Emily Ann Gilbert

Phillipsburg resident Emily Ann Gilbert passed away January 12, 2014, at the Logan Manor Nursing Home in Logan at the age of 88.  She was born May 18, 1925, in Atwood, KS, the daughter of Frank and Hattie (Urban) Dozbaba.

Survivors include her daughter, Janelle Kempt of Phillipsburg, eight grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be held Friday, Jan. 24th at 10:00 a.m. in the SS Philip & James Catholic Church with Fr. George Chalbhagam officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. in the St. Cyril Cemetery, north of Atwood.

Memorials have been established to Hospice Services or the Logan Manor.

Friends may sign the book from 9:00 to 9:00 Thursday at the funeral home.

Larry Leslie Burns

Phillipsburg resident Larry Leslie Burns, 77, died Monday, January 13, 2014, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Neb.

Larry was born October 6, 1936, in Reamsville, KS, the son of Leslie & Julia (Ernst) Burns. He retired as Head Serviceman from KN Energy.

Survivors include two sons, Kent “Joe” and wife, Beth and Blake and wife, Lorri, all of Kensington, KS and daughter, Lara Jansonius and husband, Glenn of Phillipsburg; brother Lee Burns of Sioux City, SD; 7 grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild.

Preceding him in death was his parents; a brother, Harold; sister, Violet Burns; a son, Shane Burns; and grandson, Maleki Shane Jansonius.

Cremation was planned. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, January 18, 2014, in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Joel Hiesterman officiating.

Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to service time Saturday at the funeral home.

Eugene Sansom

LOGAN — Edmond resident Eugene Sansom died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, at Logan Manor in Logan at the age of 84. He was a farmer.

Eugene was born May 5, 1929, in Edmond, the son of Clyde and Carrie (Patterson) Sansom.

He was united in marriage to Miriam J. Paulsen on July 15, 1951, in Phillipsburg. She survives.
Other survivors include a son, Rodney of Densmore; three daughters, Linda Becker of Lenora, Pat Smith of Logan and Pam Glick of Superior, Colo.; a sister, Lois Archer of Logan; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Alta Griffin; and a granddaughter, Carrie Sansom.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the former Edmond United Methodist Church in Edmond with Pastor Lynn Linde officiating. Burial will follow in the Edmond Cemetery, Edmond.

Mr. Sansom will lie in state from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Logan Funeral Home in Logan.

Betty Haskett

Phillipsburg resident Betty Haskett, age 76, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, at Deseret Nursing Home, Kensington.

Betty was born July 17, 1937, in Phillips County, the daughter of Erl Eli and Theresa Pauline (Schulke) Haskett.  She worked as a bank teller for many years.

Survivors include two sisters, Noma Keesee and Bernice Werner, both of Phillipsburg, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 Second St., Phillipsburg, with Tony Keesee officiating.  Burial will follow in the Agra Cemetery, Agra.

Miss Haskett will lie in state from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday and until service time Saturday at the funeral chapel.

Lawrence Archie Reynolds, Jr.

Lawrence ReynoldsLawrence “Baby Ray” Reynolds, Jr., 72, Hays, died Friday, December 20, 2013 at his home in Hays.

He was born May 29, 1941 in Manhattan, Kansas the son of Lawrence and Harriet (White) Reynolds, Sr. and Ernestine Moore.  He served his country with the United States Marine Corps.  He was a graduate of FHSU with a degree in fine arts.  He was an upholsterer, an artist, and worked as a janitor at FHSU for 25 years.  He was a member of the Westview Church in Hays, had his artwork displayed at the Grassroots Center in Lucas, Kansas, was a Salvation Army Officer, was a pastor in various nursing homes, and loved art, racquetball, movies, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons, Lawrence “Larry” Reynolds of Agoura Hills, CA, and Gerald Reynolds, four daughters, Renea Griffin of Marietta, GA, Jessica McGuire and husband Jeremy, Veronica Johnson and husband Stuart, and Vanessa Dinkel and husband Shon, all of Hays, brothers, James Moore of Wichita, KS, Alfonso Reynolds of St. Louis, MO, and a sister Shirlese Hamer of Los Angeles, CA, grandchildren, Brandon Reynolds, LaQuinda Reynolds, Anthony Griffin, Brian Reynolds, Cameron Griffin, Tiffany Reynolds, Jacob Griffin, Matthew Reynolds, John Reynolds, Hannah McGuire, Gabriel McGuire, Eliana McGuire, Abigail Johnson, Katelyn Johnson, Caleb Johnson, Lily Johnson, Aaliyah Reynolds, Davian Swanson, Rylan Dinkel, Tayvin Dinkel, Keaton Dinkel, Camden Dinkel, and two great grandchildren, Chloe Griffin and Jericho Griffin and special friends Harold and JoAnne Crispin.

He was preceded in death by siblings, Betty Sloan, DeMille Reynolds, Michael Reynolds, Bennie Jackson, and Marjorie Smith and a grandchild Asher McGuire.

Gradda Tien

Phillipsburg resident, Gradda Tien, passed away Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg at the age of 106 years. She was born June 7, 1907 in Prairie View, KS the daughter of John & Hattie (Schemper) Velhuizen. She was a homemaker.

She was united in marriage to Garrit Tien on February 2, 1927 in Tracy, Iowa.  He preceded her in death on April 21, 1971.

Survivors include 7 children, Henrietta Van Kooten of Long Island, KS, Marie Bousema of Worthington, MN, Dorothy Huyser and husband Gerald of Des Moines, IA, Arlo Gale Tien and wife Carolyn of Prairie View, KS, Edward Tien and wife Barb of Phillipsburg, KS, Rosalee Verhoef of Artesia, CA, and Carmen Van Beek of Boyden, IA; a brother Dale Veldhuizen of Oskaloosa, IA, one sister Veda Bousema of Sanborn, IA.; 27 grandchildren, 72 great-grandchildren, and 52 great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 26, 2013 in the Luctor Christian Reformed Church, Phillips County, KS, with Gale Tien officiating.  Burial will follow in the Luctor Cemetery, Phillips County.

Helen R. Weilert, 91, Hays, died Sunday, December 15, 2013, at her daughter’s house in Omaha, Neb.
She was born April 28, 1922 in Leavenworth, Kansas the daughter of Peter and Frances Grace Christy.  On January 17, 1945, she married Lawrence J. Weilert Sr. in Hays.  He died May 16, 2002.

Phillipsburg resident, Donald C. McCall, passed away Monday, November 18 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE at the age of 87. He was born on August 26, 1926, the son of Henry & Emma Jane (Vanderlip) McCall.

Survivors include his wife Joan of the home; his son Kent of Phillipsburg; 2 daughters, Cynthia McCall of Overland Park, KS & Linnette McCall of Kansas City, MO; his brother, Robert of Woodston & one grandson.

Funeral services will be held Sat. November 23 at 10:30 a.m. in the United Presbyterian Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Chris Davis officiating. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the Mt. Herman Cemetery, Paradise, KS.

Phillipsburg resident, Patricia “Patt” Felts, passed away Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, KS at the age of 79.  She was born July 12, 1934 in Hays, KS to Linus & Florence (Rupp) Basgall.  Patt worked as a clerk at Rankin Drug in Phillipsburg for many years.

She is survived by her husband, Tad, of Phillipsburg; sons, Gregg, of Houston, TX and Marc of Junction City, KS; and three grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, Nov. 15, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the SS Philip & James Catholic Church, Phillipsburg, with Fathers George Chalbhagam and Charles Steier officiating.  Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Visitation will be Wed. from noon – 9 p.m. and Thurs. from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg. There will be a Rosary service Thursday evening, Nov. 14, at 6:30 p.m.in the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. afterwards.

Hays, Kansas – Leo J. Wellbrock – age 80, died Tuesday, November 5,
2013, at his home in Hays, Kansas.
He was born August 31, 1933, in Catherine, Kansas, to Louis and Louise
(Leikam) Wellbrock. He married Kay (Hatfield) on August 16, 1952, in
Wichita, Kansas.
He worked for the City of Hays as the Director of Public Works for 42
years. He was a 1952 graduate of St. Joseph Military School and a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church both of Hays, Kansas. He
enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, golfing, spending time with his family
and the grandchildren’s sports.
Survivors include his wife, Kay Wellbrock, of the home; one son, Steve
Wellbrock and wife, Jolene, Hays, KS; four daughters, Pam Whitham and
husband, David, Broken Arrow, OK; Kelly Heifner and husband, Jim, Sandy
Seems, and Tina Dix and husband, Doug, all of Hays, KS; one brother,
Richard “Dick” Wellbrock and wife, Kim, Hays, KS; one sister, Mary

Eli Lowry

Prairie View resident, Eli Lowry, passed away Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, KS at the age of 15.  He was born in Tampa, FL on Dec. 2, 1997 to Calvin & Diane (Breathouwer) Lowry.  Eli was a sophomore at Northern Valley High School.

His mother, Diane, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his parents, Calvin & Emily Lowry, of Prairie View; brothers, Damian Wellmen and Caden Lowry and sisters, Talia Lowry and Kim Lowry, all of Prairie View; grandparents, Barb & Gayle Christensen of Elbert, CO; LuAnn & Trey Alderson of Indiahoma, OK; and Melvin Breathouwer of Long Island, KS.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Nov. 8, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the Northern Valley High School gymnasium in Almena, KS with Pastors Kirk Kasson and Paul VanderVeer officiating. Private inurnment will be in the Norton Cemetery, Norton, KS.
