Tebow Time Is Back, Broncos Defeat Steelers

(AP Photo/Joe Mahoney)

Denver, CO – And on the second day of the NFL playoffs, the Denver Broncos rose again.

Tim Tebow and Demaryius Thomas connected for an 80-yard touchdown on the first play of overtime, giving the Broncos a 29-23 victory over the Steelers and providing a stunning ending to their AFC Wild Card contest.

Now Denver, which won its division despite losing its final three regular- season games and finishing the year 8-8, is onto the second round of the playoffs. The Broncos will face top-seeded New England on Saturday.

Denver, of course, installed Tebow as its starting quarterback in Week 7 after starting the season 1-4. He then led the Broncos to wins in seven of their next eight games, a stretch that included three overtime victories and a string of improbable late-game comebacks.

The Broncos’ magic seemed to run out with their season-ending losing streak, but Sunday, they re-discovered it, building a 20-6 lead at halftime behind an extremely productive second quarter.

Pittsburgh came back to tie the game and force overtime, but then…

…the Broncos won the coin toss and started a drive after a touchback…

…Tebow dropped back in a play-action fake and spotted Thomas about 20 yards downfield, delivering a strike the receiver caught in stride…

…Thomas streaked across midfield and delivered a stiff-arm to Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor, then out-raced two defenders to the end zone…

…and 11 seconds into overtime, the Broncos were celebrating wildly and Tebow was on one knee, having authored the best victory of his young NFL career.

The second-year quarterback finished with a career-high 316 passing yards and two touchdowns, and ran for another score in Denver’s first playoff appearance since 2005.

He completed only 10 passes, but made the most of them as the Broncos repeatedly beat the Steelers’ secondary. Thomas caught four passes for 204 yards, while Eddie Royal had a 30-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter.

Part of that was due to Tebow having and creating a lot of time to throw, but Pittsburgh also played without safety Ryan Clark because he has a sickle cell trait, and high altitude can lead to health problems.

Clark was one of several key Steelers to sit out of the contest. Running backs Rashard Mendenhall and Mewelde Moore, and center Maurkice Pouncey also missed the game, while defensive tackle Casey Hampton and defensive end Brett Keisel suffered injuries during the game.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was battling a high ankle sprain, and threw for 289 yards and a touchdown, with one interception. Isaac Redman totaled a career-high 121 rushing yards, but they couldn’t lead the Steelers to a decisive score late in the fourth quarter. Roethlisberger was sacked three times and fumbled during the unsuccessful drive.

For how the game ended, the defending AFC champions nearly won Sunday’s contest. Shaun Suisham connected on a 37-yard field goal to bring the Steelers within 23-16 with 10 minutes to play, and Broncos running back Willis McGahee fumbled near midfield on Denver’s ensuing drive.

After Pittsburgh reached the Denver 31, Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey nearly picked off Roethlisberger’s end-zone try to Mike Wallace, but couldn’t hold on. Roethlisberger tried another touchdown pass on the next play and succeeded, thanks to a remarkable catch by Jerricho Cotchery in the end zone.

The receiver got his hands on the ball, then held on as Denver defensive back Rafael Bush hit him, tying the contest with 3:48 to go.

Just more than two minutes later, Pittsburgh had forced Denver to punt and began another drive at its own 24. Roethlisberger — himself no stranger to big plays — completed passes of 17 and 18 yards to bring the ball into Denver territory.

With half a minute to play, Suisham was warming up on the sideline, and all signs pointed to Pittsburgh having a chance to at least kick the game-winning field goal.

But the Steelers lost that chance after Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil got into the backfield and forced the ball from Roethlisberger’s hands. Pittsburgh lost 11 yards on the play and the Steelers couldn’t get into field goal range.

Pittsburgh, which finished the regular season 12-4 and didn’t win the AFC North because it lost both games against Baltimore, never got a chance in overtime.

New playoff overtime rules state that both teams get a possession unless the team with the ball first scores a touchdown. Had the Broncos kicked a field goal, the Steelers would have gotten the ball. But Roethlisberger never touched the ball in overtime. Tebow and Thomas, in one swift play, made sure of that.

The Steelers certainly had their chances to build a big lead, advancing deep into Denver territory twice in the first quarter. But they settled for field goals from Suisham both times, and carried a 6-0 lead into the second quarter.

The Broncos went in front thanks to one quick drive. Tebow didn’t complete a pass in the opening quarter, but on the second play of the next quarter he found Thomas for a 51-yard gain. Two plays later, Tebow threaded a pass to the end zone to Royal, who made the catch despite tight coverage from William Gay.

Tebow delivered more big plays on Denver’s next drive, including a 58-yard pass down the middle to Thomas, who shed coverage by Taylor with a sharp open- field fake.

That connection brought the ball to the Steelers’ 12-yard line, and Tebow reached the end zone on an eight-yard keeper by plowing through a hole in the middle of the line. Matt Prater hit field goals of 20 and 28 yards to complete the 20-point quarter.

Pittsburgh’s offense struggled in the first half. Aside from the two field goals, the Steelers punted four times and Roethlisberger was intercepted by Quinton Carter.

They had only one possession in the third quarter, but made the most of it with an 87-yard touchdown drive. Redman initially appeared to score on a long run through the middle. But the touchdown ruling was overturned with a review that found the ball fell short of the goal line by inches. Still, the 33-yard run brought Pittsburgh to the one, and Wallace ran it in from there, pulling the Steelers within 20-13 with 4:29 left in the frame.

Prater kicked a 35-yarder nearly two minutes into the fourth.

Career Day From Releford Helps No. 14 Kansas Past Oklahoma

(University Daily Kansan/Ashleigh Lee)

Norman, OK  – Travis Releford scored a career-high 28 points as No. 14 Kansas used a dominating second half to pull away for a 72-61 victory over Oklahoma at Lloyd Noble Center.

Releford connected on 9-of-13 shots, including a 3-for-5 mark from three-point range on the way to his career-best performance for the Jayhawks (12-3, 2-0 Big 12). Thomas Robinson added 18 points and nine rebounds in Kansas’ fifth straight win.

Steven Pledger paced Oklahoma (10-4, 0-2) with 14 points, while Andrew Fitzgerald and Carl Blair each netted 11 for the Sooners, losers in three of their last four.

Oklahoma held a 34-33 lead after the first 20 minutes while making 47.8 percent of its shots and holding Kansas to 42.4 percent shooting from the floor.

But the second half was a completely different story, with the Sooners connecting on just 29.6 percent of their shots and scoring six points through the first 11 minutes of the half.

Kansas dropped in 29 in that span to jump out to a 62-40 lead with under nine minutes to play and the Jayhawks cruised to the victory from there, leading by double digits for the remainder of the game.

“I thought that the 10 minutes, or whatever it was, to start the second half was probably the best run we’ve had all year,” Kansas head coach Bill Self said. “That 10 minutes was enough to put us over the top.”

After Kansas took an early 2-1 lead on Elijah Johnson’s layup, Oklahoma reeled off a 9-3 run to take their largest lead of the game, 10-5.

The Jayhawks, though, quickly answered with a 13-3 spurt that included nine points by Releford to equal Oklahoma’s five-point lead at 18-13.

However, a Fitzgerald jumper followed by a Pledger three-pointer on back-to- back possessions by the Sooners knotted that game at 18 and it remained a one- possession game for the rest of the first half, with Oklahoma recording four of the final six points to take a 34-33 lead into the break.

“I think we came out in the first half and were really strong on both ends of the court. We seemed very active and that’s a fun way to play,” said Oklahoma forward Romero Osby. “The second half we kind of got staggered and we started standing around too much on both ends of the court, and we let things slip away from us.”

Strong Finish To First Half Leads FHSU Women Past Southwest Baptist

(FHSU Athletics Photo)

The Fort Hays State Lady Tigers closed out the first half on 13-4 run to build a 13-point over Southwest Baptist at the half and go on to defeat the Bearcats 64-55 Saturday afternoon at Gross Coliseum.

After SBU scored the first five points to start the second half, the Tiger respond with a 13-2 run to go up 19 with 12:29 to play. The Tigers led by as many as 21 in the second half.

Fort Hays State missed all of their ten shots in the final 5:06 of the game allowing the Bearcats to close the game on a 13-1 run.

Traci Keyser led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points. Melissa Nelson scored 12 with Kate Edwards and Kaiameka Brown both adding 10. Kate Lehman added eight points and eight rebounds

FHSU shot 39-percent from the floor including 6-of-21 from 3-point range but outrebound SBU 41-30. The Tigers had 15 offensive rebounds while holding the Bearcats to four.

The Tigers improve to 13-2 and 5-2 in the MIAA. They are back at home Monday to play Missouri Southern at 5:30pm.

Arkansas Beats Kansas State 29-16 in Cotton Bowl

(AP Photo/Matt Strasen)

Explosive returner Joe Adams had one last big highlight to help No. 7 Arkansas end a record-tying season in tall Cotton.

All-SEC quarterback Tyler Wilson was well short of the record passing performance he had earlier this season at Cowboys Stadium, but did throw two touchdown passes after Adams’ fourth punt return for a TD and the Razorbacks beat No. 11 Kansas State 29-16 in the Cotton Bowl on Friday night.

The Razorbacks (11-2) matched a school record with their 11th victory. Their only losses were to No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama, their SEC West rivals who will play for the BCS national championship Monday night.

“Joe Adams has made big plays for us all year long,” Wilson said. “We were struggling offensively until he sparked us. Great players make big plays, and he definitely got his.”

Adams’ 51-yard return early in the second quarter gave the Razorbacks a 10-0 lead before they even gained a first down. It was the first punt return for a touchdown in the Cotton Bowl in 51 years.

“It was another one of those where you just go, Wow!” coach Bobby Petrino said. “You could see when he made the catch he had in mind what he was going to do. We got some good blocks. … Joe showed great acceleration, made another spectacular play for us.”

Adams matched the SEC single-season record with his four punt return TDs. The senior receiver, who had five catches for only 22 yards Friday, was the only FBS player this season with multiple punt returns for TDs, along with rushing and receiving scores.

After fielding the ball near midfield, Adams took a few steps back before squirting through a gap past several defenders. He got all the way to the opposite sideline and got his path cleared by one last block from Javontee Herndon downfield.

“It obviously made a major difference,” Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said. “We knew he’s a talented player.  We knew that he could make you miss him.  …. The players were probably tired of me talking about being able to contain Joe Adams and not let him bounce the ball outside.  Sure enough he bounced it outside.”

The last punt return for a touchdown in the Cotton Bowl also was by a Razorback, when Lance Alworth had a 49-yard return in a 7-6 loss to Duke in the 1961 game.

The only other 11-win seasons for the Razorbacks were by the Lou Holtz-coached team in 1977 and coach Frank Broyles’ only undefeated season at Arkansas in 1964. They won 10 games last season with a Sugar Bowl appearance.

“To get this program consistently in the top 10, in BCS bowl games, great bowl games like the Cotton Bowl, hopefully in the top five in the country with 11 wins, it means so much to me personally, and to this group of seniors,” defensive end Jake Bequette said. “It’s just been such a fun ride.”

A member of that 1964 team that won the Cotton Bowl over Nebraska was Jerry Jones, the Dallas Cowboys owner who attended the game in his $1.2 billion stadium that opened in 2009. He was part of a loud crowd of 80,956.

Kansas State also was trying to match its school record with 11 victories, but still finished a surprising season in Snyder’s second Wildcats turnaround. K-State won 11 games six times during a seven-year span in Snyder’s first tenure before his three-year retirement, and almost reached that mark again in his third season back.

K-State Announces $75 Million Expansion Project At Football Stadium

Kansas State is planning a $75 million expansion project at its football stadium.

Athletic director John Currie said Thursday that the six-phase project on the west side of the stadium will replace the press box and add concession areas, restrooms, luxury seating and an expanded ticket office.

Currie announced the plans during a pep rally in Arlington, Texas, as the Wildcats prepare for Friday’s Cotton Bowl game against Arkansas. The project is the most ambitious athletics facility upgrade in the school’s history.

Currie says Kansas State has raised roughly one-third of the money needed to start the project. The goal is to start construction before the 2012 season.

No. 12 FHSU Wrestling Falls Short At CSU-Pueblo

(FHSU Athletics Photo)

The 12th-ranked Fort Hays State wrestling team suffered its first dual loss of the season on Thursday evening at CSU-Pueblo by a score of 18-15. The ThunderWolves won six of the 10 matches within the dual. Fort Hays State is now 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the RMAC. CSU-Pueblo moved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the RMAC.

The Tigers got an early jump on the ThunderWolves as Collin Hase dialed up a pin in 2:00 over Dustin Appelt at 125 pounds, giving FHSU a 6-0 advantage.

The Thunderwolves cut that lead in half when their ranked wrestler, Jesse Hillhouse, defeated Kyle Johnson by a 6-1 decision. Hillhouse is ranked No. 4 at 133 pounds.

C.J. Napier came out victorious in his first match of the year for FHSU, defeating Marc Fisher by a tight 5-4 margin, pushing the FHSU lead back to six at 9-3.

The Thunderwolves once again climbed within three as Nick Stahler defeated Joey Dozier at 149 pounds 9-4.

Derek Koehn continued the see-saw trend in the dual, pushing the FHSU lead back to six points with a 3-1 sudden victory overtime win over Levi Jutila at 157 pounds. From that point, CSU-Pueblo went on a run that the Tigers could not overcome.

The Thunderwolves went on to claim the 165, 174, 184, and 197 pound matches to build an 18-12 lead. Matt Addington picked up a close victory over Sam Thoman at 165 pounds by a 7-6 decision, then Trevor Grant tied the dual with an 8-3 win over Benny Armstrong at 174. Adam Carey gave the ThunderWolves the lead with a 10-5 decision over Aaron Berscheidt at 184 pounds and then Cody Johnson knocked off Tanner Kriss 2-0 at 197 pounds. That gave the ThunderWolves a six-point cushion heading into the final weight, securing no worse than a tie.

The Tigers needed Justin Glenn to pick up a fall to get a draw in the dual, but it was not to be. He did win the match by a 3-1 decision over Bill Gray, but the ThunderWolves locked up the dual win by three points.

Fort Hays State continues its busy week of action on Sunday when it hosts Chadron State in another RMAC dual at 6 pm in Hays.

No. 14 Kansas Defeats No. 23 Kansas State

(AP Photo/Orlin Wagner)

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Thomas Robinson had 15 points and 14 rebounds and helped thwart Kansas State’s second-half rally Wednesday night, leading No. 14 Kansas past the 23rd-ranked Wildcats 67-49.

Trailing by as many as 18 points early, the Wildcats (11-2, 0-1 Big 12) got 3-pointers from Jamar Samuels and Rodney McGruder in a 10-0 run and closed to 39-36. But Conner Teahan’s two 3-pointers triggered a rally by Kansas (11-3, 1-0) that included dunks by Robinson on consecutive possessions.

The Jayhawks went on to their 43rd victory over their state rivals in the last 46 meetings of the 272-game series.

Travis Releford had 16 points and Tyshawn Taylor had 13 as Kansas launched its campaign for an eighth straight Big 12 championship with its 21st straight conference-opening victory.

McGruder had 15 points and Samuels had 12 for Kansas State, which was only 5 for 20 from 3-point range.

The Jayhawks dominated the boards 50-26.

Kansas called time out after the Wildcats closed to 39-36 and 3-point specialist Teahan immediately connected from beyond the arc to make it 42-36, prompting a timeout by Kansas State coach Frank Martin. After McGruder’s basket, Teahen connected for a second 3-pointer.

Martavious Irving went to the line with a chance to slice the lead to five points but missed two free throws. Seven-footer Jeff Withey rebounded for the Jayhawks and slammed home a dunk on the other end.

After Will Spradling’s 3-pointer cut the lead to 47-41, Releford’s 3-pointer and Robinson’s dunk off a pass from Teahan triggered a window-rattling roar from the crowd and put the Jayhawks on top 52-41 with 7:53 to go.

Following a timeout, Robinson dunked again and then soared to the basket for a dunk off Taylor’s missed jumper.

Taylor’s uncontested layup capped the run and gave the Jayhawks a 56-41 lead.

The Jayhawks, fueled by Robinson’s six points off a putback and two medium-range jumpers, went on an 18-4 run in the opening minutes and took a 23-5 lead.

By the time Irving finally scored at the 8:12 mark of the half, the Wildcats had hit only three of 17 shots while Kansas was 10 for 19 and held an 18-6 rebounding edge en route to a 35-20 halftime lead.Robinson, with 10 rebounds and nine points, fell barely short of posting a double-double at halftime in two straight games. His 10 double-doubles lead the Big 12.

The Wildcats’ only nonconference loss was a double-overtime setback to West Virginia on a neutral court.

The Wildcats came in second in the nation averaging 28.8 free throw but were only eight of 16 from the line on Wednesday.
