Ness City Eagles Fall in First Round at Manhattan

A year after falling in the first round of the 2A state tournament in Manhattan, the Ness City Eagles made the trip back to state looking to better last season’s performance. The Eagles, at 20-3 matched up with the Madison/Hamilton Bulldogs who were also 20-3, in the four vs. five game.

After opening with a pair of Collin Foos free throws, the Eagles led 2-0. Madison answered back with a 6-0 run to lead 6-2. Dalton Gantz gave the Eagles a 9-8 lead with a three-pointer, Gantz poured in seven of his 10 points in the first quarter. The Bulldogs finished the first quarter on a 6-2 run and led 17-13 after one.

Madison opened the second quarter with a 19-13 lead; six would be the largest lead of the game. Madison led 21-15 before the Eagles came streaking back, putting together a 6-0 run to take a 22-21 lead behind four points from Wyatt Beckman. The two teams traded the lead to end the second quarter before Madison’s Tyler Williams scored his ninth point of the game giving Madison a 25-24 halftime lead.

The Eagles opened the second half on a 9-2 run and took their largest lead of the game at 33-28. Beckman and Collin Foos combined for eight points giving the Eagles a 34-33 lead after three quarters. After outscoring the Bulldogs in the second and third quarters the Eagles jumped out to a 38-35 lead to begin the fourth quarter, but that would be the last time the Eagles would lead in the game.

Madison’s leading scorer Tyler Williams pulled down three offensive rebounds in the final period and poured in 14 of his game-high 25 points helping the Bulldogs outscore the Eagles 14-9 in the fourth quarter as Madison picked up the 47-43 win.

Wyatt Beckman was six-of-eight from the free throw line and had a team high 12 points for the Ness City Eagles. Collin Foos chipped in 10 points and six rebounds and Drew Clarke pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. Ness City’s season comes to an end at 20-4.

Ness City and Oakley win 2A Ellis Sub-State

Both championship games from the class 2A sub-state in Ellis featured the number one seed versus number two. In the girl’s game it was a NWKL matchup between the Oakley lady Plainsmen and the Rawlins County Lady Buffaloes.

Rawlins County jumped out to an early 6-2 lead behind Hillary Chavatal who scored the first six points for Rawlins County. Oakley answered back with a 5-0 run of their own and took a 7-5 lead. With the game tied at nine Oakley went on a 6-2 run and built their lead to 16-15 after the first quarter . Oakley’s Laura Dennis had six first quarter points and Rawlins County’s Hillary Chavatal scored 12 of her game-high 24 in the first quarter. Marlee Rath hit a three-pointer and helped Oakley answer back with a 9-2 run and lead 40-33. Rawlins County cut the lead to 43-39 after three quarters and that would be the closest the Lady Buffs would get. Oakley closed out the fourth quarter outscoring Rawlins County 10-2 and picked up the 53-41 win.

Rawlins County’s Hillary Chavatal led all scorers with 24 . Oakley’s Laura Dennis scored a team-high 16 points, Brooke Hemmert added 14 and Carrie Pilkington had 10. Oakley improved to 18-5 and will play at the 2A state tournament in Manhattan next week while Rawlins County finished their season 16-7.

The boys championship game would come down to the final shot between the Plainville Cardinals and the Ness City Eagles. The top seed Cardinals started the game on a 9-2 run behind four points from Jameson Klein who scored seven in the first quarter. Ness City would hang around because of the play of Collin Foos. Foos had nine points in the first quarter and Plainville led 14-12 after the first quarter.

Ness City scored the first five points of the second quarter and took a 15-14 lead. Ness City extended their lead to 22-18 before Plainville forced back-to-back turnovers that led to Kyle Becker layups that kicked off a 6-0 run that gave the Cards a 24-22 lead. After four lead changes to close out the first half Ness City led 30-28.

Ness City began the third quarter on a 12-2 run sparked by a Dalton Gantz three-pointer, he hit three in the game and finished with nine points, as the Eagles lead grew to their largest lead of the game at 12. Plainville closed the quarter on a 6-0 run, four coming from Hadley Gillum, and the Cards trailed 42-36. After Ness City went back up by six, at 44-36 to begin the fourth quarter Plainville stormed back and took a 45-44 lead as Hadley Gillum scored six in the fourth quarter to finish with 12 points. Ness City answered with a Collin Foos layup and a Drew Clarke three-pointer to take a 50-45 lead. Plainville regained the lead with a 6-0 run to lead 51-50. Collin Foos then gave Ness City the lead with a pair of free throws, at 52-51. Ness City’s lead grew to 54-51 in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter before Plainville’s Jameson Klein complete on a three-point lead to close within one at 54-53. Plainville sent Ness City’s Koltyn Ratliff to the line for a one-and-one and he missed the front end. Plainville’s Kyle Becker rushed down the floor and put up a shot as time expired that came up short giving Ness City the 54-53 win.

A Loss in the Sub-State Title Game Ends the Season for TMP Girls

The Thomas More Prep – Marian girls’ basketball team was denied a third-straight trip to the Class 3A State Tournament on Saturday night when they lost to Beloit 52-40.

The Lady Monarchs were the #1 seed in the Lyons Sub-State but the Lady Trojans earned their trip to Hutchinson by outscoring TMP 31-13 in the second half of the sub-state championship game.

Beloit, the #3 seed in the bracket, started the game with a 7-2 lead before TMP started to take control of the first half. With the help of 12 first half points from Rachel Jacobs, the Lady Monarchs took a 27-21 lead into halftime. Jacobs finished the night with 20 points and ended her career at TMP-Marian with 1,468 points (school record).

TMP’s second-leading scorer, Jenna Lang, battled with foul trouble for the second straight night. The Lady Monarchs struggled to keep afloat against Beloit (17-6) in the second half with her on the bench.

TMP held a two-point lead at the end of the third quarter but Beloit attacked inside at the beginning of the final period. Beloit went on to score the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to seize control of the game.

The Lady Trojans’ Olivia Marozas scored nine of her 19 points in the final eight minutes. TMP had no answer for Marozas and Cami Engelbert in the paint in the second half. Englebert ended the night going 7-for-7 from the free throw line and had 14 points.

Lang and Heather Ruder who both average 12.5 points per game were held in check on Saturday. Lang had seven points while Ruder added just six.

TMP’s 12-game winning streak comes to an end with the loss as does the prep careers for Jacobs, Lang, Allison Marsell, and Rebecca Pray.

Plainville and Ness City boys Earned Semifinals Wins

The top two seeds on the boy’s side advanced to the sub-state Championship game with semifinal wins on Friday night. In the first game of the night the two seed, Ness City took on the three seed Hill City.

Hill City jumped out to a 5-3 lead after Matt Craig a three-pointer and they led 7-5 but that would be their only lead of the game. Ness City finished the first quarter on an 11-2 run behind four from Colin Foos and Drew Clarke and they led 16-10 after the first quarter. The second quarter was more of the same for the Eagles. Drew Clarke hit two three-points and Colin Foos added four more points as Ness City outscored Hill City 19-8 in the second quarter and led 35-18 at halftime.

Hill City came out swinging in the second half cutting the deficit to 10 at 44-34, hitting their first five field goal attempts in the quarter. But Ness City Dalton Gantz hit his second three of the night and Drew Clarke added seven more in the third quarter and Ness City led 51-34 after three.

Hill City began the fourth quarter on a 9-2 led by three-pointers from Matt Craig and Solomon Wilson and they cut the Eagle lead to 53-45. But in the end the Ness City attack was just too much as they earned the 65-53 victory.

Ness City’s Drew Clarke led all scorers with 22 points, Collin Foos added 13 and Koltyn Ratliff and Tucker VonLehe both chipped in nine. Hill City’s Matt Craig finished with 19 points, Adam Pfeifer had 11 and Solomon Wilson added nine before fouling out.

Hill City’s season comes to an end with a 17-6 record while the Ness City Eagles are 19-3 and they will take on the Plainville Cardinals in the sub-state Championship game Saturday night in Ellis.

In the second game of the night the Plainville Cardinals proved to be too much for the Ellis Railroaders. Plainville’s Andrew Casey scored five of the first seven points as the Cardinals jumped out to a 7-2 first quarter lead. Ellis close the gap to 13-7 on a Luke Lohrmeyer layup and free throw but that was a close as they would get the rest of the way. Plainville used a 24-8 run to end the first quarter and the entire second quarter to take a 35-15 lead at halftime. The second half was more of the same for Plainville in the second half as Plainville cruised to a 63-38 win.

Plainville’s Andrew Casey led all scorers with 19 points, Hadley Gillum added 11 points and Nolan Weiser had 10. Cole Pfeifer led the Railers with 13 points and Luke Lohrmeyer finished with six points.

TMP Girls Beat Russell in the Sub-State Semifinals

The girls’ basketball team from Thomas More Prep – Marian was able to overcome an 11-point halftime deficit to Russell Friday night and get a 58-49 win in the semifinals of the Class 3A Lyons Sub-State.

The Lady Monarchs (19-3) held a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter but then got outscored in the second period 16-4.

What made things worse for TMP was the problem of Jenna Lang (TMP’s second-leading scorer) committing four fouls in the second quarter. With Lang on the bench to start the second half, Russell (15-7) took a 32-20 lead with a bucket from Janna Schulte. At that point the Lady Monarchs went on a 14-1 run to regain the lead after a 3-pointer by Heather Ruder. Ruder finished the night with a game-high 21 points.

With time winding down in the third quarter, Russell’s Madison Beagley hit a 3-pointer to give the Lady Broncos a 36-34 lead going into the final quarter.

Things got really interesting in the fourth quarter when TMP’s Rachel Jacobs fouled out with over four minutes to play and TMP only leading by four points. TMP, who defeated Russell by 18 back in January, would hit enough free throws down the stretch to avoid the upset.

Jacobs, before fouling out, ended with nine points and unofficially 13 rebounds. Lang, playing the entire second half with four fouls, finished with 14 points.

TMP has now made it 12-straight wins, and advance to the championship game of the Lyons Sub-State. The Lady Monarchs will take on the Beloit Lady Trojans Saturday evening. Beloit, the #3 seed, defeated Hoisington 52-38 in the other semifinal contest. Tip-off from Lyons is set for 6 PM and our coverage will begin at 5:40 with the Fort Hays Auto Sales Pregame Show.
