FHSU’s Shedeed named to Academic All-America First Team

FHSU Athletics

AUSTIN, Texas – Fort Hays State senior safety Connor Shedeed was named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Shedeed receives this distinction after being named to the Academic All-District Team.

Shedeed holds a 3.81 GPA at Fort Hays State while double majoring in Criminal Justice and Political Science. He is one of eight defensive backs nationally named to the Academic All-America Team, voted among the top four. Google Cloud Academic All-America Football Team selections are based upon both an athlete’s accomplishments in the classroom and their impact on the field.

Shedeed had a great senior season for the Tigers, leading the team in interceptions with three. He ranked second on the team in tackles with 88. For his career, Shedeed had 251 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 4 interceptions, 8 pass breakups, and 3 forced fumbles, playing in all 48 games for FHSU since the beginning of his redshirt-freshman season. Shedeed was a two-time All-MIAA selection, earning second team honors in 2018 and an honorable mention pick in 2017.

Shedeed is Fort Hays State’s sixth Academic All-America selection under head coach Chris Brown. He joins Alex Whitehill, Jesse Trent (3-time recipient), and Doyin Jibowu as student-athletes under Brown to earn the distinction. Overall, Shedeed is the 48th Academic All-America selection by CoSIDA in Fort Hays State’s history.

FHSU’s Delgado and Brown earn D2CCA All-American honors

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Fort Hays State had two players named to the D2CCA All-America team for the 2018 season. Linebacker Jose Delgado and placekicker Dante Brown both earned First Team honors at their respective positions. Both have received All-America honors for two consecutive seasons.

Delgado, the D2CCA Super Region 3 Defensive Player of the Year, headlines the first-team selections at linebacker. Delgado finished the year with 117 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries and 1 forced fumble, earning MIAA Defensive Player of the Year honors as well. He reached double figures in tackles eight times in the 12 games played in 2018, reaching 14 twice. He reached double figures in a game 20 times throughout his 44-game career with the Tigers, earning All-MIAA honors three times and first-team honors the last two years. With 402 career tackles, he became the all-time tackles leader in Fort Hays State’s NCAA Division II era.

Brown now has All-America honors at two different positions after earning All-America Third Team honors as a punter last year from the Don Hansen Football Committee. Earning first team honors as a kicker, Brown was the leader in voting for kickers nationally. His numbers back the selection as he led the nation in field goals made with 28. He averaged an NCAA-best 2.33 field goals per game, breaking the MIAA record for field goals in a season by three and coming just two shy of the NCAA Division II single-season record. He converted 84.8 percent of his field goal attempts, going 28-of-33 for the season, to rank fifth in NCAA Division II. Brown also shattered the Fort Hays State single-season record for points with 123, going past the mark of 94 set last year by his predecessor at placekicker, Brandon Brown. With 123 points, Brown ranks 12th in NCAA Division II in scoring. Brown also remained the team’s punter this year with 67 punts for 2,772 yards, averaging 41.4 yards per attempt. He was an All-MIAA First Team selection at both kicker and punter this year.

Delgado and Brown are the third and fourth repeat All-America performers at Fort Hays State in the program’s NCAA Division II history. They join Keith Eck (1995 and 1996) and Nathan Shepherd (2016 and 2017) as the only players to receive postseason All-America honors multiple years. Eck was the FHSU record holder for tackles (361) in the program’s NCAA history until Delgado broke that mark this year with 41 more.

TMP basketball teams split doubleheader in Pratt

The TMP boys and girls basketball teams split a doubleheader Tuesday night in Pratt against their former Mid-State Activities Association rivals the Greenbacks.

Girls: Pratt 35, TMP 26
The TMP Monarchs were held to a season-low 26 points and managed to shoot just 27 percent as they fall 35-26 to the Pratt Greenbacks Tuesday in Pratt.

Pratts opened the game on a 10-0 run and had built a 13-4 lead after the first quarter.

With just over one minute to play in the first half the Greenbacks had 12-point at 23-11 but the Monarchs closed the first half on a 9-4 run and trailed 23-17 at the break.

The second half was much the same, a low scoring affair that saw Pratt hold the Monarchs to just three points in the third quarter and led 29-20.

Early in the fourth quarter Pratt had built an 11-point lead at 31-20. TMP was able to close the deficit to five after a pair of Jillian Lowe field goals but Pratt made just enough free throws down the stretch to earn the 35-26 win.

Sasha Wasinger had a team-high seven points for the Monarchs and Lowe chipped in with six.

TMP falls to 2-3 on the season.

FHSU women move up in both media and coaches poll

The Fort Hays State women’s basketball team has continued its climb in the national polls after a pair of conference victories, moving to No. 6 in the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll while sliding up to fourth in the D2SIDA Media Poll.

The Tigers are up three spots in the Coaches poll after earning a pair of wins as the ninth-ranked team in the country last week. Fort Hays State was one of four schools to be listed atop at least one ballot this week, picking up one first-place vote. The Tigers earned 469 points in the voting process, 15 points behind fifth-place Bentley.

Fort Hays State is the top-ranked team in the central region in both polls, with Central Missouri ranked 15th in the Coaches poll and Augustana ranked 14th in the Media poll.

The Tigers are 4-1 all-time as the sixth-ranked team in the country after sitting at that spot in the polls twice during the 2014-15 season.

It is the best ranking for the Tigers in the Coaches poll since they were ranked fifth on February 9, 2016 while it is their top spot in the Media poll since they were No. 1 on December 15, 2015.

Two other MIAA programs join the Tigers and Jennies in the Coaches poll, with Central Oklahoma and Emporia State clinging to last week’s rankings of No. 23 and No. 24, respectively.

The Tigers will take a brief hiatus from conference play over the holiday season before returning to league play against Central Missouri in January. Tabor College opens the non-conference stretch when the Bluejays come to Gross Memorial Coliseum for a 7 p.m. tip Friday (Dec. 14).

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A person familiar with the negotiations says the Kansas City Royals and outfielder Billy Hamilton have agreed to a $5.25 million contract for next season that includes up to $1 million in incentives.

Hamilton was the everyday center fielder for the Reds last season, but he was not tendered a contract for 2019.

Although a lifetime .236 hitter, he stole at least 50 bases four straight seasons before dipping to 34 last year.

OVERTIME

In a game featuring Junction City and Great Bend last Tuesday, a Junction City player came back into the game after already having picked up two technical fouls.

“Two technical fouls were assessed against Junction City for dunking at halftime. A.J. Dickerson and Qua’vez Humphreys were assessed the technicals. Later in the second half another technical was assessed against A.J.Dickerson and he had to leave the game. Later A.J. went back on the floor to play but had to return to the bench. I believe there was some confusion that led to him returning to the floor.”

Chris Klieman named head football coach at Kansas State

Courtesy Kansas State Athletics

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Chris Klieman, a proven winner with a championship pedigree, has been named the 35th head football coach in Kansas State history, Athletics Director Gene Taylor announced Monday.

Klieman (pronounced KLY-men) has won five conference championships and three national championships in five seasons as the head coach at North Dakota State, and he currently has the Bison in the FCS Semifinals with a perfect 13-0 record prior to taking on South Dakota State in Fargo on Friday night.

Klieman has done all this despite losing 23 seniors and welcoming seven new assistant coaches prior to his first season at NDSU in 2014. That season, the Bison went 15-1 and won the national championship before going 13-2 with another national championship in 2015, 12-2 with a semifinal appearance in 2014 and 14-1 with a third national title last season.

“I’m very excited to have Chris Klieman lead our program,” Taylor said. “He is a perfect fit for us, both from a personal standpoint and as a head coach. He’s a tremendous teacher who I had the pleasure to hire at NDSU and watched him turn into a very successful coach. He will bring a ton of energy and excitement. His teams play extremely hard, disciplined football. He’s a winner. That’s all he does is win, and we’re excited to have Chris, Rhonda and the entire Klieman family join our K-State family. They will be a great fit not only for Kansas State Football and Kansas State Athletics, but also the entire community of Manhattan.”

Klieman has agreed to a six-year contract with a base salary of $2.3 million in 2019 with a $200,000 increase each year.

“This is an absolute dream job,” Klieman, a four-time finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award as the FCS Coach of the Year, said. “I’m so happy and thrilled to follow a legend in Coach Snyder. I’ve followed him from afar, went to his camps while playing in Waterloo, Iowa, and played against his Kansas State team when I was at Northern Iowa. The opportunity to follow in an icon’s footsteps is something I don’t take for granted and don’t take lightly. I know I have huge shoes to fill, and I’m excited to carry on his legacy. I have prepared my entire life for this opportunity and had great experiences at many institutions, most notably North Dakota State where we’ve had unmatched success over the last eight years. I can’t express how pleased I am and thank President Myers, Gene Taylor and the search committee for trusting in me and handing over the keys to this great program.”

Klieman holds a 70-13 record in his six seasons overall as head coach, including a 67-6 mark at North Dakota State. His 84.3 winning percentage as a head coach is the third-highest mark by an active coach among all NCAA Divisions, while it is the top mark among current FCS coaches by nearly seven percent.

Klieman’s record is even more impressive considering 37 of his 67 wins at North Dakota State (55.2 percent) have come over ranked opponents, while he has two wins in two tries over FBS competition – a 34-14 win at Iowa State in his first game at the helm of NDSU and a 23-21 triumph at 11th-ranked Iowa in 2016. His teams have also been stellar in protecting home field as evidenced by his 42-3 home record at NDSU, which includes a current 18-game home winning streak.

The Bison have won the Missouri Valley Football Conference each of his five years as head coach and have put together a collective 36-4 (90.0 percent) record against conference foes since 2014. He was named the Bruce Craddock MVFC Coach of the Year in 2017, while he was the 2014 Rawlings Football/American Football Monthly FCS Coach of the Year.

“We’re pleased to welcome Coach Klieman to Kansas State University,” President Richard Myers said. “Athletic Director Gene Taylor conducted a high-quality, thorough search and we are confident Chris puts us in a great position for future success. We look forward to introducing Coach Klieman to the K-State family and know he will receive the tremendous support for which we have become nationally known. This is a great time to be a Wildcat!”

Klieman’s teams have been a model of success, ranking highly in many of the key statistical categories throughout his tenure. The Bison scoring offense has ranked in the top 10 each of the last three seasons – including a current ranking of sixth at 41.5 points per game – while their total offense mark has ranked in the top 20 the last two years with a current clip of 460.0 yards per game to rank 18th.

Klieman, who came up through the coaching ranks on defense, has always produced on that side of the ball as NDSU currently ranks in the top 15 in scoring defense (2nd; 11.1), total defense (4th; 278.8), rushing defense (12th; 106.6) and passing defense (10th; 172.2). The Bison have ranked in the top six in scoring and total defense in four of his five seasons as head coach, including a No. 1 national ranking in total defense a year ago (237.4).

Elevated from defensive coordinator to head coach at NDSU on December 15, 2013, Klieman’s defensive units during his two-year run as coordinator each included top-10 rankings in scoring defense, total defense, rushing defense and passing defense. Highlighting that run were No. 1 rankings in scoring defense in both 2012 and 2013, and total defense in 2012, the latter when he was named the Football Scoop FCS Coordinator of the Year. NDSU also led the nation in scoring defense when he was the defensive backs coach in 2011.

Klieman began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Northern Iowa, from 1991-92 before being promoted to an assistant coach in 1993. He went on to Western Illinois as an assistant coach from 1994-96 before serving as a GA at Kansas in 1997 and an assistant coach in 1999.

Kleiman then moved on to Division III Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, where he was the defensive coordinator from 2002-04 before taking over as head coach for the 2005 season. He returned to Northern Iowa in 2006 as an assistant coach before being elevated to defensive coordinator for the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

A native of Waterloo, Iowa, Klieman was a three-time All-Gateway Conference defensive back at Northern Iowa and four-year letterwinner from 1986-90. He graduated from UNI in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in health education and a master’s degree in physical education in 1992.

Klieman and his wife, Rhonda, are parents of two sons, Devin and Colby, and one daughter, Haley.

Legette named MIAA Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After recording a pair of double-doubles against conference rivals, senior Tatyana Legette has been named MIAA Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week, announced by the league office Monday (Dec. 10).

Legette posted a strong start to the conference season, averaging 19.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and two assists over two league wins last week at home. The Topeka, Kan. native dropped in 23 points alongside 13 rebounds against Nebraska-Kearney Tuesday (Dec. 4) before compiling 15 points and 10 rebounds in a victory over No. 24 Emporia State. It was Legette’s third-career double-double against the Lady Hornets.

The forward took advantage at the charity stripe all week, knocking down 20-of-22 from the free throw line (90.9 percent).

It is the third time in her career Legette has earned this distinction after picking up the award twice last season (11/20/17 and 2/26/18). She is the first Tiger to earn multiple conference player of the week honors since Kate Lehman picked up the accolade 15 times.

Legette and the ninth-ranked women’s basketball team will take a break from conference play when they host Tabor Friday (Dec. 14) at 7 p.m.
