Sharnelle Singleterry

Sharnelle Singleterry, 43, RN at Wesley Medical Center, passed away on July 7 at Wesley Medical Center surrounded by her family and coworkers.

She was born in Wichita, KS on July 3, 1972 to Wesley Shannon and Carolyn Herrman. On December 23, 1992 she married Ronnie Singleterry in Jacksonville, Florida. Sharnelle was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and loved her family and spending time with them. Nursing was her passion and she was a very big part of the Comfort Care Carts to assist families at Wesley.

Sharnelle is survived by her husband, Ronnie; father, Wesley Shannon, stepmom Sherleen; children Daniel, Carolyn(Adam Bezdek), Gabrielle and Piper; siblings Eric Shannon, Stacy Frickey and Steven Shannon; grandchildren Cayden, Emmett and Harper; grandparents Paul Herrman and Vesta Shannon. She was preceded in death by her mother Carolyn Herrman, siblings Stephanie Shannon and Norman Joseph Shannon; and grandparents Angie Herrman, Ernest and Grace Shannon, Arhur “Bud” and Alverna Holopirek, and many other family and friends.

Rosary will be held on Friday, July 10 at 5:30 p.m. at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, 123 N. Andover Rd., Andover, KS with visitation after until 8 p.m. Funeral mass will be held on Saturday, July 11 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church with Father Kent Hemberger presiding. Interment will follow at Bruno township Cemetery, Andover.

Joel John Laas

Joel John Laas, age 93, died of natural causes in his home on July 6, 2015. Joel was born on August 27, 1921 in Trego County to Jacob and Mary (Schneider)Laas. Joel attended grade school in Utica, Kansas and high school in Ness City, Kansas. He enlisted in the Marines on February 2, 1942, where he met and married Helen J. Calhoun on March 20, 1946. Joel was discharged on February 8, 1946.

In 1973 he retired from the US Navy as a systems engineer and they made their home in Gardnerville, NV until her death on January 29, 2010. he returned to make his home in Ness City in 2012.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Mary Laas; brother, Samuel, Sigurd, Rudolph, Jakie, and Emil; his sisters Emma (Matkins) and Rebecca. He is survived by his sister, Mary Laas Bain of Ness City, numerous and beloved nephews and nieces and many great and great-great nephews and nieces.

Inurnment services will be held in the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Santa Nella, CA at a later date. Memorials may be made to the local Alzheimer’s Association in care of Fitzgerald Funeral Home, PO Box 96, Ness City, Kansas 67560.

Pollyanna O. Kerbs

Fremont, Nebraska — Pollyanna O. Kerbs, age 89, of Fremont, died Friday, July 3, 2015 at Nye Legacy.

She was born July 21,1925 in Kansas City, MO. to Paul F. and Julia (Newell) Ensign. She was a 1942 graduate of Otis High School, Otis, KS and a 1948 graduate of the University of Kansas Pharmacy School. She married Kenneth W. Kerbs, Sr. on August 11, 1962 in Wichita, KS. He died September 22, 2007.

She was a registered Pharmacist for 50 years beginning her career in small drugstores, later hospital pharmacy and retired from retail pharmacy with Safeway. She was a member of The Presbyterian Church in Fremont, the Hays Chapter Order of the Eastern Star and past president of the Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Kansas City, Kansas. The couple moved to Fremont in 1995. She loved reading, crochet, embroidery and visiting with family and friends.

Survivors include two daughters, Annette Alexa, Fremont, NE; Suzanne Johnson, Ft. Worth, TX; two sons, Kenneth W. Kerbs, Jr. (Bonnie), Colorado Springs, CO; James D Kerbs, Colorado Springs, CO; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by parents and husband.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 10, 2015 at Cline Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, KS 67601. Burial at Mt. Allen Cemetery, Hays, KS.

Visitation is from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Friday at the mortuary.

Robert Neil ‘Bob’ Ralston

Phillipsburg resident Robert Neil “Bob” Ralston passed away July 2, 2015 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege, NE at the age of 81. He was born March 31, 1934 in Harlan County, NE to Murrah & Blanche (Shaw) Ralston. He owned Ralston Construction for several years.

Survivors include his wife Donna of the home, 2 sons; Mark of Jupiter, FL & Craig of Phillipsburg, 2 daughters; Kim Baumann of Marquette, KS and Kathi Jurgens of Arvada, CO; 7 grandchildren & 3 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 9 at 10:30 a.m. in the Luctor Christian Reformed Church, with Pastors Aaron Rust & Joel Hiesterman officiating.

Visitation will be from 9:00 to 9:00 Wed. at the funeral home with the family receiving friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Edith Carrie “Louise” (McLeod) Barger passed away on July 1, 2015 in Shawnee. She was born on July 11, 1916 in Alma, Illinois, to Doctor Walter and Rev. Ruby McLeod. She married Russell L. Barger, her soulmate and love, on March 16, 1941. They enjoyed 43 years of marriage together, until Russell’s death on January 30, 1984. To this marriage, seven children were born.

Louise was a teacher in a one room school house for 2 years, and a Jr. High teacher for 3 years in Missouri before moving to WaKeeney. While living in WaKeeney, she worked at the hospital in the office, doing Medicare, Medicaid and Private Insurances for 23 years, until her retirement.

She was always very involved with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren’s activities such as church activities, boy and girl scouts, 4-H. She enjoyed working with people and was involved in the community. For Louise, life was an adventure to be lived at its fullness. She enjoyed writing letters and sending cards for holidays and birthdays to family and friends. She was inducted into the Lew Walter Chapter of the DAR on November 1, 2014 by her daughter-in-law, Patricia Barger. Louise had always been interested in her family history, and could talk for hours about the history which had been passed down to her from other family members. One of her greatest adventures was the trip with her son Mike, her daughter-in-law Patricia and niece Stephanie to England and Scotland. While there, she got to visit the McLeod Castle on the Isle of the Sky, and the church that her Burner ancestors had built in 1166.

Louise is survived by a son, Michael and wife Patricia of Albuquerque, New Mexico; four daughters, Patricia and husband Gary Folk of Mission, Betty Weatherhold of Emporia, Melody and husband Allen Gau of Roeland Park, and Holly and husband David Bittel of Ellis; eleven grandchildren, Stephanie, Glenn, Ricky, Cindy, Bobby, Tammy, Jackie, Michelle, Bill, Staci, and Dustin; twelve great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell; daughter, Russella “Rusty”; infant son, Rance; grandson, Shane; brothers, Eugene and Olin; sisters, Kay and Darlene; son-in-law, Douglas; and several brothers and sisters-in-law.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Monday, July 6, 2015 at the United Methodist Church of WaKeeney with Pastor Bob Clemence officiating. Burial will be in the WaKeeney City Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, and Monday from 12:30 to service time at the church.

Alvin H. Fisher, age 90, of Ellis, passed away Friday, July 3, 2015 at Via Christi Village, Hays. He was born November 10, 1924 in Antonino, Kansas to Zacheus and Monica (Rupp) Fisher. He married Anna Mary Pfeifer in Hays, Kansas on April 10, 1947. She preceded him in death on February 17, 2001.

He retired from Ellis County Road and Bridge Department as a maintainer operator. He also farmed and did custom cutting. Alvin enjoyed gardening, picking his black berries and spending time with family. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include three sons, Eugene and Beth Fisher of Hays, Raymond and Joleen Fisher of Hays and Paul and Danita Fisher of Ellis; four daughters, Mary Alice and Bernie Wiesner of  Mountain Home, Arkansas, Barbara Wolf of Hays, Virginia and Tony Erbert of McPherson and Colleen and Rodney King of Ellis; three brothers, Victor and Lillian Fisher, Francis and Josie Fisher and Cyril and Alice all of  Hays; two sisters, Georgina Jacobs of Gorham and Delores and Virgil Pfannenstiel of  Munjor; a sister-in-law, Diana Fisher of Hays as well as 15 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Peter Fisher; a brother, Ralph Fisher; two sisters, Agnes Waldschmidt and Rita Mae Giebler and a son-in-law, Don Wolf.

Funeral Mass will be 10 AM on Monday, July 6, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday 4 PM – 8 PM at Brock’s -Keithley Funeral Chapel & Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601 and Monday visitation will be at St. Mary’s Church at 9 AM until service time.

A Knights of Columbus rosary will be Sunday at 7 PM followed by a parish vigil at 7:30 PM

Lifelong Phillips County resident, Andrew C. Zillinger, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, KS at the age of 88.

He was born January 1, 1927 in Stuttgart, KS, the sixth of ten children born to Philip & Janie (Griffin) Zillinger. He was a farmer and rancher.

Survivors include his wife, Betty, of the home; two sons, Douglas of Logan, KS and Kerry of Columbus, KS; a daughter, Patsy Maddy of Norton, KS; 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; a sister, Marian King of Hays, KS; brother, Ray Zillinger of Phillipsburg, KS; and sister-in-law, Luella Zillinger, also of Phillipsburg.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastors Lee Bennight & Lorna Paulus officiating. Burial will follow in the Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Stuttgart.

Mr. Zillinger will lie in-state on Sunday, July 5, from noon – 9 p.m. and again Monday, July 6, from 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Larry E. Macy, age 67, died Monday, June 29, 2015, at the Trego County Long Term Care Center WaKeeney, Kansas.

He was born May 13, 1948, in Portis, Kansas to Gordon and Irene (Teselle) Macy. He married Kate (Strickert) Macy and they later divorced. He married Glenda Macy and they later divorced.

He was an over the road truck driver for many years. He was a US Army veteran and a Lifetime Member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was raised in Portis, Kansas and was a 1966 graduate of Portis High School. He lived in Scott City, Portis and moved to Victoria in 1999.

He has lived the last three and half years at the Trego County Long Term Care Center.

Survivors include one daughter, Amy Schaffer and husband, Greg, Hays, KS; one grandson, Jacob Schaffer; one step-daughter, Jo Renee Jurey, Colby, KS; one brother, Roger Macy and wife, Donna, Portis, KS; and former wife, Kate Macy, Scott City, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents and a former wife, Glenda Macy.

Graveside services are at 1:00 P.M. Friday, July 17, 2015, at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery at WaKeeney with Military Honors by the Hays V.F.W. Post No. 9076.

Marion F. Staab, 85, passed away Thursday, July 2, 2015 at Via Christi Village in Hays. He was born September 17, 1929 in Catharine, Kansas to Albert and Cherubim (Giebler) Staab. He married Patricia Giebler Leikam on May 10, 1969.

He was a farmer all his life and also worked in the oil fields in his younger years.  He was recognized with a number conservation awards for his farming practices and built a seasonal seedcleaning business. Over the years he was well known for his German butchering and “bratwurst”. He loved singing in the St. Catherine Church choir.

Survivors include his wife Patricia of the home, a son, Aaron Staab of Catharine, a step-daughter, Deborah (Leikam) Letourneau and husband Don of Portland, Oregon, step-sons Steve Leikam and wife Suzanne of Hays and Mike Leikam and wife Angela of Overland Park.  Four sisters, Mary Lang of Hays, Irma Staab of Catharine, Patty Staab of Russell, and Rose Ann Seader of Louisville, Colorado.  One grandchild, Makenzie Staab, six step-grandchildren, Matthew Leikam, Brianna (Letourneau) McCoy, Connor Letourneau, Alexis Leikam, Jacob Leikam and Corey Breit.

He was preceded in death by this parents, three brothers, Elmer Staab, Roland Staab and Irwin Staab, and one sister, Arlene Clyncke.

Funeral Mass will be 10 AM Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Catharine.
Burial will be in St. Catherine Cemetery, Catharine.

Virginnia Rose Barkdoll, age 72, passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at Greeley County Health Center in Tribune, Kansas. Virginnia was born January 22, 1943 at Weir, Kansas, the daughter of John & Ella Lee (Wallace) Aubert.

Delmas Dean “Jake” Jacobs, age 76, of Hays passed away June 29, 2015 at his home in Hays. He was born November 19, 1938 in Hays, KS to Andrew and Mary Jacobs. He graduated from Hays High in 1956. He married Dorothy Flax May 2, 1959 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays.

Jake was retired from the United States Postal Service. He was an avid golfer and designed the back 9 at the Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course. He also loved to fish and hunt, Create handmade brain game puzzles and was a “Jack” of all trades.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of hays; two sons, Tim Jacobs of Hays and Tom Jacobs and wife Mary of Hays; two daughters, JoAnn Moeller and husband Don of Parker, CO; Sharon Honeyman and husband Alan of Hays; three sisters, Norene Jacobs of Des Moines, IA, Shirley Millikin of Neosho, MO and Evelyn Bieker of Hays. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Darrell and Melvin Jacobs and a sister, Shelbia Huffhines.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. Private family burial at a later date in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday 5 PM – 8 PM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. A rosary service will be Thursday at 6:30 PM followed by a parish vigil service at 7 PM all at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Phillipsburg resident G. Pauline McKinley passed away Monday, June 29, 2015 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, KS at the age of 94.

She was born June 21, 1921 in Phillips County to Clyde & Lou Etta (Patterson) Pfost. Her husband, Russell McKinley, preceded her in death on Oct. 2, 2006.

Survivors include her son, Larry McKinley of Glade, KS; daughter, Karen Williams of Phillipsburg, KS; 4 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 6 step great-grandchildren, and 2 step great-great-granddaughters.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 3, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Rev. Lew Van Der Wege officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Mrs. McKinley will lie in-state on Wednesday, July 1, from noon – 9 p.m. and again Thursday from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
