TMP Basketball Teams Sweep Larned

GIRLS:  TMP 53, Larned 22
After a slow start, the Thomas More Prep – Marian girls eased by Larned Tuesday night for a 53-22 victory at Al Billinger Fieldhouse. The game marked just the third time TMP has been at home for a game and are now 3-0 at the Fieldhouse.

The Lady Monarchs (12-3) only led 5-1 after the first quarter but held Larned without a field goal for over 12 minutes to start the game. Thanks to 11 points in the second quarter by senior Jenna Lang, TMP took a 22-6 lead into halftime. Lang finished with a game-high 18 points.

Larned (3-13) trimmed the lead to 12 early on in the third quarter, but TMP never saw their lead slip under 20 points in the fourth quarter.

Junior Heather Ruder added 14 points and senior Rachel Jacobs ended the night with 11.

The Lady Monarchs have now won five straight games and improved to 5-0 in conference play.

BOYS:  TMP 64, Larned 63
After blowing a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter, the boys from Thomas More Prep – Marian pulled out a 64-63 victory over Larned Tuesday night at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

The Monarchs were up 55-35 early on in the fourth quarter. Things would get sloppy for TMP (9-6) and Larned’s Jahman Hill could not miss from outside resulting in a a 28-5 run by the Indians.

Larned led 63-60 with 14 seconds remaining. After TMP brought the ball up across half court, coach Joe Hertel called a timeout to setup a potential game-tying 3-point shot. Out of the timeout, the Indians elected to foul and send the Monarchs to the free throw line preventing them from getting a shot off.

Junior Shane Zimmerman sank the first charity toss making it a two-point ballgame. Zimmerman intentionally missed the second and somehow the ball ended up in the hands of senior Kelton Schuckman who put it in with just over three seconds to go and drew a foul.

With the game knotted up at 63, the 71% free throw shooter Schuckman gave the Monarchs the lead after knocking down the free throw. Larned failed to get a good look at the end.

Schuckman finished with 18 points while Zimmerman ended with 11. Both were season highs for the players.

Hill closed the night with 26 points in the loss. Larned’s senior had 17 of his 26 in the fourth quarter.

TMP continues their home stretch this Friday night against Quinter.

Late Rally Lifts Missouri Over Kansas 74-71

(Rich Sugg/Kansas City Star)

Columbia, MO – Marcus Denmon’s personal surge late in regulation boosted No. 4 Missouri to a 74-71 win over eighth-ranked Kansas in the Border Showdown.

Denmon, who scored nine straight points during Missouri’s game-ending 13-0 spurt, canned a pair of three-pointers, including the one that gave the Tigers a 72-71 edge in the final minute.

Denmon, who ended with 29 points, went 6-of-9 from three-point range, as Missouri (21-2, 8-2 Big 12) won its third in a row to tie the Jayhawks and Baylor atop the conference standings. Kim English added 18 points in the final regular season conference meeting between the two teams in Columbia, as the Tigers are headed to the SEC.

Michael Dixon scored 15 and stood his ground by taking a charge from Tyshawn Taylor with 9.8 seconds remaining.

Thomas Robinson had 25 points and 13 rebounds for the Jayhawks (18-5, 8-2), who also received 21 points from Taylor.

After Denmon’s three gave the Tigers the lead, Taylor missed a pair of free throws off the back of the rim with 41.3 seconds left. But Phil Pressey couldn’t connect on the front end of a 1-and-1 and Kansas called timeout with 17.4 on the clock.

Dixon stood his ground to take the charge and made two free throws. Elijah Johnson’s wild three-point try from the top of the arc hit off the backboard as time expired.

Taylor’s dunk expanded the Jayhawks to a 71-63 advantage with 3:25 left, but then came the turnovers and Denmon’s offense that turned the tide. He converted a three-point play with 2:07 left to start the rally and made it a 71-69 game with a three-ball with 1:32 left before another long-distance make gave Mizzou the lead for good.

Denmon’s layup boosted the hosts to their largest lead of the night, 39-32, with 1 1/2 minutes left in the opening half. Taylor’s layup ended the period with the Jayhawks down 39-34.

A 9-2 surge gave the Jayhawks a 60-53 lead midway through the second half.

Central Missouri (No. 3) and Emporia State (No. 8) are both in the top 10 of the preseason national rankings. The Tigers finished fourth in the MIAA in each of the past two years.

FHSU begins its second season under head coach Steve Johnson on February 24 at West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas. The Tigers play a three-game series there before their home opening series against Northwest Missouri State, March 2-4.

The Tigers have five All-MIAA selections from last year returning to the 2012 team, which includes Nash Smith, Anthony Salinas, Brandon Hoefler, JC Ochoa, and Brett Macari. All five are seniors this year. FHSU Softball Picked 6th in MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll

(FHSU Athletics Photo)

The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) released its Preseason Coaches Softball Poll on Thursday (Feb. 2). Fort Hays State was picked sixth in a close vote, just two points behind fourth-place Central Missouri. Missouri Western, one of three teams to tie for the conference crown in 2011, received eight first-place votes and is the preseason pick to win the conference.

Fort Hays State, under the direction of first-year head coach Erin Kinberger, return four starters off of last season’s 30-22 club. FHSU finished seventh in MIAA play with an 11-11 record, but they advanced to the finals of the conference tournament before falling to Nebraska-Omaha.

The Tigers return three players who earned All-MIAA honors in 2011, led by first baseman Adriana Wortley. Wortley was a second-team All-MIAA choice as a junior and is a two-time all-conference and all-region pick and she is on the verge of breaking the school record for home runs in a career. Maddie Holub earned her second consecutive All-MIAA selection as a utility player last season after batting .313 and going 15-8 as a pitcher with a 2.27 ERA. Danie Brinkmann was an All-MIAA honorable mention selection at shortstop in 2011 and is the Tigers’ leading returner in batting average (.323) and hits (52).

Fort Hays State opens the 2012 season on February 14 with a home doubleheader against Nebraska-Kearney.
