Big Second Half Lifts No. 8 Kansas Past Oklahoma

(Travis Young/University Daily Kansan)

Lawrence, KS – Thomas Robinson netted 20 points and pulled down 17 rebounds as No. 8 Kansas thumped Oklahoma, 84-62, at Allen Fieldhouse on Wednesday.

Tyshawn Taylor finished with 21 points, while Jeff Withey put home 15 points for the Jayhawks (18-4, 8-1 Big 12), who bounced back from a tough 72-64 loss to Iowa State on Saturday. Travis Releford contributed 12 points and six rebounds in the victory.

“We played really well in the second half,”Kansashead coach Bill Self said. “In the second half we were active and got after it and really did a good job out in transition. We got the ball to the rack and guys finished really well.”

Romero Osby paced the Sooners (13-8, 3-6) with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Steven Pledger had 17 points. Andrew Fitzgerald donated 14 points in the loss forOklahoma, which failed to carry over momentum from a 63-60 win overKansasStateon Saturday.

Kansasjumped out to a quick 11-4 lead, capped by aTaylorslam with just over three minutes gone in the opening half.

A jumper by Fitzgerald snapped the run andOklahomascored five of the next seven points to climb within 13-11 with 12:46 to play in the first half.

Kansasresponded with the next five points to take an 18-11 lead, but a slam by Cameron Clark with 8:30 left in the half pulled the Sooners within five.

A trey by Elijah Johnson sparked a 10-4 burst to give the Jayhawks a 30-19 advantage with 5:37 left.

The Sooners closed the first half with a 12-4 run to get within three at the break, 34-31.

Kansasbroke the game open in the second half, opening the second stanza with a 14-4 burst, capped by a Robinson dunk to give the Jayhawks a comfortable 48-35 lead.

Kansascontinued to score and a trey byTaylorput the Jayhawks up 20 with 11:48 to play and they cruised to the easy win.

The Jayhawks shot an incredible 71 percent from the floor in the second half, while holdingOklahomato 40 percent en route to outscoring the Sooners, 50-31, in the half.

“I thought we battled pretty well for a half and then opened the second half not like we needed to,” Oklahoma head coach Lon Kruger said. ” I thought offensively we were very careless with the ball and we did not get what we wanted, which translated into transition points for (Kansas), going the other way. They are a terrific ball club and Bill does a great job, but we just can’t give them that opportunity to get up and get going like we did.”

Kansas State Blows Second Half Lead, Loses At Iowa State

(Charlie Neibergall/Associated Press)

AMES, Iowa— Royce White hit the game-winning jumper with 1.8 seconds left as Iowa State rallied from a 14-point deficit to beat Kansas State 72-70 on Tuesday night.

White finished with 22 points and Chris Allen had 15 for the Cyclones (16-6, 6-3 Big 12), who’ve won four of their last five.

Iowa State’s Chris Babb tied the game at 70 on a pair of free throws with 49 seconds left. The Cyclones then corralled a loose ball to gain possession with the shot clock off, and White drove to the baseline and floated in the deciding bucket from about 8 feet.

The Cyclones knocked the ball out of the hands of Kansas State’s Will Spradlin at the buzzer.

Thomas Gipson led the Wildcats (15-6, 4-5) with 13 points.

What appeared to be a pending Kansas State blowout developed into a crushing loss for the Wildcats.

Iowa State opened the second half looking out of sync, and the Wildcats took advantage of that sluggishness by expanding their lead to 14 points. Jamar Samuels capped a 10-2 run with a 3-pointer from the corner with 14:27 left, putting Kansas State ahead 53-39.

The deficit got the Cyclones’ attention, and by the midway point of the second half they’d cut it to 57-51 on a dunk through traffic by White. Allen made it a 60-58 game with a 3-pointer before Spradlin answered with a 3 of his own with 7:11 left.

Samuels, Rodney McGruder and Martavious Irving each scored 11 points for Kansas State.

The Wildcats had turned things around after a 1-3 start in the Big 12, beating Oklahoma State and Texas Tech on the road to reach .500 in the league. But Kansas State’s three-game winning streak was snapped Saturday with a 63-60 home loss to surprising Oklahoma.

Meanwhile, Iowa State was having its best Saturday in years.

The Cyclones took out then-No. 5 Kansas 72-64, giving coach Fred Hoiberg his biggest win yet.

That momentum didn’t carry over early, though, as the Wildcats raced ahead 36-29 at halftime.

Despite looking lifeless for much of the second half, the Cyclones had enough to engineer a comeback big enough to seal the victory.

Scott Christopherson chipped in with 11 points for Iowa State.

Ellis and Quinter Split a Pair of Games

The Ellis Railroaders and the Quinter Bulldogs tangled in a Tuesday night showdown at Ellis High School on the Y102 Area Game of the Week and the two teams would end up splitting the two games.

In the girls game the lady Railers jumped out early in a tight battle and led by just three after the first quarter, 10-7. Into the second quarter the tight battle continued, while neither offense was able to getting going. The two teams combined for seven points in the second quarter and Ellis led 13-11 at halftime.

The two offenses would wake up in the second half combining for 48 points. The Ellis lady Railroaders used a 7-0 run to take a 23-20 lead to end the third quarter. Ellis opened up with two straight baskets to extend their lead to seven, their largest lead of the night. Quinter answered back with an 8-0 capped by back-to-back threes, one by Kayla Zerr and the other by Brooke Flax, to take a 32-29 lead. Quinter was able to score on the final three possessions of the game to seal the 38-34 win.

Brooke Flax scored a game-high 10 for Quinter, Kayla Zerr and Kylie Werth both added 8 points. Mikayla Gottschalk led Ellis with 8 and Sara Mick, Bailey Hensley and Kaleigh Soneson each added 6 points.

The Lady Railroaders drop to 6-9 on the season while the Bulldogs improved to 5-9.

Unfortunately for the Quinter Bulldogs the boy’s game wouldn’t be so close. Quinter opened the game with a 5-4 lead in the first quarter and that would be the only time they would lead in the game. Quinter closed out the first quarter leading 13-9. The second quarter would be the one that would do in the Quinter Bulldogs tonight. The Railers opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run and led 17-9, when all was said and done in the second Ellis outscored Quinter 24-7 in the second and they never looked back as they cruised to a 64-39 win.

Luke Lohrmeyer fought off early fall trouble to lead all scorers with 14. Thatcher Brown added 10 and Tyler Walters and Jared Mick both added 9 for Ellis. Brain Ochs was the only Bulldog in double figures with 1, Logan Reed added 8 and Jesse Ochs finished with 7.

Ellis surpassed their win total from last season with their 9th win this season, they are now 9-6 while the Bulldogs drop to 5-9.

Quinter will take to the road on Friday in a MCL matchup with Smith Center and Quinter returns home to take on Oberlin-Decatur Community.

TMP-Marian Boys And Girls Basketball Sweep Ellinwood

GIRLS:  TMP 39, Ellinwood 28
Without their leading scorer, Rachel Jacobs, the Lady Monarchs earned a 39-28 victory Tuesday evening on the road against Ellinwood.

The Thomas More Prep – Marian girls had a cold shooting first half. The Lady Monarchs (11-3) did not receive their first field goal until the final second of the first quarter. TMP trailed 19-12 at halftime.

When these teams met up back in December TMP led 40-12 at halftime and went on to win 68-22 with a continuous clock in the second half. Without Jacobs (battling illness) and a new lineup for the Lady Eagles it was a much tougher win for TMP the second time around.

Ellinwood would score the first bucket of the third quarter to take a 21-12 lead, but the Lady Monarchs went on a 18-1 run after that to take control of the game.

Only three players scored for TMP who improved to 4-0 in conference play. Junior Heather Ruder set a career high back in December against Ellinwood when she scored 20 points. Ruder bested that amount by scoring 22 this time against the Lady Eagles. Senior Jenna Lang added 14 points and senior Rebecca Pray chipped in three.

The hot shooting from senior Nick Hammeke Tuesday night helped TMP get a 64-42 victory over Ellinwood on the road.

Hammeke connected on four 3-pointers and finished the night with a career high 25 points. The Monarchs snapped a three-game losing streak and improved their record to 8-6.

TMP trailed 9-2 early on after allowing Ellinwood’s Kyle Blakeslee to hit three straight 3-pointers. Blakeslee ended with a team-high 21 points for the Eagles. The Monarchs would respond with a 14-2 run to finish off the first quarter with a 16-11 lead.

TMP scored the first eight points of the second half and busted the game open from there. The Monarchs never led by less than 16 points in the fourth quarter.

Seniors Jacob Fouts and Kelton Schuckman completed the night with 12 and 10 points respectively.

TMP scored above 36 points for the first time in three games and moved to 3-1 in conference play.

Both Monarch teams will be in action this Friday night as they host Scott City at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

Consecutive Regular Season National Poll Streak Ends at 36 for FHSU

The latest release of the NABC Division II Men’s Basketball Poll is out and Fort Hays State’s school-record streak of regular season rankings comes to an end at 36. The Tigers drop out of this week’s poll following their loss at Northwest Missouri State Saturday. The Tigers were ranked No. 23 last week but are still receiving votes in this week’s poll.

The streak started in 2009-10 when the Tigers broke into the Top 25 in the third regular season poll released that season. The Tigers remained in the Top 25 for 13 consecutive polls that season. The Tigers ran their streak to 28 straight weeks as they were referenced in all 15 polls of 2010-11. It was just the third season in which the Tigers were in every regular season poll, joining the 1995-96 and 1996-97 teams to accomplish that feat. FHSU was just one of eight teams to be referenced in the Top 25 of all 15 polls last year.

After a hot 7-0 start, Fort Hays State was No. 24 in the first regular season poll of the current 2011-12 season. That matched the school record of being referenced in 29 consecutive regular season polls, which occurred from the 1995-96 season through the 1997-98 season. The Tigers broke that record by seeing their largest leap ever in consecutive polls, jumping 14 spots to No. 10 in the nation in the second poll of the season. FHSU reached as high as No. 8 in the nation in the fifth poll released, but have slowly faded down the rankings since. By remaining in eight consecutive polls to open the season, Fort Hays State ran its new record streak to 36 consecutive polls.

The MIAA still has two teams in the Top 25 this week, which includes Northwest Missouri State at No. 22 and Missouri Southern at No. 23. This is the second time Northwest Missouri has jumped into the Top 25 this season. Northwest Missouri is tied for the MIAA lead at 10-3 with Central Missouri, which received votes along with FHSU this week. Missouri Southern and FHSU are currently tied for fourth in the conference.

No. 22 K-State Loses At Home To Oklahoma

(Travis Heying/Kansas City Star)

Manhattan, KS – Steven Pledger poured in a game-high 30 points and pulled down five rebounds as Oklahoma squeezed past No. 22 Kansas State, 63-60, on Saturday.

Cameron Clark finished with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor to go with six rebounds for the Sooners (13-7, 3-5 Big 12), who snapped their brief two-game losing streak.

Rodney McGruder paced the Wildcats (15-5, 4-4) with 19 points, while Angel Rodriguez added 10 points and Jamar Samuels donated nine points to go with eight rebounds in the loss. Kansas State had its three-game winning streak snapped.

Trailing, 51-49, with 5:27 to play in regulation, Pledger knocked down a three-pointer to give the Sooners a 52-51 lead, one they did not relinquish.

Pledger drained another trey to give his team a little breathing room at 55-51 with under five minutes to play.

Jamar Samuels netted a pair of free throws to pull the Wildcats within two with 3:12 left, but Oklahoma came up with a big bucket on their ensuing possession courtesy of a layup by Sam Grooms with 2:51 left. The Sooners regained their four-point lead at 57-53.

McGruder drained a big three for Kansas State with 2:15 left to pull them within 57-56, but a pair of free throws by Pledger following a foul on McGruder gave the Sooners a three-point margin with just over a minute to play.

Will Spradling put home a layup with 48 seconds left to again get Kansas State within one, but Romero Osby calmly stepped to the line and knocked down two of his four points with nine seconds left, and Grooms stroked two more free throws with only five seconds remaining to finish off the upset victory.

The game remained close throughout the majority of the first half, with Oklahoma holding a 23-22 lead with 4:25 to play in the opening 20 minutes.

A layup by Spradling put Kansas back up, 25-24 with 3:25 left, but Oklahoma closed out the first half on a 10-3 run to lead 34-28 at the break.

Oklahoma opened the second half with the first four points to expand its lead to 38-28 early in the stanza, but Kansas State answered with a 12-2 flurry to tie the game at 40 with just over 13 minutes to play.

The game went back-and-forth from there until Martavious Irving drained a trey to give the Wildcats the 51-49 edge.

Hays High Lady Indians Come Up Short In Mid America Classic Title Game

Hays High made a run at knocking off three straight undefeated opponents at the Mid-America Classic in McPherson, but came up short of beating host school McPherson 52-42 on Saturday night in the title game.

Hays led early 9-2 and still led by seven midway through the second quarter 19-12 putting a worrisome feeling into the McPherson faithful that they might be the next undefeated team to fall to Hays High.  McPherson though would go on a 14-2 run highlighted by four three pointers from Hailey Ruder, who had just five made three point field goals all season prior to the tournament.

Hays High did lead by one at half time and in the early 3rd quarter but were outscored 20-6 in the third and a 15 point deficit in the early fourth proved too much for Hays High to overcome, though they did make things interesting getting within seven late.  Second place is the best finish for Hays High at the McPherson tournament and Hays has gone 4-2 over the past two years at one of the toughest girls tournaments in the state.

Hays was led in scoring by Paige Lunsford with 21 points.  Paige scored 60 points in the tournament and was the leading scorer over the three games.  The 60 points also tied for 9th all-time for points in three games by a senior player.  Lunsford finishes her four years at the Mid-America Classic with 143 points and ranks 10th all-time for career points for a four year player.  Lunsford also broke the record for most free throws made in three games at the tournament with 23, breaking the previous record by three.  Lunsford made 23 of 28 free throws in the tournament.

Katelyn Schumacher finished the tournament with 29 rebounds and had the second highest tally for the three games.

Taylor Herman topped the tournament with six blocks over the three days.

Both Lunsford and Schumacher were named to the all-tournament team.  It is the first time that Hays has had a player given such an honor.  The Indians also were given the team sportsmanship award as well.

Earlier in the day Lunsford finished in a tie for first in the three point contest, but was awarded second after a shoot-off.

Hays drops to 8-4 on the season and will be home on Tuesday, January 31st to take on Salina South in a girls and boys double header.
