Elaine Klitzke

Hays, Kansas – Elaine Klitzke, age 64, died Sunday, August 5, 2012, at her home in Hays, Kansas.

She was born January 5, 1948, in Hays, Kansas to Bernard B. “Ben” and Ida (Meis) Brungardt. She married Steve Klitzke on April 10, 1982, in Hays, Kansas. She grew up on the farm at Emmeram, Kansas, and was 1966 graduate of Victoria High School. She worked for the Hays Daily News as the Classified Add Manager for 22 years and retired in 1996.

She was recognized by Harris News Corporation many times through-out her career. She followed in her mother’s footsteps, being a seamstress for a number of years from her home. She enjoyed cats, gardening, going to garage sales and antiquing, her grandchildren’s sports, her family and grandchildren. She was a fervent believer of God and Country and championed many causes.

Survivors include her husband, Steve Klitzke, of the home; one son, Jon Kuhn, Haysville, KS; two step daughters, Tally Ann Klitzke, McPherson, KS; Tara Goering and husband, Brandon, Hays, KS; one sister, Darlene Dreiling and husband, Julius, Victoria, KS; three grandchildren, Kyler Meyers, Blade and Sage Goering; her father-in-law, Carl J. Klitzke, Ransom, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents and mother-in-law, Vivian Klitzke.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Saturday, August 11, 2012, at St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Victoria, Kansas. Burial in Mount Allen Cemetery, Hays, Kansas.

A vigil service is at 7:00 P.M. Friday, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays 1919 East 22nd Street Hays, Kansas 67601. Visitation is from 5:00 to 9:00 P.M. Friday, and from 8:30 to 9:30 A.M. Saturday all at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays.

Dean Bruning

Former Phillipsburg resident, Dean Bruning of Rogers, Arkansas, passed away Friday, August 3, 2012 in Bentonville, AR at the age of 76.

He was born Sept. 6, 1935 in Phillips County, KS the son of William & Velma (Coffin) Bruning.

He was married to Connie F. Ellis on June 30, 1962, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary earlier this year.

Survivors include his wife Connie of Rogers, his sister Muriel Fix of Phillipsburg, KS, 3 sons, William and his wife Stephanie of Benton, AR, Curtis and his wife Angi of Aurora, CO and Troy and his wife Maurica of Olathe and 9 grandchildren.

Cremation was planned.  A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 8, 2012 in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Dave Pugh officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel.

Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel.

Patti O’Leary

Former Phillipsburg, KS resident, Patti O’Leary Currence passed away June 30, 2012 in Palm Desert, CA at the age of 88.

She was born February 10, 1924 to Frances Darrell O’Leary and Nora Patterson at Kiowa, KS.

She married David “Bob” Currence at the Christian Church in Phillipsburg on August 20, 1947.  She was a general accounting manager for 40 years at Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Company.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Survivors include nephews, Calen Currence of Elgin, IL, Barry Currence of Longmont, CO, David Codding of Artesia, NM; a niece Peggy Codding of Boston, MA; and sister-in-law, Darlene Rumbaugh of Phillipsburg, KS.

Cremation was planned.  A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 10, 2012 in Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg, KS with Pastor Chris Davis officiating.

Rosalita Dome

Basehor, Kansas – Rosalita (Rosie) Dome, age 83, died Sunday, July 29, 2012, at Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, MO. She was born June 21, 1929, in Munjor, Kansas, to John M. and Mary (Herl) Pfannenstiel.

She married Alfred Dome on May 30, 1950, in Hays, Kansas. She was a 1947 graduate of Girls Catholic High in Hays, Kansas.

Survivors include her daughter, Donna Mahoney and husband, David, Bonner Springs, KS; one son, George Dome and wife, Karen, Tinton Falls, NJ; two brothers, Henry Pfannenstiel and wife, Mary, Hays, KS; Danny Pfannenstiel and wife, Margie, Munjor, KS; five grandchildren, Kyle Slater, Miriah and Matt Mahoney, Lee Ann Schwartz, and Heather Dome.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and four brothers, Ted, Bob, Jake and Edward Pfannenstiel; eight sisters, Lucy Schmidtberger, Virginia Dreiling, Ida Dinkel, Minnie Berens, Eleanor Schumacher, Armella Ross, Louise Steckline, and Theresa Schippers; one infant brother, and two infant sisters.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 4, 2012, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the service time at the church. Robert J. Sander

Victoria, Kansas – Robert J. Sander, age 86, died Saturday, July 28, 2012, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

He was born April 9, 1926, on the farm North West of Victoria, Kansas, to Joseph A. and Theresa (Quint) Sander. He graduated from Victoria High School and was a U.S. Army veteran and served during WWII.

He was a farmer and worked for NKC Grain Company and as a welder for Ellis County Roads and Bridge Department and retired in 1991. He was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church, 3rd Degree and 4th Degree Assembly Knights of Columbus, and a Life Member of the V.F.W. Post No. 1751, all of Victoria, Kansas. He held state offices in the V.F.W. as Past District Commander and Past State Commander. He enjoyed his family and playing cards.

Survivors include one sister, Lauraine Drazic, Kansas City, KS; one brother-in-law, A.J. Schmidtberger, Victoria, KS; one sister-in-law, Jo Sander, Victoria, KS; and several nieces a nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Edgar, Alfred, Hubert Sander; five sisters, Georgine Dreiling, Virginia Cardwell, Sr. Sarah Sander C.S.A., Thelma Riedel, Celeste Schmidtberger.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 1, 2012, at St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Victoria, Kansas. Burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas, with military honors by the Victoria V.F.W.

A vigil will be at 6:30 P.M. Tuesday, followed by a 3rd and 4th Degree rosary at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday all at Cline’s Mortuary, 412 Main, Victoria, Kansas, 67671. The 4th Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard from for 6:30 to 7:30 P.M. Tuesday, at Cline’s Mortuary.

Joan F. Whitney

Norton resident, Joan F. Whitney, died Friday, July 27, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE at the age of 83.

Joan was born September 22, 1928 the daughter of Fred A. & Alta F. (Thompson) Scheetz.  Joan owned and operated the Cottage Style Shop in Norton for many years.

She and Eddie W. Whitney were married at the Catholic Rectory in Norton, Kansas, on August 25, 1947.  He survives.

Other survivors include a son, Mark C. Whitney and his wife Torre, of Norton, daughter-in-law Marnie Whitney of Olathe, Kansas, 5 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers & a son, Kevin M. Whitney.

A scriptural wake service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Norton.  The family will receive friends following the Wake until 8:30 p.m. in the church.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Fathers Vincent Thu Laing and Dan Scheetz officiating.  Burial will follow in the Norton Cemetery, Norton, KS.

Joan will lie in state at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

Alpine, California – David McDougal, age 65, died Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at his home. He was born December 5, 1946, in San Diego, California. He married Lee (Joy) in Hays, Kansas.

Survivors include his wife, Lee McDougal; one son, Daniel McDougal; one daughter, Jamie Van Clay and husband David; four grandsons, Daniel McDougal II, Hayden VanClay, Gage VanClay and Ryder VanClay; one sister, Donna Schoolcraft.

Phillipsburg resident, James E. “Jim” Northup, passed away Monday, July 23, at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, KS at the age of 67. He was born March 8, 1945 in Stockton, KS to David G. & Leona M. (Cotten) Northup. Jim owned & operated Jim’s Auto Parts in Phillipsburg for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Patty, of the home in Phillipsburg; daughters, Shelley Houser of Sharon Springs, KS and Kelley Dibble of Phillipsburg; brother, David Northup of Stockton, KS; sister, Bea McDaneld of Branson, MO; and 5 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 27, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in the First Assembly of God Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastor David Pugh officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Shirley E. Roberts

Hays, Kansas – Shirley E. Roberts, age 60, died Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas.

She was born July 7, 1952, in Quinter, Kansas, to Delmar O. and Vera I. (Orten) Roberts.

She grew up in Quinter, Kansas, was a 1970 graduate of Quinter High School and attended Fort Hays State University.  She worked for Campus Crusade For Christ, and was a secretary for the Math Department at Kansas University and for the Social Sciences Department at Fort Hays State University. She worked for the Kansas Area Health/Education Center, Warehouse Incorporated, Insurance Planning and Midwest Drug Store, all in Hays, Kansas.  She was an avid reader and sports fan, she enjoyed her family, friends and her pet, Molly.

Survivors include one brother, Erroll and wife, Eileen, Hays, KS; one sister, Joyce Roberts-Lott, Quinter, KS; one sister-in-law, Barbara Roberts, Hays, KS; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Richard Roberts and one nephew, Charles Gregg Roberts.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Monday, July 16, 2012,  at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays 1919 East 22nd Hays, Kansas  67601.  A graveside service is at 12:00 noon Monday, at the Baker Township Cemetery in Quinter, Kansas.

Regina Dechant

Hays, Kansas – Regina Dechant, age 89, died Friday, July 6, 2012, at the Brookside Retirement Community at Overbrook, Kansas. She was born December 12, 1922, in Victoria, Kansas, to Frank M. and Rosa (Hertel) Dinkel. She married Richard Dechant Sr. on May 10, 1948, in Victoria, Kansas. He died December 15, 2003.

She was a homemaker and participated in farming with her husband for 39 years. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and IHM Funeral Ministry Committee, Hays Medical Center Auxiliary all of Hays, Kansas. She was a former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church Plainville, Kansas.

Survivors include one son, Richard Dechant Jr. and wife, Melinda, Baldwin City, KS; two grandchildren, Richard Cody Dechant and Aubrey Sophia Dechant; two brothers, George Dinkel and Father Harvey Dinkel O.F.M. Cap., both of Victoria, KS; six sisters, Sister Francis Rose Dinkel C.S.A., Fon du Lac, WI; Melinda Griebel, Mary Younger and Sister Paul Ann Dinkel C.S.A., all of Hays, KS; Irene Scruggs, Manhattan, KS; Viola Richmeier, Grinnell, KS.

Itha Scheck

Itha (Uhrich) Scheck, 94, Hays, died peacefully on Friday, July 6, 2012, at her daughter’s home in Hays.

She was born June 28, 1918, on the family farm in Graham County, KS, to Christian and Mariana (Waldman) Uhrich.

She married Wendelin Scheck on April 21, 1947. He preceded her in death, December 17, 1967. She was a farmer, homemaker, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She worked at Fort Hays State University Memorial Union until her retirement.

She enjoyed word puzzles, playing cards, gardening, crocheting, embroidery and watching baseball.

She was a member of St, Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, KS.

Survivors include one sister, Eugenia Uhrich, of Hays; three sister-in-laws, Albertina Uhrich, of Dallas, TX, Magdalena (Macte) Uhrich, of WaKeeney, and Delores Uhrich, of Great Bend; two sons, Leon J. Scheck and Ronald A. Scheck, both of Dighton; two daughters, Joleen M. Meusburger and husband, Joseph, of Las Vegas, NV, and Sue K. Mall and husband, Jim, of Hays; nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Francis and wife, Ann, Julius and wife, Clara, Joseph, Leo and wife, Rose, George, Cletus and wife, Helen, and Alfred and wife, Joan; and two sisters, Juliana Haffner and husband, Lambert, Pauline Zimmerman, and husband, Joseph, and infant sister, Mary.

Services will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday July 11, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays. Graveside services and interment will be at 1:30 p.m. in St. Michael Cemetery, Collyer, KS.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00pm on Tuesday July 10, 2012 with a Vigil Service at 6:00 and a Rosary to be said at 6:30 at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine.

Louis R. Sander

Gorham, Kansas – Louis R. Sander age 86, died Sunday, July 8, 2012, at Russell Regional Hospital, Russell, Kansas.

He was born January 7, 1926, on the farm North West of Walker, Kansas, to Anton P. and Rosa (Nemecheck) Sander. He married Irene (Dechant) on August 3, 1950, in Walker, Kansas.

He grew up in Walker, Kansas and attended Walker Grade School, a veteran of US Army and served during WWII, and was a farmer East of Gorham, Kansas for the last 50 years. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus both of Gorham, Kansas, the 4th Degree Assembly Knights of Columbus Victoria, Kansas, a member of V. F. W. Post 6240 and American Legion both of Russell, Kansas and a charter member of the Sunflower Polka Club.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Sander, of the home; two sons, Bruce Sander and wife, Mary, Gorham, KS; Mark Sander and wife, Susie, Overland Park, KS; one brother, Lawrence Sander, Salina, KS; four sisters, Sr. Helen Sander C.S.A. Former Phillipsburg resident, Dorothy Glover, died Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at the Aberdeen Health & Rehab Center in Aberdeen, SD at the age of 63. She was born in Phillipsburg, KS on March 1, 1949 to Ralph & Lois (Turner) Herrick. Dorothy worked as a Dietary Aide.

Survivors include her son Burton of Groton SD; and two daughters, Angela VanRoekel of Worthing SD, and Sandra Glover of Aberdeen SD; 4 grandchildren; 3 brothers Russ Herrick of Denver CO, Leland Herrick and Ed Herrick both of Phillipsburg KS, and 1 sister Maxine (Jeff) Arasmith of Cheyenne WY.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband Jeff Glover, her parents Ralph and Lois Herrick, and her sister Becky Herrick.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 6, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Joel Hiesterman officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Robert L. “Bob” Winslow

Robert L. “Bob” Winslow, 73, of Long Island, KS died Wednesday, June 27 at the Harlan County Health System in Alma, NE

He was born February 4, 1939 in Burlington, CO to Ulysses and Lydia (Zahn) Winslow. He grew up in Burlington and graduated from Burlington High School.

On June 5, 1960 he married Phyllis J. Leichliter in Goodland, KS.

He lived in Goodland, KS and worked for the Rock Island Railroad until it closed in 1980 then he worked for Burlington Northern Railroad for 2 years. He moved to Norton, KS and worked for the Norton State Hospital for 6 months then worked for Kyle Railroad until retiring in 1996. He supplemented his income by working various jobs, including helping in many of the area sale barns.

He was a member of Norton, KS Eagle’s Lodge, enjoyed tending to his gardens, watching pro wrestling and he “tolerated” BINGO.

Cremation was planned. Memorial services will be Wednesday, July 4, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg, KS with Pastor Dave Pugh officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later time in the Goodland, KS Cemetery.

Jackie (McQueen) Engler

Oceanside, CA resident, Jackie (McQueen) Engler, died December 1, 2011 at the age of 87.

She was born November 12, 1924 in Phillips County, KS the daughter of Vern & Daisy McQueen.  She was raised on the family farm northwest of Stockton, KS.

Jackie was united in marriage to Paul Engler on January 23, 1945 in California.  He preceded her in death on January 21, 2002.

Survivors include her daughter, Sheila Cannella; granddaughter, Sabrina Smitherman & husband, Brent; 2 great grandchildren, Lola & Levi Smitherman; brother, Carroll McQueen & wife, Deanna; brother-in-law, Darrel Engler; and many beloved nieces & nephews.

Cremation was planned.  Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, June 30, 2012 in the Bogart Cemetery, Phillips County, KS, with Pastor Gary Davison officiating.

Marjorie Mae Curtis

Marjorie Mae Curtis passed away on Monday, June 25, 2012 at Hays Medical Center. Marge was 83 years old.

Marge was born on December 7, 1928 in Galatia, Kansas. She was the youngest child of Carl and Bertha Lebsack. In 1938 the family moved to Hays where Carl built a home at 406 Ash. She attended Picken Hall School and graduated from Hays High School in 1946. She graduated from Fort Hays Kansas State College in 1950 with a degree in music education. She was an accomplished violinist, singer, and pianist. She later earned a Masters degree in education.

In 1950, Marge married Donald Rex Curtis. They graduated from college and were married the same day at First United Methodist Church in Hays. Marge and Rex then moved to St. Francis, Kansas where they both taught. In 1953 they returned to Hays to work in the family oil business, Lebsack Oil Production, Inc. Marge taught kindergarten at Lincoln Elementary School and after her boys were born she started the Curtis Nursery School, a pre-school which she ran in the basement of her home on south Ash street for 27 years. Marge and Rex had two, sons Dr. Jeff Curtis of Hays, and Dr. John Curtis of Manhattan.

Marge was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church of Hays. She was a Life Member of the Fort Hays State University Alumni Association and was also active in Sigma Alpha Iota and PEO, Chapter EC.

Marge was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister Evaleen Mitchell.

Marge is survived by her husband, Rex and son Jeffery and his wife Connie, grandchildren Christian, Cathryn, and Carter all of Hays; son John and wife Laurie of Manhattan, and grandchildren Lindsey (Manhattan), Julie and Matthew Ott (Detroit), and Matthew and Andrea Curtis (Onalaska, WI), and great-grandchildren Tristen, Tanner, and Ava. She is also survived by her brother, Wayne Lebsack and wife Pat of Lyons, KS.

Marge enjoyed their cabin at Cedar Bluff Lake and trolling on the Double-J, their pontoon boat. She loved checking on her cows, the farm ground, and enjoyed spending time with her kitty “Snuggles” while watching the weather channel. She remained active in the oil business with her brother Wayne until the time of her death.

Visitation will be Friday, June 29th from 4:00 – 6:00 pm at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 30, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church in Hays. Burial will be in the Fort Hays Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Riley L. Irwin

Riley L. Irwin, 79, died Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at Via Christie/St. John’s Nursing Home in Hays, Kansas. He was born on October 17, 1932 in Russell, Kansas to Russell and Gladys Irwin. He married Doris J. Williamson on December 31, 1954. He spent most of his life in Gorham, Kansas running a service station and doing construction. Riley was a devoted husband, loving father, father-in-law, and grandfather and was the most unselfish, kind, loving person you could ever know. He was a member of the Gorham Community Church and the American Legion.

Survivors include his children Randy and Marlene (Hays), Craig and Melissa (Hays), Troy and Denise (Lexington, Ky), Darren and Pam (Salina), sister Judy and husband Dallas Wise (Colorado), and sister Arlene and husband George Ralston (Mullinville), special friend Elda Heideman (Nebraska), 14 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Doris, son Danny, his parents, brothers John, Paul, Max, and Marvin, and sister Bonnie.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 29, 2012, at the Gorham Community Church in Gorham. Burial will be in the Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Gorham. Friends may call at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine in Hays, Kansas on Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. Memorials have been established in his name and memory with the Gorham Community Church or Via Christi/St. John’s of Hays Nursing Home. Delmer F. Berens

Fullerton, California. – Delmer F. Berens, age 75, former Walker, Kansas resident died Sunday, June 24, 2012, at the Lakewood Regional Medical Center in Lakewood, CA. He was born September 27, 1936, in Walker, Kansas, to Herman W. and Sophie (Windholz) Berens.

He attended Walker Grade School and Victoria High School. He worked for the Chrysler Corp. in Denver CO., then moved to Fullerton, California, in 1969, and worked for Hunt’s Food until he retired in 1998.

Survivors include three sons, Rodney Berens, Troy Berens and wife, Jennifer, all of Fullerton, CA; Toby Berens and wife, Cindy, Redding, CA; two daughters, Heidi Berens, Fullerton, CA; Audra Berens and companion, Stephen Welch, Springfield, OR; ten grandchildren; one great grandchild; three sisters, Sharon Thompson and husband, Olen, Hondo, TX; Joyce Newell and husband, Stan, Hays, KS; Mary Kay Schippers and husband, Daniel, Victoria, KS; sister-in-law, Norma Jean Berens, Hays, KS; his former wife, Pat Berens, Fullerton, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Vernon, Raymond Joe, Larry Berens; one daughter, Casey Berens; and one grandchild, Jarrod Jensen.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Saturday, June 30, 2012, at St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Victoria, Kansas. Burial in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Walker, Kansas. A vigil service is at 6:30 P.M. Friday followed by a Class of 1955 Rosary at 7:00 P.M. Friday all at Cline’s Mortuary 412 Main Victoria, Kansas 67671. Visitation is from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. Friday and from 8:30 to 9:45 A.M. Saturday all at Cline’s Mortuary Victoria, Kansas.
