Wilfred A. “Willie” Pfeifer
Victoria, Kansas – Wilfred A. “Willie” Pfeifer, age 92, died
Saturday,
September 28, 2013, on the farm in his home at Victoria, Kansas.
He was born November 18, 1920, in Victoria, Kansas, to Anthony J.
and
Rosa (Dreiling) Pfeifer. He married Bertha (Walter) on September 30,
1946,
in Catherine, Kansas. She died January 20, 2010.
He was a farmer and a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church and
served
on the church committee, Victoria, Kansas. He collected and restored
Minneapolis-Moline tractors and competed in “tractor pulls”. He was past
president and board member of the Victoria-Gorham Coop. In the 1970’s he
won the Bankers Award for Ellis County Soil Conservation District. He
enjoyed the farm and his family.
Survivors include his, two sons, Kenneth Pfeifer and wife, Diane,
Victoria, KS; Steve Pfeifer and wife, Mary, Victoria, KS; two daughters,
Janice Pfannenstiel and husband Jerry, Munjor, KS; Shirley Pfeifer, Hays,

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three brothers,

two infant brothers, Anthony and Alfred; and one grandson-in-law, Gary
Erickson.
Services are 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at St. Fidelis
Catholic Church, Victoria, Kansas. Burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery,
Victoria, Kansas.
A vigil service is at 6:30 P.M. Tuesday, at Cline’s Mortuary, 412

Irving L. Smith
Logan resident, Irving L. Smith, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013 at his home at the age of 80.
He was born in Norton, KS on March 23, 1933 to Amon & Averille (Loughey) Smith. Irving was a farmer.
Two grandsons, Jason Largent and Matthew New, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Mary, of the home in Logan; daughters, Debbie New of Lansing, KS and Gwen Largent of Almena, KS; son, Tim Smith of Scranton, KS; sister, Carol Wyatt of Norton, KS; 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, at 2:00 p.m. in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Logan, with military honors by the U. S. Navy.

Alberta “Bertie” Chestnut,
Former area resident, Alberta “Bertie” Chestnut, passed away Tues., Sept. 17, 2013 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, KS at the age of 73.
She was born Oct. 23, 1939 to Carl & Elizabeth (Hubert) Trarbach. Her daughter, Melody, preceded her in death on Oct. 11, 1981.
Survivors include her son, Pat Chestnut of Hays; daughters, Mickie Dreiling, Melinda Chestnut and Melissa Leiker, all of Hays; sisters Doris Lovelady of Hill City, KS and Betty Lampkin of Indianapolis, IN; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 20, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Joel Hiesterman officiating. Burial will follow in the Marvin Cemetery, Glade, KS.
Visitation will be Wed. from 5 – 9 p.m. and Thurs. from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the funeral home, with the family receiving friends Thursday evening from 7 – 8 p.m.

Local area resident, Gary E. Johnson, passed away Monday, Sept. 16, 2013 at the Deseret Nursing Home in Kensington, KS at the age of 70.
Gary was born May 8, 1943 in Denver, CO, the son of Jerry & Catherine (Olson) Misner. His wife, Shirley, preceded him in death in 1998.
Survivors include a brother, Eric Johnson, of Denver, CO; a sister, Gail Artz, of Kensington, KS; and several nieces & nephews, including Deb Watt and Bob Artz, both of Phillipsburg, KS.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, Sept. 19, at 1:00 p.m. in the Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, CO.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 – 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg, KS.

Ruth King Boyer
Ruth King Boyer, 96, Hays, died Friday, September 6, 2013 at the Trego-Lemke Memorial Hospital in Wakeeney, Kansas.
She was born September 14, 1916 in Hays, Kansas the daughter of George King and Pearl (Reed) King. She is survived by a son Brad, Hays, Kansas, and a niece Val King, Denver, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Paul William King, and her husband Jay Clair Boyer.
Ruth graduated from Lincoln Elementary School; Hays High School; and Fort
Hays State College with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1940. She had a
lifetime teaching certification and taught briefly in the Hoisington School System.
While at Fort Hays State College Ruth lettered in Women’s Field Hockey
becoming an early woman member of the FHSC “K” Club.
Ruth married Jay Boyer on May 10th 1941. During the Second World War they
lived in Wichita, Kansas, while Jay was a supervisor at Boeing doing inspections
and certifications on bombers. After a brief move to Estes Park, Colorado, they
returned to Hays in 1947 where Jay became a field tester for Haliburton
Corporation. In 1957, they formed Brad Oil Tools Corporation.
Ruth was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution; Eastern Star; Fort
Hays State Half Century Club Board and the Ellis County Historical Society.
Athlete, teacher, wife, mother and history buff. A source of strength, support,
compassion, love, and funny jokes. She had a deep appreciation of the history of
Hays and her many stories entertained all she met.
Memorial services will be at 1:00 pm on Friday, September 20, 2013 at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. The family will receive friends from 12:30 pm until service time. George William Schippers
George William Schippers, 84, Hays, beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at the Via Christi Villages, Hays.
He was born December 14, 1928 in Victoria, Kansas the son of John M. and Anna C. (Kippes) Schippers. In 1947, George convinced a city girl to move to a rural area to be his wife. On February 9, 1948 he married Lillian Marie Dome in Hays. They began their life together on the family farm near Grainfield, Kansas and twelve children were born to this union. They lived in Grainfield from 1948 until 1995, when they moved to Hays. Lillian died November 8, 2005. He was a farmer and a member of the St. Joseph Church, Hays, a former member of the St. Agnes Church in Grainfield, was a member of the 3rd degree St. Agnes Council Knights of Columbus, was a Hoxie Elk’s Lodge member, and was a past school board member of USD #412. He enjoyed playing Pinochle, Bingo, and enjoyed dancing and going to dances with his wife, Lillian. George loved family and willingly followed the many activities of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include ten children, Linda Nicholas (Frank) of Waco, TX, Diane Seiler (Leroy) of Medicine Lodge, KS, Janet Patterson (John) of Pittsburg, KS, Mary William (Dan) and Carol Campbell (Max) both of Hoxie, KS, George Schippers, Jr. of Colby, KS, David (Stephanie) Schippers of Hoxie, KS, Charlie (Joan) Schippers of Hays, KS, Karen Cudney (Brian) of Wichita, KS, and Jeff (Janice) Schippers of Broken Arrow, OK, thirty eight grandchildren and fifty nine great grandchildren. He is also survived by a daughter in law Khyleen Schwarzenberger of Wichita, KS, four sisters, Sr. Mary Ann Schippers of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, Lucy Baier (Paul) of Hays, Estella Kuhn of Victoria, and Lillian Leiker of Hays, three brothers, Lawrence (JoAnn) Schippers of Springfield, MO, Paul Schippers of Victoria, KS, and Norman (Lila) Schippers of The Woodlands, TX, sisters in law Armella Schippers of Olathe, KS, Marietta Lies of Wichita, KS, Stella Ekovich of Sarasota, FL and Alexia Corbitt of Sharpsburg, NC, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, two sons, Daniel Joseph Schippers in November of 1948 and Mark Schippers in April 1993, an infant grandson John Dale Patterson II, brothers Herman Schippers, John F. Schippers, and Arthur Schippers, brothers in law, Frank Kuhn and Maurice Leiker, and sisters in law, Loretta Schippers and Theresa Schippers.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 4:00 until 8:00 pm and on Saturday from 9:00 am until 10:45, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. Frances J. Rupp
Frances J. Rupp, 86, Hays, died Saturday, August 31, 2013 at the Via Christi Villages, Hays.
She was born August 21, 1927 in Catherine, Kansas the daughter of Otto and Mathilda (Schmidt) Hammerschmidt. On November 6, 1948 she married Alois H. Rupp in Catherine. He died January 23, 1989. She was a homemaker and mother and a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the Daughters of Isabella, the Eucharistic Perpetual Adorers, an Associate with the Sisters of St. Agnes, and was a Minister of Praise. She served with the Immaculate Heart of Mary Liturgy Commission for twenty years, the RCIA program for six years, was a Eucharistic Minister and Minister to the homebound for 24 years and was a church sacristan for 24 years.
Survivors include three sons, Rick Rupp and wife Judy of Victoria, Kansas, Neal Rupp and wife Mary Sue of Eldorado, KS, and Kim Rupp and wife Deana of Hays, KS, one daughter Jackie Windholz and husband Otto of Houston, TX, a sisters in law, Alfreda Hammerschmidt, Anita Leiker, and Mary Ann Leiker, grandchildren Heather Rupp, Holly Rupp, Heidi Rupp, Amanda Seyfert and husband Casey, Jesse Rupp and wife Bonnie, Travis Windholz and wife Jennifer, Lyndsie Windholz, Jamie Klug and husband Darren, Dustin Rupp, Jordan Rupp, Taryn Rupp, and Bryson Rupp, seven great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son Bill Rupp, two brothers Adolph and Clem Hammerschmidt and an infant sister Mary Hammerschmidt, a grandson Mitch Rupp, and a sister in law Bernita Hammerschmidt, sister in law Betty Struble, and brothers in law Charles Leiker and Jack Struble.

Iva Jarvis
Rural Phillipsburg resident, Iva Jarvis, passed away Monday, August 26, 2013 at the Colonial Villa in Alma, Nebraska at the age of 87. She was a farmers wife and an inductee into the Trapshooting Hall of Fame.
She was united in marriage to Rex E. Jarvis on August 28, 1956 in Reno, Nevada. He preceded her in death in 2005.
Survivors include her two daughters, Ellen Runnion and Juania Gale, both of Phillipsburg; 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 30, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Chaplain Linda Knipping officiating.
Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.
Mrs. Jarvis will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday in the funeral home with the family receiving friends for visitation Thursday evening from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m..

Rosaline “Rose” (Hoffman) Clark
Rosaline “Rose” Clark, 78, Hays, died August 25, 2013 at the Hays Medical Center.
She was born May 2, 1935 in Hays the daughter of Nick and Odelia “Tillie” (Dreiling) Hoffman. She married Gerald Gottschalk on May 7, 1955 and he preceded her in death March 5, 1975. She later married Keith Clark. She worked at First National Bank, which later became Emprise Bank for 45 years, retiring as the Vice President of Emprise Bank. She was a graduate of Girl’s Catholic High School in 1953, was a member of the St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, was very active in the TMP-Marian Alumni Association, enjoyed spending time with her quilt club and making quilts, loved to cook for her family, donated many quilts to the Humane Society of the High Plains, and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and many other friends and family.
Survivors include her husband, of the home in Hays, a son Mike Gottschalk and wife Lori of Hays, daughters Debbie Howard and husband Gary and Sue Gottschalk, all of Hays, a step son Cam Clark and wife Esther of Wichita, step daughters Crista Dorsey and husband Floyd of Emporia, Jan Miller and husband Mike of Kansas City, and Stacy Driver and husband Kenton of Salina, Kansas, two grandchildren Rachel Gottschalk of Milwaukee, WI and Cole Gottschalk of Hays, eleven step grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren, three sisters, Rita Gottschalk and husband LeRoy of Hays, Marjorie Schumacher of Hays, and Pauline Moore of Overland Park, Kansas, a sister in law Jane Meyer of Wichita, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Nicholas Hoffman, Jr. a brother in law Gary Moore, and a great nephew Kaden Gottschalk.

Phillipsburg resident, Marcia G. Paulsen, passed away Wed. Aug 21 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg at the age of 64. She was born October 18, 1948 in Riverside, CA, the daughter of Merle & Geraldine (Hopson) Francis. She was a customer service representative at the First National Bank & Trust, Phillipsburg.

Rural Phillipsburg resident, Karen Jean Bach, passed away Monday, August 19, 2013 at her home near Woodruff, KS at the age of 70. She was born in Oxford, NE on May 30, 1943 to Gene & Eileen (Welden) Covey. She was a homemaker, mother and nurse’s aide.
Survivors include her husband, Leland; three sons, Anthony of Phillipsburg; Stuart of Meridian, KS; and Jason of Alma, NE; sister, Connie Miller of Kansas City, MO; 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Friday, August 23, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. in the Peace Lutheran Church, Alma, NE, with Pastor Paul Ferrarone officiating. Private inurnment will be in the Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Stuttgart, KS.

Hays, Kansas – Doris M. (Janne) Rohr, age 89, died Sunday, August 4, 2013, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.
She was born February 7, 1924, on the family farm near Wilson, Kansas, to William and Anna (Kunz) Janne. She married Robert Rohr on August 27, 1946, in Ellsworth, Kansas. He died November 26, 1979.
She worked at Travenol Labs on the line for 17 years and St. John’s New Horizon as a kitchen aid and retired in 2006. She enjoyed vegetable gardening, playing cards, dancing, sewing and helping others. She was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, Hays, Kansas.
Survivors include one son, Gary L. Rohr and wife, Patty, Hays, KS; one daughter, Joyce Wagner and husband, Art, Owasso, OK; one brother, Melvin Janne and wife, Deloris, Gorham, KS; seven grandchildren, Chad Rohr (Karen), Rishelle Davidson (Ben), Aaron Rohr (Betsy), Darin Rohr, Todd Wagner (Vicki), Bryan Wagner (Belinda), Jason Wagner (Megan); and 13 great grandchildren.

Catherine V. “Katie” Dreiling
Victoria, Kansas – Catherine V. “Katie” Dreiling, age 99, died Friday, August 2, 2013, at Via Christi Village Care Center, Hays, Kansas.
She was born August 9, 1913, on the family farm North of Victoria, Kansas, to Peter and Anna (Rohleder) Bollig. She married William P. “Bill” Dreiling on December 29, 1947 in Victoria, Kansas. He died March 4, 2004.
She and her husband operated the Dreiling Dairy and home milk deliveries until they retired in 1985 and moved into town. She attended school in Emmeram and Victoria. She was a homemaker, enjoyed cooking, baking, canning and tending to her vegetable and flower gardens. She was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and Christian Mothers all of Victoria.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Dreiling, Tampa, FL; Leroy Dreiling, Victoria KS; one daughter, Geraldine Riedel and husband, Kenneth, Lakewood, CO; two granddaughters, Rebecca Rubel, and husband, Will; Elizabeth Hines and husband (Harley); and one great grandson, Aaron Hines.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; seven brothers, Fr. Richard Bollig O.F.M. Cap., Anthony Bollig, Frank Bollig, Alex Bollig, Peter Bollig, Adolph Bollig, Alfred Bollig; one sister, Barbara Miller; two infant brothers, Peter Bollig and Jacob Bollig.
