Share Your Story for a $50 Holiday Giveaway: The Joan Jerkovich Show

The Holiday Season is a time for reflecting on what we have to be grateful for, but it is also a time for giving to those in need.

Last year, for my Christmas Radio Program, I gave $50 to several of my co-workers to go out in to the community as Secret Santa’s.  They were to randomly find someone to give the money to, then come on the air with me to tell their story of giving.  They took their roles as “Secret Santa” very seriously.

It was a heartwarming show to hear of the gratitude expressed by the people who received the random gifts, but also for how it touched my co-workers to be able to give.

This year, I am giving my blog followers the chance to be

My “Secret Santa’s”!

The Joan Jerkovich Show is giving away $50 to 3 people in need

Link to the website www.joanjerkovich.com and share your personal story of need, or nominate someone who needs a helping hand during this Holiday. The Show Producers will choose the winners of the giveaway.  We will be watching how many Facebook likes, or thumbs up your submission gets in making our decision on who will get the $50 Secret Santa gift.  Let’s join together to spread Holiday Cheer to those in need!

Christmas Gifts

By Tom Wilbur

This may be the shortest op-ed piece you’ll ever read. And maybe the most important.

Do justice.

Express kindness.

Show gratitude.

Live with humility.

Be a person of integrity.

Demonstrate love.

Show God favor.

These are the greatest gifts you can give this Christmas, and every day, for that matter. They aren’t available at a department store. There’s no coupon required, and no layaway plan. They come from inside. Wrap them up with a dose of warmth, compassion, empathy, and enthusiasm, and share them with everyone you meet. Oh yeah, and put a little hug on the end. It will do you no harm.

We can change the world, for the better—you and I.

Hope to see you in church, as we celebrate the real reason for the season.

Blessings,

tw

America’s Debt: No Laughing Matter

By: Rep. Tim Huelskamp-R

“Are you kidding me?”

That was all I could think to myself when I heard that U.S. Treasury Secretary Geithner said that the U.S. “absolutely” should get rid of the debt ceiling, which is the limit on federal government borrowing.

Having served in Congress for two years now I thought that I had heard it all from the Obama Administration, but it appears they have not run out of senseless ideas. At a time when America is more than $16 trillion in debt – an amount about equivalent to the size of our entire economy – the last thing we need is to remove the cap on America’s credit card.

Two years before becoming President, then-Senator Barack Obama declared it “unpatriotic” to raise the debt limit. It was probably one of the few times we have been or ever will be on the same page. Yet, as we come to the conclusion of his first term as President, present and future taxpayers are on the hook for $6 trillion more debt and are likely to be responsible for at least $4 trillion more come the end of his second term.

Despite the $6 trillion more debt in his first term, the Obama Administration will come to Congress in a matter of weeks and ask that we raise the debt limit. Or, apparently as Secretary Geithner has suggested, get rid of it altogether.
The unfortunate reality is that Congress will have to raise the debt limit. That is what happens when Washington borrows 40 percent of what it spends. But, this time the conditions have to be different.

Another deal like the one that was cut by Republicans and Democrats in August 2011 cannot be on the table. Sixteen months after that arrangement, Washington has almost exhausted all of the borrowing, but has not a single cut yet to show for it. The cuts are set to take place on January 1, 2013, but the odds are high that lawmakers on both sides of the aisle will find a way to finagle out of them.

As it was 16 months ago, the problem in Washington is not that we do not take in enough money. No, the problem is still that we spend too much. Perhaps I sound like a broken record writing that month after month, but Congress and the President have yet to deal with the out-of-control spending.

Voters may have sent mixed messages to Washington by re-electing a Democrat President with a slim 51-percent margin and a Republican-controlled House (where the Constitution prescribes all revenue bills must originate), but exit polls from on Election Day show a pretty clear mandate on the policy direction of Washington: it is time to tackle spending.

Nearly two-thirds of voters said “no” to raising taxes to fix the deficit (meaning spending cuts are the way to go), and by an eight-point margin voters said “government is doing too many things better left to businesses and individuals” rather than “government should do more to solve problems.” Americans are not looking for higher taxes and more government; they are looking for less of both.

If the next “debt deal” is anything like the last – guaranteed debt, uncertain spending cuts – I will again ask: “Are you kidding me?” After all, more debt and more spending is no laughing matter.

America’s Farm Bill Is Worth Doing Right

By Bob Stallman, president, American Farm Bureau Federation

An old proverb states that a job worth doing is a job worth doing well. Our farm bill and all it offers our nation as an engine for commerce, a safety net for all Americans facing economic hardship and as a spur to greater environmental stewardship is a task worth doing right. Make no mistake, whether the 112th Congress completes this job in the form of a bipartisan comprehensive five-year plan or simply kicks the can down the road with a stop-gap extension, its handling of the farm bill process will likely help decide its legacy and the future of our food system.

Time is running short and clearly there is no lack of big-ticket items that need to be addressed in this lame duck session. Some pundits pontificate that consideration of the farm bill could easily be postponed for consideration next year. But, it is certain that Congress must either pass the pending farm bill or some type of extension before the recess, or accept the fact that outdated farm policies put in place more than 70 years ago will begin impacting families all across America. That’s right; unless Congress acts quickly, much of our farm policy will revert back to laws passed in the 1930s and 40s.

Since some crops were not covered under the Depression-era farm laws, an extension bill would not manage many of the risks associated with drought, market volatility or geopolitical strife. Other crops would needlessly be supported at three to four times the current level. The bottom line is that reverting to those old laws not only impacts agriculture, a sector that has performed well during our nation’s economic crisis, but will impact consumers and taxpayers at a time when fiscal constraint is needed to rein in our federal budget deficit.

From my perspective, passage of a five-year comprehensive bill would be much easier than only attempting an extension of current law. An extension bill only raises more questions than it answers. Like, will farmers and their lenders continue to have the same assurances for the coming year as they have had the last five years or do they need to plan for changes? Will those changes look like what Congress and farmers have been working on for the last several years or just reductions in what has been in place? For our nation’s dairy farmers, will they have to continue without the Milk Income Loss Contract program, as they are now? What about all of the livestock farmers that were devastated by the drought and have not been eligible for any disaster assistance?

Why is this important? Over the last two years, but especially this year, livestock farmers have suffered tremendous losses due to drought. Disaster programs that would have helped them expired in 2011. Many fruit growers lost their entire crop this past year because of a late freeze and other farms have been damaged by natural disasters including Hurricane Sandy. In the absence of a real farm bill how will Congress address disaster coverage for livestock and other farmers?

Farmers are proud stewards of the land and our vital natural resources, but Congress’ failure to act has put a stop to many important environmental efforts and planning. What will the Conservation title look like? Both the Wetlands Reserve Program and the Grassland Reserve Program have expired. There are other conservation programs expiring as well.

The bottom line is that there will be much debate on how many programs will be extended, how many will be left on the cutting room floor and where the funding will come from to pay for those extensions. But, when it comes to the food system of our country as well as consumers’ and taxpayers’ pocketbooks to help pay for that food system, isn’t the farm bill worth doing right?

Stallman, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, is a rice and cattle farmer from Columbus, Texas.

Strained Family Holiday Relationships: Joan Jerkovich

It’s that time of year when we get thrown together with those family members we don’t get along with, or worse, would be happy to avoid seeing altogether.

  • The drinker who imbibes too much to the embarrassment of all.
  • The politico who likes to argue his point until everyone is frustrated.
  • The jokester whose jokes always poke fun at someone else.
  • The pill popper who sits in the corner glassy eyed and disengaged.
  • The newly widowed or divorced who are struggling to make it through their first holiday alone.
  • The drama king or queen who can always be expected to stir the pot and get people riled up.
  • The unexpected angry outburst that leaves those involved fuming, and those who are not, wishing they could leave.
  • The stress of being in the same room with the family member you have been avoiding all year.

The combination of challenging holiday scenarios is unlimited and we’ve all found ourselves in these situations.

Would you like to talk with me about strained family holidays?                       Join my Live Chat!  Details below.

So how do you brace for the onslaught of uncomfortable interactions and emotions during the Holidays?

  • Plan ahead for what you will say to that challenging person to avoid a confrontation.
  • Repeat a calming mantra in your head.
  • When you feel yourself getting triggered, focus on your breathing.
  • Embrace your personal power by maintaining your dignity and keeping your cool.
  • Honor yourself by setting reasonable boundaries; such as not allowing personal attacks.
  • Take the high road by apologizing or holding out the olive branch for peace (if only for the day).
  • Monitor your own behavior, don’t drink too much, choose your words thoughtfully.
  • If you feel provoked, disengage or walk away.  A family holiday is not the time to work on a relationship.
  • If need be, be courteous to the person who triggers you, but keep your distance.
  • Place your focus on the family members you cherish and enjoy your time with them.
  • Accept what is and what you can’t change.

Truth is, the holidays may not always be the postcard picture of happy.  Instead, they are a chance to rise above your relationship issues to find the silver lining of personal growth.

OPINION: A Sustainable Response to Senator Moran’s Election Message

By Richard D. Fry

I received a pre-election message from Kansas Senator Jerry Moran. What is Jerry’s big message?

“While it seems like every election is the “most important”, I truly believe that tomorrow will profoundly define the America we leave to our children and grandchildren…. the future of our nation is at stake. With 23 million Americans out of work, it seems clear we need new leadership…. Let’s restore prosperity.”

Jerry you cannot have lasting “prosperity” without individual Liberty. That was the conclusion of the great experiment of our Founding Fathers / Framers of the Constitution. It has resulted in historically unparalleled Liberty of any people being visited upon the American people and has led to the unparalleled prosperity of any nation being visited upon America.

The foundation of such Liberty is that Liberty was given to the people by God and is unalienable which means the people are the sovereign and the government is a mere servant of the people.

During his tenure in Congress Jerry has helped to undercut the very foundation of our Liberty and therefore our prosperity. Sometimes he has done so subtly such as by voting for one Farm Bill after another which contained elements of the UN’s Sustainable Development theory / Agenda 21 (A21), other times it has been more apparent such as with the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2012.

Senator Moran’s Support for UN’s Sustainable Development

Recently, Senator Moran publicly chastised the Secretary of Agriculture for promoting “meatless Monday.” “Meatless Monday” is part and parcel of Sustainable Development which Sen. Moran has been voting for and authorizing funding of since he has been in Congress.

One example of such is the hundreds of millions of dollars Jerry authorized the Department of Agriculture (USDA) to spend to do flatulence studies (called the “fart studies” by some.) This started around 2001 – 2002. Such studies were the subject of a Saturday Night Live skit in 2003 and made Sen. Tom Coburn’s infamous list of the top 100 most wasteful federal projects at least once. These “studies” are still going on here and abroad.

These studies are based on the long since refuted theory of ‘Anthropogenic Global Warming’ i.e., the assertion that we are experiencing “global warming” and it is manmade. The UN has asserted that animal flatulence causes more “greenhouse gases” (the cause of “global warming”) than all the cars and buses and planes etc. combined.

According to the UN, global warming is an infliction by the western world upon the rest of the world due to the west’s greed in promoting the advancement of mankind over the environment. Such things as air conditioning, burning of fossil fuels, private ownership of land and yes eating meat are some of the indulgences of the western world the environment (and rest of the world) can no longer sustain.

Make no mistake about it Senator Pat Robert’s has been no better.

Senator Moran’s support for NDAA

A more obvious attack on our Liberty has been Sen. Moran’s support for the NDAA.

NDAA under cuts over a dozen provisions of the Constitution and Bill of Rights which relates directly to our personal Liberty. It allows the President (executive branch) based on a mere suspicion (less than is required for an arrest warrant) to “capture” a U.S. citizen, including in the United States, and hold them indefinitely without allowing them to talk to an attorney (or family), without a jury trial, without being allowed to see evidence against them or to confront witnesses’ against them. It even allows the government to turn such citizens over to a foreign government or to a “foreign entity” such as Interpol, a UN affiliate. NDAA is a “no fly list” supersized and placed on steroids.

(Currently some are objecting because the UN is sending in election monitors to oversee voting in the U.S. The UN is concerned about such requirements as states requiring photo ids. This is nothing compared to what is authorized in the NDAA.)

Unlike Sen. Roberts and Congresspersons Yoder, Pompeo and Jenkins who voted for this horrendous bill, Moran skipped the actual vote. This tells us something since he has something of a reputation for skipping out on tough votes.

There is an adage at law which says “those who do not object acquiesce” and this is especially true if they have a duty to speak out against something. Under Article VI of the Constitution Sen. Moran has a duty to protect the Constitution. This is an active and affirmative duty. This duty includes the requirement he tells his constituents (his bosses) of any attack on the Constitution and their Liberty and undertakes action to stop such attack.

Sen. Moran has failed miserably in his duty to the Constitution and the citizens of Kansas as it relates to the NDAA.

Some will say that Sen. Roberts and Congresspersons Pompeo, Yoder and Jenkins have likewise failed.

Yes they are right they all failed. But, their duty to the Constitution is personal. None of them get off the hook because one or more of the others violated their personal duty and oath to the Constitution. I am not holding up for these other usurpers of Liberty, I am simply pointing out the hypocrisy of Sen. Moran’s election message.

Don’t forget your duty to call these “public servants” out on this grave breach of their duty. Don’t drink Sen. Moran’s Kool–Aid and remain one of his “kids.” As he says such will “profoundly define the America we leave to our children and grandchildren…”

P.S. Only Congressman Huelskamp voted against the NDAA and has continued to try to correct its unconstitutional provisions. You might send him a letter of thanks on behalf of your kids.

Twinkies May Survive

Twinkie lovers, relax.

The tasty cream-filled golden spongecakes are likely to survive, even though their maker will be sold in bankruptcy court.

Hostess Brands Inc., baker of Wonder Bread as well as Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Ho Ho’s, will be in a New York bankruptcy courtroom Monday to start the process of selling itself.

The company, weighed down by debt, management turmoil, rising labor costs and the changing tastes of America, decided on Friday that it no longer could make it through a conventional Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring. Instead, it’s asking the court for permission to sell assets and go out of business.

But with high brand recognition and $2.5 billion in annual revenue, other companies are interested in bidding for at least pieces of Hostess.

Screw-In Coffin? Is This Weird?

Would you like to be screwed into the ground instead of buried?

If you answered “Yes” or “What?” then you may want to check out what Donald Scruggs has to offer.

Donald Scruggs is featured on a new PBS series called “Inventors” and has invented a screw-in coffin. It is essentially a lag bolt, 8 feet tall and hollow. The body is placed vertically in the tube, and the coffin is then screwed into the ground. The top of the screw serves as a headstone. Scruggs acknowledges being buried vertically in a coffin that screws into the ground is not for everyone, but he does think his interment invention could save money and make better use of space than traditional burial.

Check out the video below to see Donald and his Screw-In Coffin.

Plan Now for Winter Weather

The Kansas Division of Emergency Management, in conjunction with county emergency management officials across the state, urge Kansans to take a few minutes to prepare for winter this week. This year, Winter Weather Awareness Day is Wednesday, Nov. 14. It is designated to remind Kansans of the potential hazards associated with winter weather and the actions everyone can take to have a safer winter.

“The best time to plan for freezing temperatures, snow and ice is now,” said Maj. Gen. Lee Tafanelli, director of the Kansas Division of Emergency Management and adjutant general.
A vehicle emergency kit should consist of blankets, flashlights, batteries, a cell phone charger, hand-warmers, high-energy food snacks, bottled water, necessary medications, a snow shovel, flares and other emergency supplies. Additional vehicle preparations recommended include winterizing your car by checking tires and anti-freeze levels, and never letting your vehicle’s gas tank fall below a quarter tank because road conditions may slow down your travel or leave you stranded with no gas and no access to heat.
“It’s also important to restock your home emergency kit with the essentials needed when power is out, temperatures are frigid and roads are impassable,” Tafanelli added. Be prepared to be without power for at least three days by assembling a home emergency kit with emergency supplies for every member of the family: bottled water, non-perishable foods, flashlights, batteries, blankets, medications, children’s games and pet food.

For a complete list of items for a home or car emergency kit, go to www.ksready.gov .
Winter road conditions are accessible by dialing 5-1-1 from your mobile phone or by going to the Kansas Department of Transportation web site at https://511.www.ksdot.org/.

OPINION: The Metamorphosis Of The USA

By John Fedele

Darwin be danged! The USA is not evolving, it is in a state of metamorphosis.

The re-election of Obama did not prove the nation is evolving in its thinking. It proved the nation is metamorphosing into a different entity.

We are no longer a nation founded on White Anglo Saxon, Judaeo-Christian, philosophy and history. We have become a rainbow of color and ethnicities. People, coming to America to be free has resulted in the creation of a populace of immigrants whose social and economic philosophies differ from those immigrants of the early 20th century… the European influx.

The election did not prove Obama’s leadership and policies are good for the future of the country. It proved he said the right things and promised the right things to the new immigrants, who just happen to reside in those states where there were a lot of electorial votes.

The future of the USA will depend on how long it takes the “new” Americans to figure out that working for a living is better than depending on the government to care for them. The truth of the matter is that eventually the White Anglo Saxon Judaeo Christain population, who are the economic machine of today, will soon fade away. Then what?

OPINION: A Biased Press

By John Fedele

The past few days the Salina Journal has come out of the closet and revealed itself as a left wing bias newspaper. There is nothing wrong with the paper stating opinions and endorsing candidates, in fact, it is part of the election process. What is discouraging, is that the Journal only opines one side and only endorses one party. Fair and balanced has disappeared.

Sundays endorsement of Obama for a 2nd term consisted of the mass media rehash of the campaign from the Obama camp. Their attempt at “balance” was to say Obama didn’t keep some promises and then listed two which really have little to do with the mess the country is in. They never listed the other promises he did not keep…lower deficit, unemployment.

They did not list the waste of money on “green” energy and jobs, in fact they praised the effort, a bailout that will not be paid back to the taxpayers while robbing those who should have received money from the sale of the company, nor did they mention ‘Fast and Furious’ or the Benghazi affair.

Seems the Salina Journal is a victim of the mass media’s selective reporting. Like the old 333 line and the Sound off line, the Journal is hiding behind an alias…The Journal Staff..Just who are these folk?

OPINION: Word Abuse – Love and Hate Get All Mixed Up

By Ron Bowell

“It’s a beautiful thing, the destruction of words… if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.” — George Orwell in 1984

Words are meaningful only as long as there is common agreement about what they mean. When the meaning of words is lost, what results is the confusing gibberish of biblical Babel. When words are regularly distorted, communication breaks down and we end up with an exchange of propaganda rather than true discourse.

“Love” and “Hate” are two words that have been extensively abused in recent years. Both have been so cheapened by casual and careless use, they have become almost meaningless. That’s why it’s not really helpful to have these two words being thrown around like grenades in Salina’s LGBT ordinance debate.

Those who favor the ordinance maintain that it’s about love… that if one was really “loving”, they would embrace the LGBT ordinance. Even some who carry Christ’s name say Jesus would favor the ordinance because of his “love” for all people.

It then becomes logical and permissible to believe that those in favor of repealing the ordinance must be sub-human people of “hate”. Hence, the continuous barrage of “hater” comments lobbed at those in opposition to the City Commission’s action. It matters not that many of those who are opposed actually know and dearly love people who are LGBT. Judgment has been pronounced. If you’re opposed, you’re a “hater”.

These distortions of the words “love” and “hate” are prime examples of the “Babelization” of our language. “Love” and “Hate” have mutated to the point that they are almost meaningless.

Consider the word “Love”. If you had an earthly father who loved you, did you expect him to always approve your every action? Sane folks would answer, “No!” Permissiveness is not the same as love. In reality, love has boundaries or it is not genuine love. Parents who “love” their children, sometimes say “No”, and it’s not seen as “hate”.

God is the same. The Father’s discipline comes along with His love. When God tells us, “No”, it’s not because he hates us. It’s because he loves us. God is more interested in our wellbeing than He is in granting our every desire.

The Father made his will clear on the topic of sexuality. Nowhere does God ever say, “Yes”, to the behaviors associated with the LGBT lifestyle. Is this because God “hates” people? No! God loves us, but his love has never included His saying “yes” to everything we want to do. Saying “no” is not “hate” and in fact, may be love at its highest and best.

Jesus loved all people, but he never balked at telling them, “No”. To the woman caught in adultery, he said, “I don’t condemn you.” Everyone seems to know that part of the story. But, that’s not all he said. He also told her, “Stop this behavior. Stop sinning.” Was Jesus a “hater” because he corrected her? No! Jesus was the epitome of love. Still, he said, “No”, many times. The phrase, “Do not”, is found in the majority of the ten commandments. Are they “hateful”?

Many of us have learned how to love addicted family or friends without providing drugs for them or blessing their lifestyle. We are not “haters” when we tell them, “No!” We don’t have to agree with them or support their lifestyle in order to love them.

So, we can love people who are LGBT, but not be in favor of Salina’s overly intrusive city ordinance. And that’s the main problem with this ordinance. It’s coercive, especially for churches. It’s guaranteed to have a host of unintended consequences. There is just too much bad stuff mixed in with the good stuff.

Voting “Yes” to repeal the ordinance does not mean we “hate” anyone. That’s as silly as saying that every person who votes for Romney is a racist. The issue is more complex than that. There are many different reasons a person might vote yes to repeal. So, let’s drop the “hate” rhetoric.

Are there people who hate? Absolutely! If you don’t believe it, you should read some of my mail. “Haters” are found on both sides of any issue. But, loving people can vote “Yes” to repeal this ordinance. Anyone who claims otherwise has distorted both the words, “love” and hate”. They have arrived at Orwell’s “1984”, twenty eight years late.

Taliban Targets Assassination Survivor

The Taliban has vowed to finish the job they started.

On October 9, 2012, a Taliban assassin got on the school bus and, calling her by name, shot Malala Yousufzai, a14 year old Pakistani schoolgirl.  Malala was an outspoken advocate for the rights of girls to receive an education.  Her activism, which began in 2009 when she was 11 years old, made her a target of the Taliban.

One of the assassins bullets grazed  Malala’s skull, chipping the bone, but miraculously it did not penetrate her brain.  Malala was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, England, where she is expected to make a full recovery.

As reported by Nick Schifrin on October 26, 2012 for ABC news, her parents and two brothers traveled from Pakistan to visit with her for the first time since the shooting.   They called her survival a “miracle.”

Her father, Ziauddin Yousufzai thanked the world for “supporting the cause for which she stands:  peace and education.”  He called her shooter “an agent of Satan – but I found angels on my side.”

“When she fell, Pakistan stood.  And this is a turning point,” he said.  “She will rise again, she will stand again.  She can stand now.”

Pakistan stood, as did citizens world wide in support of Malala.
