Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alex Smith dived for a touchdown on the first possession of overtime, completing the Kansas City Chiefs’ frantic rally from a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat the San Diego Chargers 33-27 in their season opener Sunday.

Smith threw for 363 yards and two touchdowns, the second a back-shoulder fade to Jeremy Maclin with just over nine minutes left in the fourth quarter that trimmed the Chiefs’ deficit to 27-17.

Cairo Santos kicked a 33-yard field goal a few minutes later, and after forcing a three-and-out, Spencer Ware finished off a four-play drive with a touchdown plunge to knot it at 27.

Kansas City needed 10 plays to march 75 yards in overtime, and Smith finished off one of the biggest comebacks in franchise history with his keeper from the 2-yard line on third-and-goal.

Royals hold off White Sox, remain 4 back of wild card

CHICAGO (AP) — Whit Merrifield hit a go-ahead two-run double in a three-run seventh inning and the Kansas City Royals held on for a 6-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night.

Royals closer Wade Davis gave up a single to Tyler Saladino and a double to Adam Eaton to lead off the ninth before Melky Cabrera’s infield single cut the deficit to one.

With the tying run on third and one out, Davis struck out Jose Abreu and Justin Morneau for his 23rd save as the Royals remained four games behind Baltimore for the second AL wild card.

Eric Hosmer hit a two-run homer in the first and Alex Gordon a solo shot in the fourth off White Sox starter James Shields. The struggling righty exited after six innings leading 4-3 before the Chicago’s bullpen faltered.

Chris Beck (2-2) was charged with three runs while giving up two hits and a walk and getting one out.

Kevin McCarthy (1-0) got the last out of the sixth for the win.

FHSU volleyball improves to 8-0 with two wins Saturday

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – It took a different road to get there, but the Fort Hays State University volleyball team ended with a familiar result Saturday afternoon at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Volleyball Invitational. The Tigers extended their season-opening winning streak to eight matches with a pair of victories, opening the day with a thrilling five-set victory over tournament host Westminster College (2-5) before outlasting Minot State (4-4) in four sets.

The Tigers were the only team to finish the tournament 4-0, leading the competition with a .242 hitting percentage on the weekend and 42 total blocks. FHSU is now 8-0 for the first time since 2003 (14-0) and for the sixth time in program history.

With one match yet to play, Rebekah Spainhour led all players in the tournament with a .378 attack percentage, 22 total blocks and 72.0 points while ranking second with 55 kills, five behind teammate Crystal Whitten.

The squad will return to action next weekend for four matches in Denver, Colo. The Tigers will open the weekend against Central Christian at 9 a.m. (CDT) on Friday (Sept. 16) before a 3 p.m. duel with Graceland. The tournament continues Saturday with a match against Haskell at 11 a.m. before wrapping up with tournament hosts Johnson & Wales at 7 p.m.

Fort Hays State 3, Westminster 2 (18-25, 28-26, 25-13, 19-25, 15-7)
In a matchup between the only teams to go 2-0 on Friday, the Tigers emerged victorious in a five-set duel against the Westminster Griffins. FHSU hit .200 for the match while holding the Griffins to a .127 attack percentage. The Tigers brought the match home with a blazing .389 hitting effort in the fifth set, recording nine kills to just two errors.

Senior Rebekah Spainhour matched her career record with 19 kills in the match, also leading the way with an unstoppable .415 attack percentage and seven total blocks (one solo). Crystal Whitten contributed 18 kills, two service aces and a team-high 21 digs. Setter Hannah Wagy tossed up a personal-best 61 assists for the third time in her career at FHSU, adding five total blocks (one solo) and seven digs. Callie Christensen turned in five block assists and five kills while Megan Anderson tallied 12 kills and three total blocks.

After taking the first set, 25-18, the Griffins scored the first point in the second set and seemed to be on the way to a two-set lead. But the Tigers kept things close, never falling behind by more than four, before finally taking the lead at 23-22 on a big block from Christensen and Spainhour. The Griffins managed three set points after taking the next two rallies, but two kills from Spainhour and a Westminster attack error kept the Tigers alive. After Spainhour returned serve to the Tigers at 26-26, back-to-back attacks from Whitten and Anderson leveled the match at one set apiece.

The Tigers found their groove in the third set, winning 25-13 after taking eight of the first 10 points in the frame. Spainhour extended the lead to 20-10 with a kill on a pass from Wagy after a solo block. Kailey Klibbe came in to serve for the final four points, recording one service ace before a block from Spainhour and Wagy made the score 23-13. Two Griffin attack errors put the Tigers within one set of victory.

The Griffins leveled the match after taking the fourth set, 25-19, with Westminster going on multiple five-point runs. The teams traded points to open the final frame before a kill from Spainhour returned serve to FHSU trailing 7-6. Klibbe then subbed in to serve, helping the Tigers score nine-straight points to win the match. Wagy and Spainhour combined for a block before each recorded a kill to extend the lead to 12-7. After a pair of Griffin attack errors, Whitten ended the match on a kill after a pass from Wagy.

Fort Hays State 3, Minot State 1 (21-25, 25-12, 25-15, 25-19)
The Tigers returned to the floor after a two-hour break and struggled to find a rhythm against Minot State. The Beavers kept the first set within reach before making their move late in the game, scoring five of the last six points to take the set, 25-21. But the momentum quickly shifted back to Fort Hays State, with the Tigers limiting MSU to just 12, 15 and 19 points in the final three sets, respectively.

The Tigers hit an eye-popping .314 for the match, including three sets with an attack percentage above .355 (2nd .357, 3rd .390, 4th .355). Just as impressive was the Tigers’ season-high 14 total blocks while the Beavers managed just three blocks in the match.

Rebekah Spainhour continued a tremendous day on the floor, hitting .480 with 14 kills compared to just two attack errors. The senior added four total blocks and one service ace. Callie Christensen tied a personal-best with nine total blocks, while Megan Anderson added eight blocks and 10 kills. Crystal Whitten led the team with 16 kills, adding eight digs and two blocks. Ari Jacobson led the team with 16 kills wit Hannah Wagy leading the way with 49 assists.

The Tigers quickly bounced back after dropping the opening set, jumping out to an 8-2 lead in the second frame. A pair of Whitten kills and service aces from Kailey Klibbe and Spainhour helped FHSU score nine of the final 10 points in the set to capture a dominating 25-12 victory.

The Tigers never trailed in the third set after a block from Anderson and Christensen set the tone on the first point. Three kills from Sydney Dixon gave FHSU a quick 5-2 lead before Whitten knocked down four kills in five points, extending the advantage to 13-5. The set was bookended with Anderson and Whitten going up for a block to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead in the match.

The fourth set belonged to Megan Anderson, who recorded six kills, zero attack errors and two blocks in the frame. Multiple kills from Anderson and Dixon alongside two blocks from Christensen and Anderson put the Tigers in front, 17-10. Later, Anderson gave the Tigers a shot at match point with a kill and ended the contest two rallies later with an attack on a pass from Wagy.

Ohio builds big early lead, knocks off Kansas

By DAVE SKRETTA

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Greg Windham threw for 167 yards and a touchdown, ran for 146 yards and another score, and led Ohio to a 37-21 victory over mistake-prone Kansas on a sun-splashed Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

Dorian Brown added 122 yards rushing, Louie Zervos was 5-for-5 on field goals, and Papi White and Mason Morgan also scored for the Bobcats (1-1), who rebounded from a triple-overtime loss to Texas State a week ago to beat a Kansas (1-1) team coming off its first win in more than a year.

LaQuvionte Gonzalez had a 99-yard kickoff return for the Jayhawks, but he also muffed a pair of punts that led to field goals. Montell Cozart threw for 198 yards and hit Steven Sims Jr. for a pair of TDs, but the dual-threat quarterback also struggled to deal with constant pressure.

The Jayhawks did everything they could to give the game away.

Along with Gonzalez’s punt return trouble, the Jayhawks had a snap go awry on their own punt that led to another field goal. Ke’aun Kinner was stacked up in the end zone for a safety in the first quarter. And a series of penalties at the most inopportune of times kept Ohio scoring drives alive.

The result was a first half about as lopsided as they come: The Bobcats out-gained the Jayhawks 359 to 21, had 18 first downs to one, and controlled the ball for 22 minutes, 56 seconds.

Yet the Jayhawks managed to make it interesting.

Cozart connected with Sims on a 74-yard touchdown pass on the second play out of the locker room, and then hit Sims from 22 yards out a few minutes later to trim a 28-7 halftime lead to 31-21.

But an Ohio defense that allowed 630 yards to Texas State held the Jayhawks to three straight punts, deflating a crowd that began to dwindle. And Windham showed the poise of a fifth-year senior rather than a quarterback making his second career start, scrambling for a crucial first down midway through the fourth quarter that kept the clock moving and the Kansas offense on the sideline.

The outcome was nothing new for Ohio coach Frank Solich, who went 6-0 against the Jayhawks when he was with former Big 12 rival Nebraska. He beat them by an average of 40-9 over that stretch.

It was all-too-familiar for Kansas coach David Beaty, too. He was hoping to build on a victory over Rhode Island last week that ended the Jayhawks’ 15-game losing streak.

THE TAKEAWAY

Ohio: The Bobcats ran for 334 yards without top running back A.J. Ouellette, who hurt his foot the previous week. He was on crutches when the captains went on the field for the coin toss.

Kansas: The Jayhawks were 0 for 8 on third down, failed to pick up both fourth downs and still could not settle on a quarterback. Ryan Willis threw a pick late in the fourth quarter in relief.

UP NEXT

Ohio: Tries to beat another power-five opponent when it visits Tennessee on Saturday.

Kansas: Heads to Memphis on Saturday to face a team that beat the Jayhawks 55-23 a year ago.

Ellis outlasts TMP

By Jeremy McGuire
Hays Post

Ellis 42, TMP 32

TMP and Ellis battled all night long on Friday at Lewis Field Stadium.  TMP had their only lead of the game and the season following a 29 yard field goal from Jace Rueschhoff that gave the Monarchs a 3-0 lead.  Ellis would take the lead on a 1 yard run from Easton Smith but couldn’t convert the extra point kick and led 6-3.  TMP would tie the game at six points apiece following a second Rueschhoff field goal.

It was a back and forth second quarter as the two teams would traded scores and had a 12-12 tie.  Ellis scored the next 14 points on a pair of Smith touchdown passes.  The first, a 55 yard strike to Ryan Herl.  The second a 26 yard connection with Geoffrey Soneson.  TMP would pull to within one score just before the half when Gavin Schumacher plunged into the end zone from one yard out making the score 26-19 at halftime.

Ellis would get the ball to start the second half and TMP would promptly take the ball back on a Schumacher interception followed by his second one yard touchdown run to tie the game at 26.  The Railroaders would score 16 unanswered points thanks in large part to Clay Feik who chipped in with a 2 yard run and two point conversion followed by a 39 yard rumble.

TMP would score as Luke Ruder threw his first touchdown pass of the season to Tucker Rhoades midway through the fourth quarter but he Monarchs were not able to convert the two point conversion.  Ruder finished the game with a career high 296 yards through the air and 89 on the ground.  Neither team scored the rest of the way and Ellis picked up their second win, 42-32, of the season and will be at home on Friday against Sublette.  TMP drops to 0-2 and will travel to Smith Center to take on the winless Redmen.

FHSU volleyball picks up two wins in Salt Lake

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Fort Hays State University volleyball team continued where it left off last weekend, picking up a pair of victories Friday (Sept. 9) in the Fairfield Inn & Suites Volleyball Invitational. The Tigers are now 6-0 on the season, their most victories to open a season since 2004 (7-0). FHSU cruised past Texas A&M-International (0-5) in straight sets to open the day before holding off Western New Mexico (4-3) in five sets in the nightcap.

The Invitational is being hosted by Westminster College inside Behnken Field House. The Tigers will face off with the tournament hosts, the only other team to finish 2-0 on day one, Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. The weekend will come to a close with a 5 p.m. contest with Minot State.

Fort Hays State 3, Texas A&M International 0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-15)

The Tigers dominated in the opening match of the day, never trailing by more than two points in the three-set sweep. FHSU hit .238 for the match, highlighted by a .324 hitting percentage in the final set. The Dustdevils were held to a .059 attack percentage overall.

Crystal Whitten led the Tigers with 10 kills, adding 12 digs and three service aces. Ari Jacobson picked up 17 digs to go along with two assists, while Hannah Wagy tossed up 35 assists in the match. The teams battled back and forth in the opening set, with neither side leading by more than six. CHICAGO (AP) — Carlos Rodon struck out a season-high nine over six innings, Adam Eaton doubled twice and scored two runs and the Chicago White Sox beat Kansas City 7-2 on Friday night to prevent the Royals from gaining ground in the playoff race.

Rodon (7-8) fanned Paulo Orlando with the bases loaded on his 116th pitch to end the sixth inning and move to 5-0 in his last seven starts.

Kendrys Morales had a two-run single in the first inning for Kansas City, which has dropped six of nine and remained four games behind the second wild-card after Detroit beat Baltimore.

Hays falls 35-14 at Great Bend

Hays and Great Bend met for the 79th time since 1923 as the two opened up Western Athletic Conference play on Friday night. For Hays it was the second consecutive week they had faced a ranked opponent after beating then ranked Scott City on the road 31-21. Great Bend entered the game ranked #5 after a 57-13 win over Coffeyville in week 1.

Hays fumbled the football away on the third play of the game setting up Great Bend’s quarterback Jacob Murray for a one yard touchdown plunge. The Panthers had returned the fumble to the one yard line to set up the short field. Hays went 11 plays on the next drive and reached the Panther 21 yard line before losing the ball on downs. Great Bend responded with a 13 play 79 yard scoring drive to take a 13-0 lead after missing the extra point with four seconds left in the first quarter.

Highlights

The Indians again got into Great Bend territory but punted the ball away. Leading by two scores the Panthers drove into Hays territory but threw an incomplete pass on fourth down. The Indians finally got their offense going on the ensuing drive as Keaton Markley finished off an 8 play 63 yard drive, scoring his first career varsity touchdown on a 7 yard rush. Great Bend punted for the first time all season on the next drive giving Hays the ball at their own 33 yard line with 31 seconds left before the half. With the wind at their backs and no time outs Hunter Brown hit Collyn Kreutzer on a 54 yard pass to the fifteen yard line. After spiking the ball to stop the clock Brown hit Kruezter again this time for 15 yards and a touchdown. Logan Clark hit both extra points of the first half to give Hays a 14-13 lead with nine seconds before half.

Coach Randall Rath

Great Bend took the opening drive of the second half for ten plays and 35 yard touchdown by Cal Marshall. Murray flipped the ball to the corner of the end zone for a two point conversion to go up 21-14. Tigers find golden goal down TAMIU

FHSU Sports Information
LAREDO, Texas – Fort Hays State used about every tick of the clock possible to notch its first win of the season in a 2-1 overtime win at Texas A&M-International on Thursday night (Sept. 8). Derick Gonzalez provided the golden goal with only two possible seconds remaining to avoid a tie in the double overtime thriller.

The 20th-ranked Tigers took the upper hand with a goal by Tobias Patino in the 55th minute. Maurizio Costa earned an assist by blasting a shot off the goalkeeper that rebounded to Patino for the scoring strike.

Misfortune struck FHSU in the 65th minute as the Dustdevils tied the match when FHSU mishandled a ball that went into their own goal.

With the score all square at the end of 90 minutes, the Tigers went to overtime for the second time in their first three games. It looked as though the Tigers were going to have to settle for their second draw of the season, but Mauricio Castorino found Gonzalez about 20 yards out just before the final horn sounded to lift the Tigers to victory. Gonzalez snuck his shot just inside the left post for the winning score.

Alex Rodela picked up the win in goal for the Tigers, now 1-0 on the season, playing all 109:58 of the match. He had four saves on the night. He had a big save with 20 seconds remaining, which triggered the final push for the Tigers just before the clock expired.

The Tigers have a long drive back and Hays and look to rest up for their home opener on Monday night (Sept. 12) against UC-Colorado Springs at 5 pm.
