TMP Boys over Winfield 63 to 61

TMP holds on in overtime against Winfield in Trojan Classic

The Monarch boys survive Monday afternoon’s game against Winfield in the opening round of the Trojan Classic by getting a 63-61 overtime win in Hillsboro.

Thomas More Prep – Marian held a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter before the Vikings (3-6) went on an 11-0 run to regain the lead at 51-49. The teams went back and forth after that before Winfield’s last-second shot misfired sending the game into overtime at 54-54.

Winfield, who finished 8th in last year’s Classic, scored the first bucket of overtime but TMP’s Shane Zimmerman connected on a 3-pointer to give the Monarchs (7-3) a 57-56 lead. TMP would hit enough free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.

TMP’s Taylor Pfeifer finished with a game-high 17 points and Nick Hammeke added 16.

The Herd move on to play in the championship semifinals Friday evening at 8 PM. TMP, the 2-seed in this year’s tournament, will face either Hillsboro or Goodland who square off Tuesday night.

Kansas Overcomes Sluggish In Blowout Win At Texas Tech

(AP Photo/Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Stephen Spillman)

Lubbock, TX  – Thomas Robinson had 19 points and 12 rebounds on Wednesday and No. 10 Kansas overcame a sluggish start to beat Texas Tech, 81-46.

The Jayhawks trailed with 7 1/2 minutes left in the first half, then went on a 27-5 run that bled into the second half and put the game away.

Tyshawn Taylor added 15 points for Kansas (13-3, 3-0 Big 12) and Travis Releford scored 12. The Jayhawks have won six games in a row since being upset by Davidson in shocker on December 19.

“I thought we did some good things defensively,” Kansas head coach Bill Self said. “Now, they shot it miserably and you can’t take credit for defense when they miss open looks. I thought for the most part we did a good job. and we really rebounded pretty good the second half.”

Javarez Willis had 12 points to lead the Red Raiders (7-8, 0-3) and was the only Texas Tech scorer in double digits.

Kansas out-shot the Red Raiders 50.9 percent to 31.4, but needed to snap out of a funk to take control after DeShon Minnis’ free throws gave Texas Tech a 16-15 lead.

The Jayhawks scored 20 of the final 24 points in the last 7:24 of the first half to take a 35-20 lead into the break.

They opened the second half on a 7-1 burst with Taylor and Robinson making layups at the end. Robinson’s three-point play made it 42-21, ending the long 27-5 run after about 10 minutes of game time.

Kansas’ lead reached as high as 40 on a Naadir Tharpe three-pointer to make it 76-36 with 3:50 remaining.

“Just a real good whipping and I don’t like it but it doesn’t look like our players don’t like it as much as I don’t like it and give all the credit to Kansas they have a nice team and were able to do whatever they wanted on both ends of the court and we didn’t give them any opposition at all,” Texas Tech head coach Billy Gillispie said.

TMP Boys Hammered by Abilene 74-46

It was not a good evening for Thomas More Prep – Marian in Abilene Tuesday night as the boys got ripped by the Cowboys 74-46.

The Monarchs held a brief 6-2 lead early on in the first quarter but then were outscored 34-13 to finish the half.

Abilene had 10 players score in the contest including a game-high 22 points by junior Andy Wilson. TMP (5-3) received 13 points from senior Jacob Fouts. Fouts has now scored in double figures in all of the Monarchs’ games except one.

Abilene now 8-0 on the season moved up to #5 in the latest Kansas Basketball Coaches Association rankings in Class 4A.

TMP saw their five-game winning streak come to an end and will host Russell this Friday for their only home game of the month.
