Julius J. “Julie” Dreher, 89, Hays, died Thursday, October 30, 2014 at the Hays Medical Center.

He was born April 6, 1925 in Antonino, Kansas the son of Phillip and Mary (Herman) Dreher. On October 12, 1948 he married Catherine “Katie” D. Braun in Victoria, Kansas. She died November 5, 2001.

He was a body shop foreman for James Motor Company until his retirement.  He enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and his grandchildren, and playing golf, going to car races, and his blue Corvette. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

Survivors include his son Darrell Dreher and wife Gloria of Collinsville, OK, a daughter Sherry Dreher and Mike Velder of Larned, Kansas, three sisters, Dorothy Schmidt of Great Bend, Alice Orth of Hays, and Almita Augustine of Salina, five grandchildren Travis Dreher, Trevor Dreher, Amanda Randa, Erin Burrell, and Andrew Crispin, and six great grandchildren Aspen Dreher, Gage Dreher, Haven Olivia Dreher, Trip Burrell, Melody Burrell, and James Burrell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Catherine, a brother Celestine Dreher, and two sisters, Darlene Leiker and Thelma Karlin.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 3, 2014 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Street. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 pm on Sunday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Monday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine.  A parish vigil service will be at 6:30 pm on Sunday at the funeral home.

Estella Pauline Brening, 84, LaCrosse, died October 30, 2014 at Rush County Memorial Hospital.

She was born January 13, 1930 in Ellis County, Kansas the daughter of Alex and Pauline (Graf) Munsch. On June 14, 1949 she married Dean Brening in LaCrosse. He died November 18, 1987.  She was a homemaker, a babysitter, and did cleaning at the Hadley Motel. She was a member of St Michael’s Catholic Church in LaCrosse. She enjoyed cooking, board games, hard work, and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Survivors include a son, Phillip Brening and wife Charlotte of Ft. Worth, TX, a daughter, Nita Sellens of Topeka, KS, two sisters, Theresa Basgall and Fritzi Weigand, three grandsons, Matt Sellens, Mike Brening and wife Camille, and Nick Brening and wife Heather, four great grandchildren, Owen, Olivia, Saylor, and Cross Brening.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son and daughter, and numerous brothers and sisters and half- brothers and half-sisters.

Funeral services will be at 12:00 noon on Saturday, November 1, 2014, at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine.  Burial will be in the LaCrosse City Cemetery. Margaret Lucille Powers

Margaret Lucille Powers, 94, of Grainfield, died Wednesday, October 29, 2014. She was born October 18, 1920, in rural Park, KS to Nick and Marie Eva (Hartman) Malsom. She graduated from Gove Rural High School. She served in the Waves during WWII and was honorably discharged. On June 6, 1946 Margaret married Robert M. Powers. Margaret and Robert farmed west of Gove for nearly 40 years before retiring to Grainfield in 1983 and she later moved to the GCMC apartments. She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, Hackberry Hoppers and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert, May 5, 1997; son, Douglas, Jan. 31, 1982; daughter-in-law, Kathy Powers; sisters, Catherine Clay, Lena Marshall, Theresa Nance and Elizabeth Ann Malsom; brothers, Phillip Malsom and Joseph Malsom.

Margaret is survived by her sons, Lonnie Powers of Maricopa, AZ and Eugene (Carol) Powers of Paola, KS; brother, Frank (Dorothy) Malsom of Wellington, KS; grandchildren, Justin Powers of Columbia, MO, Chance (Bok) Powers of Olathe, KS, Kerry (John) Cowart of Hoboken, NJ and Karisa (Floyd) Truetken of Roswell, NM; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Ethan and Katherine Truetken of Roswell, NM.

Visitation will be 5:30- 7:00 p.m. Sunday, November 2, 2014 at Baalmann Mortuary, Oakley. Funeral Mass will be 11:30 a.m. Monday, October 3, 2014 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Grainfield. Edna Mae Coseo

Edna Mae Coseo, 83, of Loveland, passed away peacefully with all of her family at her side at Pathways Hospice, Mckee Medical Center on October 28, 2014.

She was born in Sterling, Colorado to Bonaventure and Regina (Scheck) Geist. Edna was one of six children in the family. The family later moved to Victoria, Kansas and then to Loveland in 1941.  She graduated from Loveland High School in 1949 and shortly after enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps.  Edna did her basic training in Virginia and then went to Camp Gordon in Augusta, GA for Cryptography School. She then became a cryptography instructor at Ft. Monmouth, Ocean Port, New Jersey. She then asked to be transferred and chose Tokyo, Japan for her next assignment. Edna arrived there on Christmas day 1950.  That is where she met the love of her life, Donald Coseo.  They began dating in 1951 and then were married in Tokyo on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, 1953. While in Tokyo, they both obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant. They left Japan after their tour of duty in 1954 and returned to Donald’s home state of Connecticut where they lived for 6 years before moving to Loveland in 1961.

Donald started his plumbing business and Edna was a homemaker and worked part time at her family business, Loveland Realty. She later worked for Johnson Publishing and most recently part time for the Hearing Center.  Edna was known for her kindness, beautiful smile, and being a caring and compassionate person. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends and all who knew her.  Edna loved fishing, hunting, camping, reading, making blankets and quilts, but most of all, spending time with her family. Edna was preceded in death by both her parents and her brothers, Pete, Alvin, Ernie and sisters, Shirley and Lillian. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Donald, sons, Steven (Gladys) of Berthoud, and Thomas (Amy) of Loveland, and daughter, Donna Coseo of Loveland, 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, November 3rd, 2014 at the First Christian Church, located at 2000 N. Lincoln Ave. in Loveland.

In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to the Edna Coseo Library Fund in care of Kibbey Fishburn Funeral Home, with all proceeds going to the Loveland Public Library.

Patricia Ann Ruff

Rural Logan, KS resident Patricia Ann Ruff passed away Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the Logan Manor Nursing Home in Logan at the age of 68. She was the curator at the Logan Area Historical Museum in Logan.

She was born June 27, 1946 in Perth Amboy, NJ the daughter of William James & Helen Faye (Tripp) Grant.

She was united in marriage to John Ruff on January 26, 1966 in Hays, KS. He survives.

Other survivors include his daughter, Pamela & husband, Kevin and a son, Jason, all of Independence, MO; and 2 brothers, Jim Grant of Nashville, TN and John Grant of Olathe, KS.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 29, 2014 in the Logan Funeral Home in Logan, with Pastor Joel Hiesterman officiating. Burial will follow in the Prairie Dale Cemetery in Graham County, KS.

Mrs. Ruff will lie in state from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday with the family gathering for visitation from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday evening all in the Logan Funeral Home.

Elene Marie Moden

Elene Marie Moden was born August 27,1917 to Ethel Jennie (Carpenter) and Walter Lawrence Moden on the family farm northwest of WaKeeney in Trego County. She passed away on October 24, 2014 at the Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital at the age of 97 years.

Elene graduated from Trego Community High School in 1934 and then began work in the new school library. In 1937, she attended summer school at the University of Colorado in Boulder studying English and Librarianship for Educators. She worked in the library for 5 ½ years until she became engaged to marry. Rules at that time did not allow married women to work so she was forced to resign.

On October 14, 1939, she was united in marriage to William Wagner, a young lawyer who had joined his father’s law firm. To this union, 2 children were born, Linda Elene and Ross Wilson.

Elene was active in the Presbyterian Church, the Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was a charter member of the WaKeeney Literary Club. She was a 55 year member of Chapter CT, P.E.O. She enjoyed bridge, sewing, golf and quilting. Her flower garden with many iris that had been her mother’s, were her pride and joy.

Elene’s interest in family history became a passion for genealogy. She traveled to meet distant relatives, explore cemeteries and went to the Mormon Archives to collect family information. She wrote and published 2 books on her family heritage and a book on the Wagner family heritage. With her passion for history, she also served as the historian for her church and the many other organizations she belonged to.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Steinle and husband Dave of Georgetown, TX; a son Ross Wagner and wife Diane of WaKeeney, KS; 7 grandchildren: Shawn Mahoney and husband Pat of Overland Park, KS; Shannon Bruggen and husband Joel of Winston-Salem, NC; Erin Woodall and husband Rich of Overland Park, KS; Lindsey Wagner and Heath Markham of Topeka, KS; Talle Dykema of Collyer, KS; Eric Riedel and wife Dane of Hesperia, CA; Jennifer Ganesh and husband Kris of Atlanta, GA and 18 great grandchildren.

Elene was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill, sisters Vera Cooper and Mija Rorabaugh and brothers John, Walter and Ernie Moden.

Services will be on Monday October 27 at 1:30 PM at the Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 N 12th, WaKeeney, KS. Burial will be in the WaKeeney City Cemetery.

Marion Joseph Bollig Sr.

Marion Joseph Bollig Sr., age 83, Hays, Kan., beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend was surrounded by family as he went to be with his creator, the Lord on October 23, 2014, one day before his birthday, at his home.

Marion was born October 24, 1930 in Hays to Frank and Mary (Basgall) Bollig, and graduated from Hays High School in 1948. In 1957 he married Shirley Dreiling in Hays at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She survives of the home. They celebrated their 57th anniversary last month.

They began and spent their entire life in Hays, joined by five children who are the loves of their life. Survivors include daughters Coleen Starling (Berry), Raleigh, N.C., and Camille Ellard, Hays; and sons Marion Joseph, Jr. (Linda), Baldwin; Jeff (Laurie), Overland Park, Kan.; and John, Hays. Marion and Shirley have nine grandchildren including Dane Schuckman, Spencer Schuckman, Stuart Schuckman, and Chelsea Jones, all of Raleigh, N.C.; Anna Bollig and Thomas Bollig, Baldwin; Kyle Bollig and Courtney Bollig, Overland Park; and Carrie Ellard of London, England, Cheyenne Ellard and Kirsten Ellard, Hays. They have a great-granddaughter Charlie Jones and a great-grandson Cooper Schuckman, Raleigh, N.C.

Marion was loyal and dedicated to his country, achieving the rank of Sergeant during the Korean Conflict and later serving in the National Guard. While in the Army, he participated in swimming and diving competitions, a talent first perfected at Massey Playground in Hays. Marion and his family loved spending time together, including camping and boating at Cedar Bluff Reservoir and Wilson Lake; and travelling across the country in their Winnebago. Colorado in the summertime was a favorite of the family, with stops at National Forests in every region of the state.

He was a life-long member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, served on the Parish Council and as a lector, was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1325, a 4th Degree Member of the Bishop Cunningham Knights of Columbus, and a member of the parish’s cleaning group known as the “heavenly dusters.” He was also a member of the American Legion Post #173 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9076. He was an avid sports fan and helped coached little league baseball and football. He had many interests including autos, western-themed television shows, sports of any kind (especially those involving the Kansas Jayhawks) and artistry in all mediums. He loved to watch television with a big wooden bowl of popcorn cradled in his arm.

Marion worked for the same employer his entire life, beginning as a driver/gauger under the name of H.M. Popp Oil Company and later as a manager for the company when it was sold to Permian Oil Corporation, a division of Occidental Petroleum Company.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, five brothers Robert, Elmer, John, Frank and Cecil; and seven sisters Delores (who died as an infant), Marcella McCullom, Helen Knowles, Frances Wooldridge, Margaret Hazelton and Clara Walters. Surviving in-laws include a Doug Hazelton (Margie), Lake Havasu, Ariz.; and Norma (Elmer) Bollig, Hays; and countless nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial with military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 and the American Legion Post #173 will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 pm on Tuesday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Wednesday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street. A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 6:00, a parish vigil service will be at 6:30, followed by a combined Third degree St. Joseph Council #1325 and Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00 pm, all on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mary Jane Lang, 73, Hays, died Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at her home in Hays.

She was born January 16, 1941, on the family farm south of Zurich, Kansas, the daughter of Robert and Violet (Hinkhouse) Johnson. On June 27, 1967, she married Victor P. Lang Jr. in Plainville. They later divorced.

She was a CNA and also a para professional at Tiger Tots and O’Loughlin Elementary School.  She was a graduate of Palco High School, and a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. She was a huge fan of Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos, enjoyed watching NASCAR and soap operas, and spending time with her grandchildren and family.

Survivors include two sons, David Lang and wife Rhonda of Lansing, KS, and Tom Lang of Hays, a daughter Dana Timmons and husband Bruce of St. Francis, KS, a brother Russell Johnson and wife Evelyn of Fort Dodge, Iowa, three sisters, Connie Ferland and husband Levi of Wichita, Shirley Westhusin of Plainville, and Joyce Waldschmidt of Hays, and five grandchildren, Brittney Lang and Taylor Lang of Lansing, KS, Darris Keller of Hays, Casey Keller of Manhattan, and Connor Keller of St. Francis, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers-in-law Ronnie Westhusin and Arnold Waldschmidt.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. Cremation will follow the services. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 pm on Friday and from 9:00 am until service time on Saturday, all at the funeral home. A parish vigil service and rosary will be at 6:00 pm on Friday at the funeral home.

Dave Davis

Former Phillips County resident Dave Davis passed away Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014, at Hays Medical Center at the age of 48.

He was born October 15, 1966, in Broken Bow, NE to Kenneth & Donna (Schulte) Davis. His parents, Donna, of Manhattan, KS and Kenneth, of Grand Junction, CO, both survive.

Other survivors include his grandmother, Eugenia Schulte of Omaha, NE; guardians Kenneth & Diane Stockman of Kirwin, KS; brothers, Daryl Davis and Dana Davis, both of Grand Junction, CO, and Doug Davis of Kensington, KS; and sisters, Shelley Davis of Aurora, CO, Jamie Opat of Wichita, KS and Melissa Johnson of Kirwin, KS.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 25, at 2:00 p.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Joel Hiesterman officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery, Phillips County.

The casket will remain closed.  Friends may sign the book Thursday from 5 – 9 p.m. and again Friday from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Kirwin resident LeRoy Eller passed away at the Phillips County Hospital, Monday, October 20, 2014, at the age of 82.

He was born July 1, 1932, the son of Derwin and Thelma (Hand) Eller. LeRoy worked as a mechanic for a trucking company.

His son, Glenn and daughter, Susan Eller, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Helen, of the home in Kirwin; son, Willie Eller and daughter, Donita Winters, both of Phillipsburg; a brother, Dutch Eller of Gaylord; 2 sisters, Val Redinger of Cawker City, KS and Donna Eskew of Oklahoma City, OK; 8 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 24, 2014 in the Nazarene Church in Gaylord, KS, with Pastors Keith Sears and Brian Loreg officiating. Burial will follow in the Gaylord Cemetery.
LeRoy will lie in state from noon until 9 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Mary Joan Dinkel, 73, of Grainfield, died Monday, October 20, 2014. She was born September 22, 1941 in Colfax, IA to Paul and Lillian Yoakum. She was a cook at USD 292. She loved the kids and really enjoyed cooking for them. Joan also loved playing jokes. She married LeRoy Dinkel on October 24, 1992.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Dan Kennedy and brother, Gene Yoakum.

She is survived by her husband LeRoy Dinkel, Grainfield; children Dwight (Barb) Kennedy, Prairie City, IA, DeWayne (Twila) Kennedy, Knoxville, IA, Darcy Kennedy, Knoxville, IA and Douglas (Sherry) Kennedy, Branson, MO; step-children, John (Laura) Dinkel, Austin, TX, Vicki (Joel) Jarnagin, Parsons, KS, Jim (Cindy) Dinkel, Las Vegas, NV, Brad Dinkel, Austin, TX and Scott (April) Dinkel, Lincoln, NE; 22 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

Cremation was chosen. Family will receive friends from 5-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at Baalmann Mortuary, Oakley. Graveside service will take place at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at the Grainfield Cemetery, Grainfield, KS.
