Born April/22/1936 in Vinita, Oklahoma to Luther Bryant and Esther Miles, Died Oct/12/2019 In Tulsa OK.

She Married Leslie Bearly in 1958, they were married 51 years, until his passing in 2009. Then she Married Chester Thompson in 2011. She Had 2 children: Don Bearly spouse Rebekah of Raytown, Mo and Penny Peabody and spouse Mike Peabody of Dayton, NV and their son Kyle, Jalene’s only grandchild.

She was always proud of her Cherokee Ancestry, she was a member of the First Families of the Cherokee nation through Sequoyah, Maj George Lowery Sr and Chief Richard Fields. She enjoyed many hobbies including sewing and crating costumes for penny’s competitions for modeling, dancing and baton twirling.

She worked as a nurse’s aide at the Larnard State hospital and in Ottawa, KS. She did bead work. She was a cub scouts den mother, she was also a seamstress, did upholstery and Interior Design. She supported her son and daughter in their many activities throughout her life. She passed into heaven being a beloved wife and mother. She is survied by both her children and grandson and Chester Thompson.

Dorothy V. (Lohr) Mangus

Dorothy V. (Lohr) Mangus, age 92, lifetime resident of Kanorado passed away Monday, October 14, 2019 at Topside Manor in Goodland.

Dorothy was born October 31, 1926 to Theodore Edward and Elma (Radar) Lohr in Denver, Colorado. She grew up and went to school in Kanorado. On April 4th, 1945 she married Garth Dewaine Mangus in Goodland.

Dorothy worked as a switch board operator and a farm wife. She was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Goodland. She enjoyed playing cards, dancing on Saturday nights and dearly loved spending time with her family and friends.

Preceding her in death are her parents and grandparents; husband, Garth; son, Mickey Pug; sisters and brother-in-laws, Phyllis and Boyd Billenwillms and Gladys and Dale McBride.

She is survived by her son, Danny (Charlene) Mangus of Kanorado, KS; brother, Theodore Edward (Darlene) Lohr of Castle Rock, CO; sister, Marsha McGillivaray of Goodland, KS; grandsons, Michael (Filippa) of Raleigh, NC; Steven (Chynna) of Goodland, KS; Devin (Shelby) Des Moines, IA; granddaughter, Dani (Kyler) Zweygardt of Hays, KS; great granddaughter, Danica; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be Saturday, October 19, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. MT at the Kanorado Cemetery, 301 Locust Street in Kanorado. James Arnold Schindler

James Arnold Schindler, age 81, passed away on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. He was born on October 23, 1937 in Goodland, Kansas, the son of John and Frances Nestor Schindler. Arnold graduated from Sherman Community High School in 1955. He started working at Newton Machine Shop and Auto Parts and then went to work at Finley Pontiac until 1968.

He met and married Beulah Riddle in December of 1957. They have two children, Rhonda & Clete Hertensen of Shawnee, Oklahoma, and Rick Schindler of Texas. Arnold has five grandchildren, Dustin, Brandi, Reid, Rance and Sara, and five Great Grandchildren, MaHaley, Nevaeh, Piper, Karsten and Elle.

Arnold and his wife Beulah moved to Liberal, Kansas where he taught at the Liberal Vo Tech in the Auto Mechanic department for 18 years. He divorced Beulah in 1983.

In January of 1984 he married Marilyn K. Boehme Michael in Oahu, Hawaii. Marilyn brought two daughters to this relationship, Anita Michael of Goodland, Kansas, and Lori & George Frecks of Stratton, Colorado and Five Grandsons, Paul, Lucas, Christopher, Tim & Katee, and Josh & Carly and Eight Great Grandchildren, Andrew, Hunter, Daxton, Paisley, Aveya, Allee, Bentley and Colton & Zoey.

During this marriage they lived in Kingman, Kansas and then in Brewster, Kansas before settling in Scott City, Kansas. Arnold & Marilyn owned and operated A&M Auto Sales, Flatlander Snack Foods and the Brewster Grocery Store where Arnold was known for his sausage making ability and his fresh meat market. They left the business and moved to Scott City, Kansas in 2007 to enjoy retirement.

Arnold is survived by his Wife – Marilyn of Scott City, Kansas, One Son – Rick Schindler of Texas, One Daughter – Rhonda & Clete Hertensen of Shawnee, Oklahoma, Two Step Daughters – Anita Michael of Goodland, Kansas and Lori & George Frecks of Stratton, Colorado, One Sister – Mary Puttroff of Goodland, Kansas, One Sister In Law – Evelyn Schindler of Goodland, Kansas, Ten Grandchildren and Fourteen Great Grandchildren.

Graveside Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m (1:00 p.m. MST) on Friday October 25, 2019 at the Goodland Cemetery in Goodland, Kansas with Mike Baughn presiding.

Memorials can be made to the Arnold Schindler Memorial Fund in care of Price & Sons Funeral Homes.

Interment will be in the Goodland Cemetery in Goodland, Kansas.

James Ray Dyer

James Ray Dyer, 23, passed away on Oct. 6, 2019, in Haginta, Guam.

He was born April 8, 1996, in Springfield, Mo., the son of Ryan and Yvonne (Harris) Dyer. He graduated from Scott Community High School in 2014. He joined the U.S. Navy in July 2014. Following basic training, he attended Machinist Mate A School, graduating on Nov. 26, 2014. During his first tour of duty, he served on the USS Donald Cook (DDG75) that was homeported in Rota, Spain, from January 2015 to March 2018. He then checked aboard the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit FIVE (EODMU FIVE) in May 2018.

He received special qualifications as an Expeditionary Warfare Specialist in June 2019. Other ribbons and awards include: Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Navy “E” Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon, Marksman M16/M4 Rifle, and Sharpshooter 9mm Pistol qualification. He received both the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and the Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon four times. He had been a 4-Her, member of Boy Scouts and a volunteer for the USO while serving in Guam.

Survivors include, his parents, Ryan Dyer, Garden City, and Yvonne (Harris) Hall and husband, Kevin, Scott City; one brother, Zachery Dyer and wife, Shayna, Springfield, Mo; a sister, Hayley Kane-Rigney, Wichita; grandparents, Randy Shearmire and James Harris and wife, Linda, Springfield, Mo; step-sisters, Kelsi Meireis, Kimberly Hall and Kassandra Hall, all of Scott City; a step-brother, Christopher Hall and wife, Sara, Scott City; Two aunts, Raeanna Jenkins, Clever, MO and Patricia Christian and husband Dennis, Topeka; two uncles, Donald Shearmire and wife Sharon, Enid, OK and Travis Shearmire and wife Teresa, Springfield, Mo and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a grandmother, Kathi Shearmire; one uncle, Darrel Jenkins

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 19, 2019 at the First Christian Church in Scott City, Kansas with Raul Silva Sr. and Rodney Hopper presiding.

Memorials are suggested to the James Dyer Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home, 401 South Washington St., Scott City, Ks. 67871.

Interment will be in the Modoc Cemetery in Modoc, Kansas.

James F. Ballinger

James F. Ballinger, 78, died on Sunday, October 13, 2019 at Greeley County Long Term Care in Tribune. He was born on December 5, 1940 at Protection the son of James M. & Bessie (Ewing) Ballinger. He married Alena R. Diller on November 15, 1963 at Johnson.

James grew up and graduated from high school at Walsh, Colorado. After completing his education he worked for Osteen Electric and farmed with his family before moving to Johnson and working at the Co-op Grocery Store. In 1969 he moved to Tribune and was the Assistant Manager at Gooch’s Foods for the rest of his career. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tribune and formerly belonged to the Archery Club. He enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by his Parents, Brother- Ronald Ballinger & 4 Sisters- Elsie Hammond, Alice Murray, Ilene Herron & Bonnie Jones.

He is survived by his Wife- Alena Ballinger, 2 Daughters- Sloan L. & Kevin Shafer of Tribune and Bridget Rae Ballinger of Hays, Son- James Bart & Jennifer Ballinger of Goddard, Sister- Catherine Dillon of Pueblo, Colorado and 4 Grandchildren- Bryce Shafer, Paige Shafer, Megan Peitz & Taylor Ballinger.

Funeral Service will be at 10:00 AM MDT Friday at the First Baptist Church in Tribune with Pastor Shanon Schneider officiating. Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery. Robert LeRoy ‘Bob’ Balloun

Robert LeRoy “Bob” Balloun, 91, Russell, Kansas, passed away Monday, October 14, 2019 at his home. Bob was born December 10, 1927 in Hays, Kansas. He was one of five children born to Rudolph George and Mabelle (Britt) Balloun. He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the Class of ’46.

Bob served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII as a combat engineer. His 2-year tour was spent serving in Japan as part of the occupation. After his discharge, he returned to the Russell area. Bob was united in marriage to Nancy Jane Edwards on July 24, 1949, in Russell. This union was blessed with three daughters; MaryAnn, Jane and Janet. They made their home in Russell. Nancy preceded him in death on December 15, 2018. Bob owned and operated Oiline Cleaning Company, working in the oil fields for 35 years. After selling his business, he worked in law enforcement serving Russell as Sheriff for 10 years. He established and conducted new educational programs to improve safety and educate children in drug prevention, seatbelt safety, and prevention of drunk driving. He started Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous Programs for inmates, as well as Bible Study and counseling to support & teach skills to help inmates assimilate back into society.

Bob continued to seek ways to serve his community. He was co-founder of Russell Food Pantry, serving as President and board member for 20 years. He served on the Citizens Review Board and was chosen as Russell’s “Man of the Year 1991.” He was active in the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240, the Russell Elks Lodge and Russell Rotary Club. With his love of outdoors and nature, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, skiing, and camping with his family. Bob and Nancy loved spending time with their children and their grandchildren and great grandchildren. He especially enjoyed traveling with his siblings seeing new places and making great memories. He also undertook new hobbies learning to make jelly, canning, baking and gardening.

Bob’s surviving family includes his three daughters, MaryAnn Kuhn (Mark) of Wichita, Kansas, Jane Ellen Law (Michael) of Kansas City, Missouri, Janet Kay Stremel (Jerry) of Brevard, North Carolina; his brother Eugene Balloun of Kansas City, Kansas; Sister Betty Boxberger of Russell, Kansas; seven grandchildren and eight grandchildren. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; wife Nancy; brothers George Balloun and Lloyd Balloun.

Celebration of Bob’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M., Friday, October 18, 2019 at Trinity United Methodist Church of Russell. Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery where Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 Honor Guard will conduct Military Rights. Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. to 8:00 PM, Thursday, October 17, 2019 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Anita Joy Payne

Anita Joy Payne, 87, a longtime resident of Salina, passed away peacefully in her sleep and entered Heavens Gate Sunday, Oct. 13, 2019. She was born Sept. 1, 1932 to Jacob and Bea Bauer of Arnold, Kan.

Anita has been a CNA, Activity Director, and a Insurance Agent in her past careers. She loved good food (especially Cheeto puffs and chocolate), socializing, good movies, and had a smile that would light up the room that will be missed so very much.

Our family would like to thank Arbor Court for caring for her like family, Salina Regional Hospital, Salina Accessible Home Care and Kansas Christian Home for the wonderful care they provided her.

Anita is survived by: her five children, Martie L. George, grandson, Eric M. Manley, Michael L. (Mona) Quenzer, granddaughters, Taryn M. Quenzer, and Brooke E. Angelo, Perry W. Quenzer, granddaughters, Cassy J. Taylor, Chessa S. Quenzer, and grandson, Joel J. Quenzer, Michelle R. Quenzer, Angela S. Davis (Greg), granddaughter LaCrista J. Brightbill and grandson, Cole A. Brightbill; She also has 13 great-grandchildren; and many special friends at Arbor Court.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; and husband of 43 years, Harold T. Payne. She was a loving mother and grandmother who loved us all unconditionally.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, with family present 4-6 p.m. at Ryan Mortuary.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, also at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N 8th St., Salina, with burial following in Gypsum Hill Cemetery.

Karl Albert Newacheck

Karl Albert Newacheck, 87, of Russell went to be with the Lord on October 14, 2019, while surrounded by his family. He was born to Karl Clarence Newacheck and Amalia (Mollie) Strecker Newacheck on November 17, 1931, in Russell, Kansas.

Karl was born and raised in Russell, Ks. He graduated from Russell High School in 1949 and then attended Bethany College two years. Karl is a US Veteran. In January 1952, he enlisted in the Air Force. He went to Korea in January 1954 and spent a year there at Kimpo K-14 and Oson K-55, as well as two weeks in Japan for advanced schooling. He came back to A.F.B. Riverside, California, where he was posted until his discharge in January of 1956. He returned toRussell for a short time and then went to Kansas City to television school for 3 months. After television school, he returned to Manhatten, Ks to Lab T.V. where he worked for a year.

In 1959, he met and fell in love with Marlene Ronningen of Carpio, N.D. They later married on June 12,1960 at St. John’s Lutheran Church. From this marriage were born 4 children, Tim, Tami, David and Scott. Marlene passed away April 25, 1988. On September 12, 1992 he married his second love Louise Dreher. In 2002 they moved to his home in Russell. Louise later passed away on December 14, 2007.

He is survived by his 4 children: Tim Newacheck of Baldwin City, Ks., Tami (Mark) Thompson of Salina, Ks., David (Creath) Newacheck of Waldo Ks, Scott (Sherry) Newacheck of Russell, Ks.; 7 grandchildren: Katrina and Dominick Thompson, Brittany McCampbell and Chase Newacheck, and Zachary, Caleb and Abigail Newacheck and one Great-grandson, Spencer Axelson; step daughters Lois Sellers and Carol Trapp; 5 step grandchildren, 8 step great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and his beloved cats.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, and his three sisters: Mary David, IdaRose Willson, and Delores Axelson.

A celebration of Karl’s life will be 10:30 A.M. on Monday, October 21, 2019, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, with Pastor Ron Wedel officiating. Burial will follow at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Russell, Kansas, with military honors performed by the Russell V.F.W. Post 6240. Visitation will be from 1 P.M. to 8 P.M. on Sunday, October 20, 2019, at the mortuary with family greeting guests from 3 P.M. to 5 P.M. Sunday afternoon. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be given to the Big Creek Veterinary Clinic and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Laurin ‘Stub’ Herl

Laurin “Stub” Herl, age 85 of Plainville, passed away Tuesday morning, October 15, 2019 at his home in Plainville. He was born in Hays, Kansas on July 15, 1934, to Bernard “Barney” and Ida (Ruder) Herl. Stub grew up in Hays where he graduated from St. Joseph Military Academy.

He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Elaine Kuhn on October 5, 1953 where they made their home in Plainville, Kansas. They were blessed with five children: Stan, Pam, Brenda, Marla, and Dale “Barney”.

Stub worked in the oilfields until he retired. However, his passion was working with his hands, especially with wood. One of his most profound projects was adding an addition onto the house; he took the existing two-story house and converted it into a one-story by building a new roof under the existing roof before it was removed. Over the years he has built and crafted beautiful furniture such as end tables, a cedar chest, and three desks (one of which was a roll top), but the projects he was most proud of were the grandfather clocks he made for each of his children. There was nothing he could not do.

Stub is survived by his children, Stan Herl of Edmond, OK., Pam Arrambidez of Roanoke, TX., Brenda Miller (Harley) of Stockton, KS., Marla Plante (John) of Plainville, KS., and Dale “Barney” Herl (Ronda) of Grapevine, TX.; brother, Tom Herl of Dallas, TX.; sisters, Frances Diehl and Lila Staab of Hays, KS.; 10 grandchildren, David Herl, Elizabeth Becker, Jacob Herl, Matt Arrambidez, Austin Miller, Colby Miller, Lindsey Plante, Adam Plante, Zachary Herl, Tanner Herl; and 9 great-grandchildren.

Stub was preceded in death by his parents Bernard “Barney” and Ida Herl; wife, Elaine Herl; brothers, Larry “Gene” Herl and Leander Herl; sister, Orie Haas; and grandchildren, Andrew Miller and Jennifer Benedick.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 18, 2019 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville starting at 2:00 PM. A book signing will be held at Plumer Overlease Funeral Home on Thursday, October 17, 2019 from 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM. Family will be receiving friends at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a parish vigil starting at 7:00PM.

Lyndell E. Fox

Lyndell E. Fox, 82, died October 14, 2019 at Diversicare of Larned.

He was born February 5, 1937 in Larned, the son of Emmett and Nevin Bates Fox.

A lifetime area resident he worked for Tabler Furniture, Larned. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Optimist Club, both of Larned. Lyndell was an avid sports fan. He had a vital part in reviving the American Legion Baseball Program and was an announcer for American Legion baseball games for fifteen years.

He married Deanne Hanken; and later, on Aug 15, 1965 he married Connie Fox at Ellsworth, she survives.

Other survivors include; two daughters, Allison Fox, Woodbury, Minnesota, Whitney Fox, Kansas City, Missouri; son, Kevin (Jane) Fox, Larned; two grandchildren, Tyler (Sarah) Fox, Richardson, TX, Katie (Clayton) Havelka, Springfield, Missouri; four great grandchildren, Jackson and Will Fox, Richardson, Texas, Gideon and Noelle Havelka, Springfield, Missouri; sister, Judy (Fred) Jennings, Larned.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Galen Fox.

Funeral will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, with Pastor Tricia North presiding. Burial will be at a later date in Larned Cemetery, Larned. Visitation 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned.

Houston Gerald Price Jr.

Houston Gerald Price Jr., 83, died on Friday, October 11, 2019 in Garden City. He was born on September 6, 1936 at Wichita the son of Houston Gerald & Juanita Velvet (Roby) Price, Sr. He married Donna Jean Armstrong on April 27, 1958 at Sharon Springs.

Gerald moved with his family to Tribune when he was 5. The family moved to Poteau, Oklahoma for a couple of years before returning to Tribune where he attended Tribune Grade School and graduated from Sharon Springs High School. He attended Garden City Community College and then joined his Father on the family farm where they raised crops along with cattle and sheep. While continuing to work on the farm he worked for 19 years with the Greeley County National Resource Conservation Service. He was a Charter Member of the Tribune Baptist Church. He enjoyed playing cards of any kind, especially pinocle, poker and black jack. He was a member of Pitch Team that competed in Kansas and Oklahoma tournaments. He also enjoyed listening to Willie Nelson and watching Westerns but especially his family activities. He was preceded in death by his Parents, Sister- Billie Jean Williams, Son-In-Law- Brent Kinlund, 3 Grandchildren- Joey Cagle, Spencer Cundiff and Noah Cundiff and 1 Great-Grandson- Elijah Cundiff.

He is survived by his Wife- Donna Price, 4 Daughters- Judy Kinlund of Raton, New Mexico, Susan & Brad Sisk of Holcomb, Peggy & Abby Munoz of Garden City and Stacy & Randy Cundiff of Garden City, 9 Grandchildren- Jesse Cagle, Miles Cagle, Kris Sisk, Amber Sonnenberg, Brandi Sisk, Kelsi Johnston, Kayla Munoz, Cody Cundiff & Cayden Cundiff and 9 Great-Grandchildren- Katelynne Sisk, Gerald Sisk, Isaac Sonnenberg, Ronan Sonnenberg, Karter Johnston, Mace Johnston, Judah Cundiff, Demi Jo Cundiff & Ava Cundiff.

Funeral Service will be on Saturday, November 2 at 11:00 AM at Garden Valley Church in Garden City with Rev Steve Ensz officiating. James Lee “Jimmy” Wessel

James Lee “Jimmy” Wessel

James Wessel, age 49, passed away on Monday, October 14, 2019 in Wichita County, Kansas. He was born on September 10, 1970 in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Charles D. and Katherine L. Durant Wessel. A lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, James worked for Efrain Prieto , Kelly Conine, Gary Speer and was currently working for Barbie & Mark Wilbur Farming.

He attended the First Baptist Church of Scott City, Kansas.

On July 16, 2011 he married Amy Malchow in Scott City, Kansas. She survives.

Survivors include his one son – Kolemann Patton of Colorado; two stepchildren – Freedom & Braydin; mother – Katherine L. Wessel of Scott City, Kansas; one brother – Kenneth & Toni Wessel of Scott City, Kansas; and one sister – Barbie & Mark Wilbur of Leoti, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his father – Charles D. Wessel.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 19, 2019 at the Scott Lake State Park across from Camp Lakeside.
