Hays girls drops fourth game in five days

The Hays High Lady Indians wrapped up their appearance in the Mid-America Classic in McPherson with a 7th place game against Shawnee Mission South on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Indian’s fourth game in five days started at a slow pace.  The Indians hit just two of nine field goals in the first quarter and trailed 8-5 after the first eight minutes.  The Lady Indians opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run to take their first lead of the game at 12-10.  The two teams swapped the lead before South went on a 11-2 run.  That run established an eight point lead for the Raiders at 24-16.  Isabel Robben and Kallie Leiker combined for eight straight points to tie the game with under two minutes left before halftime.  South took a 27-26 lead into halftime after hitting three of four free throws and Robben scored her 10th point of the second quarter.

Highlights

Hays never did regain the lead in the second half.  The Indians did tie the game one time at 37 with 1:20 left in third quarter.  South scored the final four points of the quarter and never relinquished the lead.  The Lady Indians fell behind by as many as eight in the fourth quarter at 47-39.  Hays did cut the lead down to two with just over a minute remaining.  South hit five of their final six free throws to defeat Hays 53-49.

Coach Kirk Maska

Hays falls to 8-5 after their fourth straight loss in five days.  Shawnee Mission South improves to 5-7.  Isabel Robben led the team with 20 points, seven rebounds and took seven charges.  Mattie Hutchison added ten points.

Hays returns to action Tuesday for a girls and boys double header, hosting Salina South.

OPINION: Become an official and stay connected to high school sports

By BOB GARDNER

Executive Director of the National Federation of State High School Associations
and GARY MUSSELMAN
Executive Director of the Kansas State High School Activities Association

They don’t make the headlines, their names are not in the box scores and they don’t make the all-star teams, but perhaps the most important individuals in high school sports are the contest officials.

These individuals are so important that, in fact, there would be no organized competitive sports at the high school level without the men and women who officiate these contests every day across the country. Subtract the dedicated men and women who officiate high school sports and competitive sports would no longer be organized; they would be chaotic.

In some areas, high school officials are retiring faster than new licenses are being issued. And junior varsity, freshmen and middle school games are being postponed – or even cancelled – because there are not enough men and women to officiate them.

Anyone looking for a unique way to contribute to the local community should consider becoming a licensed high school official. For individuals who played sports in high school, officiating is a great way to stay close to the sport after their playing days have ended. Officiating helps people stay in shape, expands their social and professional network and offers part-time work that is flexible, yet pays. In fact, officiating is a form of community service, but with compensation.

Another benefit of officiating is that individuals become role models so that teenagers in the community can learn the life lessons that high school sports teach. Students learn to respect their opponents and the rules of the game and the importance of practicing good sportsmanship thanks, in part, to those men and women who officiate. And the objectivity and integrity that high school officials display is an example that every young person needs to observe firsthand. In short, communities around the country will be stronger because of the life lessons that high school officials help teach the next generation.

Officiating is a great way to stay connected to sports and to give back to the local high school and community. We need dedicated men and women to become involved so that high school sports can continue to prosper for years to come.

Individuals interested in learning more about becoming a high school official, and even begin the application process, can do so at www.HighSchoolOfficials.com.

FHSU’s Gross Memorial Coliseum named among best in Division II

FHSU Athletics
FHSU Athletics

NCAA.com named Fort Hays State University’s Gross Memorial Coliseum as one of the Best Basketball Arenas in Division II. With a capacity of nearly 7,000 and Fort Hays State’s basketball teams consistently ranking among the top five in NCAA Division II attendance each year, the coliseum provides a great game day atmosphere that is hard to find anywhere else in Division II.

Click HERE for the entire listing.

Now in its 45th year of operation, the coliseum has been home to four national championship teams in Fort Hays State’s rich basketball history, three men’s (1984, 1985, and 1996) and one women’s (1991). The long-term success of each team in the coliseum adds to the mystique of being one of the most difficult places for opponents to play in NCAA Division II. Since joining Division II in 1991-92, Fort Hays State’s men have a record of 358-59 at home, making a staggering win percentage of .859 as of January 23, 2018. The win percentage is nearly just as good all-time at .841 with an overall record of 592-112. On the women’s side since joining Division II, FHSU is 324-67 at home also creating a win percentage north of 80 percent at .829 as of January 23, 2018. Fort Hays State’s current head coaches have very similar win percentages at the coliseum, Tony Hobson (women, 10th year) at .852 and Mark Johnson (men, 17th year) at .840. A total of 22 conference championships have been won by Fort Hays State in its time calling Gross Memorial Coliseum home, 13 by the men and nine by the women. The men’s program has a total of 20 conference championships overall, winning seven before calling the coliseum home.

Add in a tremendous game day atmosphere (which includes top-notch pep band, cheer and dance teams, public address, and game promotions) with some of the best attendance figures yearly in Division II, the coliseum is one of the best places to watch both women’s and men’s college basketball. The Fort Hays State men have been among the top five nationally in home attendance for the last four years, while the women have ranked second in home attendance nationally the last three years and among the top five over the last five years.

The coliseum has seen seven teams reach the 30-win plateau for a season, including five men’s and two women’s. The 1984 and 1985 NAIA men’s national championship teams each had 35, while the 1991 NAIA women’s national title team generated 34. The 1996 men’s team was one of four in NCAA Division II history to go undefeated at 34-0, holding the Division II record for most wins by an undefeated team until Findlay (Ohio) broke the mark in 2009 by going 36-0. Most recently, the 2014-15 women’s team reached 30 wins, its most Division II program history.

Even with the long-term success of the basketball programs, the coliseum is also home to the FHSU volleyball and wrestling programs. With its large capacity the coliseum annually serves as a host site for Kansas State High School Activities Association Championship Tournaments in volleyball, wrestling, and basketball, so it has also seen plenty of high school sports history.

This is the second “Best Arenas” honor for Gross Memorial Coliseum within the last two years. In January of 2017, it was named one of the Five Best Arenas in D2 Basketball by Hero Sports.

Royals sign veteran INF Ryan Goins to minor league deal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals have signed former Blue Jays infielder Ryan Goins to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to big league spring training.

Kansas City announced the move Wednesday.

The 29-year-old Goins was non-tendered by the Blue Jays after hitting .237 with a .286 on-base percentage last season. He did set career highs with 21 doubles, nine homers and 62 RBIs.

Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar hit free agency this offseason, which means youngster Raul Mondesi is lined up to start at shortstop and Whit Merrifield at second base this season. Goins could provide some veteran depth behind both of those positions.

K-State promotes Andre Coleman to offensive coordinator

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Kansas State coach Bill Snyder promoted Andre Coleman to offensive coordinator on Wednesday, and made Charlie Dickey and Collin Klein co-coordinators in a revamped coaching staff structure.

Coleman played wide receiver for Snyder in the early 1990s and has tutored the Wildcats’ receivers the past five years. He takes over for Dana Dimel, who left to become head coach at UTEP.

Dickey, the Wildcats’ offensive line coach, will coordinate the running game while Klein, a former Heisman Trophy finalist, will handle the passing game along with his role as quarterbacks coach.

Snyder sounded unconcerned in a statement that he has essentially three coordinators, pointing out their long histories with the program and “how well these three have worked together.”
