Hays High Playoff Bound!

The Hays High Indians had one mission in mind heading to Salina on Friday night…WIN!  By one or thirty the result would be the same, a trip to the 5A playoffs.

Hays would trail after one quarter 2-0 after David Cardinal was sacked for a safety.  The Indians kept Salina Central from taking a two possession lead thanks to a Derek Bixenman interception allowing Hays to finally pull to the lead in the second quarter with a David Cardinal one yard touchdown run capping off a 10 play, 80 yard, 4:22 drive.  Hays failed to convert on the two point conversion leaving the score at 6-2.

Hays took a 12-2 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the first half on a Alex Delton seven yard touchdown over the right side capping off a 78 yard, 4:15 drive.  Hays again came up short on the two point conversion and led 12-2 at half time.

Each team failed to score in the third quarter and then the fourth quarter got just plain wacky.

Central looked to be getting back into the game driving to the Hays 14 yard line, but an offensive pass interference call and a ten yard sack set up 3rd and 34 for the Mustangs who threw an incomplete pass and then on fourth down threw a pass for only 19 of the needed 34 yards.

Hays took off after the defensive stop driving down to the three yard line, but lost their third fumble of the game at the half yard line.  Central advanced the ball only to the nine yard line before turning the ball over on downs again.  The Indians couldn’t punch the ball in though and after losing eight yards on the drive but Lane Clark booted a 33 yard field goal for a 15-2 lead.

Central put their only touchdown on the board with :19 left on a 35 yard run by quarterback Mark Vaughn moving the score to 15-9.

Central would have three opportunities on the ensuing onside kick.  On the first attempt the Mustangs were called for an offsides penalty.  The following kick Central was flagged for delay of game.  Finally on the third the ball went 9 and 3/4 yards before being touched by a Mustang allowing Hays High to take over and taking one knee for the 15-9 victory.

Hays moves to 7-2 overall, Salina Central drops to 3-6.

For Hays High, the Indians move on to the 5A state playoffs for a second consecutive year.  Hays will play at Bishop Carroll on Friday.

HHS, TMP Boys Soccer Fall in Regional Opener

The soccer seasons for both Hays High and TMP-Marian came to and end Tuesday night with first round regional losses.

Hays fell to Liberal 2-0. The defending state champs scored five minutes in to the second half then again with five minutes to play. The Indians end their season 6-9-2.

TMP-Marian gave No. 3 seed Rose Hill a test but lost 2-1. The Monarchs finish their season at 4-12.

TMP Falls to Scott City

The TMP-Marian Monarchs were shutout in Scott City on Friday night, 58-0.  Things started off on the wrong foot for the Monarchs as Scott City scored on their opening play from scrimmage on a 80 yard touchdown run and the rout was on.  The Beavers would score 3 more touchdowns in the first quarter and led 46-0 at halftime.

The second half wasn’t much better as Scott City used a running clock and scored 2 more touchdowns, putting the game away.  The longest play on the night for TMP was a 7 yard throw and catch from Shane Zimmerman to Taylor Wasinger which resulted in the only first down of the game for the Monarchs.  Garrett Stoecklein had the longest run, a 4 yard carry late in the 4th Quarter.

The loss drops TMP to 2-6 overall and 1-1 in Class 3A, District 15 play while Scott City improves to  8-0 overall and 2-0 in District Play.  TMP will be at home on Thursday night to take on Hoisington with the winner going to the 3A State Playoffs.

Hays High Defeated on Senior Night

The Hays High Indians lost of the first time since week one of the season 35-6 to the Salina South Cougars.  Both teams came in state ranked, Hays #3 and South #2.  Both teams hadn’t lost since the first week, Hays to Junction City and South to Derby.  Both teams were 1-0 in districts with a chance to win the district championship in just the second week.

The game started like everyone expected with each offense scoring early touchdowns.  Hays started the game with the ball and converted on three third downs scoring on an Alex Delton run going up 6-0 after missing the extra point.

South answered back with a 46 yard drive, converting on two fourth downs, the second going for a 16 yard TD pass.  The Cougar’s extra point put them up 7-6.

However, Hays could never answer the bell again and in fact would score again losing 35-6.

The back breaker came just before half time when the Indians turned the ball over on down on a dropped pass.  South drove the field and scored with no time left on the clock going up 21-6 at half time.

Hays mustered just 147 yards of offense.  South feasted on great field position all night and despite the 35 points had just 283 yards of offense.

The Indians drop to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in district play.  South is 7-1 and 2-0 in district play.

South wins the district via a Salina Central 20-13 win over Great Bend.

Hays can still make the playoffs with a win over Salina Central next week….if Central wins they go to the playoffs.

Hays High Claims WAC Title, Defeats Great Bend

When the Hays High Indians and Great Bend Panthers get together for a football game you are assured that there will be good football and Friday night was no different.

On the line was the WAC Championship, bragging rights, and oh ya it was the first game of district play as well.

Hays took all of the above in a 31-13 win moving to 6-1 on the season and finished 4-0 in conference play.  Great Bend drops to 5-2 and finished 2-2 in the WAC.

Great Bend opened up the game with a 90 yard kick-off return for a touchdown, but holding was called bringing the six points off the board and the Panthers went three plays and punted the ball.  Hays scored on their first possession of the game on a 10 play 66 yard drive capped off by an Emilio Mitchell five yard touchdown run.  Hays led 6-0 after missing the extra point.

The two teams would trade punts and Great Bend fumbled setting Hays up with their best field position of the game and the Indians capitalized with a four play touchdown drive capped by a 32 yard touchdown pass from Alex Delton to Adam Deterding, their ninth touchdown hook up this season.  Hays would fail to convert the two point conversion and lead 12-0.

After a Great Bend punt, Delton threw just his second interception of the season setting up Great Bend for a three play 48 yard drive and an extra point closing the gap to 12-7.

Hays would get one more crack at offense to close the half and score with just ten seconds left on a 40 yard Delton touchdown pass to David Cardinal.  Hays again failed to convert the two point conversion for a 18-7 half time lead.

Hays started the second half with the ball and drove 92 yards on 10 plays burning 5:49 off the third quarter clock again scoring on a touchdown pass from Delton to Cardinal this time for 55 yards.  The Indians converted on three third downs in that drive alone.  Lane Clark’s extra point made the score 25-7.

Great Bend though answered right back in just :50 scoring on a Bryce Beck 21 yard scamper.  Adam Deterding blocked the extra point leaving the score at 25-13.

The two teams then would trade fumbles, then punts until Hays orchestrated a four play 58 yard drive Great Bend turned the ball over on downs, the point extra was never attempted after a low snap forced a pass that was knocked down for the final score of 31-13.

Great Bend did drive to the Hays High four yard line having first and goal, but failed to score, giving the Indians the maximum 13 points allowed in a district win.  The points matter if a tie needs to be broken.

Hays piles up 406 yards total.  279 yards on the ground and 127 through the air.  David Cardinal ran 33 times for 173 yards and one touchdown.  Alex Delton was 3-6, 127 yards, 3 TDs and 1 INT.  Adam Deterding caught a touchdown pass and David Cardinal caught two touchdowns.

Hays gets Salina South who won in over time against crosstown rival Salina Central next week.  Both teams are 1-0 in district play.  It will be senior night for the Hays Indians.
