Lucille Marie Peirano

Lucille Marie Peirano, 78, of Overland Park, KS, passed away Thursday, September 26, 2019.

Lucille was born January 25, 1941, in Hays, KS and grew up in Dorrance, KS and graduated in 1959. She worked at St. John’s Hospital in Salina and owned Designs and Accents Floral and Oakhurst Insurance, both in Salina, KS. She also volunteered at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Salina, KS. Lucille’s passion was painting.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harlan James (Jim) Peirano in 2011.

She is survived by her children David Peirano, Lisa Dixon, and Karen Hawley, grandchildren Devin Peirano, Daniel Peirano, Owen Dixon, Logan Dixon, Grace Hawley, Emma Hawley and David Hawley, brother Sonny Bohnen, sisters Helen Prester, Rita Kraus and many extended family and friends.

Memorial Mass will be 10:30 AM October 19, 2019, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, 2811 Avenue D, Wilson, KS 67490. Burial of Ashes will follow at the Catholic Cemetery in Wilson, Kansas. A reception will follow at the Midland Hotel in Wilson, KS. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Morutary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the memorial mass and graveside services.

Laura L. Meireis

Laura L. Meireis, age 67, passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.

She was born on December 3, 1951 in St. Francis, Kansas, the daughter of Jesse and Laura M. Raile Pugh. She was a resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1973 moving from St. Francis, Kansas. Laura was a elementary school teacher, teaching grades 2-3 in Beaver Flats School until moving to the Scott City Elementary School in 1986. For the last 3 years she has worked for High Plains Education.

Laura was a graduate of St. Francis High School, Fort Hays State University and was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Scott City, Kansas.

On June 8m 1974 she married Dwaine E. Meireis in St. Francis, Kansas. He survives.

Survivors include her Husband – Dwaine E. Meireis of Scott City, Kansas, Two Sons – Justin Meireis of Scott City, Kansas, Ryan Meireis of St. Marys, Kansas, Four Granddaughters – Justyce Meireis of Scott City, Kansas, Kaelynne Meireis of Scott City, Kansas, Johanna Meireis of Scott City, Kansas, Azure Meireis of St. Marys, Kansas, Mother – Laura M. Pugh of St. Francis, Kansas, One Brother – Bill & Sandy Pugh of Steamboat Springs, Colorado and One Sister – Patricia & Darryl Nichols of Stockton, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her Father.

Funeral Services will be held at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Scott City, Kansas at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 17, 2019 with Pastor Warren Prochnow presiding.

Memorials can be made out to the USD #466 Special Education in care of Price & Sons Funeral Homes.

Interment will be in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas.

Margaret Rose Wieser

Margaret Rose Wieser, age 93, passed away on Thursday, October 10, 2019 at her home at VIP Assisted Living in Surprise, Arizona.

Margaret was born January 1, 1926 in Leoti, Kansas, the daughter of John C. & Theresa M. (Goetz) Bauck. She attended St. Mary of The Plains High School in Dodge City, Kansas, transferred to and later graduated from Wichita County High School in Leoti, Kansas in 1943. Margaret worked for the Wichita County Rations Board, where she met her future husband, Mr. Lawrence Wieser.

Margaret & Lawrence were united in marriage on May 14, 1946 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marienthal, Kansas. They made their home in Leoti where they raised six children. Margaret was a wife, mother, homemaker, seamstress, artist and gardener.

Margaret was a lifelong member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Leoti, Kansas. She found her artistic talent after taking art & painting classes and produced many paintings, which she then sold or gave to family members and friends. Margaret had a lifelong love of gardening and later opened a greenhouse through Interstate Distributors in Leoti. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society. Margaret lived in Leoti until August of 2014 when she moved to Sun City, Arizona to be closer to family. She spent the past two years at VIP Assisted Living in Surprise, Arizona.

Margaret’s surviving family includes her Six Children – Diana & Oran Charlson of Sun City, Arizona, Steve & Linda Wieser of Topeka, Kansas, Pam Spinner of Surprise, Arizona, Michelle & Doug Pellant of Russell, Kansas, Judy & Jim Ireland of Ocean View, Maryland, Peggy & David Page of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Ten grandchildren and Fifteen great grandchildren.

Her parents, husband, son-in-law, Larry Spinner, five brothers, Joe, Carl, Frank, George & Clem Bauck and sisters, Helen Dinkel & Lucille Born precede her in death.

Vigil Services will be held at 7:00 pm Thursday, October 17, 2019 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Leoti, Kansas. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am Friday, October 18, 2019 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Leoti, Kansas with Fathers Tim Hickey & Meinrad Miller officiating. Burial will be in Leoti Cemetery in Leoti, Kansas.

Leland N. Smith

Leland N. Smith, age 89, passed away October 11, 2019 at Great Plains Health, in North Platte, Nebraska.

He was born to Theodore and Mildred (Hanchett) Smith-Elling in Rural Selden, Kansas on July 7, 1930. He was raised in rural Selden and Oberlin. Leland attended elementary school at Belleview Rural School and graduated from Decatur Community High School with the class of 1949. After graduation, he served his country by entering the United States Air Force during the Korean War. On August 31, 1952, he married Eloise Anderson at the Lund Covenant Church, Dresden, Kansas. Leland and Eloise celebrated 67 years of marriage. They raised two children, Marie and Wesley. Leland worked as a carpenter and helped build several houses in the Oberlin area. Leland and his son built the house where the family lives. Leland became a farmer and rancher and worked at it the rest of his life. He was a member of the Oberlin Covenant Church, American Legion Post #70, and Oberlin Country Club.

Leland and his family lived in rural Decatur County and in Oberlin. Leland loved to farm, and he wanted his children to learn the value of hard work. Besides work, Leland’s passion included bowling and golf. In 1984, Leland had open heart surgery to repair two valves. Leland’s surgeon told him if he survived ten years, he would invite him to play golf at Cherry Hills Country Club. Leland surprised his surgeon by surviving another 35 years.

Leland is survived by his wife Eloise of Oberlin; daughter, Marie Stapleton and her husband, John of Aurora, Colorado; son, Wesley Smith of Oberlin; grandchildren, Brian Smith, Lisa Johnson, and her husband Gary, and Jason Warren, and great grand-daughter, Nichole Warren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Smith and Mildred Smith-Elling; brother, Clayton Smith; sisters, Melba Hartley, Theodora May Reber, and her husband Johnny; sister-in-law, Phyllis Klich and her husband Jim Klich.

A Funeral Service is planned for Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at Pauls Funeral Home, Oberlin, Kansas at 2:30 P.M. Visitation will be from 1:00 P.M. until 2:30 P.M. Brent Lee Emery

Brent Lee Emery, age 27, of Topeka passed away Thursday evening October 3, 2019 in Colby, KS. Brent was born August 14, 1992 the son of Gary and Terry Coulter Emery, Jr. Brent attended school at Shawnee Heights High School. He currently was working at Hi-Plains Coop in Gem, Kansas.

Brent is survived by his mother, Terry (David) Hause of Brewster, KS; his father, Gary Emery Jr. of Ellsworth; maternal grandmother, Dorothy Emery of Meriden; maternal grandmother, Sharon Bath of Gypsum, KS; two brothers, Aaron Rhoads of Topeka and Ryan Hause of Brewster, KS; three sisters, Lindsay Koch of Topeka, Taylor Rhoads of Topeka and Hanna Hause of Brewster, KS; aunts, Tracy (Matt) Nicolay and Amy Busey; uncles, Jason Bath and Scott Bath; nephew, Dayton Orester and two nieces, Layla and Maycee Orester; and cousins, Paige and Sloan Nicolay, Wyatt Flewelling, Courtney Coker and Derek Busey.

Evelyn Rose Meitl

Evelyn Rose Meitl, 96, of Oberlin, went to be with the Lord on October 10, 2019 surrounded by her family. She was born in Rural Decatur County on October 9, 1923 to Arthur A. and Florence E. (Spiers) Orr. She was one of four children. Evelyn attended Elementary School at the District 23 Rural School and High School at Oberlin High School and Canton High School in Canton, Illinois. On November 23, 1943, Evelyn married Bernard J. Meitl at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Leoville, Kansas. They were blessed with a family of eleven children.

After Ben and Evelyn were married, they made their home on a farm northwest of Dresden until moving to the Meitl homeplace. She moved to Leoville and then Oberlin, Kansas where she has made her home for many years. Evelyn ran the grocery store in Leoville, Kansas from 1971-1972 and was part owner of the Dresden Thrift Shop. She would say her occupation was homemaker. She was a wonderful, loving mother and grandmother who helped on the farm and raised her family. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Leoville and Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oberlin, Sacred Heart Alter Society, Dresden Guild, and the American Legion Auxiliary of Dresden.

Evelyn worked hard keeping her home and volunteering at church, and where she was needed. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, doing family genealogy, playing cards, puzzles, and watching TV game shows. Her garden provided many good meals for her family. She liked to do quilting. She enjoyed family history and spent hours doing genealogy searches. Most of all her priority was her family. She enjoyed spending time with family and loved them dearly.

Evelyn is survived by her sons, David Meitl (Janet) of Dresden, Kansas, Ed Meitl (Janet) of Dresden, Kansas, Dan Meitl (Megan) of Oberlin, Kansas, Alvin Meitl (Karma) of Salina, Kansas; daughters, Pauletta Bieker (Gene) of Oberlin, Kansas, Patty Gray (Ron) of Wichita, Kansas, Betty McDowell PhD of Prattville, Alabama, Rose Chancellor of Gastonia, North Carolina, and Mary Cressler (Russell) of Jennings, Kansas; grandchildren , fifty-two; great-grandchildren, eighty-five; great-great grandchildren, twenty-three; and great-great-great grandchild, one; God-children, twelve; and many extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard (Ben) J. Meitl; parents, Arthur & Florence Orr; son, Larry Paul Meitl; daughter, Donna M. Boswell; brothers, Loyde R. Orr and Roy E. Orr; sister, Erlene Schroer; grandsons, Mickeal Quakenbush and infant grandson; three great-grandchildren, Blade Bieker ,Christina Quakenbush, and Aaron Phillips; sons-in-law, Tim Kinser, Robert Boswell, Tony Bieker, and Ken Chancellor; and daughter-in-law, Naomi Meitl.

A Mass of Christian Burial is planned for Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Leoville, Kansas, at 10:30 A.M. with Father Carlos presiding. Interment will follow the service in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Leoville. Edith Ione Strohm

Edith Ione Strohm, 98, passed away Saturday October 12, 2019, at River Bend Assisted Living, Great Bend. She was born January 16, 1921, in Windom, the daughter of Charles E. and Merle (Smith) Rostine. She was united in marriage to Wayne O. Strohm on October 6, 1940, in McPherson. He preceded her in death September 22, 2006.

A resident of Great Bend since 1957 coming from Lyons, Ione was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Great Bend, Christian Women Fellowship and The Feisty Five. Ione enjoyed reading, Bible studies, crafts, and cherished fellowship with her family and friends.

Survivors include one daughter, Dianna Werrick of Oklahoma City; two grandchildren, Andrea Komarek and husband Mike Koerner of Andover, and Mark Komarek of Phoenix, Ariz.; and two great grandchildren, Alyssa Komarek and Ashton Komarek.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Rostine and Charles L. Rostine; three sisters, Delta Bradford, Elma Frey and Drucilla Rostine; and by one grandson, Matthew Komarek.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, October 17, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Funeral will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 18, at the First Christian Church, Great Bend, with The Reverend Joshua Leu presiding. Tommy Joe Moorhous

Tommy Joe Moorhous passed away on October 8, 2019, at the age of 63, due to diabetes complications.

Tom was born to Johnny Ray and Annette (Robben) Moorhous on September 19th, 1956, in Oakley, KS. Upon graduating from Oakley High School, he graduated from Colby Community College and Fort Hays State University, with a Bachelor’s Degree of Fine Arts, a Master’s Degree in Political Science and a Master’s Degree in History. After teaching one year at Osborne High School, Tom completed his 40 years of teaching at Barton County Community College and Colby Community College, teaching History, Political Science and Sociology. During this tenure, he served on the Colby Community College Endowment Foundation Board, the Lecture Series Board, coached the Quiz Bowl Team and coached the women’s softball team.

Tom’s life passion was educating, encouraging and inspiring students to strive for and reach their goals. He never turned away a student who asked for help. He was a private person, very humble about his awards and achievements and had a quick wit and great sense of humor. While at CCC, he was awarded the Tangeman Award for Teaching Excellence and was recently inducted into their Hall of Fame. Upon retirement, Tom continued to teach online classes for various colleges and volunteered his time and effort to the FHSU library and the Oakley Area Chamber of Commerce.

Tom leaves behind many friends, students and his family: siblings, Joni (Dave) Chalfant, Hill City, KS, John (Elaine) Moorhous, Oakley, KS and Lori Thornburg, Dodge City, KS; nephew Morgan Chalfant; nieces, Jaclyn White, Shelly Bridges, Aubony Chalfant and Veronica Thornburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Annette Moorhous and grandparents, Clarence Ray and Bertha Moorhous and Francis and Mary Ann Robben.
