No. 15 FHSU Wrestling Comes Up Just Short At No. 15 Adams State

No. 11 Adams State won three of the last four matches to erase a 16-6 deficit and defeated No. 15 Fort Hays State on Thursday night (Jan. 19) in Alamosa, Colo. The close dual saw both teams win five matches each. The loss dropped the Tigers to 3-2 in duals and 2-2 in the RMAC.
After falling behind 16-6, the Grizzlies won two straight to pull even at 16-16. ASC’s Jerry Huff scored six points with a pin of FHSU’s Collin Hase in the 125-pound match to cut the Tiger lead to just four at 16-12. A major decision win by No. 4 Ryan Fillingame at 133 tied the match at 16 as Fillingame defeated Kyle Johnson 11-0.
The Tigers pulled ahead, 19-16, after CJ Napier scored three points with a 4-2 decision win over ASC’s Casey Lynn at 141. However, the Tigers lead didn’t last as No. 4 Josh Hensley of ASC scored a tech fall in the final match (16-0) to push the Grizzlies to a 21-19 win over the visiting Tigers.
FHSU built the 16-6 advantage by winning four of the first six matches, including three straight. Sam Thoman (165) pinned Justin Samora at 1:58 to give the Tigers their first win and a 6-3 lead. Benny Armstrong followed the Thoman victory with a win of his own at 174 pounds, defeating Jarrod Purvis in an 8-6 decision to increase the score to 9-3. The Tigers made it three straight wins and upped the score to 13-3 as Josh Rodriguez scored a major decision win (11-2) over Darian Roberts at 184 pounds.
After a Grizzlies win at 197, Justin Glenn extended the advantage back to 10 at 16-6, defeating Taylor Stam in a 10-5 decision at 285.
The Tigers return to action in 10 days in the Kansas Cup on Jan. 29 in Baldwin City, Kan. The event starts at 9 a.m.

Kansas State’s Henriquez Suspended Indefinitely
(AP) – Kansas State coach Frank Martin has suspended junior forward Jordan Henriquez indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team.
Martin said Thursday that he and Henriquez will meet sometime next week and discuss his status. In the meantime, Henriquez will not practice with the 25th-ranked Wildcats (13-4, 2-3 Big 12).
The 6-foot-11 Henriquez had two points and two rebounds in 8 minutes in Kansas State’s 84-80 victory over Texas on Wednesday night.
Henriquez has played in all 17 games this season, starting six, and is averaging 7.1 points and 5.1 rebounds in 18.9 minutes.

No. 25 Kansas State Ends 2-Game Skid With Win Over Texas

Manhattan, KS- Enduring five missed free throws in the final 35 seconds Wednesday night, No. 25 Kansas State came up with a key steal down the stretch to beat Texas and snap its two-game losing streak.
Rodney McGruder scored the last of his game-high 33 points on a fastbreak dunk following the steal to punctuate the Wildcats’ 84-80 win over the Longhorns.
Jamar Samuels added 14 points forKansasState(13-4, 2-3 Big 12) while Will Spradling and Thomas Gipson scored 11 apiece.
J’Covan Brown had 22 points to lead Texas (12-6, 2-3) and Sheldon McClellan scored 19, but the Longhorns lost their second straight despite being gifted chances at the end of the game.
“Our guys fought, we battled,”Texashead coach Rick Barnes said.
McGruder, Spradling and Angel Rodriguez were a combined 1-for-6 from the foul line in the last 34.9 seconds, with McGruder and Rodriguez both missing a pair.
Texastrailed by as many as 15 points in the first half and was down seven on a Martavious Irving foul shot that made it 80-73KansasStatewith 74 seconds left.
But the Longhorns got a spark from Brown’s long three-pointer at the other end and cut their deficit all the way to one asKansasStatemissed free throws.
Texaseven escaped its own clumsiness after knocking the rebound out of bounds on Hernandez’s second miss. McGruder then missed a pair with 30.8 seconds left andTexaspulled within 81-80 on McClellan’s dunk with 20.3 ticks showing.
Spradling clanked his first free throw off the rim — Kansas State’s fourth miss in a row — but made the second, setting up the final breathless seconds.
Crossing half court,Texasguard Myck Kabongo tried to hand the ball off to Brown on the right side but it was lost in the exchange, stolen by Irvingto set up McGruder’s dunk for the 84-80 lead.
“I was taking out my frustration because I had just missed two free throws,” McGruder said of his funk.

FHSU Holds On For Overtime Win At Emporia State
The Fort Hays State Tigers nearly blew an 11-point second half lead, but score the final six points in overtime to defeat the Emporia State 72-67 Wednesday night in Emporia.
The Tigers led 46-35 with 14:27 to play, but the Hornets battled back to tie the game at 62. Fort Hays had a chance to win in regulation but a shot from Kendrick Morse rimmed out at the horn.

The Tigers hit six 3-pointers in the first half including one from Moses Dayee in the final seconds of the first half to lead 33-27 at the break. They trailed by five early but answered with a 10-0 run and led by as many eight in the first frame.

Page Sisters, Wamego Run Past TMP Girls in Trojan Classic
The Lady Monarchs’ hopes of winning four straight Trojan Classics in Hillsboro came to an end Tuesday afternoon after a 57-43 loss to Wamego in the first round.
Thomas More Prep – Marian, who entered the tournament as the 5-seed, held a brief 5-4 lead in the first quarter but witnessed a 7-0 run by the Lady Red Raiders to close out the quarter. TMP (7-3) got within four points on a few occasions in the third quarter but the steady play by Wamego never let them get any closer.
The Lady Monarchs had to contend with the talented and tall Page sisters from Wamego (7-1). The 6’2″ sophomore Kaylee Page finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds. The 6’1″ freshman Lanie Page ended with 14 points and 8 rebounds. The sisters’ combined 42 points nearly outscored TMP’s team total of 43 points.
TMP, who saw their five-game winning streak come to an end, was led by senior Rachel Jacobs who went for 13 points, five rebounds, and seven steals in the loss. Both senior Jenna Lang and junior Heather Ruder finished with 12 points for the Lady Monarchs.
For the TMP seniors, this is their first loss at Hillsboro High School. The Lady Monarchs, the three-time defending champion of the Trojan Classic, fall to the consolation side of the bracket.
TMP will face Goodland on Friday at 3 PM. The #8 Cowgirls lost to #1 Hillsboro Tuesday evening. Our coverage gets started at 2:40 with the Fort Hays Auto Sales Pregame Show on 14 KAYS and Hayspost.com

FHSU Drops To No. 25 In Latest NABC Division II Poll
The Fort Hays State Tigers drop six spots but remain ranked in this week’s NABC Division II Coaches’ Poll released Tuesday. The Tigers fall from 19th to No. 25 and have now been ranked in 35-straight regular season polls.
The 35-consecutive week streak of being ranked in the NABC regular season poll is the longest ever for Fort Hays State. The Tigers eclipsed the old mark of 29, which started with the first regular season poll of the 1995-96 undefeated national championship season for the Tigers and ended on the ninth poll of the 1997-98 season, in the second regular season poll this year.
The Tigers have now been ranked in 48 regular season polls under 11th-year head coach Mark Johnson. All of those polls have been since the 2005-06 season, a year that saw the Tigers reach the No. 1 ranking in the nation.
Missouri Southern, who beat the Tigers last Monday, moves up seven to No. 16. Northwest Missouri State, who was ranked 24th last week, drops out of this week’s poll.
