RAIN DELAY! Hays Eagles Wait Their Turn In New Orleans

**The tournament is under yet another rain delay in the first game!  Bottom of ninth still.  The weather is does not look good for the rest of the day.  There is talk about moving the tournament to a back up field that has turf, as this is a natural grass field.  We will keep you updated.

The tournament as experienced a 1 hour and 25 minute rain delay and is just under way in the bottom of the ninth between Arkansas and Mississippi.  More rain and thunderstorms are expected today.

The Hays Eagles are waiting their turn to play at the Mid-South Regional in New Orleans, LA.  Delgado Community College is the host of the tournament as Hays will face Columbia Post 19 from Columbia, Tennessee.

Game time is set for 1:00 but the game will start 35 minutes after the conclusion of game number one today regardless of the end time.

Update! American Legion Regional Baseball On KFIX

Hays Eagles’ American Legion baseball from New Orleans, Louisiana can be heard on 96.9 KFIX.  Hays will play the Tennessee champions at approximately 12:30 on Thursday.

Hays will be playing Post 19 from Columbia, Tennessee in the first round.  Columbia is 32-15 on the season and had to survive a second championship game against Shelbyville to win the state title.  Columbia won the title in the bottom of the 10th inning on a two out throwing error by the Shelbyville second baseman.

Eagles Are Champions!

The Hays Eagles used a six run third inning in grabbing a 9-5 victory over Pittsburg in the AAA American Legion Championship in Manhattan on Saturday.  Hays led 1-0 after the first inning when Riley Kaus scored from second on a dropped fly ball on the infield.  Pittsburg led 2-0 in the bottom of the third where the Eagles fireworks began.

Austin Unrein led off the inning with triple, Casey Sebrook walked, and Riley Kaus single bring Unrein home to tie the game at 2.  Hayden Hutchison the loaded the bases with no out on a walk.  Pittsburg changed pitchers and the first pitch from VJ Piccini was lined into the outfield for a two rbi single.  Hays again loaded the bases and Unrein at bat for the second time in the inning hit a two out two run single.  Hays led 7-2 after three innings.

Pittsburg responded back with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth bring the score to 7-5.  Hays couldn’t score in the fourth through seventh innings.  Then in the bottom of the eighth, Jarrett Sanders beat out a throw to first base with two outs to load the bases and Zack Legleiter brought in two runs with a double giving the Eagles the final margin 9-5.

Josh Heifner(11-1) took the victory over five innings, giving up five runs on eight hits.  Layne Downing saw his first action of the tournament throwing three innings of one hit ball and Austin Unrein ended the game with a scoreless ninth.

Hays is 45-8.  Pittsburg falls to 32-15.

Hays for the first time in the tournament out it their opponent 14-10.  The Eagles had two errors and stranded eight runners.  Pittsburg had just the one fielding error leading to a first inning run and left 13 runners on base.

Hays moves on to the Mid-South Regional in New Orleans, LA to take on the Tennessee champion on August 9th.

Walk-off Wild Pitch Win for Monarchs at “AA” State Tournament

The Hays Monarchs capitalized on the only mistake that Hays or Pratt made in an elimination game on Saturday morning in Sabetha, 2-1 over two time defending champions Pratt. Shane Zimmerman threw just 83 pitches in the seven inning complete game performance. Zimmerman allowed just two hits and one run.

The game was tied at one into the bottom of the seventh when Nathan Zimmerman walked, Pierce Schippers singled, and Dylan Gottschalk walked to load the bases with nobody out to start the inning. Colby Schippers and Shane Zimmerman each struck out setting up potential heroics for Nick Hammeke. Hammeke fell behind 0-2 on the pitch count, but relief pitcher B.J. Dean threw a wild pitch to the back stop that allowed Nathan Zimmerman to score from third for the 2-1 victory.

Hays advances to the championship Saturday at 2pm. If they win, they will play a second championship game Sunday at 10am. The Monarchs lost 8-6 in nine innings to Iola Friday in a game that lasted just 1 hour an 22 minutes.

Eagles Advance To “AAA” Championship

The bats came alive as the Hays Eagles remain undefeated in three games at the American Legion State Tournament in Manhattan with an 11-8 win over Pittsburg.  Hays pounded out 12 hits but where out-hit by Pittsburg who had 14.

Hays led off the game with four in the top of the first inning for a second game in a row, but Pittsburg responded with three in the bottom of the first on two Eagle errors.  Each team scored one in the second inning for a 5-4 score.  Neither team scored in the third or fourth inning.

Hays blew the game open on a four run fifth inning that was highlighted by a Zack Legleiter RBI triple and a two out, two RBI single for Austin Unrein.  Unrein’s at bat was made possible by two errors on one ground ball with one out that allowed both Taylor Renz and Dan Bittel to remain on the base paths.  Hays led 9-4 after the fifth.

The Eagles picked up two more runs in the top of the sixth on a two out, two RBI single by Taylor Renz.  Hays led after the top half of the sixth inning 11-4.  Pittsburg would chip away at the lead with a run in the sixth, two in the seventh, and one in the eighth.

Hays win moves the Eagles to the championship game on Saturday at 3:00.  They will play the Newton/Salina v Pittsburg winner, a game that will be played at noon.

Tyler Woolridge (9-0) threw seven innings, allowing seven runs on twelve hits.  Woolridge struck out two and walked four.  Hayden Hutchison threw the final two innings allowing one run on two hits, two walks and one strike out.

The Eagles are 44-8.  Pittsburg falls to 31-13.

 

Eagles Advances At “AAA” State Tournament

The Hays Eagles used a dominant pitching performance from Austin Unrein to advance at the American Legion AAA tournament in Manhattan on Thursday by winning over Newton 8-1.  Hays led 2-1 after the first inning when Unrein retired 13 of the next 14 batters.

Hays scored single runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings to take a 5-1 lead.  Newton got two aboard with nobody out in the bottom of the sixth but failed to score.  The Eagles then scored three in the top of the seventh to blow the game open.

Unrein struck out 13 batters over eight innings of work in his ninth win of the summer.  Hays recorded eight hits while leaving ten runners on board.  Newton got only three hits and committed three errors.

Hays is now 43-8 on the season and will play in the semi-finals against either Manhattan or Pittsburg on Friday.  The game was in progress at the posting of this story.  Newton drops to 26-16 and will play Leavenworth in a elimination game at ten on Friday morning.  Salina eliminated Winfield and Leavenworth eliminated Easton in the morning session.

 

Hays Eagles Survive Day One At “AAA” State Tournament

Just like the NCAA basketball tournament, the motto with summer baseball is “survive and advance.”  The Hays Eagles did just that during the opening round of the American Legion AAA State Baseball Tournament in Manhattan on Wednesday, beating Winfield 8-6.  Ten game winner Josh Heifner gave up four runs on four hits in the first inning of the game over 44 pitches.  Hays though responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first by Austin Unrein, Riley Kaus, and Hayden Hutchison.

Hays tied the game at four in the bottom of the second inning on a Hutchison sacrifice fly to score Casey Sedbrook.  Winfield regained the lead in the top of the third with back to back doubles and led 5-4 to the bottom of the fourth.

Hays plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth on RBI’s from Zack Legleiter and Trevor Henningson, giving the Eagles a lead they would not relinquish.

Heifner (11-1) settled in after the first to pitch seven innings allowing five runs on eight hits walking just three and striking out five.  Tyler Woolridge pitched a scoreless eighth.  Austin Unrein allowed a run in the ninth while earning his second save of the summer.  The save of the game though may have come from center fielder Dan Bittle.  Bittle threw out a Winfield runner trying to score from second in the ninth inning that left the game with two on and one out instead of bases loaded and no outs.

Hays is 42-8 on the summer.  Winfield falls to 19-10.

Notes: Hays will play Thursday at 5:00 against Newton who beat Salina 10-3… The Eagles did plate runs in the fifth and eighth innings as well… Winfield out hit Hays 13-6.  Winfield committed three errors while Hays had 2… Hays stranded 12 base runners while Winfield left 13 on… Hays was playing with out head coach Brad Kelly who was in Hays for the birth of his second son Brant.

Hays Beats Great Bend In Zone Play

Riley Kaus knocked in three runs and scored four as the Hays Eagles beat Great Bend 9-4 to advance to the championship game of the Zone tournament at Larks Park on Monday night.

The Eagles never trailed in the game and matched runs scored by Great Bend in the fifth and seventh innings.

Great Bend did get runners to second and third with one out but Austin Unrein got out of the eighth inning on a pop up and strike out.  Hays batted around and scored four in the bottom of the eighth to take a 9-2 lead into the ninth.

Great Bend loaded the bases in the ninth with one out, scored two runs before Tyler Wooldridge struck out the final batter to end the game.

Unrein gets the victory with 13 strike outs, four hits, two runs, hitting two batters and walking six.
Hays will play at 6:30 in the championship game against either Dodge City or Great Bend who play an elimination game on Tuesday at 4:30.

 

Hays wins 9-4 will play winner of Dodge City and Great Bend tomorrow at 6:30 for Championship game.  If Hays would lose the game, there will be a second championship game on Wednesday.

Hays Senior Legion Wins Wild West Festival Tournament

The Hays Eagles go 6-0 over the weekend to claim the Wild West Tournament. Sunday, the Eagles rallied from an early deficit to beat Great Bend 12-8 then knocked off the Topeka Capitals 4-1 in the title game. The Eagles improve to 35-4 on the season. They travel to Salina for a doubleheader with the Falcons Tuesday.

The Hays Eagles needed just one strong inning at the plate, versus the Topeka Capitals to claim the championship of the Wild West Tournament on Sunday. Jarrett Sanders hit a towering two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning, the only inning the Eagles would score. Zach Legleiter followed the home run with a single and a stolen base.  Daniel Bittle scored Legleiter with a double, then scored on Casey Sedbrook’s double.

The four run second inning would be all that pitcher Austin Unrein needed in the 4-1 victory. Topeka got the game’s first batter aboard due to an error, then following a fielder’s choice at second, Unrein and his defense retired 17 batters in a row. The Capitals scored a run in the seventh with a one out RBI single (the batter was thrown out by right fielder Casey Sedbrook trying to stretch the hit into a double).

Topeka managed just two hits over seven innings, scored just one run and committed three errors.  Hays scored four runs on six hits and had only one error.

Semifinals: Eagles 12, Great Bend 8
After Great Bend scored five in the first, the Eagles rally with four in the first and five in the second. Casey Sedbrook and Austin Unrein both drove in a run with a first inning double. Hayden Hutchison added a two-run homer to pull the Eagles within a run.

Unrien and Riley Kaus both drove in runs with singles in the second and Hutchison added a three-rum homer.

Hutchison (7-0) picks up the win allowing eight runs on 13 hits.

 

Larks Sweep El Dorado

The Hays Larks completed a three game sweep of El Dorado Sunday night with a 7-6 come from behind win.  The Larks committed seven errors on the night leading to most of the early runs by the Broncos.  Hays trailed until the bottom of the fifth inning when Austin Darby singled, scoring Zair Koeiman…Joe Betcher hit a sacrifice fly to score Jon Ryan…and Austin Jarvis also hit a RBI single scoring MacKenzie Handel.  Hays would trail again into the bottom of the seventh inning when Ryan Busboom crushed a two run home run giving the Larks the final edge 7-6.  Austin Cox picked up the win in relief pitching a scoreless eighth.  Colton Revis blew threw three hitters in the ninth for his third save of the summer.

Hays is 17-8 on the summer and 11-8 in Jayhawk League play.  El Dorado falls to 15-12 and 10-12.  The Larks took five of six on the season from El Dorado.

Hays is back on the road Monday night at Dodge City and Liberal on Tuesday, taking on the top two teams in the League.  The Larks sit third with fifteen games to go.

Hays Indians Move Into New Facility

The Hays High Indians have a new home in which to lift weights and train.  Staff and students move in equipment, weights, and machines on Monday, July 18th and are in their second week of using the new facility.

While the entire project is not complete, summer weights instructor Ryan Cornelson says it is nice to finally be in the building.  New weights and machines will be ordered to replace the current ones, along with cardio machines as well.  The current equipment will head to Hays Middle School.

Hays High Leads Boys Track After Day 1

The Hays High Indians lead Bishop Carroll by seven points after day number one of the state track meet in Wichita.  Hays has 41 points in the 5A standings to Carroll’s 34.  Only five events have been score, thirteen more will be scored on Saturday.

Cade Sharp won his second gold medal at state with a 161′ -2″ throw on his first throw of the day.  Luke Madden finished second throwing 153-09″ on his last throw.  Zach Binder finished sixth, throwing 143′-4″.

Adam Deterding and Derek Bixenman both jumped 6’6″ in the high jump sweeping the top two spots.  Deterding was awarded first on the tie-breaker.  Aaron Voss went 5’10” finishing tenth.

Adam Deterding and Dominque Carrasco both qualified for the finals in the 110 meter high hurdles.  Deterding qualified first with a time of 14.82 seconds, Carrasco finished 8th with a qualifying time of 15.87.

Adam Deterding, TJ Dreiling, and Jordan Windholz finished sixth, seventh and eighth respectively in the triple jump.  Deterding jumped 44′-7.75″.  Dreiling jumped 44′-3.25″.  Windholz just missed placing at 44′-1.25″.

The 4×100 meter team qualified for the finals in sixth.

The 4×400 meter team qualified for the finals in second.

Josh Brungardt and Shawn Herrman did not qualify in the 400 meters.

Derek Drees finished 9th and Dallas Kaiser finished 16th in the 3200 meters.

Kyler Meyers did not record a height in the pole vault.  Hayden Kruetzer finished out of the points in tenth with a 12’6″ vault.

Wendy Zimmerman placed 6th in the high jump at 5’2″.

Hanna Pfannenstiel did not qualify for the finals in the 400 meters finishing 9th.

The 4×400 meter relay finished 11th and did not qualify for Saturday.

Ashlynn Parish and Mattison Schlaefli did not qualify in the 100 meter hurdles.

Ashlynn Paris did not qualify for the finals in the 300 meter hurdles.

 

Hays High Soccer Moves On To State Semifinals

The record season that the Hays High soccer team has put together this year will live on for two more games after a 2-1 double overtime win against state power Kapaun Mt. Carmel on Tuesday in Hays.  The game again featured a lot of wind, just like the regional final did the week prior that the Indians won on penalty kicks.

Hays though had to fight from behind as Kapaun scored within the first two minutes to open the game with the wind at the backs.  Kapaun would get six total shots on goal to just one for Hays High in the first half, Hays though would not allow another goal.

The score remained 1-0 in the favor of Kapaun deep into the second half until Lauren Murphy tied the game at one.  In the second half Hays had six shots on goal, while Kapaun had just one into the wind.

Hays appeared to score the winning goal in the first overtime into wind, but was called for off-sides.  Kapaun did threaten deep into Hays territory several times in the first overtime, but the Hays defense yielded barely any shots.

Hays High then controlled most of the second overtime, getting a shot blocked, missing on two corner kicks and hitting the right post over a ninety second span.  Eventually Lauren Murphy scored her second goal of the game off a shot from near midfield that bounded twice, and on the second bounce went over the top of Kapaun’s goalie and into the net.

Hays is now, 16-3, further extending their record for wins in a season.  Kapaun Mt. Carmel finishes at 14-5.

The Indians are onto the state semi-finals in Topeka at the Hummer Sports Complex.  The Indians will play either at 5:00 or 7:00 on Friday.  The consolation game and championship game are on Saturday.
