Alvin M. Weigel

Victoria, Kansas – Alvin M. Weigel, age 92, died Friday, August 24, 2012, at Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas.

He was born July 22, 1920, in Hays, Kansas, to Michael P. and Agnes (Kuhn) Weigel. He married Ventura (Giebler) on November 18, 1941, in Russell, Kansas.

He was US Army Veteran and served during WWII. He worked over 50 years in the oil fields and retired in 1985 from RC Williams Trucking as a manager. In earlier years, he was a driver for H. Uhl Oil field Trucking Company, T.C. Strain Trucking and L. E. Whitlock Trucking Company. He moved to Victoria, Kansas, in 1982, from Pratt, Kansas. He was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church, V.F.W. Post No. 1751 and Knights of Columbus all of Victoria, Kansas, and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Ventura Weigel, of the home; one son, Gary Weigel and wife, Clarene, Colorado Springs, CO; two daughters, Delores Schmidt and husband, Terrance, Oklahoma City, OK; Jacqueline Luttrell and husband, Dennis, Eldon, MO; ten grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Frank, Edgar, Joseph, Jerome and Peter Weigel; five sisters, Rose Weigel, Lidwina Klobertanz, Basilia Frank, Regina Weigel and Irene Meis.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 29, 2012, at St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Victoria, Kansas. Burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery with military honors by the Victoria V.F.W. Post No. 1751.

A vigil service is at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, followed by a Knights of Columbus/ V.F.W. rosary at 7:30 P.M. Tuesday, both at Cline’s Mortuary, 412 Main, Victoria, Kansas 67671.

Rosalind Anna Desmarteau

Rosalind Anna Desmarteau, 88, Hays, KS died August 23, 2012 at her daughter’s house.

She was born December 24, 1923 in Hays, KS to Howard “Casey” and Matilda Leiker Houser. She attended Girls Catholic High School. She left school to work at Boeing during Word War II. She was a true Rosie the Riveter.

She married Dorious “John” Desmarteau in Hays, KS on January 6, 1947. He preceeded her in death on August 5, 2012. They farmed in Damar, lived shortly in Wyoming, then settled in Hays, KS. She was a homemaker and worked shortly as a sales person.

Rosie loved the outdoors and would spend time tending to the lawn and flower garden. She loved watching sports on TV with John, playing pitch, and doing crossword puzzles. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, the Altar Society Christian Mothers, and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include: A daughter, Mary Toepfer, Hays. A sister, Thelma King, Hays, KS. Three grandchildren, Matthew Glassman and wife Haylee, Bridgeport, CT; Andrea Paul and husband Landon, Hays; Anthony Glassman and girlfriend Lexi Copeland, Hays. One Great-Grandchild Isabelle Glassman, Bridgeport, CT. One Step-grandson Russell Toepfer, wife Kitty, and children Emma, Luke and Jack, Olathe, KS. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, husband, a brother; Harry “Buck” Houser, a sister; Charlotte Weltz; and son-in-law Thomas L. Toepfer.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 pm on Monday, August 27, 2012 at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Hays. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A combined Altar Society Christian Mothers and VFW Auxiliary service will be at 5:30 on Sunday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home followed by a parish vigil service at 6:30 pm. Friends may call on Sunday from 5:00 until 8:00 pm at the funeral home and from 2:00 pm until service time on Monday at the church. Hubert R. Dinkel

Hays, Kansas – Hubert R. Dinkel age 83, died Monday, August 20, 2012, at the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice Center, Wichita, Kansas.

He was born May 11, 1929, on the family farm North East of Victoria, Kansas, to Bonavent J. and Margaret (Kuhn) Dinkel. He married Anna Louise (Leiker) on May 7, 1956, in Munjor, Kansas.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran and served during the Korean Conflict. He was a graduate of Victoria High School. He retired in 1992, from Fort Hays State University Power Plant after working 21 years. He was a manager for the Victoria Farmers Co-op Store, a janitor for the Victoria High School, Kennedy Grade School in Hays, and a caretaker at St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays, Kansas.

He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Knights of Columbus Council No. 6984, and American Legion all of Hays, Kansas.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Louise Dinkel, of the home; one son, David Dinkel, Hays, KS; three daughters, Agnes “Aggie” Wasinger and husband, Gerald “Jerry”, Hays, KS; Janet Goetz and husband, Willian “Bill”, Wichita, KS; Joyce Dinkel Highlands Ranch, CO; four brothers, Gilbert Dinkel and wife, Cleota and Bob Dinkel and wife, Marge, both of Plainville, KS; Leroy Dinkel and Leland Dinkel and wife, Marlene, both of Victoria, KS; one sister-in-law, Rosie Dinkel, Victoria, KS; four grandchildren, Michael and Shaun Wasinger; Nicole and Megan Goetz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Donald Dinkel; one infant brother, Ralph Dinkel and Hubert’s third triplet infant brother.

Victoria, Kansas – age 77, died Sunday, August 19, 2012, at her home in  Victoria, Kansas.

She was born November 20, 1934, in Hays, Kansas, to Richard Roth and Mary (Mermis) Roth-Wellbrock. She married Frank C. Brungardt on October 17, 1953, at Hays, Kansas.

She was a graduate of Girls Catholic High in Hays, Kansas, and attended Marymount College in Salina, Kansas. She was a licensed insurance agent and owner with husband at F.& M. Insurance in Victoria, Kansas, until she retired in 2010. She was a past member of U.S.D. #432 School Board and a past St. Fidelis Church Parish Council member both of Victoria, Kansas. She was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and V.F.W. Auxiliary all of Victoria, Kansas.

Survivors include her husband, Frank C. Garlan L. Schoenrock Sr.

Victoria, Kansas – Garlan L. Schoenrock Sr. age 80, died Monday, August 20, 2012, at the Wheatland Nursing Center, Russell, Kansas. He was born in LaMars, Iowa, to Emil and Ellen (Durr) Schoenrock. He married Sandra (Hall) on June 3, 1955, at Reno, Nevada.

He was a graduate of Hawarden High School, Hawarden, Iowa. He was veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict. He worked for the Hested-Newburry Corporation and in lumber sales for 20 years. He then worked for Chief Building and Zetlow farm equipment for 8 years. He started Mr. G’s food vending trailer and catering in the late 1980’s and G & S sales until he retired in 2010. He moved to Victoria, Kansas, in 1978. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and American Legion both of Hays, Kansas.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Schoenrock, of the home; two sons, Garlan Schoenrock Jr. and wife, Jennifer, Waynesville, MO; Sue Stahlecker and husband, David, Pocatello, Idaho; Ken Schoenrock and wife, Amy, Elk City, OK; two brothers, Garry Schoenrock and wife, (Holly),Atlantic, Iowa; Denis Schoenrock Hawarden, Iowa; one sister, Elaine Kerr, San Diego, CA; eight grandchildren, Richard Schoenrock, Susan Shawger, Christina and Tim Schoenrock; Dirk and Kip Stahlecker; Aspen and Grant Schoenrock; one great grandchild, Ivy Schoenrock.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside services are 1:00 P.M. Thursday, August 23, 2012, at St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas. Military honors by the Hays V.F.W. nd American Legion. A church service will be held at a later date.

Louise Johnson

Agra resident, Louise Johnson, passed away Saturday, August 18, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska at the age of 77.

She was born October 13, 1934 in Rooks County, Kansas the daughter of Lawrence & Winnie (Haines) Mason. She was a homemaker.

She married Arlan Johnson on December 4, 1970 in Sabetha, Kansas. He survives.

Other survivors include her son, Mark Verhage of Kensington; 3 daughters, Jean Rice of Richmond, TX, Penny Campbell and Bev Meyer, both of Sabetha, KS; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; a brother, Clifford Mason of Stockton, KS; and 2 sisters, Helen Isom of Ogallala, NE and Peg Bockerstette of Boerne, TX.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 21, 2012 in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Becky Saddler officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodston Cemetery, Woodston, KS.

Mrs. Johnson will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 2nd Street, Phillipsburg, Kansas 67661, with the family receiving friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. that evening.

Scharlene F. Dreher, age 72, of Hays, passed away Thursday, August 17, 2012 at the Rush County Nursing Home in LaCrosse, Kansas.

She married Irvin Dreher on November 10, 1956 in Plainville, KS. She was a nurse for 23 years mostly at Hays Med. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella.

Survivors include her husband, Irvin of Hays; a son, Neal Dreher and wife Trica of Hays; three daughters, Mary Kinderknecht of Ellis, Sharon Biles and husband John of Desoto, KS and Debbie Clark and husband Eldon of Minneapolis, KS; two sisters, Pearl MaCatee of Oregon and Julia White of California; grandchildren, Christy Mergen and husband Chris, Matt Kinderknecht, Adam Kinderknecht and husband Ashley, Josh Biles, Jeremey Biles, Stephanie Owens, Blake Dreher, Michaela Dreher, Morgan Johnson and Alex Johnson; and a niece, Vicky Crenshaw and husband Rick of Fairfax, OK.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Ollie, Troy and Tommy Stumbaugh and three sisters, Ruth Robinette, Lil Haines and Violet NcAbier.

D.J. Pfannenstiel

D.J. Pfannenstiel, age 78, of Munjor, passed away Friday, August 17, 2012 at the Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney. He was born February 22, 1934 in Hays, Kansas to John M. and Mary Theresa (Herl) Pfannenstiel. He married Margie Leiker on April 15, 1961 in Ransom, Kansas.

He was the owner of D.J.’s Roustabout Service and a farmer. He was a veteran of the US Army, a member of the Hays American Legion and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. He enjoyed collecting antiques especially Studabaker’s and Tractors.

Survivors include his wife Margie of the home; four sons, Daniel Pfannenstiel and wife Annys of Hays, Jeff Pfannenstiel and wife Becky, Mike Pfannenstiel and wife Marilyn and James Pfannenstiel all of Munjor; a brother, Henry J. Pfannenstiel and wife Mary of Hays; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Herrman and husband Casey, Nichole Pfannenstiel, Adam Pfannenstiel andSamantha Pfannenstiel; two great grandchildren, Macie and Mila Herrman; step grandchildren, Jody Hagen, Rosa Rome, Mykaela Hagen, Krystian Hagen, Halley Robben, Adyn, Cooper and Ava Rome.

Munjor, Kansas – W. Velma Weigel, age 85, died Friday, August 17, 2012, at her home in Munjor, Kansas.

She was born June 2, 1927, on the farm near Vincent, Kansas, to Henry and Lidwina (Wittman) VonLintel. She married Albinus A. Weigel on August 19, 1946, in Victoria, Kansas. He died April 3, 2008.

She was raised in Walker and Victoria and attended grade school in Victoria, Kansas. She moved to Hays, Kansas in 1947. She and her husband owned and operated Weigel Oil Company and the Beer Garden on East Hwy 40 in Hays, Kansas. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church Hays, Kansas, and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Munjor, Kansas.

Berta Van Diest

Prairie View resident, Berta Van Diest, passed away Tues., Aug. 14, at the Logan Manor in Logan, KS at the age of 81.  She was born March 24, 1931 in Prairie View, the daughter of Burton & Marguerite (Goeken) Broun.  Berta was a school teacher.  Her daughter, Karen, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas, of the home; son, Mike, of Prairie View; daughter, Krista of Norton, KS; three sisters:  Rose Marie Snyder of Midland, MI; Lois Poer of Liberal, KS; and Nora Kats of Norton, KS; 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sat., Aug. 18, at 2:00 p.m. in the Prairie View Reformed Church with Pastor Joel Hiesterman, Jay Brandon and Glen Graham officiating.  Burial will follow in the Prairie View Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thurs. & Fri. from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with the family receiving friends Friday evening from 7 – 8 p.m.

C. Leroy Culbreath

Hays, Kansas – C. Leroy Culbreath, age 66, died Monday, August 13, 2012, at Medical Lodge Post -Acute Care Center, Kansas City, Kansas.

He was born May 9, 1946, in Stafford, Kansas, to Samuel T. “Ted” and Thelma (Henry) Culbreath. He married Martha Rose (Karlin) on September 26, 1986, in Hays, Kansas. She died September 12, 2006.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam era. He was a graduate of St. John’s High School, St. John’s, Kansas. He was a Police Officer with the Hays police Department and the Ellis County Sheriff Department for 26 years and retired due to his heath in 1995. He was a member of the Hays V.F.W. Post No. 9076. He was very active with the Ellis County 4-H Club, Pheasants Forever , and Hays City Sportsmen Club. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsmen.

Survivors include one son, Sam Culbreath, of the home; one daughter, Misti Gaston and husband, Daniel, Kansas City, MO; one sister, Virginia Bauer, Larned, KS; two grandchildren, Lexi and Drake Gaston. He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife, Martha Rose Culbreath.

Hays, Kansas – David P. Dreiling, age 62, passed away on Friday, August 10, 2012, at his home.

He was born November 4, 1949, in Hays, Kansas, to Clarence H. “Druble” and Sophie (Fross) Dreiling. He married Sheryl (Schlegel ) on December 28, 1968, in Hays, Kansas.

He attended St. Josephs Military Academy, Hays, Kansas, and was a 1975, graduate of the William Allen White School of Journalism at the University of Kansas. He served as Director of Development at St. Anthony Hospital, Hays, Kansas, for 17 years and more recently worked for G.E. Genworth & Farm Bureau as a long-term care specialist.

Survivors include two sons, Darin Dreiling and wife, Kriste, Hays, KS; Doug Dreiling and wife ,Lindsey, Hays, KS; one daughter, Kim Griffith and husband, Troy, Great Bend, KS; his mother, Sophie Staab, Catherine, KS; a sister, Sue Younger and husband, Marlin, McPherson, KS; his former wife and friend, Sheryl Dreiling, Hays, KS; nine grandchildren Aliya and Kaitlyn Dreiling; Dylan, Elle, Beau, and Colton Dreiling; Kaily, Connor, and Braden Griffith; two step-brothers, Dennis Staab and wife, Marla , Hays, KS; Staab Jerry and wife ,Sharon, Hays, KS; .

He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence H. Dreiling; one brother, Dennis Dreiling; and his step father, Alfred Staab.

Services are 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays ,1919 East 22nd, Hays, Kansas, 67601. Burial is at Plainville City Cemetery, Plainville, Kansas. Visitation is from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, and from 10:30 A.M. Wednesday until the time of the service at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays.

Long Island resident, William “Bill” Godfrey, passed away Wed., Aug. 8, 2012 at his home in Long Island, KS at the age of 51. He was born Nov. 3, 1960 in Phillipsburg, KS to Robert C. & Ila Marie (Schilowsky) Godfrey. Bill worked as a heavy equipment operator for Phillips County.

Survivors include his brothers, Albert Leroy, of Anthony, KS and Bobby, of Niederwald, TX; his stepfather, Eldon George of Lebanon, KS; and several nieces & nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 13, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Dean Gilbert officiating. Burial will follow in the Long Island Cemetery, Long Island, with military honors by Fort Riley.

Visitation will be Sat. & Sun. from noon – 9:00 p.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with the family receiving friends from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening.

LAWRENCE “LARRY” FRENZL

Lawrence “Larry” Frenzl, 84, Hays, died Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at his home.

He was born May 10, 1928 in Odin, Kansas the son of Hugo and Matilda (Hoffner) Frenzl. On August 29, 1952 he married Edna Kolste in Bentonville, Arkansas. He attended Odin Catholic School and worked as a superintendant with Reece Construction Co. in Scandia, Kansas from 1949 through 1984 with two years leave to serve in the US Army from 1950-1952. He also worked at McClaren Ford, Hays Pathology Lab, and Paul MacDonald Chevrolet before retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the Hays VFW.

Survivors include his wife, of the home in Hays, sons Michael Frenzl and wife Jane of Hays and Ronald Frenzl and wife Donna of Olathe, KS, daughters Susan Miller and husband Ken of Hays and Betty Hrabe and husband Kenny of Stockton, KS, brothers, Leo Frenzl and wife Delores of Odin, KS, and William “Bill” Frenzl of Great Bend, KS, sisters Viola Meyeres of Hoisington, KS, Gertrude Hickel fo Claflin, KS, and Dorothy Reif of Beaver, KS. Eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Joe, Frank and Gus, and sisters Teresa Wondra and Marie Meyeres.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 5:00 until 7 on Friday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine, and on Saturday from 9:30 am until service time at the church. A parish vigil service will be at 6:00 on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hays Medical Center in care of the funeral home. Marvin P. Augustine

Hays, Kansas – Marvin P. Augustine, age 83, died Monday, August 6, 2012, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

He was born March 11, 1929,in Hays, Kansas, to Joseph and Cunnigunda (Korbe) Augustine.

He married Rozanne (Walters) on September 23, 1954, in Severin, Kansas. He worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for 37 years and retired in 1989. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the LaCrosse Knights of Columbus and had lived in LaCrosse for 33 years until moving to Hays, in 1989. He was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church and American Legion Post No. 2970 both of Hays, Kansas.

Survivors include his wife, Rozanne Augustine, of the home; one son, Dave Augustine, Lawrence, KS; three daughters, Debbie Wasinger and husband, Lloyd, Manhattan, KS. Becky Sledd and Kelly Augustine, both of Lenexa, KS; three brothers, Lavern Augustine and wife, Betty, and Robert Augustine and wife, Luella, both of Hays, KS; Francis “Sonny” Augustine, Salina, KS; two sisters, Josephine Urban, Ellis, KS; Norma Weigel, Hays; six grandchildren, Laura Wasinger, Nick Wasinger, Danielle Augustine, Taylor Augustine, Brooke Villigram and husband, Richard, Blake Sledd; three great grandchildren, Evan Wasinger, Max Villigram and Briggs Villigram.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Alfred and Ralph Augustine; two sisters, Mary Whittaker and Lucille Younger; two grandchildren, Brady Sledd and Blair Sledd.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Thursday, August 9, 2012, at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, Hays, Kansas. Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays, Kansas, with military honors by the Hays American legion and V.F.W. A vigil service is at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, followed by a LaCrosse Knights of Columbus at 7:30 P.M. Wednesday, both at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays 1919 East 22nd Street Hays, Kansas 67601.

Visitation is from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. Wednesday, and from 8:30 to 9:45 A.M. Thursday, all at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays. Memorial to St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, Hays, Kansas.
