By GERARD WELLBROCK
Hays Post
TAHLEQUAH. Okla. – Hadley Gillum and Marcus Cooper both recorded double-doubles to lead Fort Hays State to a 98-89 double-overtime win at Northeastern State. It’s the Tigers (14-9, 7-7 MIAA) first overtime win in four tries this season and their first road win since December 9th.
Gillum scored 35 points and pulled down 11 rebounds with six assists in 48 minutes. Cooper added 20 points and 17 rebounds with five assists in 42 minutes. The two combined for 7-of-10 shooting beyond the arc and 20-of-24 from the free throw line.
Brady Werth added 14 points and nine rebounds. Aaron Nicholson hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points.
Mark Johnson Postgame Interview
Game Highlights
The Tigers led by five at halftime and quickly pushed the lead to 12 with 15:55 to play but the RiverHawks (7-16, 3-11 MIAA) answered with a 28-10 run over the next eight and-a-half minutes to go up six.
The Tigers responded with a 15-4 run capped by back-to-back Hadley Gillum 3-pointers and led by five with one minute to play.
Jamir Andrews hit two threes in the closing minute for Northeastern to force overtime.
Lucas Antunez missed a shot in the lane which could have won it for the RiverHawks in the first overtime.
The Tigers scored the first five points of the second OT and never let NSU any closer.
Pomeroy, bullpen carry Tigers to victory in home opener
HAYS, Kan. – A five-RBI day from Dayton Pomeroy helped the Fort Hays State baseball team knock off Newman in its home opener Thursday (Feb. 8), 13-9. The Tigers move to 4-1 on the year, while Newman is now 0-1 on the year.
The senior first baseman collected all five RBI in the first two innings, helping the Tigers quickly turn a 4-0 deficit into an 8-4 lead.
Fort Hays State collected its 13 runs on nine hits and three Jet errors, while Newman used 14 hits, including three home runs, and one Tiger miscue to score nine times.
The Jets pushed four runs across in the first inning, but FHSU quickly responded. Clayton Basgall was first to reach base, sending a single to center. Pomeroy came through with his first big hit after Alex Weiss reached on a dropped fly ball, lifting a towering home run just inside the left field foul pole to trim the deficit to one, 4-3.
After starter Tanner Smith worked out of trouble in the top of the second with a lineout double play and a strikeout, the Tigers added five runs in the home half of the inning to take the lead for good. The first eight runners all reached base safely in the inning for FHSU. Ryan Grasser led things off with a walk, quickly advancing to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch. Marcus Altman tied things up at 4-4 with a single to right before Jason Nicholson reached on an error.
Basgall put the Tigers in front when he went the opposite way with a two-run single to right. Dayton Pomeroy helped FHSU double its lead to 8-4 when he crushed a pitch off the wall in right center, scoring Basgall and Weiss.
The Tigers appeared poised to keep building their lead after the next two batters reached base, loading the bases with no outs. However, the Jets worked out of trouble and got out of the jam with two groundouts and a strikeout.
Newman responded with a pair of runs in the third inning, but FHSU added three runs after batting around for the second inning in a row to maintain a big lead. Addison Kaasch drove in the opening run with a bases-loaded single up the middle, scoring Basgall. Jordan Wilkerson made the score 10-6 when he reached on a botched sacrifice fly to right, plating Weiss. Pomeroy came around to score in the next at bat when Cody Starkel drew a bases-loaded walk, putting the Tigers in front 11-6 after just three innings.
Both sides went down in order in the fourth inning before getting back to their scoring ways in the fifth inning. Newman closed within 11-8 in the top of the inning, but FHSU got both runs back in the home half of the frame when Wilkerson crushed his second home run of the year over the fence in left.
Nursing a five-run lead, the Tiger bullpen did its job down the stretch, holding the Jets to just one run over the next four innings. Ryan Ruder (1-0) started things off by quieting the Newman bats over 3.2 innings of work, giving up the two fifth-inning runs while striking out five.
Easton Palmer then came in to mow through the lineup, allowing just one base runner over his first two innings of work. Newman scored one run on three hits off the righty in the ninth, forcing the Tigers to go to Cody Rottinghaus to close things out. With the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate, the Seneca, Kan. native secured the win after completely fooling the Newman nine-hole hitter, striking out Turner Lace on four pitches. Rottinghaus earned his first save of the year in the process.
Pomeroy finished the day 2-for-3 with five RBI and three runs scored. Basgall and Weiss also scored three runs each while Wilkerson drove in a season-high three RBI.
The Tigers will now travel to Wichita, Kan. to take on the Jets in game two of the series Friday (Feb. 9) at 2 p.m.
The teams have also announced that game three of the series will be played at Larks Park on Monday (Feb. 12) with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
Strong second quarter carries Tiger win to win over RiverHawks
By GERARD WELLBROCK

They used an 18-3 run to build a 15-point lead and beat Northeastern State 71-53 at the NSU Event Center. It’s the Tigers (19-4, 10-4 MIAA) second seven-game win streak of the season, matching their 7-0 start.

Game Highlights

Baseball Drops Extra-Inning Affair at NWOSU
ALVA, Okla. – A ninth inning home run from Alex Weiss was not quite enough for the Fort Hays State baseball team as Northwestern Oklahoma State walked off with a 7-6 victory in the 13th inning Thursday afternoon (Feb. 7). The Tigers dip to 3-1 on the year after their first loss, while the Rangers remain perfect at 4-0.
The Rangers jumped in front early with a two-run home run in their second at bat, later adding another run to lead 3-0 after one inning of play.
Walks to Bryce Whitchurch and Ryan Grasser bookended a double off the bat of Jordan Wilkerson in the second inning, loading the bases with only one out. Marcus Altman came through with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Whitchurch.
After both sides stranded runners in the third, the Tigers came through with timely hits in the fourth inning, plating four runs. Wilkerson reached on an error to lead things off, and Ryan Grasser made the Rangers pay for the mistake right away. The second baseman crushed a home run to left center in the next at bat, tying the score at three.
After Dawson Sramek reached on another error later in the inning, Jason Nicholson followed with an RBI double to center to give the Tigers their first lead of the day. Clayton Basgall and Weiss followed with opposite-field singles, allowing Nicholson to come around and score on Weiss’ base knock to stretch the advantage to 5-3.
The Rangers answered right back, closing within one with a run in the bottom half of the fourth before jumping in front, 6-5, thanks to a pair of runs in the fifth.
Both sides cooled off down the stretch, combining for just five hits from the sixth through ninth innings. Thankfully for the Tigers, one of those hits was all they needed to tie things up. Down to their final two outs, Weiss stepped up to the plate in the top of the ninth looking to give his team a chance. The senior did that and more, depositing the ball over the fence in left center to tie the game at six.
Cody Rottinghaus came out of the pen to try to send the game to extra innings, working around a walk in the bottom of the ninth to give the Tigers life.
Fort Hays State could not get anything going in extra innings, collecting just one hit in the extra frames. The Tigers had runners on the corners in the 13th, but NWOSU got out of the jam with a flyout to right.
The Rangers, on the other hand, had runners in scoring position in all four extra frames. Sam Capps came out of the bullpen in the 10th inning to get out of the first jam with a strikeout and a groundout. After a pair of Tiger errors and a bunt single loaded the bases with no outs in the 11th, NWOSU seemed destined to end the game. Capps buckled down and got the next three batters to lift harmless pop ups, once again giving FHSU another shot.
The Rangers finally broke through in the 13th after a leadoff double off the wall was followed by a single through the left side.
Weiss led the team with three hits, driving in two runs and scoring another. Nicholson and Basgall each collected a pair of hits.
Alex Ruxlow (1.1 IP, 2 hits), Jake Vieira (2 IP, 1 hit) and Rottinghaus (1.1 IP, 0 hits) combined to silence the Ranger offense, tossing 4.2 scoreless innings. Capps (0-1) took the loss despite working out of multiple jams, firing 2.2 innings while allowing three hits.
The Tigers will return to Hays to host Newman in their home opener on Thursday (Feb. 8). First tip is set for 3 p.m. from Larks Park.
Tigers Ground Jets on Senior Night
HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State wrestling team sent the three seniors out on a high-note as the Tigers defeated Newman on Wednesday (Feb. 7), 39-4. The Tigers improved to 6-5 overall and 2-3 in MIAA duals, while the Jets dipped to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in conference matches.
The Tigers led from the start after a first period fall from sophomore Conrad Cole over Tyler Lawley in the 125-pound match giving FHSU a quick 6-0 dual lead after one match. Cole increased his pin total to nine on the season, tied for the team lead.
Dy’Juan Carney continued the winning ways with a 7-2 decision over Vincent Eremita in the 133-pound weight class. Carney broke a 1-1 tie in the third period with a takedown and a four-point near fall to pull away from Eremita.
In the 141-pound bout, No. 8 Brandon Ball continued his strong sophomore campaign by pinning Brandon Conrad of Newman in the first period after a takedown and three 4-point near falls in the match. Ball picked up his third fall of the year and team-leading 28th win of the season.
Efe Osaghae joined in on the scoring frenzy with a 16-0 technical fall of his own in the 149-pound match over Mario Rodriguez. Osaghae gave the Tigers the 20-0 dual advantage through four bouts on the evening. The redshirt-freshman continues to stay steady by ranking second on the team in wins (24) and technical falls (five).
Newman’s Tyler Mies picked up a 16-3 major decision over Ryne Cokeley in the 157-pound weight class, putting the Jets on the board in the fifth bout of the night. FHSU led Newman 20-4 halfway through the dual.
After intermission to honor the three seniors on the squad, Marty Verhaeghe squeaked by in a 6-5 decision over Kyle Ryan in the 165-pound bout. With the decision, Verhaeghe was able to get back to .500 (20-20) on the season.
The first senior of the dual was in the 174-pound weight class as Dylan Wiesner controlled Nate Panagakis for the majority of the bout after accumulating over four minutes of ride time and an eventual 12-4 major decision in favor of the Tigers. FHSU led Newman 27-4 with three bouts remaining in the dual.
In the 184-pound match, Micah Felton narrowly escaped Forlanda Parker for a slim 3-1 decision. Senior Rakim Dean came out swinging early in the 197-pound bout after earning a 16-0 technical fall victory over Jacob Stoneberger in the first period. The final senior, Dakota Gulley, wrapped up the dual with a 12-2 major decision over Thor Balavage in the 285-pound weight class. Gulley earned his second major decision of his career in the victory, moving his overall record to 33-33 as a Fort Hays State Tiger.
The Tigers have wrapped up regular season play and gear up for postseason wrestling as they travel to Wichita, Kan. for the MIAA Tournament on Sunday (Feb. 11). The event is set to begin at 10 a.m.
Wade and K-State beat Texas 67-64 for key Big 12 road win
By JIM VERTUNO
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Dean Wade scored 16 points and Kansas State rallied late in the second half to beat Texas 67-64 and earn a tough road win the in the Big 12 on Wednesday night.
Wade went to the free throw line with 3 seconds left and made one, but missed the second that would have given the Wildcats a four-point cushion. Texas’s last shot to tie was an off-balance, stumbling 3-pointer by Kerwin Roach II that didn’t get anywhere close to the basket.
The Wildcats (17-7, 6-5) trailed 54-52 before taking the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Cartier Diarra, who followed it with a steal and a layup for a 57-54 lead Kansas State never relinquished.
Texas (15-9, 5-6) got within 66-64 on a 3-pointer by Eric Davis with 44 seconds left. The Longhorns had a chance to tie but Matt Coleman turned it over on a desperate drive to the basket with 3 seconds left on a play that sent Wade to the free throw line.
Mo Bamba had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Longhorns, but scored just three points in the second half and only took four shots after halftime.
BIG PICTURE
Kansas State: The Wildcats shook off some of their offensive struggles of late. Their 14 field goals in the first half matched their total for the game in a blowout loss at West Virginia over the weekend. Wade was fearless in the middle against Bamba, who is one of the country’s premiere shot blockers. The Wildcats had five players score in double figures.
Texas: Texas dropped a key home loss after a stretch of games that saw the Longhorns start to build a solid postseason resume. Texas lacked the offensive punch it usually gets from Dylane Osetkowski and Roach, two of their most dependable scorers. Both were scoreless in the first half. Osetkowski finished with 8 points and Roach was 2 of 10 shooting.

Reaves, Shamet lead No. 22 Wichita State past Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Wichita State’s lead had dwindled to five points when coach Gregg Marshall called a timeout to settle his squad and get key players back on the floor.
The result was a rejuvenated Wichita State that pulled away from Memphis in the 22nd-ranked Shockers’ 85-65 win over the Tigers on Tuesday night.
“I just said: ‘OK, that’s enough. Just relax and execute, and stop turning the ball over,”‘ Marshall said.
Once Wichita State got things back in order, it built a lead that eventually reached 27, a strong reversal from the first half when the Shockers struggled to make shots.
“We executed flawlessly down the stretch,” Marshall said. “We got layups. We were pounding the offensive glass. We were getting it in to our post players.”
Austin Reaves scored 22 points, and Landry Shamet added 20 points and five assists. Darral Willis Jr. finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Zach Brown scored 11 points for the Shockers (18-5, 8-3 American Athletic Conference), who were coming off an overtime loss at Temple on Saturday.
Brown also was instrumental in holding down Jeremiah Martin, Memphis’ leading scorer, who was held to 2 of 10 from the field while scoring 16 points to lead the Tigers (14-10, 5-6). Martin missed all five shots from outside the arc.
“(Martin) had five turnovers and 16 points, but, man, he really had to work for it,” Marshall said.
Kareem Brewton Jr. scored 12 points and Raynere Thornton had 11 points, missing only one of his six shots as Memphis lost its second straight and fourth of five.
“We were right in the thick of it,” Memphis coach Tubby Smith said. “We had our chances, our bench was outstanding.. … While we were with our bench we had good production.”
Wichita State, which was hovering around 33 percent shooting through much of the first half, shot 53.8 percent in the second half.
Memphis actually pulled within five points twice after halftime, only to have Shamet score to stem the rally. The second time, his field goal started a 17-3 run and the Shockers ran the lead to 19 points with about 5 minutes left and coasted home.
“The game was much closer, obviously, than the final score would indicate,” Marshall said. “I’m just glad we stood there, took the punch and responded well.”
TURNOVER TROUBLES
Wichita State committed only eight turnovers, but several came at key points in the second half, allowing Memphis to pull closer. “The way they got back in the game was silly turnovers,” Marshall said. “We’ve got to stop turning the ball over by throwing it to the other team on live-ball turnovers.”
REAVES ROLLING
Reaves has scored at least 20 points in three straight games. Over that span, the sophomore guard has made 21 of 35 shots, including 15 of 27 from outside the arc. “He’s a good player,” Marshall said, adding: “We passed the ball well. … We were sharing it. The guards were sharing it back and forth.”
BIG PICTURE
Wichita State: The Shockers, who dropped six spots in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 poll, may have improved their record, but their overall performance was still a bit rough early. They let Memphis hang around until the flurry at the midway portion of the second half when they scored easily at the rim. They outrebounded Memphis 39-28, including 14 offensive boards that led to 23 second-chance points.
Memphis: Earlier in the week, Smith hinted that the Tigers were “right on the cusp” of consideration for the NCAA Tournament. They showed they could stay with a nationally-ranked team for short stretches, but the more talented Shockers eventually had their way.

Graham leads No. 10 Kansas to close home win over TCU
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Devonte’ Graham scored 24 points, Udoka Azubuike added 16 and No. 10 Kansas beat TCU 71-64 on Tuesday night.
The Jayhawks (19-5, 8-3 Big 12) have struggled this season to dominate at home as they traditionally have, but were able to avoid dropping two straight in Allen Fieldhouse thanks to a grind-it-out finish.
Kouat Noi led the way for the Horned Frogs (16-8, 4-7) with 17 points. Vlad Brodzianksy had 15 points and eight rebounds.
Foul trouble limited Azubuike to play just seven minutes in the first half for Kansas, but the rest allowed him to play 18 in the second. He finished with a game-high 11 rebounds.
Mitch Lightfoot played 22 minutes and had six points in his first career start for the Jayhawks after replacing the struggling Lagerald Vick earlier this week. Vick, however, played seven more minutes than Lightfoot in the first game since the move was made.
Alex Robinson finished with nine assists, passing coach Jamie Dixon for seventh place on TCU all-time list. Kenrich Williams moved into fifth place on TCU’s rebounding list, going ahead of Mickey McCarty.
TCU is 1-4 against top 10 teams this season. The Horned Frogs haven’t won a road game against a ranked opponent since 1998.
Kansas is now 16-2 all-time against TCU, and is a perfect 7-0 inside Allen Fieldhouse.
BIG PICTURE
Kansas earns a much-needed win after dropping its third Big 12 game this past weekend to Oklahoma State. The Jayhawks now sit in first place in the conference, one-half game ahead of Texas Tech.
TCU continues its slide since losing star Jaylen Fisher, whose knee injury in January sidelined him for the rest of the year.
