(Photo/FHSU Athletics)

Adrian Ramirez scored with less than three minutes left at 87:17, lifting Fort Hays State to a 3-2 victory over Upper Iowa on Sunday (Oct. 9) at Pattison Field in Fayette, Iowa. The Tigers won their third straight game and have a month long unbeaten streak at seven games.

Ramirez’s game winner came on a give-and-go as Ramirez received a pass from Diego Cabral and hit a strike from 6-yards away, scoring his second goal of the game.

The goal happened less than three minutes after Peacocks tied the game at 2-2 on a fast break goal at 84:40.

The Peacocks started the game scoring on a penalty kick at 34:18 by Derek Oelmann for a 1-0 lead, which was the only scoring of the first half.

FHSU knotted the game at 1-1 on a goal from 8 yards out by Tomas Mares, his third of the goal of the season. Cabral tallied his first of two assists on the Mares goal.

Less than seven minutes later, the Tigers took their first lead on Ramirez’s first goal. The junior midfielder scored on a free kick from 20 yards on the left side for the FHSU 2-1 advantage.

Ryan Pakieser went the whole 90 minutes in goal, making four saves while allowing the two goals. His record is 5-2-1 on the season.

The Tigers outshot the Peacocks 21-14 in the game, including an 11-6 first half advantage.

FHSU improved their record to 7-2-1, including three straight wins, all on the road, and a seven-game unbeaten streak.

The Tigers play their last road game of their four-game roadtrip on Friday (Oct. 14) at Nebraska-Omaha. The game is scheduled for 3 p.m.

FHSU Volleyball Can’t Hold Off Late Pitt State Rally

The Fort Hays State volleyball team hosted MIAA rival Pittsburg State on Sunday (Oct. 9) at Gross Memorial Coliseum. After rallying from behind on two separate occasions, the Tigers could not hold off a fifth-set run from the Gorillas which gave them the 3-2 victory.

The match was very balanced, and the second five-setter that the teams have played this season. Fort Hays State outhit Pitt State .183 to .143 and had 113 digs to the Gorillas 109, but they were done in by errors on the serve and on blocks. The Tigers committed 11 service errors to just two for Pitt State and also had five blocking errors.

Pittsburg State took the first set 25-22 before FHSU rebounded and took the second set by the same score. The teams traded the third and fourth sets as well, with Pitt taking the third 25-19 and FHSU getting the fourth 25-16. The Tigers then rode the momentum into the fifth set, taking an 11-4 advantage and they appeared on the way to their second MIAA win of the season.

Pitt State came roaring back following a timeout, and they used three attack errors by FHSU and two kills of their own to cut the lead to 12-10, causing Fort Hays State to call a timeout. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the momentum had already swung and they were unable to get it stopped, with Pitt quickly tying the set up at 12-12 after two more Tiger attack errors. Sara Hewson got a kill to put the Tigers up 13-12, but Pitt got back-to-back kills from Morgan Voorhes to take their first lead of the set at 14-13. A kill from Jenna Ulrich helped the Tigers stay alive, but the Gorillas scored the next two points and won the set 16-14 and the match 3-2.

Four Tigers put down double figure kills, led by Kylee Hoagland with 18 and Hewson with 17. Ulrich was close behind with 14 and Madison Schwartz who had 11. Tracie Hileman the Tigers with 33 digs while Makenzie Weinman added 28. Kayla Zoglman had 61 assists to lead the Tigers and Ulrich had a team-high eight blocks (one solo, seven assist).

Voorhes led the Gorillas with 13 kills and Christa McCaw had a team-high 33 digs.

Fort Hays State drops to 12-9 on the year and 1-6 in the MIAA. They will play at home again on Friday (Oct. 14) against Missouri Western in a match starting at 7:00 pm.

Tebow Led Rally Falls Short In Broncos Loss To San Diego

denverbroncos.com

DENVER, Co.- Phillip Rivers threw for 250 yards and a touchdown as the San Diego Chargers narrowly escaped with a 29-24 win over the Tim Tebow-led Denver Broncos.

Ryan Mathews rushed for a career-high 125 yards on 24 carries and Nick Novak hit five field goals for the Chargers *4-1)

Tebow spelled a struggling Kyle Orton to start the second half and nearly completed a thrilling comeback, but his pass from the San Diego 29-yard line fell incomplete in the endzone as time expired.

In all, Tebow threw for 79 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 38 yards and a score.

Willis McGahee ran for 125 yards and Knowshon Moreno had a 28-yard touchdown reception for the Broncos (1-4).

Orton completed 6-of-13 passes for 34 yards and an interception. Tebow initially found the doing difficult as well, as the Broncos were held scoreless in the third quarter.

Novak’s career-long 51-yard field goal gave the Chargers a 26-10 lead early in the fourth, but Tebow sparked Denver behind his legs and trademark enthusiasm.

Following a San Diego touchdown, the Broncos scored a quick touchdown, as McGahee’s 28-yard scamper preceded the three consecutive Tebow runs, the last of which resulted in a 12-yard score. McGahee converted the two-point conversion to make it a 26-18 game.

After a Rivers fumble, Tebow found Moreno and a screen three plays into the Broncos’ ensuing drive for a 28-yard touchdown. But Antione Cason knocked away Tebow’s pass on the two-point conversion attempt, effectively maintaining San Diego’s 26-24 advantage.

Rivers did his best to keep the ball out of Tebow’s hands, drving his team 60 yards down the field before Novak hit a 35-yarder for a 29-24 advantage. Early in the drive, Rivers found Malcolm Floyd for a 38-yard gain on 3rd-and-10.

Tebow was left with just 24 seconds to operate, but continued to scrap. He completed a 20-yard pass to a leaping Brandon Floyd, then hit Daniel Fells for 31-yards before spiking the ball with one second remaining. He bought time on the final play, scrambling madly in the backfield before firing a bullet into the crowded endzone. It turned out to be a blank, but it appears the quarterback controversy in Denver has been reloaded.

K-State Moves Up In Both Polls

Following its 24-17 win over Missouri on Saturday, Kansas State moved up several spots in both national polls on Sunday as the Wildcats checked in at No. 17 in this week’s AP poll and No. 18 in the USA Today Coaches poll.

The Wildcats begin a two-game road swing this Saturday when they visit Texas Tech (4-1, 1-1) for a 6 p.m. nationally-televised conference matchup on Fox Sports Net.

Following a road trip to Kansas the following week, K-State returns home October 29 to face top-ranked Oklahoma for homecoming. Tickets remain available and can be purchased online at www.k-statesports.com, by calling 1-800-221-CATS and at the Athletics Ticket Office in Bramlage Coliseum.

FHSU Battles But Falls Short Against No. 8 Pittsburg State

The Pittsburg State Gorillas score 21 unanswered third quarter points and knock off the Fort Hays State Tigers 38-17 in front of 4,704 on a rainy Saturday homecoming night at Lewis Field.

Pitt answered with a 12-play 64-yard, 6:27 scoring drive to go up 14-7 early in the second quarter. Each team exchanged field goals to make it 17-10 Pitt at the half. The Gorillas had a chance to go up more but WR Andrew Castaneda had the ball knocked away near the goal line by Sherod Murdock for a touchdack.

Anthony Sheppard, making his first start of the season at quarterback, capped a 10-play, 67-yard with a 7-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 17 with 10:10 to play in the third quarter.

Pitt scored on their next drive then took advantage of two Tigers turnovers for the final margin late in the third.

FHSU Men’s Soccer Routs Truman

(Photo/FHSU Athletics)

The Fort Hays State men’s soccer team dominated Truman, 4-0, on Friday on the road in Kirksville, Mo. The Tigers got two goals each from Ricardo Yeverino and Tomas Mares in the win.

Mares notched the first two FHSU goals, scoring his first unassisted in the 10th minute on a shot from the left side from five yards out. Mares added his second of the game, and second of the year, 15 minutes later, scoring from 15 yards away on a pass from Diego Cabrel. The Tigers finished the first half up 2-0.

Yeverino provided the second half scoring for the Tigers, notching his two goals 13 minutes apart in the 47th and 60th minutes. The junior striker scored first on a shot from the left side from 30 yards away. Cabral added his second assist in the game on the goal. Yeverino scored again off a turnover, going one-on-one against a Bulldog defender and beating the goalkeeper from 20 yards. The two goals give Yeverino 10 on the season, a team high.

Ryan Pakieser notched the win in goal, stopping two Bulldog shots in the shutout. The shutout is Pakieser’s second on the season.

The win upped FHSU’s record to 6-2-1 on the season, and the Tigers travel to Upper Iowa on Sunday for a 3 p.m. kickoff in Fayette, Iowa.

Y102 Game of the Week: Trego at Hoxie (Listen Live)

The Country Bull Y102 Area Game of the Week features an 8-Man I District #7 between the Hoxie Indians and the Trego Community Golden Eagles in Hoxie. The Golden Eagles are 1-4 after picking up their first win of the season last week at Stockton. For the second straight year the Trego has played the toughest schedule in 8-Man I, their first four opponents combined records are 17-2.

The Eagles offense is averaging about 27 points per game, after averaging 23 points per game last season. The Golden Eagle offense is led by three underclassmen in the backfield and three seniors up front. Running back Cameron Staples was the leading rusher a year ago for the Eagle, with 1006 yards, and he leads Trego through the first five games with 651 yards and 9 touchdowns. Fullback Devon Ghumm has 212 yards rushing and quarterback John Griffith is back under center again this year. Staples along with Senior Blake Fritts anchor the defense for the Golden Eagles again this year.

The Hoxie Indians made a big splash in 8 Man-I a year ago finishing 6-3 in their first season of 8 man football. The Indians return six starters on both sides of the ball from last year’s team. Senior quarterback Colton Spressor was banged up in their week three loss to Osborne, but he should see some time tonight. Sophomore Chase Kennedy has filled in nicely for Spressor. Running back Dalton Snyder has accounted for 418 yards and 5TD’s. Hoxie’s leading receiver from last season, Jaxsen Moss, started out the season strong again with 13 receptions and 2 touchdowns. Moss, Steven Yergey and P.J. Carter anchor the much improved Indians defense.

Tonight’s Y102 Area Game of the Week begins at 6:30 with the Fort Hays State University Office of Admissions Pre-game show on the Country Bull Y102.
