Tiger Baseball Loses At Home To Tabor

(Photo/Ron Hart)

The Fort Hays State baseball team fell by a score of 6-5 to Tabor College on Tuesday at Larks Park in Hays. Down 6-0 after six innings, a late rally by the Tigers came up short, dropping the Tigers to 2-6 on the young season.

Double plays in the early innings killed several potential rallies by the Tigers, as Tabor methodically opened up its lead with one run in the second, three in the third, one in the fifth, and one in the sixth. The decisive run in the sixth, which scored on a throwing error by the Tigers that would have ended the inning, proved costly.

FHSU capitalized on an error by the Blue Jays in the seventh for its first run. After a Ryan Busboom double to lead off the inning, the Tabor pitcher uncorked a throw on a failed pick-off attempt at second to allow Busboom to get to third. J.C. Ochoa drove him in on a ground ball.

The Tigers took advantage of Tabor’s second error of the game in the eighth. With the bases loaded, the second baseman committed a fielding error off the bat of Mace Krol that allowed all runners to be safe, making the score 6-2. Busboom then cleared the bases with his second-straight double to make it 6-5 with one out. However, Matt Lambert entered the game to pitch and shut the door on FHSU, inducing a pop up and ground out to the next two Tiger hitters.

Lambert worked around a Sheldon Howell single and stolen base in the ninth for his second save of the season and gave Tabor (10-3) the win. Anthony Mendoza picked up the win in three innings of relief for the Blue Jays after starter Brian Kowal went just four innings.

Fort Hays State goes on the road for 4-game conference series’ at Missouri Southern and Lincoln the next two weekends before returning home on March 20 against Bethany College.

FHSU Softball Sweeps Oklahoma-Panhandle State

(FHSU Athletics Photo)

The Fort Hays State softball team went into windy Goodwell, Okla., on Tuesday afternoon and swept a doubleheader against Panhandle State. The Tigers scored 25 runs and pounded out 29 hits in the two games, winning by scores of 10-2 and 15-7. FHSU is now 11-5 on the year and they will play another doubleheader on Wednesday at Southwestern Oklahoma State in Weatherford, Okla.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 10, Panhandle State 2
Taylor Nelson hit a solo home run to lead off the first game and put the Tigers ahead 1-0. Both offenses would go stagnant until the fifth inning, when Nelson struck again, this time with an RBI single which scored pinch-runner Yasnava Susoeff. After FHSU added an insurance run in the top of the 6th, Panhandle State mounted their lone offensive attack, scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning on consecutive sacrifice flies.

Fort Hays State put the game away in the top of the seventh inning, when another solo shot from Nelson started a seven-run inning which included five hits and was aided by one Panhandle State error. Amanda Vaupel, Chelsey Rottinhaus and Christine Moses all had RBI singles in the inning, while Nelson came back around to bat and hit a sac fly.

Maddie Holub picked up the win for the Tigers, pitching a complete game and striking out nine batters while allowing four hits and two earned runs. Holub improved to 6-4 with the win and has now struck out 99 batters on the year.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 15, Panhandle State 7
OPSU jumped on top early, scoring two runs in both the first and second innings and leading 4-2 going into the third. That was when the Tigers would make their move, getting a three-run home run to left center from Adriana Wortley followed by a solo shot from Callie Wright three batters later.

The Aggies would tie the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the fourth inning before FHSU put up five runs in the fifth to blow the game open. The Tigers added four more insurance runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away.

Fort Hays State had 17 hits in the game, compared to 16 by OPSU, but the Tigers were aided by six Aggie errors and claimed a 15-7 victory.

Kaitlyn Shattleroe pitched the final 3.1 innings to pick up the victory for Fort Hays State. Shattleroe is now 5-0 on the season after allowing four hits and one run in this outing.

A Loss in the Sub-State Title Game Ends the Season for TMP Girls

The Thomas More Prep – Marian girls’ basketball team was denied a third-straight trip to the Class 3A State Tournament on Saturday night when they lost to Beloit 52-40.

The Lady Monarchs were the #1 seed in the Lyons Sub-State but the Lady Trojans earned their trip to Hutchinson by outscoring TMP 31-13 in the second half of the sub-state championship game.

Beloit, the #3 seed in the bracket, started the game with a 7-2 lead before TMP started to take control of the first half. With the help of 12 first half points from Rachel Jacobs, the Lady Monarchs took a 27-21 lead into halftime. Jacobs finished the night with 20 points and ended her career at TMP-Marian with 1,468 points (school record).

TMP’s second-leading scorer, Jenna Lang, battled with foul trouble for the second straight night. The Lady Monarchs struggled to keep afloat against Beloit (17-6) in the second half with her on the bench.

TMP held a two-point lead at the end of the third quarter but Beloit attacked inside at the beginning of the final period. Beloit went on to score the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to seize control of the game.

The Lady Trojans’ Olivia Marozas scored nine of her 19 points in the final eight minutes. TMP had no answer for Marozas and Cami Engelbert in the paint in the second half. Englebert ended the night going 7-for-7 from the free throw line and had 14 points.

Lang and Heather Ruder who both average 12.5 points per game were held in check on Saturday. Lang had seven points while Ruder added just six.

TMP’s 12-game winning streak comes to an end with the loss as does the prep careers for Jacobs, Lang, Allison Marsell, and Rebecca Pray.

Plainville and Ness City boys Earned Semifinals Wins

The top two seeds on the boy’s side advanced to the sub-state Championship game with semifinal wins on Friday night. In the first game of the night the two seed, Ness City took on the three seed Hill City.

Hill City jumped out to a 5-3 lead after Matt Craig a three-pointer and they led 7-5 but that would be their only lead of the game. Ness City finished the first quarter on an 11-2 run behind four from Colin Foos and Drew Clarke and they led 16-10 after the first quarter. The second quarter was more of the same for the Eagles. Drew Clarke hit two three-points and Colin Foos added four more points as Ness City outscored Hill City 19-8 in the second quarter and led 35-18 at halftime.

Hill City came out swinging in the second half cutting the deficit to 10 at 44-34, hitting their first five field goal attempts in the quarter. But Ness City Dalton Gantz hit his second three of the night and Drew Clarke added seven more in the third quarter and Ness City led 51-34 after three.

Hill City began the fourth quarter on a 9-2 led by three-pointers from Matt Craig and Solomon Wilson and they cut the Eagle lead to 53-45. But in the end the Ness City attack was just too much as they earned the 65-53 victory.

Ness City’s Drew Clarke led all scorers with 22 points, Collin Foos added 13 and Koltyn Ratliff and Tucker VonLehe both chipped in nine. Hill City’s Matt Craig finished with 19 points, Adam Pfeifer had 11 and Solomon Wilson added nine before fouling out.

Hill City’s season comes to an end with a 17-6 record while the Ness City Eagles are 19-3 and they will take on the Plainville Cardinals in the sub-state Championship game Saturday night in Ellis.

In the second game of the night the Plainville Cardinals proved to be too much for the Ellis Railroaders. Plainville’s Andrew Casey scored five of the first seven points as the Cardinals jumped out to a 7-2 first quarter lead. Ellis close the gap to 13-7 on a Luke Lohrmeyer layup and free throw but that was a close as they would get the rest of the way. Plainville used a 24-8 run to end the first quarter and the entire second quarter to take a 35-15 lead at halftime. The second half was more of the same for Plainville in the second half as Plainville cruised to a 63-38 win.

Plainville’s Andrew Casey led all scorers with 19 points, Hadley Gillum added 11 points and Nolan Weiser had 10. Cole Pfeifer led the Railers with 13 points and Luke Lohrmeyer finished with six points.

TMP Girls Beat Russell in the Sub-State Semifinals

The girls’ basketball team from Thomas More Prep – Marian was able to overcome an 11-point halftime deficit to Russell Friday night and get a 58-49 win in the semifinals of the Class 3A Lyons Sub-State.

The Lady Monarchs (19-3) held a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter but then got outscored in the second period 16-4.

What made things worse for TMP was the problem of Jenna Lang (TMP’s second-leading scorer) committing four fouls in the second quarter. With Lang on the bench to start the second half, Russell (15-7) took a 32-20 lead with a bucket from Janna Schulte. At that point the Lady Monarchs went on a 14-1 run to regain the lead after a 3-pointer by Heather Ruder. Ruder finished the night with a game-high 21 points.

With time winding down in the third quarter, Russell’s Madison Beagley hit a 3-pointer to give the Lady Broncos a 36-34 lead going into the final quarter.

Things got really interesting in the fourth quarter when TMP’s Rachel Jacobs fouled out with over four minutes to play and TMP only leading by four points. TMP, who defeated Russell by 18 back in January, would hit enough free throws down the stretch to avoid the upset.

Jacobs, before fouling out, ended with nine points and unofficially 13 rebounds. Lang, playing the entire second half with four fouls, finished with 14 points.

TMP has now made it 12-straight wins, and advance to the championship game of the Lyons Sub-State. The Lady Monarchs will take on the Beloit Lady Trojans Saturday evening. Beloit, the #3 seed, defeated Hoisington 52-38 in the other semifinal contest. Tip-off from Lyons is set for 6 PM and our coverage will begin at 5:40 with the Fort Hays Auto Sales Pregame Show.

Tigers Win Overtime Thriller Over Missouri Southern At MIAA Tournament

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In the first overtime game of the 2012 MIAA Men’s Basketball Championship, No. 5 seed Fort Hays State outlasted No. 4 seed Missouri Southern to earn a 103-102 first round victory Friday afternoon at Municipal Auditorium.

Karron McKenzie recorded a double-double to lead Fort Hays State, scoring 26 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to go along with five assists. Moses Dayee went 5-of-9 from three-point range, netting 22 points for the Tigers.

The game featured 11 ties and 13 lead changes, with the largest lead by either team the entire game being eight points.

Missouri Southern got off to a fast start, taking a 9-2 lead out of the gates on three Jason Adams three-pointers. It was a sign of things to come for Adams, who ended the game with 42 points. It was the second-best individual scoring performance in MIAA Men’s Basketball Tournament history, behind Washburn’s Dan Buie (45 points vs. Missouri Rolla in 2004).

Fort Hays State (19-8) fought right back, going on a 24-9 run over the next eight minutes to take its largest lead of the game at 26-18 with 9:27 to play in the first half.

Missouri Southern trimmed the Fort Hays State lead down to three at halftime, 43-40, setting up an entertaining stretch run.

After over 10 minutes and back and forth basketball, Missouri Southern appeared to take control of the game. Leading just 64-63 with 9:14 to go in the game, the Lions went on an 8-2 run to take a 72-65 advantage with 7:05 left to go.

Fort Hays State, however, turned the tide in less than two minutes and found itself in the lead, 75-73, with 5:15 showing on the clock.

The Tigers held the lead into the last seconds of the game, and when Dayee hit one of two free throws with 13 seconds to play, the score was 82-79 in favor of FHSU.

On the ensuing trip down the floor, Adams missed a jumper from the right wing but was fouled on the attempt. He hit both free throws, cutting the lead to one with seven seconds to play.

Coming out of a timeout, Adams stole the Fort Hays State inbounds pass, and was fouled before he could get off a shot. He missed the first free throw, but connected on the second to knot the game at 82. Fort Hays State was unable to get off a shot before the buzzer sounded, so the game went into overtime.

The two teams traded buckets to start the OT period, but Fort Hays State took the lead for good when Dayee hit a three-pointer with 3:58 to play to make it 88-85 Tigers.

Fort Hays State extended the lead to as many as seven in overtime, but Adams and Missouri Southern wouldn’t go down without a fight.

With the Lions down 99-94 and 34 seconds left in the game, Adams hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to two (99-97).

When two Hays free throws moved the lead back to four at 101-97, Adams hit two free throws of his own to bring Southern back to within two.

Lance Russell looked to have iced the game for Fort Hays State with two more free throws on the other end to give the Tigers a 103-99 lead with just eight seconds left. However, another Adams three-pointer made it interesting, cutting the Hays lead to 103-102 with three seconds showing on the clock.

Missouri Southern fouled Fort Hays State with one second remaining to extend the game. After Omar McDade missed the first free throw, he intentionally missed the second one, and Southern was unable to get a shot off before time expired.

Kendrick Morse, McDade and Matt Simmons joined McKenzie and Dayee in double figures for Fort Hays State, scoring 17, 12, and 10 points, respectfully.

In addition to his spectacular scoring performance, Adams recorded eight rebounds and three assists for Missouri Southern. MIAA Player of the Year Keane Thomann added 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Lions.

Fort Hays State moves on to face No. 1 seed Washburn in the semifinals Saturday at 6 p.m. Missouri Southern, with a 22-7 overall record, now awaits its postseason fate.

Rawlins County and Oakley Advance in Ellis Sub-State

After Thursday night’s girls semifinal games, at the class 2A girls sub-state, Saturday’s championship game will feature two Northwest Kansas League teams.

In the first game of the evening the Rawlins County Buffaloes would prove to be too much for the Trego Golden Eagles. Rawlins County scored the first five points of the game and led 10-4 early behind four from Hillary Chavatal and three from Summer Castens. Trego trailed 12-8 after the first quarter.

The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the second quarter and tied the game at 12. Trego’s Haley Dietz scored four of her 12 points in the second quarter but Rawlins Country used a 7-0 run to take a 19-12 lead and the led by seven, 21-14, at half.

It was much of the same coming out of the halftime break. Rawlins Country built their largest lead of the game at 32-20 in the third quarter but Trego put together a strong 7-0 run led by Hannah Dietz who scored eight of her team-high 20 and Rawlins County led 39-27 after three. Trego cut the deficit to 41-39 to begin the fourth quarter but they would get no closer and Rawlins Country advanced to the sub-state Championship game with a 52-46 win.

Rawlins County’s Hilary Chavatal and Trego’s Hannah Dietz tied for a game-high 20 points. Keshia Green, who had not scored all season for Rawlins County added 10 and Summer Castens had nine. Trego’s Haley Dietz added 12 points. Rawlins County improved to 16-6 on the season and will play Oakley in the Sub-state Championship game while Trego’s season ended at 14-8.

The second game of the night was just as close with the Oakley lady Plainsmen earning the victory over the Hill City Ringnecks. Oakley quickly jumped out to an 8-3 lead to begin the game behind Carrie Pilkington who had four first quarter points. Hill City answered right back with a 6-0 run spurred on by eight first quarter points from Kelsey Keith as Hill City took an 11-8 lead. Oakley led 12-11 after one.

In the second quarter Hill City kept firing on all cylinders and built a 21-17 lead. Keith added six more points, Haley Dinkel scored four points and Shelby Stewart knocked in a three all in the second quarter to give Trego a 28-19 lead at halftime. Oakley though would jump out of the gate in the third quarter and own the second half.

Kenzie Weiser hit a three to start the third quarter and cut the lead to 28-22. Brooke Hemmert and Carrie Pilkington added four more points to tie the game at 34 and then as the quarter came to an end Laura Dennis drained a three at the top of the key to give Oakley a 37-34 lead. The fourth quarter would belong to Oakley, outscoring Hill City 13-3 in the final period to earn the 51-40 win.

Oakley’s Brooke Hemmert lead all scorers with 15 points, Carrie Pilkington added 12 and Laura Dennis finished with 11. Kelsey Keith scored all 14 of her points in the first half and led Hill City in scoring. Haley Dinkel was the only other Ringneck in double figures with 12.

Oakley improves to 17-5 and will take on Rawlins County in the finals on Saturday evening at 6pm while Hill City ends their season 13-9.

TMP Boys’ Basketball Season Ends with a Loss to Hoisington

The Monarch boys’ basketball team saw their season come to a close Thursday night after losing to Hoisington 63-48 in the Lyons Class 3A Sub-State Semifinals.

Hoisington (18-4) picked up the 3-0 sweep over Thomas More Prep – Marian this year defeating the Monarchs twice in the regular season on their way to getting the conference championship. TMP, who finished their season at 12-10, has yet to beat Hoisington since joining the Mid-Central Activities Association going 0-5 against the Cardinals in the last two years.

TMP had an electric start to the ballgame as Hoisington’s main two players, Cody Stetler and Derrick Kaiser, got in foul trouble in the first half. The Monarchs led by as many as eight in the second quarter and held a 29-24 lead at halftime.

TMP scored the first bucket of the second half to take a seven-point lead but then back-to-back 3-pointers by Kaiser made it a 31-30 contest just like that.

The Cardinals, the #1 seed in the Lyons Sub-State, would eventually tie the game up at 35 apiece midway through the third quarter and then go on a 12-1 run to take control of the game.

TMP was led in scoring by Jacob Fouts who ended with 11 points. The Herd did a good job defensively on the 6’8″ Stetler holding him to only six points while battling foul trouble, but the Cardinals had others step up to help their cause. Kaiser finished with 16 points while Trent Schremmer added 15.

TMP completed the year with one extra win than they had last season and also earned their first postseason victory since 2009. The Monarchs will lose eight seniors for next year.
