ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Mike Moustakas had three hits and three RBIs, Kendrys Morales kept up his torrid two-out hitting and the AL Central-leading Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-3 on Saturday night.
Morales had an RBI single and Moustakas a run-scoring double off Jake Odorizzi (6-7) as the Royals grabbed a 4-3 lead in the fifth. Morales leads the majors with 47 RBIs with two outs this season, breaking the team record of 46 set by Joe Randa in 2000.
Lorenzo Cain had a run-scoring single in the sixth, and Moustakas added an RBI single in the ninth.
Kris Medlen (3-0) allowed three runs and four hits over 5 1/3 innings in his second start and ninth appearance since returning from elbow ligament replacemet surgery. Wade Davis got the last three outs for his 13th save.

Hays High held their Maroon and Gold scrimmage on Friday night at Lewis Field Stadium. The fall sports teams were introduced as were the cheer and dance teams. The soccer team held a scrimmage and the evening was capped with the football scrimmage.
Coach Randall Rath had his varsity run 16 live plays on offense and 12 of defense. Eight different players carried the ball for the varsity squad with touchdown runs by Kohlton Meyers, Keith Dryden and Maddux Winter. Meyers also hooked up with tight end Shane Berens for a 22 yard touchdown pass.
The varsity continued to work on offensive plays while the freshmen and junior varsity scrimmage on the opposite end of the field.
Coach Rath liked what he saw out of his team on Friday night and felt that the combination of cooler weather, lights and crowd helped to raise the level of excitement in the team.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alex Smith threw for 171 yards and two touchdowns in less than a half, and the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense looked the sharpest it has all preseason in a weather-shortened 34-10 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Friday night.
The game was called with 3 minutes, 50 seconds remaining after thunder rumbled and lightning streaked across the sky. Heavy rains had turned one end zone into a lake.
Smith was 16 of 18 before giving way to third-string quarterback Aaron Murray just before halftime. Murray played the rest of the game for the Chiefs (3-0), throwing for 146 yards with two touchdown passes and an interception as backup Chase Daniel got the night off.
Marcus Mariota got off to a slow start for Tennessee (1-2), misfiring on his first three throws. But the first-round pick out of Oregon was 7 of 8 for 99 yards the rest of the half.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Kendrys Morales hit his 15th homer, Edinson Volquez pitched into the seventh inning and the AL Central-leading Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 on Friday night.

Volquez (12-7) allowed two runs and six hits in 6 2-3 innings. Greg Holland, the third Kansas City reliever, got three outs for his 29th save.
Ramirez gave up three runs and six hits over 4 1-3 innings for the Rays, who started play 2 1-2 games back in the crowded second AL wild-card race. Tampa Bay is 1-3 on a six-game homestand.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Yordano Ventura struck out a career-high 11 in just six innings, Paulo Orlando homered and the Kansas City Royals hung on to beat the struggling Baltimore Orioles 5-3 on Thursday.
Ventura (9-7) allowed two hits and four walks to improve to 5-0 in his last seven starts.

The Royals’ usually solid bullpen nearly gave it away, though. Kelvin Herrera served up a homer to Ryan Flaherty in the seventh, and Greg Holland allowed two more runs in the ninth before getting Gerardo Parra to ground out with a runner on to end the game.
Chris Tillman (9-9), who tossed a five-hitter at Kauffman Stadium last May, followed his first loss since May 31 with another.
The game wasn’t all that Baltimore lost, either.
All-Star outfielder Adam Jones left soon after crashing into the wall trying to track down a fly ball in the first. Jones lay on the warning track for a few minutes before standing up and finishing the inning. There was no word on the nature or severity of the injury.
The Fort Hays State men’s cross country team was picked fourth in the 2015 MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, released on Thursday. Coaches across the conference agree that the Tigers should improve on their seventh-place finish at the MIAA Championships in 2014. Even one coach in the conference voted FHSU as the favorite.
Fort Hays State returns their top two runners, Cory Keehn and Jonny Berntansky, who redshirted in 2014. With both fully healthy and a solid group of returners from last year, the Tigers are primed to make plenty of noise at the MIAA Championships this year. Keehn and Bernasky were both All-MIAA performers in 2013 and Keehn was the MIAA Champion individually in 2012.
Add in 2014 All-MIAA performer Isaac Williams and Colby (Kan.) Community College transfer Micheal Kinuthia, the Tigers will have several strong runners up front. Kinuthia transferred to FHSU from Colby Community College for the Spring 2015 semester, but he ran cross country at Colby last year and won the Region 6 and KJCCC individual championship. He then earned All-American honors by finishing eighth overall at the NJCAA Championships. Kinuthia was an All-MIAA performer in track and field for the Tigers this past spring.
Troy Wineiger had a breakout season for the Tigers last year, nearly grabbing All-MIAA honors by finishing 23rd at the conference championship in 2014. Ryan Hopkins, Seth Parres and Brock Elgin also had great seasons, contributing to the team scoring on a regular basis.
If this year’s team stays healthy, head coach Jason McCullough feels they can compete for a conference championship. The Tiger men won the MIAA Championship in 2012.
The Tigers host the FHSU Alumni Run at the Sand Plum Nature Trail, just outside the west edge of Victoria, Kan., on Saturday, August 29 at 9:30 am. Bethany College will be coming to compete with the Tigers in the exhibition event.

The Fort Hays State women’s cross country team was picked fourth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, released on Thursday.
The Tigers finished fourth at the MIAA Championships last season under head coach Jason McCullough, who believes a top-three finish is attainable this year.
Two returning runners, Chelsea Jackson and Micki Krzesinski, received All-MIAA honors last season and are looking for solid performances again in 2015. Amanda Morgan came on strong at the end of the season and nearly grabbed all-conference status as well. Shea Bonine and Jordan Schulte also return to the team this year. McCullough expects several newcomers to compete and possibly have an immediate impact on the team scoring.

DALLAS – (AP) – Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby says he expects the conference to mandate due diligence and include more than just violent acts in a new rule that will prohibit schools from accepting transfer athletes with past disciplinary issues.
Bowlsby told The Associated Press the structure of the policy being crafted will be similar to one implemented by the Southeastern Conference. The SEC prevents schools from accepting transfers who have been dismissed from another team for “serious misconduct,” defined as sexual assault, domestic violence or other forms of sexual violence.
Bowlsby says he expects the Big 12 rule to “cast a broad net” and for schools to look into past discipline problems beyond violent acts.
He added that expects that decisions on transfers will be made by more than coaching staff personnel.
