Maurice Charles Schwartz

Maurice Charles Schwartz, 92, passed away November 1, 2019, after battling cancer for three years, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. He was born on April 17, 1927, at St. Leo, Kansas to William & Martha (Blasi) Schwartz. He married Bernita Marie Pfeifer July 29, 1947 at Liebenthal. She died March 22, 2012.

A Great Bend resident for most of his life, Maurice grew up in St. Leo, Kansas. He was a carpenter for Morrison Construction for 21 years, and was self-employed for many years after he left Morrison Construction. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church and was very strong in his faith. He was also a member of the VFW Post #3111 and served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was considered a master carpenter, building several houses and also built a race car and boat.
He is survived by seven sons, Robert Schwartz and wife Barbara of Great Bend, Duane Schwartz of Grand Island, NE, Danny Schwartz and wife Stacy of Great Bend, Bill Schwartz and wife Jaynee of Great Bend, Kenny Schwartz and wife Dawn of Wichita, Kevin Schwartz of Great Bend and Keith Schwartz and wife Kay of Salina; three daughters, Kathy Pedigo and husband Don of Great Bend, Elaine Miller and husband Craig of McPherson, and Pam Stegman and husband Tom of Yukon, OK; one sister, Edith Keeler of Great Bend; 29 grandchildren; 45 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 9 step great grandchildren; and 4 step great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, B. Marie Schwartz; one daughter in law, Diane Schwartz; two brothers, Rheinard Schwartz and Arthur Schwartz; four sisters, Rosalynn Henning, Lydia Weber, Sally Gregg, and Marcelline Suchy; and two great grandchildren, Matthew Kearn and Faith Hitts.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Monday, November 4, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 5, 2019, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Father Don Bedore presiding. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to Prince of Peace Parish, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Viann Brougher

Viann Brougher, 84, went to be with the Lord October 31, 2019, passing away at Brookdale Assisted Living in Great Bend, Kansas. She was born July 23, 1935, to parents Jesse “Duke” and Vi (Radke) Pinkston in Larned, Kansas.

She attended Radium schools where she met and later married the love of her life, Joe Brougher on March 21, 1935. She worked alongside him with the family farming business and later as co-owner of Brougher Oil and Mohawk Drilling Companies in Great Bend. He died on July 16, 2016.

Upon retirement, she earned her Real Estate license and became a successful realtor for Coldwell Banker in Garden City, earning many awards and achievements, including the Million Dollar Club Award multiple times. She continued her real estate passion with Weigand Realtors in Hutchinson for a time.

She and Joe spent many years traveling and enjoying adventures with each other, family and many friends. She was an avid K-State fan, active member of the Highland Golf Club in Hutchinson and worshiped at the Church of the Nazarene in Hutchinson. Viann was a member of the Garden City Board of Realtors, serving as Past President, and served the community of Garden City as an Ambassador of the Chamber of Commerce.

She is survived by three daughters, Toni Rice of Great Bend, Kansas, Vicki Brown and husband Bob of Jasper, Georgia, and Sherri Massey and husband Randy of Manhattan, Kansas; 9 grandchildren, Rocky Seybert, Tim Seybert, Andi Rice, Jessica Patzell, Matt Brown, Nicole Brown, Adam Massey, Sam Massey and Hanna Massey; and 5 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Joe; daughter, Patti Patzell; her parents; and one brother.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Sunday, November 3, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 9:30 a.m., Monday, November 4, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Chaplain Randall Turner presiding. Interment will follow in the Great Bend Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Kindred Hospice, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Cale A. Prewo

Cale A. Prewo, age 18, of Grinnell, passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at Swedish Medical Center, Englewood, CO. He was born July 11, 2001, to Gary and Jill (Bloom) Prewo in Colby. He was a farmer and student.

Cale is survived by his parents, Gary and Jill, and his brothers: Craig Prewo and Cory (Daisy) Prewo of Grinnell, and nephews, Camdyn and Carson Prewo.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents: Acquiline and Bertha Prewo and John “Buddy” and Beula Bloom: Uncle Mike Bloom and infant Uncle Donnie Prewo.

Anthony (Tony) Worek

Anthony (Tony) Worek, 61, of Grainfield, Kansas, died Sunday, October 27, 2019 at Hays Medical Center. He was born August 1st, 1958, fostered by Earl and Darlene (Dollinger) Jones. He graduated from Arvada West High School. Tony worked for the Jefferson County Department of Transportation and Kansas Department of Transportation. He loved NASCAR and was a member of the Grainfield RC Raceway team. His passion was woodwork with a hope to have his own workshop.

He was preceded in death by his foster parents; brothers, Bob Jones, Rick Jones, and Steve Franklin.

He is survived by his children, Michael (Jessica) Worek, of Broomfield, CO and Shawn (Rachel) Worek, of Brighton, CO; two grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Shirley J. Anderson

Shirley J. Anderson, 85, died on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City. She was born on April 3, 1934 at Great Bend the daughter of Harold & Vera L. (Smith) Beasley. She married Charles J. Anderson on February 22, 1953 at Deerfield. He died on October 29, 2000.

Shirley spent her early years in Great Bend and then graduated from Leoti High School. After her marriage they moved to Garden City where she was a homemaker. Her passion was her family. She is preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, 2 Daughters- Pamela Jean Anderson and Paula Jane Anderson and Brother- Lloyd Beasley.

She is survived by her 4 Sons- John & Vicki Anderson of Holcomb, Duane Anderson of Garden City, Richard & Connie Anderson of Wichita and Greg & Angela Anderson of Garden City, 8 Grandchildren and 12 Great-Grandchildren.

Darrell Henry “Hank” Hays Jr., 66, of Alton and Natoma, Kansas, died on Tuesday, October 29, 2019, at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.

A celebration of Hank’s life will be held at 11 A.M. on Monday, November 04, 2019, at the Natoma United Methodist Church in Natoma, Kansas. Burial will follow at the Natoma City Cemetery in Natoma, Kansas.

William Arthur Mock

Brighton, Colorado, resident and former Delta, Colorado, resident William Arthur Mock, 88, passed away on Sunday, October 27, 2019 at his home in Brighton, CO surrounded by family.

Bill was born on July 16, 1931. His Father was between work at the time and Bill was born in a small camp on a beach close to Watsonville, California (or so the story goes). He grew up on a farm outside Hotchkiss, Colorado the child of James Raymond Mock and Emily Ester (Monroe) Mock. He was the fifth of five children; Jimmy, Alice, Donnie, and Rita. His father died of a heart attack when Bill was five years old. After his Father passed away his Mother moved the children into Delta, CO. He graduated from Delta High School in 1949 and went directly to Denver where he began working for Gates Rubber Company. He retired from Gates in 1989 at the age of 58, followed by a 30-year retirement of mostly fishing and some really wonderful trips he and Nora enjoyed together.

In 1951 Bill met Nora Kathleen Rhoads at a boarding house in Denver, CO. They were married on August 9, 1952 at the Warren United Methodist Church also in Denver. To this union, two daughters, Kathleen and Debra were born. Bill and Nora began their lives together in Southeast Denver where they lived for 14 years. They then moved their family to Brighton, CO in 1966 and shared their home and lives together for 64 years until Nora’s death in January 2017. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his brothers; Jimmy and Donnie and his sisters; Alice and Rita.

He is survived by two daughters; Kathy Hellyer of Akron, Colorado and Debbie Oberhausen and her partner Toni Bellucci of Brighton, Colorado. Three granddaughters; Hallie Thomas of Gunter, TX, Kara Smith & her husband Jeff of Akron, CO and Samantha Oberhausen currently studying in Salem, OR, three Great granddaughters Chloe and Eleanor Thomas, and baby Smith to arrive in November. Sisters-in-law Patty Mock of Mt. Vernon, Washington, Doris Venden of Loveland, CO and Iva Lee Stephens of Goodland, KS. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Funeral services for Bill will be held on Saturday, Nov 2, 2019 at 2:00 PM MT at the Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland with Pastor Doug Amend officiating. Burial will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.

Douglas Kent Schlegel, 57, passed away on October 29, 2019 at his home in Ness City, Kansas. He was born on September 4, 1962 in Ness City, Kansas the son of Walter and Evelyn (Langer) Schlegel.

Funeral service will be on Saturday, November 2, 2019, 2:00 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, Ness City followed by burial in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City on Thursday from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m. and on Friday, November 1, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. Rosary and Parish Vigil will be held at the funeral home on Friday beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Corlyss Kay ‘Corky’ Rowe

Graveside services for Corlyss Rowe will be held on Friday, November 1, 2019, at 3:30 p.m., at the Great Bend Cemetery.

Corlyss died on October 29, 2019, in Hays, Kansas.

She was born on January 14, 1940 to V.C. and Amelia Rowe.

Corlyss attended Hoisington Public Schools, graduating in the class of 1958 from Hoisington High School.

After high school she attended the K.U. Medical Center, receiving certification in Licensed Practical Nursing.

Corlyss is survived by her sister, Gwen Price, Enid, Oklahoma; her niece, Laurie Price and her children, Morgan Blodgett and Cooper Blodgett; her nephew, Lance Price (Jill) and their children, Paige and Caroline. She was preceded in death by her parents, V.C. and Amelia Rowe; and her brother-in-law, Sherm Price.

Bernard (Bernie) Nemechek

Tribune, Kansas, resident Bernard (Bernie) Nemechek, 90, passed away on May 29, 2019, at the Greeley County Long Term Care inTribune, KS.

He was born on November 3, 1928, in Ellis, KS to parents Frank and Regina Nemecek who have preceded him in death. He married Joyce L. Smith on M ay 22, 1948, in Sharon Springs, KS. He is survived by his children Trudy and John Thorburn, Buffalo, WY, Brent and Beth Nemechek, Tribune, KS, and Blake and Carmelle Nemechek, Colorado Springs, CO, seven grandchildren, Ryan and Nicole Thorburn, Jenna Thorburn, Amy and Pete Michalczyk, Rhett Thorburn, Nick and Jenifer Nemechek, Andrew Nemechek, Cody Nemechek and eight great grandchildren, Madelyn, Gabrielle, Addison, Hayden, Peyton, Rylee, Harper and Hadley.

Preceding him in death also were his sisters; Rose Martino, Mary Blackburn, and brothers; Joe, Frank and Ernest Nemechek.

Bernie was a long time business man in Tribune, KS. He owned and operated Southside Service and retired to Sun City, Arizona where he a Joyce lived for many years. Following a long and wonderful retirement in Arizona, Bernie and Joyce decided to return to Tribune due to declining health. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sun City and the United Methodist Church in Tribune. He volunteered for his church as well as many Sun City community projects.

Bernie will be laid to rest on November 4, 2019 in the Greeley County Cemetery following graveside services at 11:00 AM MT.
