Smith Duo Leads FHSU Running Game

Look for another steady dose of the Smith’s Saturday when the Fort Hays State Tiger football team takes on Truman State in Kirksville, Missouri.

Edward Smith rushed for 97 yards and touchdown while his backfield mate Andre Smith added 92 yards in the Tigers 27-17 win over Emporia State.

Edward, now a sophomore, had nine more carries and four less yards than than he did all of last season. He says he and Andre Smith try to out do each other.

“It’s a competition in practice everyday” Edward Smith said. “When it’s game time it’s game time, no matter who gets the carries, whoever gets the touchdowns gets the touchdowns” Smith added.

 The Tigers and Bulldogs kickoff at one o’clock with the Fort Hays Auto Sales Pre-game Show at noon on Tiger Radio Mix-103.

Hays High Boys Soccer Advanced To McPherson Tourney Finals

The Hays High boys soccer team will play for their third straight McPherson Invitational title Saturday after a 3-2 victory over the host Bullpups in the semifinals Thursday.

The Indians trailed 2-1 at the half but score two second half goals including the game winner from Ethan Fort with just under 26 minutes to play. Jordan Windholz tied the match at two with a goal at 31:40 of the second half. Kellen Griffin scored early in the first half to give Hays a 1-0 lead.

The 2-2 Indians will face Maize South in the title match Saturday at 2pm. Maize South edged Augusta 2-1.

TMP-Marian Soccer Falls In Consolation Semifinals

The TMP-Marian boys soccer lost their consolation semifinal match with Salina South 3-1.

South led 1-0 at the half. Michael Gonzalez scored the Monarchs lone goal with just under 17 minutes to play.

The Cougars outshot TMP 14-3.

The Monarchs play Wichita Independent in the seventh place match at 8am Saturday.

Hays High Girls Golfers 2nd In Dodge City

The Hays High girls golfers finish second in Dodge City. The Indians shoot a 177, eleven shots behind Garden City.

The Indians place three in the top-ten led by Natalie Bethel who finished fourth with a 42. Holly Hattan was fifth one-stroke back. Maddie Curry fired a 45 and came in seventh. Mackenzie Thayer of Garden City wins again with a 36.

Hays High Volleyball 3-0 In Dodge City

The Hays High volleyball team wins all three of their matches in Dodge City. The Indians sweep Sublette (-12, -12), Dodge City (-9, -11) and Lakin (-15, -11) to move to 8-1 on the season. Katelyn Schumacher had 18 kills on the day including nine in the opening match against Sublette.

Hays High Boys Cross Country Wins Hutch Invite

The Hays High boys cross country team wins their second straight meet, taking the Hutchinson Invitational by 11 points over Goddard. All of the Indians varsity runners medaled led by junior Derek Drees who finished 5th with a time of 18:10. Dallas Kaiser was 7th (18:32), Joshua Brungardt 8th (18:38), Jake Nelson 12th (18:53), Landon Munsch 15th (19:20) and Austin Chambers 16th (19:37).

The Indian girls finished third out of three teams, placing five in the top-15. April Johnson led the way with a 5th place finish and a time of 17:08.

FHSU Women’s Golf Wins UNK Invite

The Fort Hays State women’s golf team wins the Nebraska-Kearney Invitational 16 shots ahead Regis. The Tigers shoot a 318 in the final round Wednesday to finish with two-day 649 total.

Jordan Nixon closed with a final-round two-over 74 to finish first with a two-day 159 totel, one shot ahead of teammate Kiley Johansen who shot a 79 Wednesday. Sami Hobson was sixth with a 164 and Samantha Nielsen seventh with a 166.

Moscoso Takes No-Hit Bid Into 8th, A’s beat Royals

OAKLAND,Calif. (AP) – Guillermo Moscoso heldKansas City hitless until rookie Salvador Perez singled with two outs in the eighth inning, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Royals 7-0 Wednesday.

Moscoso (8-8) wound up allowing two hits in 8 2-3 innings. He walked one and struck out four and set an Oakland record by retiring 30 consecutive hitters – the final 13 againstSeattlelast Friday and the first 17 against the Royals. He walked Kansas City’s Alcides Escobar with two outs in the sixth.

Perez broke up the no-hit bid by lining a clean, opposite-field field single to right.

The Royals open a four-game series inSeattle tonight with Royals pre-game at 8:35pm on KAYS (1400-AM).

FHSU Volleyball Sweeps Panhandle State

The Fort Hays State volleyball team begins their season 4-1 after a 3-0 sweep over Oklahoma-Panhandle State in their home opener Tuesday night at Gross Coliseum.

The Tigers win by scores of 25-18, 25-13, 25-20 for their first home win since October 21, 2009.

FHSU hit .340 for the match with 42 kills and just 10 errors and was led by sophomore Camille Hubert who had 12 kills and just one error for a .524 hitting percentage. Hubert leads the Tigers with 48 kills through the first five matches.

Junior Kayla Zoglman, playing in her first match of the season, had 30 assists while the Tigers lone senior, Tracie Hileman led the way with 13 digs.

HHS Soccer Wins, TMP Loses At McPherson Tournament

The Hays High boys soccer team scored two second half goals and defeats Salina South 3-0 in the first round of the McPherson Invitational Tuesday.

Tanner Staab scored at 7:32 in the first half. Shawn Herman and Kellen Griffin scored the Indians second half goals. The Indians will now play the host Bullpups in the six o’clock semifinals Thursday.

McPherson scored a tie-breaking goal in the 38th minute of the second half to defeat TMP-Marian 2-1. Michael Gonzalez gave the Monarchs the lead a minute and-a-half into the game on a header. TMP will now play Salina South at two o’clock Thursday.

HHS Tennis Finished 3rd In Great Bend

The Hays High girls tennis team finished third at the Great Bend Round Robin. The Indians were led by Jill Taylor who went 3-1 to win No. 2 singles. The No. 2 doubles team of Megan Bird and Janae Gaqnon also went 3-0 to finish first. Emily wise was third in No. 1 singles going 2-1 as was the No. 1 doubles team of Bonnie McRae and Hanna Pfannenstiel.

Hays High Volleyball Goes 2-1 In Goodland

The Hays High volleyball team goes 2-1 at the Goodland Quadrangular Tuesday. The Indians lost their opener to Burlington, Colorado 2-0 (9-25, 20-25) then came back to defeat Goodland in three (20-25, 25-17, 25-21) and TMP-Marian in two (25-20, 25-21). The Indians are now 5-1 on the season.
