BOYS:  Trinity 43, TMP 37

Another poor shooting night cost the Thomas More Prep – Marian boys’ basketball team Thursday night in Hutchinson. The Monarchs wrapped up the regular season with a 43-37 loss to Trinity Catholic.

TMP (11-9) jumped out to a 16-8 lead in the first quarter and led by five at halftime 24-19 but could not hold on in the second half.

Trailing by four in the fourth quarter, TMP’s Colby Schippers hit a runner in the lane to get the Monarchs to within two at 37-35. The Celtics (11-9) would close the game on mini 6-2 run to hand TMP their second loss this week.

The Herd was led in scoring by Kelton Schuckman and Nick Hammeke who had eight points each. TMP struggled to contain Trinity’s post player, Dustin Ohl, in the second half. Ohl scored 13 of his 21 points in the final two quarters of play.

The Monarchs have little time to worry about Thursday’s loss. TMP, who earned the #4 seed in next week’s Lyons Sub-State, will host St. John’s Military Academy on Monday at Al Billinger Fieldhouse. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 PM.

No. 4 Kansas Holds Off Texas A&M

(Ashleigh Lee/University Daily Kansan)

College Station, TX – Elijah Johnson scored a team-high 21 points to lead No. 4 Kansas past Texas A&M, 66-58, in the final Big 12 clash between the two schools.

Tyshawn Taylor added 12 points, Jeff Withey contributed 11 and Thomas Robinson had 10 with 13 rebounds for Kansas (23-5, 13-2 Big 12), which earned its fifth straight win.

“He was huge. He got us off to a good start and shot the ball well,”Taylor said about Johnson. “We had kind of been waiting for him to get going.”

Khris Middleton netted a game-high 23 points for the Aggies (13-14, 4-11), who are leaving the Big 12 to join the Southeastern Conference next season. David Loubeau and Elston Turner each dropped in 10 points in Texas A&M’s sixth loss in seven games.

Kansasheld a 31-21 advantage at the break and opened the second half with a 16-5 swing to take its largest lead of the contest, 47-26, on Robinson’s three-point play with 13:25 left in the game.

The Aggies, though, would not go quietly, battling back with a 30-13 run over the next 11-plus minutes to close the gap to four, 60-56, with just under two minutes remaining.

Middleton had 11 points and Dash Harris had six in the run, which Harris capped with a shot from beyond the arc.

But Texas A&M would get no closer as the Jayhawks made enough free throws down the stretch and Zach Kinsley’s three-pointer that would have brought the Aggies within one with less than 30 seconds left in the game was no good.

Withey grabbed the rebound and sank both foul shots to seal the victory forKansas.

“You can’t giveKansasa 20-point lead on your home court and expect to play perfectly and win the game,”TexasA&M head coach Billy Kennedy said. “The only thing I can say is we didn’t throw in the towel. We had some opportunities.”

Johnson netted the game’s first five points in a 7-2 run byKansasto take the early lead, but the Aggies responded with six straight points to take an 8-7 advantage.

The lead changed hands fives times over the next four minutes, with the last exchange starting a 12-0 spurt by the Jayhawks to give them a 25-14 lead with a little over eight minutes left in the half.

Middleton put an end to the run with a three-pointer, butKansasoutscored the Aggies by a mark of 16-4 for the remainder of the half and held a 31-21 advantage at the break.

Texas A&M shot just 29 percent from the floor through the first 20 minutes and Kansas didn’t fare much better, shooting 38.7 percent while going 3-for-13 from three-point range.

Kate Lehman scored 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked four shots, leading the Fort Hays State Lady Tigers to their fifth-straight win, 72-61 over No. 11 Pittsburg State Wednesday night at Gross Coliseum.

The Tigers led by two at halftime, 31-29, but used an 11-5 run to go up eight on a Crista Bechard 3-pointer. They never let the Gorillas any closer than five the rest of the way.

The Tigers pulled away with free throw shooting, hitting 21 of their final 22 shots from the line and go 24-for-31 for the game.

Crista Bechard added 13 points, Kate Edwards 12 along with 10 rebound and Kaiameka Brown added 10 points.

Kansas State Upsets No. 3 Missouri

(AP Photo/L.G. Patterson)

Columbia, MO- For a second time this season,KansasStateended an unbeaten string for Missouri.

Rodney McGruder scored 24 points, asKansasStatetoppled third-ranked Missouri, 78-68, stopping the Tigers’ quest for a perfect home record this season.

“I was just very aggressive today. I was getting good looks and making my shots,” McGruder said. “We just stepped it up big on defense. That’s all that really happened. They made runs, but we just had to retaliate every time.”

On Jan. 7, K-State put together a solid performance in a 75-59 win, handingMissouriits first loss after a 14-game unbeaten streak to start the season.

Thomas Gipson added 13 points and Jamar Samuels had 11 rebounds for the Wildcats (19-8, 8-7 Big 12), who gained a second straight road win against a top-10 team for the first time in school history.

Tuesday’s battle was the final contest of three consecutive games against current top 10 foes. The Wildcats stunned then No. 9 Baylor, 57-56, on Saturday. Kansas State lost to Kansas on Feb. 13., but on Tuesday the Wildcats beat Mizzou for just the third time in their last 27 trips to Columbia.

Michael Dixon scored 21 and Marcus Denmon had 19 forMissouri(25-3, 12-3), which had a seven-game winning streak broken. They came into Tuesday with a 15-0 mark at home.

“Kansas State did some things well on the defensive end,” Denmon said. “I mean they made shots early that when you play good defense you don’t expect them to make. As far as scoring points on them, I think 68 points is enough to win a game, we just have to guard.”

Ricardo Ratliffe had nine points and 14 rebounds for Missouri, which had a frustrating first half by shooting 34.5 percent. A 10-2 spurt by the Wildcats moved them to a 33-22 lead. Will Spradling started the run with a three-ball and Samuels finished it with another shot from beyond the arc with four minutes left.

Kim English, who had nine points, five less than his season average, picked up a technical foul with 3 1/2 minutes left in the half after arguing a call that he climbed over the back of McGruder in an attempt for a rebound.

K-State held a 40-30 lead at the intermission and widened the gap to 61-45 with 12:32 left following a McGrudger layup, but the Tigers rallied with an ensuing 15-2 spurt, ended by English’s three from the top of the arc.

McGruder had an answer, though, burying a long-distance shot for a six-point advantage.

Mizzou didn’t get closer than four the rest of the way, the last time at 70-66 with 2:21 left on a pair ofDixonfoul shots. Jordan Henriquez came right back with a dunk to stem the tide.

The Wildcats, who finished 53.8 percent from the field, made 14-of-24 shots in the second half.

“That was the game plan, that’s how they win,” English said of K-State’s physical play. “That’s their mantra. They’re a physical team. We didn’t punch back early, and when you do that, when you play good teams, it’s an uphill battle all the way.”

Trego Boys and Girls Defeat Quinter

The Trego Golden earned a pair of wins on Senior night to wrap up the regular season. The Quinter Bulldogs travels East on I70 to Quinter in the final Tuesday night of the regular season in high school basketball. With both teams still have a lot to play for it would take overtime for the Bulldogs and the Golden Eagles to determine a winner in the girl’s game.

Trego really had it going early in the first quarter. The Eagles made eight of 10 field goal attempts and jumped out to a 12-2 lead. Hannah Dietz spurred the first quarter run, chipping in 7 and Haley Dietz added four as the Eagles led 17-4 after one. Quinter’s Missy Reed kept to Bulldogs in the game scoring their first 10 points and then the rest of her teammates picked her up in the second quarter as they outscored Trego 15-2. Brooke Flax added six of her 17 in the second quarter as well. The two teams were tied at 19 at the half.

Coming out halftime it was much of the same for Quinter. The Bulldogs opened the third quarter with an 11-2 run and led 30-22, eight was their largest lead of the game. Lexi Riedel helped the Eagles cut the gap to just five, 35-30 after three. Riedel added seven more in the fourth quarter helping erase a five-point deficit and tie the game at 49 at the end of regulation.

In the overtime period the Eagle went back to what had worked early on, going inside. Haley Dietz had 11 of her 19 points as the Eagles came away with the 65-61 win. Quinter’s Missy Reed led all scorers with 20 points and Brooke Flax added 17. Haley Dietz and Lexi Riedel both had 19 for Trego.

The Eagles improve to 13-7 with the win and Quinter dropped to 8-11.

In the boys game tonight the Trego Golden Eagles used the 3-point shot to jump out to an early lead but had to hold on and weather the storm late to earn the win.

After Trego open up a 4-0 lead the Quinter Bulldogs took and 15-11 lead behind Brian Ochs’ 8 first quarter points but Trego close to quarter on 10 nothing run to take a 21-15 lead after one. Despite giving up at least three inches, Trego Devin Ghumm went right at Ochs on the inside and scored 8 first quarter points.

After making two three pointers in the first quarter the Eagles began the second quarter with two straight from John Griffith and they made eight threes in the game, six came in the first half. Trego’s largest lead of the game was 19 at 50-31 at the half. Quinter however would not go away in the game outscoring Trego by 10 in the second half.

Quinter’s Brian Ochs scored 11 of his game-high 23 points in the third quarter and Freshman Brett Christ had 14 points in the second half. But Trego’s hot start to the game was just too much as they come away with a 86-75 win. The two teams combined to shot 62 free throws, although neither team make more that half.

Ochs led all scorers with 23 and Crist added 21 and Jesse Ochs finished with 17 points. Brad Pfannenstiel was the high man for Trego with 19, John Griffith had 17 and Clayton Riedel added 16. Trego improves to 9-12 with the win and the Bulldogs drop to 7-12.

Big Weekend Earns Lehman MIAA Weekly Award

(FHSU Athletics Photo)

Keane Thomann (Missouri Southern) and Kate Lehman (Fort Hays State) have been named MIAA Basketball Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Feb. 13-19 as selected by a conference SID panel.

Lehman led the Fort Hays State women’s basketball team to two road wins in three days over the weekend and extended the Lady Tigers winning streak to four games overall. Lehman had a double-double in both games, a 78-71 win over Southwest Baptist and a 67-58 win at Missouri Southern. She had 11 points and 13 rebounds to go along with four blocks as she helped the Lady Tigers win for the first time against Southwest Baptist in Bolivar on Thursday. On Saturday, Lehman turned in the best performance of her young career, finishing with career highs of 28 points and 17 rebounds in 34 minutes of play. She hit 13-of-14 attempts from the field, with her lone miss coming on her final attempt with just over two minutes to play in the game. She also added six blocked shots against the Lions. The 17 rebounds ties for the 10th-most in a game in FHSU history and was the most by an FHSU player in exactly three years.

For the week, Lehman averaged 19.5 points, 15.0 rebounds and 5.0 blocked shots per game. She also had two assists and made 78.3% (18-of-23) of her field goal attempts.

Lehman, a native of Newton, Kan., has made quite an impact for Fort Hays State in her first year with the program. She has blocked a Fort Hays State single-season record 87 shots, which is currently the top mark in NCAA Division II. She is also nearing the national lead in blocks per game, averaging 3.35. Lehman ranks second on the team in both scoring (10.4 ppg) and rebounding (7.5 rpg) and she has recorded eight double-doubles, with all of them coming during the past 13 games.

This is the first MIAA Player of the Week award for Lehman in her career and second by a Fort Hays State player this season after Katelyn Edwards earned the honor for the week of November 15. The Lady Tigers return to action on Wednesday evening (Feb. 22) against No. 8 Pittsburg State. That game will tipoff at 5:30 pm from Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.

TMP Girls Overcome Slow 1st Half to Beat Scott City

GIRLS:  TMP 61, Scott City 43

The Thomas More Prep – Marian girls’ basketball team had a slow start Monday night in Hays against Scott City but went on to win 61-43.

The Lady Beavers jumped out to a 10-2 lead to begin the game with TMP’s Jenna Lang on the bench. TMP, who has won nine straight games, received 19 points from Heather Ruder and an individual season-high 13 from Rebecca Pray.

The Lady Monarchs finished the season a perfect 7-0 on their home court this year. TMP, who has locked in the #1 seed for the Lyons Sub-State next week, will complete the regular season on the road against Trinity this Thursday.
