FHSU Men’s Golf Finishes 6th at Pittsburg State Invite

The Fort Hays State men’s golf team made a charge on Tuesday (Sept. 13) at the Pittsburg State Invitational in Pittsburg, Kan., at the Crestwood Country Club. Following a 310 on the first day, the Tigers shot 19 strokes better (291) in the final round to move up to sixth in the standings. The 291 tied for the second-lowest team score on Tuesday.

Unfortunately the Tigers were too many strokes back after the first day to vault any other teams than Missouri Western and Southwest Baptist. SBU was in sixth after the first day, while the Tigers were tied with MWSU. FHSU nearly caught Pittsburg State for fifth, which shot 304 on the second day.

Central Missouri won the event with a two-round total of 581 after scores of 290 and 291. First day leader Washburn fell to second, backing up a 288 with a 297 on day two. Lindenwood tied Washburn for second place shooting the lowest team score on Tuesday with 288 after a first day 297.

Hays freshman Trey Herman carded a 2-under par 70 on the second day to lead the Tigers. He tied for eighth overall with a total of 147. He shot seven strokes better on Tuesday.

Markus Hilger remained consistent, shooting one stroke better on the second day with a 74. His 149 total tied for 12th. Tom O’Keeffe shot three strokes better on Tuesday with a 74 and tied for 20th with a 151 total. Kevin Quinley, the lone NCAA regional qualifier for FHSU last year, erased an off day on Monday by shooting nine strokes better on Tuesday with a 73. His total of 155 tied for 36th.

Broncos Fall Short In Season Opener

By Gray Caldwell
denverbroncos.com

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Down by three early in the fourth quarter of the season opener, the Broncos looked poised to tie or even take the lead from the Oakland Raiders after trailing the majority of the game.

But on first-and-10 at the Oakland 24-yard line, with rain coming down, the ball slipped out of Kyle Orton’s hands and the Raiders recovered the fumble. Three plays later, Raiders quarterback Jason Campbell was in the end zone to push Oakland’s lead back to 10 in an eventual 23-20 win at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

“I don’t know (what happened) to be honest with you, it’s never really happened before,” Orton said of his fumble. “It’s just one of those deals that’s sickening to have happen to you.”

Orton — who finished the game with 304 passing yards, a touchdown and an interception — bounced back to find running back Lance Ball for a 9-yard touchdown, pulling the Broncos back to within a field goal with just under four minutes to go. But the Raiders picked up three first downs to close out the victory on Monday Night Football.

“All-in-all we came up three points short,” Head Coach John Fox said. “We will look at it on tape and try to evaluate it, digest it and try to improve on it next week against Cincinnati.”

The Broncos started Monday’s game quickly enough, taking an early 3-0 lead on a 28-yard Matt Prater field goal, but the Raiders answered with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Campbell to Marcel Reece early in the second quarter.

Oakland never surrendered the lead, going up 16-3 at halftime thanks to a 63-yard Sebastian Janikowski field goal that tied an NFL record also held by former Broncos kicker Jason Elam.

Eric Decker put the Broncos back on the board after halftime with a 90-yard punt return, and Prater tacked on another field goal to pull the team within three towards the end of the third quarter — but the run ended when the ball slipped out of Orton’s hands.

“We still battled back to 23-20,” Fox said. “We came close with Eric Decker’s return, and battled back there at the end. We just came up a little short.”

In the end, the Raiders held the Broncos to 38 rushing yards, sacking Orton four times and forcing three turnovers with an at-times dominating defensive performance.

“We couldn’t move the ball,” said Decker, who was the team’s second-leading receiver with 53 yards. “We were really playing from behind. You can look at one play, two plays but really the structure of the game, we made too many mistakes to give ourselves a chance to win.”

While the Broncos struggled to get a running game going, the Raiders racked up 190 yards on the ground led by Darren McFadden.

The fourth-year back continued his recent stretch of success against Denver, amassing 150 rushing yards.

“The Raiders are a great team,” said Von Miller, who forced a fumble on the first defensive snap of the game. “I’m not going to take anything away from them. They have a great backfield, but I felt like we had opportunities to take advantage of and we didn’t take advantage of them. All we can do is just come back to work, correct our mistakes and move forward.”

Some of those mistakes included 10 penalties for 91 yards — but the Raiders’ 15 for 131 helped offset them Monday. It tied for the fourth-most penalties committed by a Broncos opponent, and the 131 yards were the ninth-most ever by a Broncos opponent — the highest total since the Chiefs’ 137 in 1998.

Fox said the team will address the mistakes this week and look to build on the bright spots from a tough loss.

“We still have optimism,” the head coach said. “This was a game against a team that swept our division a year ago. It’s a team that whacked us twice a year ago. There’s no consolation for ‘close,’ but I think we’re still optimistic. We are just at 0-1 like half the teams in our football league.”

FHSU Men’s Golf Tied For 7th At PSU

The Fort Hays State men’s golf team is tied for seventh after the first day of the Pittsburg State Invitational. The Tigers shot a 310 and are 22 strokes behind first-place Washburn.
Markus Hilger leads the Tigers is tied for 15th after shooting a 3-over-par 75.

HHS Girls Golf 3rd At Garden City

The Garden City girls’ golf team has shot some incredibly low rounds this season so it’s only fitting they would do well at their own tournament. The Buffs shoot a 336 for the 18-hole event and wins by 13 shots over Maize. Hays High finishes third with a 353.

The Indians place six in the top-15 led by Kaycee Beilman who fired an 14-over-par 86 to finish seventh. Holly Hattan was ninth with an 87. Natalie Bethel came in 11th after an 89, Maddie Curry fired a 90 and was 13th followed by Taylor Herman’s 94 for 14th and Courtney Hess’ 95 for 15th.

J.B. Clark, QB, Truman
Clark had touchdown passes of 18, 4 and 27 yards with 298 yards passing in the Bulldogs’ 36-31 victory overFort Hays State. His one-yard touchdown plunge on a QB sneak with 9:28 remaining in the game, proved to be the winning score. The senior from Jupiter,Fla., went 28-of-48, the most completions, attempts and yards for a Bulldog signal caller since Matt Ticich threw for 405 in 2008 (32 games). Clark was 7-of-13 passing in third-down situations and used 10 different receivers on the day. He also added four rushes for 16 yards and was not sacked. The win broke a four-game losing streak dating back to last season.

Others Nominated: Andre Smith, FHSU; Michael Hill, MWSU; Jordan Simmons, NWMSU; Solomon Watkins, PSU; Justin Cooper, WU.

MIAA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
David Bass, DE, Missouri Western
Bass and the rest of the Griffon defensive line had an outstanding contest. The junior from St. Louis, Mo., finished the game tying a single game MWSU record for sacks in a game with four. The previous record was set back in 1999 against Washburn by Josh Charles. Bass sacked the UCM quarterback on back-to-back plays early in the third quarter. The Griffons had seven sacks and nine tackles for a loss in the contest. Bass also had one quarterback hurry to go along with one pass break-up. Bass tipped three other pass which were all intercepted with two being in Griffon territory. The 20 yards rushing was the least a Griffon team has giving up since September 12, 2009 when they held the Fort Hays State Tigers to 10 yards on 19 attempts. Bass finished with seven total tackles, with five being solo.

Others Nominated: Alex Whitehill, FHSU; Bryce Enyard, NWMSU; Nate Dreiling, LB, PSU.

Mundwiller led Truman with 152 all-purpose yards with career highs in catches (5), receiving yards (58), single-game punt returns (5), punt yardage (94) and longest punt return (58 yards) on Saturday. The 58-yard punt return, which was the longest by a Bulldog since 2007 (Albert Coker – 60 yards), set up the Bulldogs at the Tigers 19-yard line and eventually led to a 20-yard field goal to put Truman up 23-21. Mundwiller’s return yardage on Saturday of 94 yards, was five yards shy of the entire team’s punt return yardage from 2010. Offensively, the senior fromWashington,Mo., was Clark’s top target, being thrown to 14 times. Mundwiller added a special teams tackle on a fake punt by the Tigers.
