Salina South 54 – #10 Hays 49 OT

The first quarter featured four ties and five lead changes between Hays and South on Tuesday night.  The tight first quarter saw both teams make four of their first five shot attempts.  Hays took a 16-14 lead to the second quarter but that too would be short lived.  South opened the quarter on a 11-2 run to take a 25-18 lead.  The Indians scored just two points in the first 6:10 of the second quarter but rallied to score seven points in a row to tie the game at 25-25 at halftime.

Highlights

 

The Indians run continued into the third quarter totaling 13-0 and a 31-25 lead with 4:45 left in the quarter.  The six point lead would prove to be the biggest lead for Hays.  South answered back with four straight points and closed gap down to 36-33 after three quarter.  Hays took a 42-39 lead before South hit just their second three pointer of the game to tie things back up.  The Indians again took the lead at 44-42 with 2:10 left in regulation.  The Cougars tied the game with :45 left giving Hays a chance to win.  The Indians missed three shots and turned the ball over once in the final seconds to send the game to overtime.

The lead swapped hands again in overtime. Hays led just once at 46-45 and South took the lead for good with 2:38 left at 47-46.  South made 6 of 9 overtime free throws to hold off Hays 54-49.  The Indians trailed by seven at 53-46 and made a three to get within four then forced a turnover but missed the ensuing field goal attempt.

Hays turned the ball over 23 times and made just one of seven free throw attempts.  Jaycee Dale scored 12, Savannah Schneider added 11 and Brooke Denning put in 10 off the bench.  Hays falls to 8-4 while South improves 4-8.

Boys

Salina South 64 – Hays 62 OT

Like the girls’ game before it, the boys’ game ended with a 16-14 score favoring Hays over the Cougars.  The teams were tied three times and traded the lead three times before settling the first eight minutes.  Hays never relinquished the lead in the second quarter building a 25-21 lead by halftime.  Hays led by as many as six in the quarter but could never pull away.

Highlights

 

South used an 8-0 run to take a 31-28 lead over the first three minutes of the third quarter.  Hays responded with their best stretch of basketball over the next eight plus minutes.  The Indians went on a 18-0 run to build a 46-31 lead with 5:07 left in the game.  Hays held South without a point for 8:23 and without a field goal for 9:02.  Once the Cougars broke the drought they were hot.  A 19-1 run over 4:30 pushed South back to a 50-47 edge.  Hays managed to tie the game with eighteen seconds left and avoided a pair of shots from the Cougars sending the game to overtime.

Each team hit a three pointer to open up the extra game time and tie at 55.  South grabbed the lead for good at 57-55 and expanded their advantage to seven points at 64-57.  South made just one of nine free throws in the overtime to leave the door open but the Indians made just four of twelve field goals and fall 64-62.

Tradgon McCrae scored 35, one point shy of his career high as the Indians fall to 6-6.  Salina South is now 6-7.

The Indians return home on Friday and Saturday to take on Dodge City and Garden City.

Girls

Hays 73 – Salina Central 65 

Strong runs to open the game and close out the first half propelled Central to a 39-26 lead at the break.  The Mustangs started on a 7-1 run over the first minute of the game.  They ended the second quarter on a 15-4 run over a 5:30 minute span.  Just before the end of first half run, Hays had closed the game down to a two point deficit at 24-22.  Hays trailed Central 39-26 at halftime.

Highlights

 

Like a switch was flipped at halftime, Hays opened up the second half on a 20-2 run to take the first lead of the game.  The Indians scored the first seven points of that run in the the first minute of the second half.  Salina Central called time out and scored a basket only to see Hays run off 13 more points and take their first lead of the game at 46-41.  Hays led 48-45 heading into the fourth quarter.

Central tied the game at 48 and took a lead at 51-50.  It would be their final lead of the game.  Tied at 53 the Indians scored the games next seven points to lead 60-53.  Central answered back with six in a row to get within only to have Hays score six in a row themselves.  The Indians led 66-62 before getting a Savannah Schneider field goal to go up by six and the Indians made five of their final six free throws to win 73-65.

Savannah Schneider scored a career high 26.  Jaycee Dale has now scored in double figures in five straight contests after scoring 15.  Brook Denning scored then, all in the second half.

Hays improves to 8-3 and has won five in a row and seven of eight games.  Salina Central falls to 7-5.

Boys

#7-5A Salina Central 52 – Hays 39

The boys game was tied early at five points a piece.  Hays fell 5-0 and then answered with a three from Braiden Meyers and a field goal by field goal by TJ Nunnery.  Central then ended the first quarter on a 14-3 run to lead 19-8.  Hays cut a 13 point lead down to seven on back to back threes from Meyers at 23-16.  The Indians had the ball down seven but could not score.  Central ended the second quarter on a 9-2 spurt and led 32-18 at halftime.

Highlights

 

Hays scored the first five points of the third quarter getting back within nine but Central answered with eight points of their own to take their largest lead of the game at 40-23.  Over the next 5:00 minutes Hays had the best stretch of basketball leading into the first basket of the fourth quarter.  A 12-2 run cut the 17 point deficit down to seven with 7:20 left in the game.  Central scored a three pointer on the ensuing possession to lead again by 10.  The Indians went scoreless on their next eight possession down by 10 and did not score for the next 3:30.  Central closed the game outscoring Hays 52-39.

Hays falls to 6-5 as Braiden Meyers ties his career high with 12.  Tradgon McCrae added 11 in the loss.  #7-5A Central improves to 10-2 on the year.

A dominate defense in the first half against Colby in the championship game of the Orange & Black Classic propelled Hays to a 24-4 halftime lead.  The game was tied at two apiece two minutes in when Hays scored the next five points to end the first quarter 7-2.  Colby cut a seven point Hays lead down to five at 9-4 at the 6:00 mark of the second quarter, but the Eagles wouldn’t score for the remainder of the quarter.

Hays went on a 15-0 run over the next six minutes which included four three pointers by four different players.  The Indians shot right on their season average of 37% in the first half while Colby made just 2 of 20 shots in the first half and none of their nine three point makes.

Highlights

 

Hays was never threatened in the second half leading by at least 18 the entire second half.  During the fourth quarter the Indians pushed the lead up to 30 on their way to a 50-19 victory.

Jaycee Dale led the Indians with 12 points.  Tasiah Nunnery recorded her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.  Nunnery was also given the Off The Bench Award for the tournament.

Coach Alex Hutchins was awarded the Tom Bowen Coach’s Award.  Kallie Leiker was named to the All-Academic team.  Savannah Schneider and Brooke Denning each made the All-Tournament team.

Hays improves to 7-3 and will host Salina Central on Friday.  Colby falls to 8-4.  The 19 points allowed by Hays was a tournament championship record.

Hays High started the game on a 12-0 run and never trailed Heritage Christian Saturday afternoon finishing in fourth place at the Orange & Black Classic in Colby.  The Indians led by 12 on five different occasions in the first quarter including a 27-15 lead at the end of the first frame.

The Indians lead swelled to 36-20 on a Cade Swayne three point play early in the second quarter before the Crusaders pulled the game back to single digits on a 7-0 run.  Hays held the lead at 14 points for the next two minutes and settled for a 11 point lead at halftime 43-32.

Highlights

 

Christian Heritage, from Del City, Oklahoma, opened the second half scoring six straight points and pulled within five at 43-38.  The Indians missed a three on the following possession but Dalyn Schwarz stuck an offensive rebound back in which ignited a 9-0 run that included another Schwarz basket and then back to back TJ Nunnery scores for a 52-38 advantage.  Following four points from the Crusaders, The Indians scored ten straight points all from players off the bench to grab their first 20 point lead at 62-42.

The Indians would never be threatened rest of the way winning 83-53.  Hays shot a season high 52% form the field and season high 44% from three making a season high 12 three pointers.  The hot shooting continued at the free throw line as Hays made 19 of 21 attempts.

Hays improves to 6-4 on the season.  TJ Nunnery scored a career high 16.  Tradgon McCrae matched the 16 points in the scoring column.  Carson Kiefer scored his first every double figure varsity game at 10 points.  Overall seven players scored eight or more points in the game.  Christian Heritage record falls to 10-8.

The Indians return home on Friday to play Salina Central.

Girls

Hays 68 – Scott City 50

Hays forced Scott City into 20 first half turnovers while committing just six themselves on the way to a 40-22 halftime lead.  Scott City shot 47% in the first half but the turnovers limited the Beavers to just 19 shot attempts.  The Indians made just 31% of their shots but made 15 of 16 free throws as they pushed their first half lead as high as 20 at 40-20 late in the second quarter.

Scott City did not score for the first 5:30 but took leads of 9-8 and 13-11 before Hays seized momentum with a 12-2 run that lasted to the second quarter.  The Indians added a 14-2 run before halftime.

Highlights

 

Hays never led by less than 12 in the second half.  Scott City pulled within 13 early in the third before Brooklyn Schaffer knocked down a three pointer to restore order.  Leading by 20 entering the fourth quarter the Indians saw the lead dwindle to 12 with 3:20 remaining but Scott City did not score for rest of the game.  Hays scored the games final six points to win 68-50 over last year’s tournament winner.

Savannah Schneider scored a career high 25 in the victory. Jaycee Dale and Mattie Hutchison each added 10.  Hays improves to 6-3 on the season and have won five of their last six games.  Scott City falls to 6-4.  The Indians will play either Highland Park or Colby for the Colby Orange & Black championship at 6:00 on Saturday in the Community Building.

Boys

Hays 79 – Goodland 50

Hays used a 15-0 first quarter run to establish control in their consolation bracket game against Goodland on Friday.  Goodland took an early lead before the Indians held the Cowboys scoreless for 5:30 minutes during the 15 point spurt.  Hays took a 38-21 lead to halftime after outscoring Goodland 20-13 in the second quarter.

Highlights

 

Neither team made much of a push through the first half of the third quarter as Hays continued to lead by double figures 44-29.  The Indians pushed their lead above 20 for the first time with a 10-2 run before a three pointer from Goodland brought the score back to 54-35 at the end of the third quarter.  Hays went on to win 79-50.

Tradgon McCrae led the way with 15.  TJ Nunnery and Tucker Johnson each added 11.  The Indians are now 5-4 overall and will play either Christian Heritage from Del City, Oklahoma or Green Valley Ranch out of Denver, Colorado at 2:00 Saturday at Colby High School.

Hays High wrestling fell to #4-6A Dodge City at home on Thursday night 39-21.

Girls

Hays 64 – Great Bend 41

Hays was never really threatened in their second conference game of the season.  Hays jumped out to a 8-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game on a pair of field goals and four free throws.  Great Bend closed within four at 10-6 over a three minute stretch.  The Indians scored eight points in the final 1:15 of the first quarter and used that as fuel for a much bigger 26-6 run that put that Hays lead at 36-12.  The Indians took a 38-14 lead into halftime.

Highlights

 

Neither team made a big push on the scoreboard in the second half.  Great Bend bested the Indians in the second half 27-26.  Coach Alex Hutchins elected to play several young players including over the final ten minutes of the game during the 64-41 victory.

The Indians were led in scoring by Brooke Denning and Savannah Schneider who each scored 12. Jaycee Dale added 11.  Eleven of the twelve players that entered the game scored in the contest.

Great Bend 76 – Hays 67

Cold shooting plagued Hays High through the first half as they made just 10 of 31 shots and 3 of 14 three pointers.  Great Bend on the flip side made 11 of 26 field goals and 4 of 13 threes for a 33-26 lead at halftime.

Hays led early at 3-0 before the Panthers went up 7-3.  The game was tied at seven and nine points a piece before Jason Krannawitter nailed a three pointer with the quarter clock expiring that brought Hays within two at 16-14.

Great Bend scored the first nine points of the second quarter to grab an eleven point lead and they led by at least five for the remainder of the half.

Highlights

 

The Panthers started each of the four quarters on a run.  The third started with a 10-2 edge and the fourth 6-0.  The six straight points to open the put Hays down 17 points at 58-41 with 6:50 left in the game.  That is when Hays got on their first extended run of the game.  Hays went on a 14-4 run with 11 of the 14 points coming from Tradgon McCrae.  The Indians cut the lead down to seven at the point with 4:15 remaining and narrowed the deficit down to four at 69-65 then 71-67 with 1:38 left.  Hays though went scoreless for the remainder of the game while Great Bend made five of their final eight free throws for a 76-67 victory.

Great Bend scored 33 points above their season average and shot eight percentage high than their average.  Hays shot eight points lower than their average in the loss.

Tradgon McCrae scored 18 fourth quarter points and 26 in the game.  He has scored 20 or more points in four consecutive games.

Hays falls to 4-3 on the year and 1-1 in the WAC.  Great Bend improves to 2-7 and 1-1 in conference play.  The Indians are back at home on Friday to take on Garden City.

Girls

#5-6A Liberal 61 – Hays 42

Hays held Liberal scoreless for the first 4:30 minutes of the game but could only build a 4-0 advantage.  The Redskins first scored at the 3:25 mark of the first quarter and sparked a 9-0 run.  The Indians cut the deficit down to two at 9-7 early in the second quarter and had the ball twice with a chance to tie or take the lead.  Liberal held off Hays on those two possessions and another Indian threat at 12-10.  The Redskins closed the second quarter on a 12-3 run to build their largest lead of the half at 24-13.

Highlights

 

Liberal powered out to a 16 point lead early in the third quarter before the Indians’ best run of the night at 11-4 closed the game down to nine 36-27.  Hays trailed one more time by nine at 38-29 but would pull no closer the rest of the night losing 61-42.

Liberal made 17 of 19 free throw attempts and 8 of 21 three pointers while moving to 7-0 on the year and opening Western Athletic Conference play at 1-0.  Hays falls to 3-3 and 0-1 in league play.

Hays 68 – Liberal 56

Liberal made four of their first six shots in the game as Hays missed each of their first six shots and the Redskins jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first four minutes.  Hays finally broke the ice and made four consecutive shots to close the game down to 13-8 after one quarter.

Liberal led by nine with four minutes to go in the second quarter when the Indians started to play their best basketball of the game.  Over the next 5:40 that led into the third quarter Hays went on a 24-3 run to grab a 36-24 advantage.  The Indians pushed their advantage to 15 midway through the third and led 47-35 to the fourth quarter.

Highlights

 

Liberal continued to shoot well behind the arc and pulled within eight at 55-47.  The Redskins had the ball and launched a right wing three that was tipped by Dalyn Schwarz, rebounded by Cade Swayne who passed out to Tradgon McCrae, who found Schwarz for a layup and foul for a three point play.  The play sparked a game decisive 12-0 run as Hays won 68-56.

Hays was led by Tradgon McCrae who scored 20 and hit the 20 point mark for a third straight game.  Cade Swayne had career highs with 13 points and 12 rebounds.  Dalyn Schwarz also added a career high 13 in the victory.

The defending WAC champs Hays High is now 4-2 on the year and 1-0 in the conference.  Liberal falls to 5-2 and 0-1.

Hays is on the road to Great Bend next Tuesday.

The Hays High Indian’s wrestling team dominated their dual in Liberal on Thursday winning 60-12.  The Indians opened the 2019 portion of their schedule with seven pins in the eleven victories.  Hays heads to the Topeka Seaman Invitational today.

Hays High hosted the Pratt Greenbacks in their final action of 2018 on Tuesday night with both the Indian squads looking to move above the .500 mark.

Girls

Hays 49 – Pratt 40

Hays sprinted out of the gates with nine straight points in less than three minutes for a 9-0 lead.  Pratt didn’t score for the first 5:40 when they banked in a three pointer for a 9-3 score.  Savannah Schneider answered moments later with her own three pointer, but that would be the only points Hays scored over the final 5:10 of the first quarter.  The Greenbacks rallied off six straight to end the quarter and the first two points of the second to pull within one at 12-11.

A 7-0 spurt by Hays gave the Indians their first of three eight point leads in the second quarter.  Each time Pratt was able to answer the bell and get within five by halftime at 24-19.

Highlights

Hays pushed their advantage up to 11 late in the third quarter and 12 early in the four before going on a scoreless drought.  The Indians would not score over the next 3:30.  Pratt though missed ten shots before making four free throws and a single two point shot to get within six at 42-36.  Jaycee Dale put back a miss and Mattie Hutchison buried a right corner three to put the Indians back up by eleven and finish with a 49-40 victory.  Hays shot a season high in field goal and three point percentage in the victory.

Boys

Hays 67 – Pratt 41

Neither Hays or Pratt brought their best offensive game to the gym in the first half of Tuesday’s game.  The two combined for just 15 points over the first 9:30 of the game leading to a 9-6 lead for Pratt early in the second quarter.  Then both teams scored on three straight possessions leaving before Pratt went on a 6-2 spurt for a 21-16 lead with 2:10 left before halftime.  Hays scored twice in the final 45 seconds of the half on baskets from Tradgon McCrae and Cade Swayne to tie the game at 24-24 heading into the locker rooms.

Highlights

The second half looked to be more of the same.  The two teams swapped the lead three different times through the first 3:45 of the half leaving Pratt with a 28-27 lead.  From that point the game belonged to Hays.  The Indians missed their first 21 three point attempts before Jason Krannawitter sank a left sideline shot for a 34-28 lead.  Hays did not miss a three pointer for the rest of the game.  Over the final 12:15 Hays went on a 40-13 run to pull away on a 67-41 victory.

The Indians scored 24 fourth quarter points matching their first half total.  Tradgon McCrae scored 17 points.  Nobody else finished with double figures but six more players scored between five and nine points.  The Indians improve to 3-2 on the year following a 73% shooting second half.  After missing their first 21 three pointers, Hays made each of their final five attempts.  Pratt falls to 2-5 on the season.

Hays 47 – Colby 44

Hays was on the road Tuesday night following a ten day layoff after their 1-2 start at the Hays City Shootout.

Colby ran off a 6-0 run in the first quarter to grab their biggest first half lead at 12-7.  A Savannah Schneider field goal cut the deficit down to 12-9 after one quarter.  Down by four early in the second quarter, Hays went on a 9-0 run including two Jaycee Dale field goals to regain the lead at 18-13.  The Indians pushed their advantage to six on one occasion after a 6-2 spurt.  Colby hit one of four free throws to end the half at 24-19 in favor of the Indians.

Highlights

 

Hays scored eight straight points midway through the third quarter to take their first double digit lead and eventually lead 36-22.  Colby though refused to go away answering with a 12-0 run and getting back to within two point early in the fourth quarter.  A basket from Tasiah Nunnery capped a 8-3 push that gave Hays a seven point lead with 2:40 left in the game.  Colby again went on a run with seven straight and tied the game at 1:10 on a pair of free throws.  Colby though would not score again and Hays made three of six free throws to win 47-44.

Hays was led in scoring by Savannah Schneider with 17 points.  Tasiah Nunnery added her first career double-double to the cause with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the now 2-2 Hays High Indians.  Colby falls to 3-2.

Boys

Hays 82 – Colby 69

Hays used a 16-4 first quarter run to build a double digit lead at 19-9 with two minutes left in the quarter.  Hays kept the lead at seven through the first eight minutes.  Colby cut the lead down to one two times but back to back three pointers from Carson Kieffer and Dylan Ruder put Hays back up by seven.  Colby finished the final five minutes of the half on a 17-6 run to take a 41-37 lead at halftime.

Highlights

 

Neither team led by more than four points in the third quarter with the two changing the lead four times and the third tie of the quarter sent the game to a 55-55 beginning of the fourth quarter.

Colby took the first fourth quarter lead with a basket just fifteen seconds in and then grabbed the lead back at 59-58 just fifteen seconds later.  Hays then embarked on a game deciding 17-3 run to build up a 13 point lead with 4:17 left.  Colby never got closer than nine rest of the way as Hays made five of their final six free throws to win 82-69.

Hays was led by Tradgon McCrae’s season high 22 points.  TJ Nunnery tied a career mark of 13.  Dayln Schwarz tallied career highs of 12 points and 12 rebounds for his first double-double.  Hays is now 2-2 on the year and will host Pratt next Tuesday for their final game of 2018.  Colby falls to 3-2.

The Hays High Wrestling team finished 8th out of 18 teams overall at the Colby Dual Tournament this past Friday and Saturday.  The Indians finished in a three way tie for second in their pool but after a tie breaker ended up battling for seventh through eighth with Dodge City and Oakley.  Hays beat Oakley 51-22 and lost to Dodge City 33-31 ending in 8th overall.

Gavin Meyers, 182, and Cole Schroeder, 195, each went 7-0 on the weekend.  Schroeder pinned all seven of his opponents.  Kreighton Meyers, 160, and Gavin Nutting, 220, each went 6-1.
