Central Missouri Outlasts Lady Tigers 73-61 In MIAA Championships

(MIAA Photo)

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Shaquanda Wiggins recorded a double-double, scoring 22 points and pulling down 11 rebounds, as No. 4 seed Central Missouri pulled away to defeat No. 5 Fort Hays State, 73-61, in the first round of the MIAA Centennial Women’s Basketball Championship Thursday afternoon at Municipal Auditorium.

In a game that featured three ties and eight lead changes, neither team led by more than four points until Fort Hays State went on an 8-0 run to take a 23-18 advantage with 7:54 to play in the first half.

The Tigers extended their lead to 28-21, their largest lead of the game, before Central Missouri battled back to make the score 33-29 in favor of Fort Hays State at halftime.

Central Missouri (20-7) came out strong with an 11-1 run to start the second half, kick started by a three-pointer by Taylor Hanson 14 seconds into the half, to give the Jennies a 40-34 advantage with 17:17 to play in the game.

Central Missouri would not give up the lead the rest of the game, but Fort Hays State kept it close throughout the majority of the second half.

The Tigers cut the Jennies’ lead to two at 44-42 on two Kimber Weiser free throws with 13:50 to play, but a 7-0 UCM run put the Jennies back up by nine (51-42) at the 11:46 mark of the second half.

Fort Hays State fought back once again with a 10-4 run of its own to trim the Central Missouri lead to 55-52 with 6:44 to play, but another run by the Jennies (14-4 over the next four minutes of play) put the game out of reach for the Tigers at 69-56 with just 2:06 left in the game.

Fort Hays State was led on the afternoon by Wesier with 13 points and four rebounds, as well as Traci Keyser with 13 points of her own to go along with three rebounds.

Nicole Caddell chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds for Central Missouri, while Alyssa Rhodes scored 14 points as well to go along with five rebounds.

Central Missouri moves on to face No. 1 seed Washburn in the semifinals Saturday at noon. Fort Hays State closes out its season with a 20-9 record overall.

3-Point Shooting Leads K-State To Road Win

(Dave McDonald/Bryan-College Station Eagle)

College Station, TX – Rodney McGruder posted a game-high 26 points as he helped guide Kansas State to a 76-70 win over Texas A&M in Big 12 Conference play at Reed Arena.

McGruder converted 5-of-7 shots behind the three-point line for the Wildcats (20-9, 9-8 Big 12) as they won for the third time in the last four outings and picked up their fifth Big 12 road win, clinching a winning conference road record for just the second time in the last 24 seasons and the first time since the 2009-10 campaign.

Jamar Samuels registered a double-double for the Wildcats with 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Angel Rodriguez delivered 13 points and five assists for the visitors.

The Aggies (13-16, 4-13) were paced by Elston Turner, one of four starters in double figures, with 22 points as he made good on all four of his three-point tries and 8-of-9 from the floor overall. David Loubeau accounted for 13 points, Ray Turner 12 and Dash Harris 11 points and five assists as the team suffered a fourth straight setback.

A&M led by as many as seven points in the first half, but the Wildcats knocked down an impressive 57.7 percent from the floor and an even more incredible 8-of-9 behind the three-point line, en route to a 44-33 lead at the break.

In the second half KSU made a total of just eight field goals, but half of those came from beyond the arc and the team also knocked down 12-of-14 at the free-throw line to secure the six-point win.

With the victory KansasStatenow has at least 20 wins for the 25th time in school history, including the sixth consecutive campaign. Frank Martin is the first KSU head coach to direct the program to five consecutive 20-win seasons.

Kansas Wins At Oklahoma State, Wins Big 12 Outright

(University Daily Kansan/Chris Neal)

Stillwater, OK – Tyshawn Taylor scored 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting and Thomas Robinson posted another double-double, as No. 3 Kansas claimed the outright Big 12 regular season title with a 70-58 victory over Oklahoma State.

Robinson totaled 17 points and 11 rebounds for his 21st double-double of the season for the Jayhawks (25-5, 15-2 Big 12), who shot 52 percent from the field to win their seventh straight game.

“I think if you asked us at the beginning of the year, our goal was to always win a Big 12 championship,” Taylor said. “We prepared like we wanted to win, we played a terrific non-conference schedule that prepared us for playing a tough conference.”

The Cowboys (14-16, 7-10) had won three straight at home, but were no match for a Kansas squad coming off an emotional overtime win over rival Missouri over the weekend.

Keiton Page, in his final game at Gallagher-Iba Arena, made seven three- pointers en route to a 29-point effort, while Brian Williams added 20 points in defeat.

Kansas led by double digits for most of the second half despite Page’s best efforts. The senior guard drained consecutive three-pointers with six minutes left to pull the Cowboys within 60-58, but Taylor answered with a three- pointer and a runner to push the margin back to a baker’s dozen.

The Cowboys called a timeout to regroup, but Taylor threw down a dunk and hit a three-pointer to cap a personal 10-0 run and put the game away.

“We couldn’t get over that hump that we needed to get over,” Page said. “We needed a couple of big plays to close that gap, and we just couldn’t get over the hump. We needed one big stop to get there and get the crowd in it.”

Oklahoma State shot just 32 percent from the field in the first half, and Taylor’s 11 points paced the Jayhawks to a 30-22 lead at the intermission.

TMP Boys’ Basketball Team Gets Postseason Win

BOYS:  TMP 62, St. John’s Military 48

The Monarch boys’ basketball team lost three of their last four games of the regular season but picked up a win at the right time Monday night against St. John’s Military Academy. Thomas More Prep – Marian defeated the Muleskinners 62-48 at Al Billinger Fieldhouse in the opening round of the Class 3A Lyons Sub-State.

TMP (12-9) trailed a few times in the first quarter but would eventually take a 29-20 lead into halftime. St. John’s Military (10-9) would cut the Monarch’s lead down to five early on in the third quarter, but TMP would finish the period on an 11-6 run to build their lead back up to 10 going into the fourth quarter.

The Monarchs, who shot 43% from the field, led by as many as 20 in the final quarter before going on to win by 14. TMP dished out 17 assists on their 26 made field goals in the game. Senior Drew O’Brien ended with nine of those 17 assists.

Robinson helped Kansas clinch at least a tie for its eighth-straight outright or shared regular-season Big 12 Championship. The Washington, D.C., forward began the week with 10 points and 13 rebounds in a 66-58 victory at Texas A&M. He followed that performance with 28 points and 12 rebounds as KU defeated No. 3 Missouri, 87-86 in overtime. Against the Tigers, he had 18 points in the second half and overtime, including a three-point play with 16 seconds remaining to tie the game. He also blocked MU’s shot at the end of regulation to guarantee the extra session. For the week, Robinson averaged 19.0 points and 12.5 rebounds, shooting 41.9 percent from the field and 85.7 percent from the line.

The four Big 12 Player of the Week honors for Robinson in 2011-12 is tied for the third-most in a season in conference history. The list of four-time honorees includes former KU great Drew Gooden in 2001-02, Texas’ Kevin Durant (2006-07) and P.J. Tucker (2005-06) and Iowa State’s Marcus Fizer (1999-00). All of the previous four-time honorees were later named the Big 12 Player of the Year.

With Robinson’s accolade, Kansas has won Big 12 Player of the Week seven times in 2011-12 by four different players – Robinson, Tyshawn Taylor, Travis Releford and Jeff Withey. The seven times is a season best for Kansas surpassing its six selections during the 2001-02 season.
