Riley County wins state sand green title, La Crosse finishes third

LA CROSSE, Kan. – After being delayed for over a week and a half because of weather, the KSHSAA Sand Green championship was finally held Thursday yesterday at the La Crosse Country Club with the host Leaopards finishing in third place with a 384.. Riley County won the team title with a 349. Tipton was second 30 shots back.

Blake Herrman and Hunter Morgan both had rounds of 89 and tied for fifth place and were the only Leopards in the top-10. Kaden Barker led Tipton with a round of 90 and tied for seventh.

Chase County’s Justin Kohlman won the individual title with a 5-over-par 75.

Area golfers place at the 2A State Tournament

SALINA, Kan. – It took over a week but they were finally able to get the 2A state golf tournament completed at the Hesston Golf Course. Play started last Monday but was halted by rain. More heavy rain forced the tournament to pushed back several times before eventually being started over.

Sacred Heart out of Salina won the team title with a 313. Plainville finished fourth with a 350 and Trego was fifth at 356.

Plainville’s Tanner Copeland shot a 2-over-par 73 and finished fourth. Trego’s Dalton Mai shot a 6-over-par 77 and was part of a four-way tie for sixth but finished fourth in the playoff and came home with ninth place. Plainville’s Parker Krob shot a 7-over-par 78 and was part of a three-way tie for 10th but finished second in the playoff for 11th place.

Ellis has four named to the KABC All-State baseball team

The Ellis Railroaders had four players named to the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches 2-1A All-State team.

Sophomore Tegan Cain was a first team selection as a pitcher. Senior Talon Torline was a second team selection as a designated hitter and junior Carter Bollig was named to the second team as a third baseman. Freshman Tyson Jimenez was named to the honorable mention team.

Cain finished the season 8-1 with a 1.98 earned run average with 53 strikeouts and 11 walks in 28.1 innings. He allowed just eight earned runs (11 total) on 16 hits.

He also led the Railers in almost all offensive categories, including batting average (.508), hits (33), triples (6), homeruns (3) and RBI’s (31).

Torline and Bollig led Ellis in doubles (6). Torline hit .407 on the season with one home run, 15 RBI’s and 22 runs scored. Bollig batted .379 with 20 RBI’s and 28 runs scored.

Jimenez finished the season with a .379 batting average and tied for a team-high with 34 runs scored.

Ellis finished the season 15-4 and loss to Sedgwick in the regional championship game.

HHS has three players named to the KABC All-State baseball team

Coming off a 20-2 season, the Hays High Indians have three players named to the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches 5A All-State team. Senior pitcher Trey Riggs is a first team pick while junior Brock Lummus was named honorable mention catcher and senior Palmer Hutchison honorable mention as a utility player.

Riggs, who was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, led the Indians with 6-2 record and 1.71 earned run average this spring. He struck out 52 batters while walking only 11 in 45 innings of work.

Lummus, who was named to the All-WAC first team, was tied for the Indians team lead with two triples, was second with six doubles and tied for third with three home runs while batting .333.

Hutchison, who was also a first team All-WAC selection, led the Indians with seven doubles and was tied for the team lead with two triples while batting .403. He went 7-0 in nine starts on the mound with a 2.58 ERA. Hutchison struck out 51 while walking only 10.

Final day of state track and field meet

WICHITA – After weather delays in the first two days of the Kansas high school track and field the last few events were pushed to Sunday and the final day wouldn’t have been complete without one final weather delay. But after a brief lighting delay they were finally able to complete the last few events.

In the girls 2A 4×400 meter relay Ellis finished 6th as a team with a time of 4:18.14. Ness City was 12th.

In the 3A girls 4×4 Phillipsburg finished third with a time of 4:07.17 and TMP was 12th. The TMP boys finished seventh in the boys 4×4 with a time of 3:31.53.

The Osborne girls finished third as a team in class 1A while their boys were the highest area team in 1A in 12th place.

In class 2A the Smith Center boys finished fifth while the Ellis girls tied for fifth, Plainville was seventh.

The TMP girls finished in a tie for 12th. The TMP boys were tied for 13th.

In class 5A the Hays High girls finished 29th and the boys were 24th.

Weather forces high school state track meet to third day

WICHITA – With just a handful of events left severe weather forced officials to push the reminder of the KSHSAA State Track and Field meet to Sunday morning.

After the meet was delayed Friday morning for nearly three hours and then postponed in the afternoon they were able to get in most of the remaining events on Saturday before another round of storms moved into the Wichita area Saturday night.

In the events they were able to get in the Osborne Bulldogs won but the high hurdles races. Afftin Conway won the girls 100 meters hurdles and Darrien Holloway won the boys 110-meter hurdles. Holloway also won the 300 high hurdles.

The TMP girls finished seventh in the 3A girls 4×800 relay with a time of 10:16.76.

The TMP boys finished fourth in the boys 3A 4×800 relay with a time of 8:20.51.

Trego’s Helen Giefer claimed the title in the 2A girls 1600 meters with a time of 5:18.36.

In the girls 2A 400 meter dash Plainville’s Aubree Dewey earned a first place finish with a time of 58.31. Ellis’ Cassie Waldschmidt finished second in a time of 59.36. Waldschmidt also placed fourth in the 2A girls 200.

The TMP girls’ high jumpers all recorded a height of 5 feet. Jenna Romme finished third by tiebreaker with Kassidy Yost right behind Romme in fourth and Makinsey Schlautman finished tied for sixth.

Gavin Meyers placed third for the Hays High boys in the 5A boys javelin with a throw of 167 feet 1 inch.

Hays High’s Brooklyn Schaffer placed seventh in the 5A girls 300 low hurdles.

In class 2A Ellis’ Grace Eck placed second in the girls 800 meters.

Hays High’s Tucker Veach earned a sixth-place finish in the 5A boys pole vault clearing a height of 13 feet.

On Sunday the remaining field events will start at 10 a.m. with the running events starting at 11 a.m.

HHS lands five on the All-WAC baseball team

Led by Player of the Year Trey Riggs, the Hays High Indians placed five players on the All-Western Athletic Conference baseball team. Indians coach Frank Leo is the WAC Coach of the Year.

Hays had four named to the first team, more than any other school. Along with Riggs, fellow seniors Palmer Hutchison and Cody Petersen as well as junior Brock Lummus are on the first team with freshman Dylan Dreiling an honorable mention pick.

This is the third straight year Riggs has received all-conference recognition after going 6-2 with a 1.71 ERA on the mound while batting .400. He was tied for third on the team with three home runs.

Hutchison is all-conference for the second straight season after leading the Indians with seven doubles, was tied for the team lead in triples with two while hitting .403

Peterson was tied for the team lead with four home runs while hitting .309 and was second on the team with eight stolen bases.

Lummus was second on the team with six doubles, was tied for the team lead with two triples and tied for third with three home runs while holding a .333 batting average.

Dreiling hit .323 and was tied with Petersen with a team-high four home runs.

McCrae leads Indians to fourth place finish at 5A State Golf

DODGE CITY, Kan. – Tradgon McCrae shot a 3-under-par 68 and finished in third place at the 5A State Golf Tournament Wednesday at Mariah Hills Golf Course in Dodge City. The senior had seven birdies and finished one-shot behind Tyler Trudo of Goddard-Eisenhower and Gentry Scheve of Emporia.

Fellow senior Josh Norris fired a 3-over-par 74 and finished in a four-way tie for 15th place.

The 68 by McCrae was the lowest 18 hole score by a Hays High golfer ever at a state tournament. His season average of 73.6 broke the season stroke average of 73.7 that he had shared with Trey Herman. His career stroke average of 76.2 erased the 76.8 career average of Nick VonLintel (2008-11).

The Indians shot a 304, their lowest round of the season and finished in fourth place, six shots back of third place Kapaun Mt. Carmel.

Andover Central won the team title with a 293. St. Thomas Aquinas was second with a 297.

Rozean leads Monarchs at 3A State Golf

EMPORIA, Kan. – TMP-Marian’s Cameron Rozean shot a 9-over-par 80 and finished in 12th place at the 3A State Golf Tournament Wednesday at the Emporia Golf Course. The senior recorded four bogeys on the front nine and five on the back and was part of a five-way tie for 10th but finished third in the playoff.

Phillipsburg’s Ty Sides also shot an 80 and finished fourth in the playoff.

The Monarchs shot 349 as a team and finished in seventh place. Sabetha won the team title with a 327, nine shots better than Caney Valley. Sabetha and Phillipsburg both shot 339 with Sabetha claiming third place.

Stockton’s Beougher finishes third at 1A State Golf

SALINA, Kan. – Stockton’s Brady Beougher shot a 7-over-par 77 and finished third at the 1A State Golf Tournament Wednesday at the Salina Municipal Golf Course. The senior recorded four bogeys and three birdies on the back nine and won a playoff with Frankfort’s Aiden Gerstner to claim third place.

Central Plains Alex Hickel overcame two double-bogeys and a bogey on the back nine and finished runner-up with a 6-over-par 76, one shot behind individual champ Eli Bullinger of Montezuma-South Gray.

Lathe Watkins of Osborne lost a playoff with Kate Tilma of the Classical School in Wichita and finished seventh. Watkins shot an 8-over-par 78.

Osborne shot a 340 and finished second, four shots behind Frankfort. Atwood was sixth with a 371 and Stockton 12th with a 398.

HHS softball lands five on All-WAC team

Hays High placed five players on the All-Western Athletic Conference softball team. Seniors Jaysa Wichers and Kaitlyn Brown were named to the first team. Juniors Macee Altman, Madelyn Waddell and Cassidy Prough are honorable mention picks.

Brown led the Indians with 25 hits and a .424 batting average. She went 1-1 in the circle with eight strikeouts and four walks.

Wichers tied for the team lead with 20 RBI and was second on the team with six doubles. She went 7-7 in the circle with a team-low 3.06 ERA. Wichers struck out 102 while walking 23.

Altman led the team with eight doubles and two triples and was tied for the team lead with 20 RBI while hitting .364.

Waddell hit .404 and hit a team-best three home runs.

Prough was second on the team with a .410 batting average.

The Indians finished the season 8-9.

HHS places five on All-WAC girls’ soccer team

Hays High has placed five players on the All-Western Athletic Conference girls’ soccer team. Senior Cori Isbell and junior Isabel Robben were named to the first team with senior Hannah McGuire, junior Judith Isabel and sophomore Allison Shubert honorable mention picks.

The Indians finished 11-2-5 on the year, losing in the regional finals to Valley Center who has since advanced to the state semifinals.

Play suspended at state golf tournaments

Mother nature was the big winner at the state golf tournaments around Kansas with play suspended yesterday at every location.

At the 3A state tournament at the Emporia Municipal Club in Emporia, where the TMP golf team is, play is scheduled to resume on Wednesday morning at 11 am. The Monarchs Cameron Rozean sits in seventh place at 5-over through 11 holes. Trevor Wilson of Caney Valley and Tyler Martin of Phillipsburg share the lead at 3-over when play resumes.

Play will also resume at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Hesston at the Hesston Golf Park at the 2A state tournament. Plainville’s Tanner Copeland sits two back of the lead at 1-over-par through six holes. Teammate Parker Krob is 2-over through eight. Carter Minson of Trego is also 2-over through three and Ellis’ Brady Frickey 3-over through six.

In Salina, at the Salina Municipal Golf Course, the 1A tournament will resume tomorrow at 10 a.m. Stockton’s Brady Beougher sits at 1-over-par through five holes and is one shot off the lead. Central Plains Alex Hickel and Osborne’s Lathe Watkins are both 2-over through five.

Hays High is at 5A tournament is Dodge City, at Mariah Hills Golf Course and that is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The sand green tournament has been moved to Wednesday in LaCrosse.
