An amazing week at Hays High School culminated with a dominating performance at the regional track meet in Salina by the two-time state champion boys team on Friday.  Hays High won the meet by 149 points.  The boys qualified in 28 indivdual events and three relays.

The Hays High Indian soccer team advanced to the quarterfinal tournament for the first time in program history with a 1-0 penalty kick win over Andover Central.  The Indians hosted the regional championship game on a windy Thursday evening that saw no regulation goals nor in any of the four overtimes.

Hays High came close to tallying a goal late in the second half when April Johnson hit the bottom half of the cross bar, the ball caromed straight and then back up when the goalie found the ball.

Andover Central thought they had won game in the first overtime with the wind at the backs playing havoc on the ball.  Taylor Herman saved the game on a header along the goal off a Jaguar corner kick.  The header went out of bounds setting up Andover Central for another corner kick that found the net, however the official immediately discounted the goal because of a player moving Indian goalie Laura Truman. 

Hays had four shots on goal in the second overtime with the wind at their backs with non really threatening the Andover Central Goal keeper.

Neither team got a very good look at the goal in the five minute third and fourth over time periods. 

The game finally came down to penalty kicks, and that too had its own drama.  Shelby Dinkel shot and scored first for the Indians and then was matched by Andover Central.  Rachel Luedders had her shot blocked but the Jaguar goalie was declared to not have started on the goal line resulting in a rekick that Luedder converted.  Andover Central again matched the penalty kick goal and then tied the PKs at three after Shannon Shubert nailed her shot.  Megan Bird made the fourth  kick for Hays High then goalie Laura Truman made a stop to set up sophomore Lacey Pfannenstiel with the game winner. 

Hays is now 15-3, further extending their school record. 

Post season will continue for Hays High on Tuesday, May 22nd.

Both the Hays High Indians baseball and softball teams have earned number one seeds in their regional tournaments.  The number one seed also means that Hays High will be hosting their portion of the tournament.  Hays will host the tournaments on Tuesday.

The Hays High Indian softball team finished the season at 18-2 with losses to Great Bend and Garden City.  Hays is in a seven team regional which means they will receive a bye in the first round.  #1 seeded Hays will face either #4 Valley Center (14-4) or #5 seed Goddard (13-7). Valley Center and Goddard will play at 4:00.  Hays will play the winner at approximately 5:15 in the championship.  The games will be played Glassman ball fields.

The Hays High Indians baseball team finished the season 18-2 and as the Western Athletic Conference champions for a second year in a row.  Hays will play the eight seed Goddard-Eisenhower (5-15) at 4:00 on Tuesday.  Game one will be between the four seed Salina Central (11-9) and five seed Salina South (8-12) at 2:00.  The championship game will be at approximately at 6:00 at Hays High School.

The Hays High Indians have won back-to-back Western Athletic Conference baseball crown by sweeping  Dodge City in make-up games from earlier in the season.  The Indians finish the conference season at 8-0 and have an overall record of 18-2.  With the sweep Hays also earns the #1 seed in the regional to be hosted Tuesday at Hays High School with times to be determined.

Hays High and Dodge City essentially played three seven inning games instead of two on Friday night as game one went 14 innings before Hays won 2-1.  Austin Unrein started the game and went six innings giving up only two hits and one run for the no decision.  Hayden Hutchison came on in relief pitching eight innings and picking up the win.  Hutchison allowed four hits and no runs in moving to 5-0 on the season.  Zach Legleiter hit an RBI double to knock in the winning run in the top of the 14th.  Unrein and Hutchison struck out a combined eleven in the game.  Hays stranded 18 runners on the day, while Dodge left 10 on the base paths.

Tyler Wooldridge pitched a seven inning complete game shutout moving his season record to 4-0.  Woolridge struck out ten in the second of the two games.  Tyler finishes the regular season with a 0.00 ERA over 18 innings pitched.  Hays won the second game 6-0.  Unrein and Legleiter each had two RBI on the day.

Dodge City mustered just one unearned run in the 21 total innings.  The Red Demons scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second inning of game one.

With 105 wins Cash Drylie will have his name among the career win leaders in Hays High wrestling.  In fact he came within nine victories of Jamie Hart who had 114.  The hard working wrestler inked his national letter of intent on Monday with Colby Community College, one of the top programs in the nation.  Drylie finished off his senior year with a runner-up finish in class 5A at 220 pounds.  Drylie also ended the year with a 38-3 record, two of those losses to the eventual state champion at 5A and a single loss to the runner up in class 3-2-1A.

Drylie won championships at Hays High’s Bob Kuhn Classic and the Rocky Welton invite in Garden City.

According to coach Abby Maska, Makenzie Flaska will go down as one of the better hitters in Hays High history.  Going into the final week of the regular season, Flaska signed a national letter of intent to play softball for the Newman Jets.  The senior is a career .401 hitter with 96 RBI, 56 runs, 25 doubles, 3 triples, and nine home runs.  Makenzie has struck out just 23 times over four years.  Flaska has played three different positions over the years, third base, pitcher and second base.  With an over .900 career fielding percentage, Flaska was told she is slotted to play short stop at Newman.  Making thirteen career appearances as a pitcher, Flaska has recorded a 6-0 record while starting ten games.

Part of a very talented senior group, Flaska has played since arriving at Hays High appearing in 74 games and starting 70.

Hays enters the final week of the regular season with a 17-1 overall record and 6-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.  Hays needs to sweep Garden City on Tuesday night to share the conference crown with Great Bend and keep pace with 17-1 Goddard-Eisenhower for the #1 regional seed that comes with a bye in the first round.

Tanner Staab has had an impressive high school varsity track career for the Hays High Indians.  He will continue his track career at Fort Hays State University after signing his letter of intent with the Tigers on Thursday.

Staab is on a 4×800 meter relay team that has never been beaten while he has been a member and has a couple of team state championship trophies to  show off in the halls of the high school.  Staab’s events this year include the 4×400 meter relay which is likely to be a contender at the 5A state meet and is one of the state’s top 800 meter runners.

Also a good soccer player for the Indians, Staab felt that track was a better fit for his future plans with the Tigers after visiting with the FHSU coaches.

Hays High senior Sydney Schmeidler signed her letter of intent to play volleyball for Kansas Wesleyan University on Thursday at Hays High School.

A two year starter, Schmeidler narrowed her choices down to Fort Hays State University and KWU, made the decision on her recruiting trip to the Salina college.

Schmeidler, a setter,  collected over 400 assists her senior year and will be playing the same position for the NAIA national champion Coyotes.

Hays High sophomore Preston Weigel placed only one spot better at the 2012 5A state wrestling championship than a year ago.  But that one spot was enough to give the 170 pounder a state championship.  Weigel lost just once this season finishing the season at 39-1.  Weigel was tested just once in the tournament.  Weigel one by fall in the first round in just 1:35 the won by a 15-0 technical fall in the quarterfinals.  After a 6-0 decision over Johnny Perz of St. Thomas Aquinas, Weigel won by a 16-0 technical fall in the championship.

Cash Drylie finished second at 220 pounds.  Drylie finishes his season at 38-3 with two of his losses coming to the 220 champion Luke Bean of Kapaun Mt. Carmel.  The senior won by fall in just :58 in the first round, by 7-0 decision in the quarters and then moved to the championship with a 1-0 decision.

Kyler Meyers finished sixth at 160 pounds after reaching the semi-finals on Friday.  Meyers finishes his junior campaign at 32-14.

Senior Derek Stiles finished in fifth place at the 126 pound weight class.  He to reached the semi-finals on Friday.  Stiles finishes his season at 35-10.

Freshman Ethan Deterding also took sixth at 152 pounds.  Deterding finishes the season at 31-16.  After losing his second round match, Deterding Ethan had to wrestle four backside matches.

As a team the Indians placed ninth with 82.5 points.  Arkansas City, Newton, and Goddard took the top three team spots.  Arkansas City won the team title without an individual state champion.
