past high school when he was younger. However, the more he played football in high school he realized his future might be on the grid iron. Thursday at the high school cafeteria, Brous signed his National Letter of Intent to play for the McPherson College Bulldogs.
Brous received interest from McPherson College during his junior season but was worried if the interest was still there following a coaching change at the college. Following a series of conversations with new Bulldogs coach Jeremiah Fiscus and conversations between Fiscus and Indians’ coach Tony Crough, Brous landed a college to play at.
Chase Brous
Brous plans on majoring in elementary education while attending college. The former defensive lineman for the Indians has hitting the weight room and gaining weight at the top of his priority list before heading off for fall camp. Coach Tony Crough has already seen the difference in Brous noting that he has put on around 25 pounds since the end of football. Crough believes one of the top football qualities that helped Brous reach the collegiate level is his tenacity on the field.
Crough also pointed out that Brous was everything that a first year head coach could want in a player and a senior leader.

In a two year varsity career Brous compiled 72 total tackles, five for loss, two sacks, caused one fumble and recovered four more. He was named to the second All-Western Athletic Conference defense this past season.
Hays High opened the 5A sub-state tournament with the Kapaun Crusaders on Wednesday night. The Indians earned the seventh seed in the west half of the bracket while Kapaun came in as the ten seed.
It took Hays High six and a half minutes to score their first field goal of the game. However thanks to strong free throw shooting after driving to the basket the Indians led Kapaun 8-5. The only lead the Crusaders held in the first half lasted thirteen seconds. Trailing 5-4 Brooke Denning and Savannah Schneider each sank a pair of free throws to grab the lead back for the Indians. Tasiah Nunnery then added the first field goal of the game for Hays to finish off a 6-0 spurt.
Hays led 12-7 after one quarter and had their advantage trimmed down to 13-11 following back to back field goals by Kapaun. Less than one minute later Denning hit the Indians’ first three pointer which ignited a 13-0 run. Five different players contributed points during the run which lifted the Hays to a 26-11 lead with just over two minutes left in the first half. The team traded two points each to end the second quarter and Hays led 28-13 at halftime.
Highlights
The Indians lead would never drop below double figures during the second half. Hays led by as many as twenty in the third quarter 41-21 and 45-27 going to the fourth quarter. Hays led 48-30 with 4:45 remaining in the game when Kapaun went to fouling the Indians. Hays made just three of their next eight free throws allowing the Crusaders to get within fourteen points. The Crusaders were able to get the lead down to a ten point Hays lead with 1:11 remaining. Tasiah Nunnery and Re Green sank four straight free throws to seal the game 63-48.

Ten players scored in total for Hays led by the 13 from Savahann Schneider making 11 of 12 free throws. Tasiah Nunnery made 7 of 10 free throws and scored 11. The Indians made 31 of 47 free throws and 13 of 24 in the fourth quarter. Hays improves to 14-7 on the year and will play Goddard on Friday for the berth to the 5A state tourney. Goddard defeated Salina South 50-25. Kapaun ends their season at 10-11.
Hays High wrestlers went 4-2 in the opening round of state on Friday at Harman Arena. All six wrestlers will still be competing on day number two of the 5A tournament.
160: Kreighton Myers: Won by decision 4-2 then lost in the semi-finals 4-2 in overtime.
170: Chase Voth: Lost by Fall then won by Fall (1:40).
182: Gavin Meyers: Won by Fall (1:25) in the first round and also semifinals with a 1:02 pin. He then lost in the semifinals 4-3.
195: Cole Schroeder: Lost by Fall then won by Fall (2:36).
220: Gavin Nutting: Won by Fall (0:30) then lost by major decision 17-2.
285: Logan Schulte: Won by Fall (4:43) then lost by Fall.

The Hays High Indians finished the regular season off with Abilene on Friday night on Senior Night. It was the second meeting of the season between the two teams with the Cowgirls and Cowboys each picking up wins in the first contest. Like the games on Thursday night, Friday’s results did not have an impact on the sub-state standings.

#4-4A Abilene 52 – Hays 40
Hays and Abilene traded the lead three times in the first quarter with neither team building a two possession lead. Abilene led 11-10 heading into the second quarter before the Indians tied the game for a third time at 14. Hays however never could take the lead in the second quarter. Trailing 20-18 the Indians went scoreless on back to back possession. Abilene built the lead to five in with a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the first half to lead 24-19.
Highlights
Abilene led the second half and pushed their advantage as high as 13 in the third quarter. The Indians closed the gap back to nine in entering the fourth quarter but trailed again by ten with six minutes remaining. Hays once again chipped away at the lead and trailed 44-40 with 2:38 left. Abilene left the door open for Hays with a turnover, missed shot and two missed free throws, but Hays couldn’t walk through. The Indians missed two shots and turned it over twice during the next ninety seconds. Abilene made all eight of their free throws in the final 1:08 to win 52-40.

Jaycee Dale led the Indians with 14 and Brooke Denning scored 10. Hays finishes the regular season at 13-7 while Abilene improves to 18-2. The Indians will play at home next Wednesday against Kapaun to open postseason play.

#6-4A Abilene 51 – Hays 43
The score was more like a baseball game through the first six minutes of the contest. Trailing 6-5 Hays finally found some rhythm on offense. Hays scored the final six points of the quarter to lead 11-6. Abilene led 15-14 before Trey Adams dumped to field goals and TJ Nunnery drained a right corner three for a 21-15 lead. The Indians thought did score for the final 2:15 of the half and Abilene answered with eight straight points for a 23-21 lead at the halftime.
Highlights
Hays led just once in the second half. The Indians trailed by four when Nunnery hit another basket and Braiden Meyers nailed a left corner three off a behind the back pass from Tradgon McCrae. The three pointer gave the Indians what proved to be their last lead of the game at 26-25. Abilene quickly took the lead back and started on a 7-0 run. The Cowboys led by seven entering the fourth quarter and by nine early in the fourth quarter. Hays could only close the gap back down to six with 1:40 remaining and then again with :46 left. Abilene made seven of their nine fourth quarter free throws to win 51-43.

TJ Nunnery scored a game high 15 to the lead the Indians who have dropped four straight and finish the regular season 9-11. Abilene ends the season at 17-3. Hays will be on the road Thursday to play Salina Central to open post season play.
Hays High visited Dodge City on Thursday night. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was rescheduled due to winter weather. Both this game in Dodge City and Friday Night’s game versus Abilene counted towards sub-state tournament records.
The Hays girls will host Kapaun next Wednesday to open up postseason while the boys will be on the road to Salina Central next Thursday.
Both teams will finish the regular season with senior night against Abilene tomorrow night.
Girls
Hays 56 – Dodge City 49
A 7-0 run during first quarter put Dodge City in front 9-4 as the Indians made just two of their first ten shots. Hays trailed much of the first half and nearly the entire second quarter. However, the Indians stayed in the game despite shooting just 29% in the first half. Hays tied the game four different times before taking the lead on an Isabel Robben layup with five seconds left in the second quarter. The basket gave the Indians a 26-24 lead at halftime.
Highlights
Hays trailed just once in the second half. Leading by five in the early stages of the third quarter Hays saw Dodge City go on a 8-2 run to regain the lead at 32-31. Hays though answered right back on a 7-0 run to grab the lead for good in the third quarter. Though the Indians did not trail again, doesn’t mean things were easy. Hays led by six early in the fourth quarter before the Red Demons scored six straight points to tie the game at 41 with 5:15 left in the game. Hays scored the next ten points of the game with the help of full court pressure that forced four straight turnovers. The ten point lead and free throw shooting provided enough cushion to win 56-49.

Dodge City 41 – Hays 37
Hays never trailed in the first half against Dodge City. Following game opening three pointers from each team, the Indians went on a 9-0 run to build their largest first half lead of 12-3. The Indians scored just eight points in the remaining ten minutes of the half. The Hays defense though kept Dodge City from doing much on their end of the offense. A 14-5 run tied the game for the Red Demons but it took 6:20 to do so. Hays outscored Dodge City 3-2 in the final ninety seconds of the half for a 20-19 halftime lead.
Highlights
Dodge City took their first lead of the second half after scoring first in the third quarter. Trailing 21-20 and 23-22 the Indians established a lead once again and lead 29-28 heading to the fourth quarter. Hays opened the fourth quarter with a Braiden Meyers three pointer and a three point play from Tradgon McCrae to build a seven point lead at 35-28.
The Indians would only score one more basket the rest of the game. The field goal with 4:10 left lifted Hays to a 37-33 advantage. Dodge City didn’t have much offense to close out the game but it was just enough. The Red Demons took the lead at 39-37 on their third three pointer of the quarter and seventh of the game. Hays still stood a chance in the final minute as Dodge City made just two of four free throws but the Indians couldn’t get a shot to go through the rim losing 41-37.

Hays falls to 9-10 and finishes 4-4 in the WAC. Dodge City finishes the year at 11-9 and 4-4. Tradgon McCrae led the team with 16 points. The Indians will be at home on Friday for Senior Night against Abilene.
Eleven of the twelve wrestlers that Hays High took to the 5A Regional Tournament in Arkansas City moved on to day two. Kreighton Meyers, Chase Voth, Gavin Meyers, Cole Schroeder, Gavin Nutting and Logan Schulte all won their first round matches. Kreighton Meyers, Gavin Meyers, and Nutting then won their next match to reach the semifinals.
Each of the three wrestlers though suffered their first loss of the tournament in that round.
Six wrestlers lost first round matches but five of them kept their chance of a state appearance alive with victories. Grant Karlin, Creighton Newell, Hazen Keener, Kyler Casper, and Landon Summer each won consolation bracket matches.
The team continues action in Arkansas City on Saturday. The 5A state tournament is held in Park City at Hartman Arena next Friday and Saturday.
It was a flashback Friday in Garden City for Hays High as they played their Western Athletic Conference games with the Buffaloes in “The Garden” at the old high school. The games had been moved from Garden City High School to Horace Good Middle School because of the Garden City hosting a KSHSAA 6A Regional Wrestling Tournament.

#10-5A Hays 46 – Garden City 35
Garden City led the entire first quarter as they scored the first three points of the game. Tied at nine a piece in Hays could not take the lead on two possessions and trailed after one quarter 14-11. The Indians trailed 16-15 and misfired on the next seven possessions, but the defensive effort remained constant for Hays as they trailed just 18-15 with 2:00 to go in half. Hays scored the final seven points of the quarter to take a 22-18 lead by halftime on their first lead of the game.
Highlights
Both teams struggled to score starting the third quarter. Tied at 22 points a piece, Hays finished the third quarter on a 9-2 run capped by a Brooke Denning three pointer for a 31-24 lead heading to the fourth quarter. The Indians’ lead never dropped below two possessions in the fourth quarter. The Hays defense kept Garden City from scoring back to back field goals the entire quarter on their way to a 46-35 victory.
Hays grabbed a season high 46 rebounds as Garden City made their first three pointer then missed the next 20 attempts.

Garden City 55 – Hays 49
Garden City was trying to claim the WAC crown against Hays on Friday night with a victory securing the outright title. Hays won the 2018 crown as Garden City finished second. Garden City entered the Friday night contest with a one game lead of the Indians.
Garden City made their first six three pointers and eight of ten first quarter shots to lead 22-13. Hays trailed by as many as 12 in the first quarter before Tradgon McCrae hit a three pointer to end the first quarter. That shot was the start to a 9-0 run that brought the Indians back within three at 22-19. Garden City didn’t score for the first 3:20 of the second quarter but once they did, the Buffaloes went on a 12-3 run to reclaim a 12 point lead. The Indians scored the final five points of the half with Jason Krannwitter hitting a right corner three closing the halftime deficit down to 34-27.
Highlights
Hays scored just one field goal and four free throws in the third quarter as Garden City grabbed a pair of 13 point leads and led 46-33 entering the fourth. The Indians cut the Garden City advantage down to six midway through the fourth quarter after holding the Buffaloes scoreless for over three minutes. Garden City went back up by ten with 2:05 left, but left the door open for Hays scoring just a single point for the remainder of the game. The Indians had made five consecutive field goals but had the next five shots hit the rim but refused to go in. A three pointer from thirty plus feet at the buzzer by McCrae brought the final score to 55-49 in favor of Garden City.

The Hays High Indians traveled to play a pair of state ranked Abilene teams on Tuesday. It was the first of two meetings between the two schools as they will meet again on February 22nd in Hays.

#5-4A Abilene 62 – #10-5A Hays 48
Abilene led the entire first quarter after Hays missed their first three shot attempts. Down 10-4, Tasiah Nunnery scored five straight points to get the Indians within a point at 10-9 with 3:35 left in the quarter. Hays would not score for the next 7:15. During the drought Abilene scored 11 points and went up 21-9. Hays scored seven straight points and had the ball down 21-16 but turned if over and did not score for the final two minutes of the half. Abilene added two free throws for a 23-16 half time lead after going scoreless for just over four minutes.
Highlights
Trailing by 11 early in the fourth quarter, Hays played their best basketball over the next 63 seconds. A 12-0 run gave Hays their first lead of the game at 28-27 with 4:47 left in the third quarter. The lead lasted just eight seconds. Abilene made a pair of free throws at 4:39 mark to take the lead back and start a 9-0 run. Abilene never trailed again. The Indians started the fourth quarter down four and had the ball three times but did not score. Abilene shot 28 fourth quarter free throws making 17 of them to win 62-48. Overall the Cowgirls made 28 of 46. Hays made 11 of 16.

#6-4A Abilene 53 – Hays 49
Hays opened the game making their first three shots and their first two free throws to take a 9-1 lead. Abilene bounced back with a 10-3 run of their own, to be answered by an Indian 11-3 spurt and then a Cowboy 10-2 run. Everything done through two quarters left Hays with a 35-32 advantage with both teams shooting 50% or higher.
Highlights
Hays pushed their third quarter advantage to a game high nine points at 44-35 with 2:05 left and led 46-39 after the third. Abilene had one more run in them and it lasted the entire fourth quarter. The Cowboys outscore Hays 14-3 in the fourth to win 53-49. Hays held their lead until Abilene edged ahead for the first time with 3:38 left in the game.

#2-6A Liberal 55 – #10-5A Hays 34
The girls game featured a pair of state ranked teams. Liberal entered undefeated at 14-0 and ranked #2 in 6A. Hays spent a second week at #10 in 5A and 11-4 overall. The game also was a key match-up in the Western Athletic Conference with Liberal leading the conference at 3-0 and Hays at 4-1.
Hays had their first five shots blocked and made only one of eleven first quarter shots as Liberal made seven of ten field goals running out to a 17-2 lead after the first quarter. Hays pulled the deficit down to 13 midway through the second quarter but missed three shots on their next two possessions. Liberal pushed the lead up to 28-10 by halftime.
Highlights
The Indians held Liberal scoreless for the first two minutes of the second half but could only muster two points. Liberal never led by less than 16 in the second half and won 55-34.

Hays 59 – Liberal 54
Hays made four consecutive three pointers in the first quarter to jump out to a 13-5 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Liberal made just two first quarter field goals as the Indians led 17-5 after the first eight minutes. Hays pushed their lead up to 16 midway through the second quarter at 23-7 but scored just two points for the remainder of the half. Liberal hit a pair of three pointers during that stretch as Hays led 25-13 at halftime.
Highlights
Liberal opened the second half by scoring eight straight points which were part of a 14-2 run and closed the Indian lead down to 25-21. It took Hays over three minutes to score in the third quarter but went back up by nine after scoring their first two baskets of the the quarter. Liberal again cut the lead down to five but Hays answered with the final four points of the third to lead 34-25.
The fourth quarter featured 38 free throws between the two teams. Hays made 21 of 27 attempts while Liberal knocked down 7 of 11 attempts. Liberal countered the Indians free throws with 6 of 13 three pointers in the fourth quarter. Hays lead was never under six points in the final quarter as they win 59-54.

#10 Hays 60 – Great Bend 29
Jaycee Dale hit a three from the right corner on the first possession to set an early tone in the game for the Indians. Hays scored the first six points of the game, pushed their lead to ten after the first quarter and lead by 21 at halftime 38-17. The most three pointers Hays had hit in a single game this season was seven. The Indians made six in the first half alone against the Panthers. Dale and Savannah Schneider were both to double figures by halftime with Dale at 13 and Schneider scoring 12.
Highlights
Hays held Great Bend to just 12 second half points as the Indians roll to a 60-29 victory. Savannah Schneider scored a game high 16, Jaycee Dale adds 13 and Brooke Denning put in 11.

Hays improves to 11-4 on the year and 4-1 in the WAC. Great Bend falls to 1-15 and 0-5. The Indians will host the #2 team in 6A and conference leading Liberal on Friday.

Hays 47 – Great Bend 39
Each team used a first half run to take their big leads of the first two quarters. An 8-0 Great Bend run in the first quarter gave the Panthers a 8-3 advantage. The Indians trailed by six in the first then cut the lead down to 13-11 as Cade Swayne hit a buzzer beating put back. Those two points were combined with nine more to start the second quarter and that 11-0 run gave Hays a 20-13 edge. Neither team did much scoring for final five minutes of the second quarter and Hays led 22-17 at halftime.
Highlights
Hays never trailed in the second half but the final margin didn’t come easily. Great Bend cut the Hays advantage down to two points twice in the third quarter. Both times the Indians answered with a three pointer once from Braiden Meyers and the second time from TJ Nunnery. The Panthers chopped down a double digit lead for the Indians twice to get within six points but Hays made each of their final four free throws to win 47-39.

Hays played their third game of the week as they opened with games on each of the first two days of February. The Indians hosted Garden City in a game that was snowed out back in January.

#10 Hays – Garden City
Garden City jumped out to the first lead of the game scoring four points on a pair of Hays High turnovers. Hays scored the next six points and pushed their lead as high as five in the first quarter after a 6-1 run at 12-7. Hays entered the second quarter leading by five and kept their lead at 22-20 into halftime.
Highlights
The Indians dominated most of the third quarter to expand their lead up to ten twice at 32-22 and 34-24. Part of that third quarter was a 10-2 run over the five minute stretch. Garden City hit what seemed to be a harmless three pointer late in the third quarter but that basket began a 13-0 run with 10 of those points coming in the fourth quarter. The run put Garden City on top 37-34. After the Indians took a 34-24 lead in the third quarter Hays didn’t score for the next 9:30 and did have a field goal for 10:08. But the field goal would be huge. Mattie Hutchison buried a three pointer to tie the game at 38 with :12 left. Garden City turned it over on the next possession setting up a game winning opportunity for Brooke Denning who buried a three pointer as time expired. The basket sent Hays to a 41-38 victory. Garden City missed four of five free throws in the final ninety seconds to leave the door open for the Indians.

Garden City 50 – Hays 39
Garden City used an 11-0 run to blow open a tight first quarter against Hays. Down 19-7 early in the second quarter Hays went on a 8-0 to get within four at 19-15. The Indians had the ball two more times at the score but did come away with any points. Garden City increased the lead to nine once again with a 6-1 spurt before Hays closed the gap down to five at 25-20. A Garden City inbound basket put the Buffaloes up at half time 27-20.
Highlights
Hays opened the second half on an 8-0 run to take a 28-27 lead with 3:50 left in the third quarter. Garden City didn’t score for almost five minutes in the third quarter but when they did Buffaloes took the lead back at 29-28. The basket was the first of six straight points and a 33-28 lead for Garden City. After trailing 35-30 early in the fourth quarter, Hays closed within three at 35-32 and had the basketball but turned it over.
Garden City scored on back to back possessions to put Hays down 39-32 and Hays was never within one possession for the rest of the game. Garden City made seven of their final eight free throw attempts in the final minute of the game to secure a 50-39 victory.

Hays High opened a four game home stand on Friday against Dodge City. Through the next eight days, Hays will play all of the home Western Athletic Conference games on their schedule. The original schedule was altered following a snow out in January versus Garden City.

#10 Hays 41 – Dodge City 37
Neither team grasped a firm hold on the offensive game plan in the first half of play. The two teams tied three different times over the first six minutes of the game for an 8-8 score. Dodge City ran off seven straight points into the second quarter to lead 15-8. Hays went without a field goal for 9:10 and without a point for 7:00 during that stretch. Hays found a little traction in final minute scoring a pair of field goals and closing the gap down to 15-14 at halftime.
Highlights
Things didn’t get much better in the third quarter for either team. Dodge City pushed held their advantage around five points for most of the quarter and led 28-23 heading to the fourth. Down 32-26 three minutes into the fourth quarter the Hays offense finally came to life. Hays made just 7 of their first 38 shots before making four in a row and five of their final six. The first of the field goals brought the Indians within a point and the second gave Hays their first lead at 33-32 with 3:25 left. Those baskets were part of a 12-0 Hays run that gave the Indians a 38-32 lead. Dodge City pulled back within three with 23 second remaining but the Indians make three of their final four free throws for a 41-37 win.

Hays 75 – Dodge City 63
An 11-0 run in the first quarter helped Hays build a seven point lead, 17-10. The Indians led 19-15 going into the second quarter but the momentum was on the side of Dodge City who was in the midst of a 12-3 run. That push allowed Dodge City to take a 22-20 lead with 5:20 left in the first half. Fifteen short second later Hays answered back with a three pointer to regain the lead only to lose it at 29-28 with 2:50 left in the half. The Indians held the Red Demons scoreless for the rest of the second quarter and entered the halftime locker room leading 37-29 following a 9-0 run.
Highlights
Hays pushed their advantage up to 12 with the first four points of the second half. Dodge City brought the game back within reach thanks to a 10-2 run and then a 8-2 run to close the third quarter with the Indians leading 54-52. TJ Nunnery hit a three pointer to open the fourth quarter and give the Indians some breathing room. The Red Demons were never closer that three points rest of the way, but didn’t make things easy. After a 9-2 run helped the Indians to a nine point lead with 5:30 left. TJ Nunnery tied his career high with 16 and was matched by 16 from Tradgon McCrae. Trey Adams and Braiden Meyers each scored 10 in the victory. The Indians improve to 7-6 on the year and 2-1 in conference play. Dodge City falls to 7-7 and 1-2.
The Indians will host Garden City on Saturday in a makeup game from January. The junior varsity games will start at 3:00 with the varsity girls at 5:00.
Every high school athlete with collegiate aspirations wants the opportunity to not only play but also win. Hays High senior Jaysa Wichers has that opportunity after signing a National Letter of Intent with Coffeyville Community College to play volleyball.

Wichers knew the moment she met the Red Ravens head coach the program would be a fit for her. Coffeyville has won the last two volleyball national championships and wrapped up the 2018 season at 40-3.
Hays coach Christin Nunnery calls Wichers a coach’s dream. Nunnery not only is impressed by the senior’s work ethic but also her willingness to cheer on the successes of all her teammates.

Wichers and the Hays High Indians went 20-10 this past high school season. She also had the opportunity to play in the Northwest Kansas All-Star Match following her senior season.
