The Tigers fell to UC-Colorado, 1-0, on Sunday (Sept. 4) at the FHSU Soccer Stadium in Hays. The loss is the first in the history of the program, dropping the Tigers to 1-1 on the season.

The Tigers had their opportunities in the game. Early in the seventh minute, Tomas Mares’ shot went just outside the right goalpost. Ricardo Yeverino had a few opportunities of his own for the Tigers, but the Mountain Lions’ goalkeeper, Brandon Costa, made some huge saves.

FHSU was out-shot by UC-Colorado Springs, 16-10, including a7-2MountainLion advantage in the second period.

Pakieser played all 90 minutes in goal for the Tigers, recording eight saves. The loss drops Pakieser’s record to 1-1.

The Blow-Out

It wasn’t the first time I had heard such a score nor will be the last.  72-0, 69-3, 68-6.  Yes football scores that got out of hand.  Too many times the response is:

“Wow coach could you pile on little more?!”  Here are the people that usually believe the coach on the winning team just kept piling on.  He knew he had the better team and he wanted to prove it.

I am here to tell you that is not the case.  Wait stop, there could be a few coaches across the entire state that would do that, I can’t tell you who but  there could be a couple.

I have spent time around some really amazing programs including McCook, NE.  The Bison coach Jeff Gross is a Hays native and has built an absolute powerhouse in southwest Nebraska.  During a Saturday morning coaches show I was chatting with coach Gross about a particular score that looked bad.  Like 69-0 bad.  Ya it was one of those scores.  My question to coach Gross was point blank, “what do you do in those situations?”  McCook has enough football players they do not (or at least not at the time) took freshmen on the road as this game was.

Coach Gross pulled his starters at half time, playing exclusively sophomores with a couple of juniors to plug holes.  Coach Gross also ran dives up the middle for the rest of the night, hoping that the opposing team would take his kids down after just a few yards, eating up clock and keeping the score down.  The only problem is that the other team couldn’t make the tackles.  So the burden came back onto coach Gross.  How can he or any other coach for that matter tell his kids to “lie down?”  How can you tell kids that are chomping at the bit just to prove themselves and play under the Friday night lights to “take it easy?”

To simply put it…you can’t.  You can’t tell kids to fall back what may be their only shot.

I know coaches that have sent letters off to the team they just beat terribly on the previous Friday night explaining that they did try to stop the onslaught by certain play calling and pulling players out of the game.  I admire these coaches trying to explain to others in their profession that they did not want to or mean to embarrass them or their team.

So before you start chastising coaches for running up the score…take a minute to realize that the coach very well had done everything to control the score, but it simply got out of hand.

KFIX Home Of The Hays High Indians – (Listen Live)

The Hays High Indians football team opens their season in Chapman on Friday night.  The Indians were 7-2 last year and missed the playoffs on a points tie-breaker.  Hays High returns all but one on the offensive line this season and a backfield that all saw time including senior quarterback Austin Unrein who missed the last three and half games of the 2010 season due to a knee injury.  The question mark could be on defense where only a few starters return.

Chapman finished 0-9 last year and has a new head coach in Trevor Williams.  Williams is a three assistant at Chapman and has previous head coaching experience in Oberlin.  Chapman had a rash of injuries through out the year and actually return quite players that would have been starters a year ago.

(Listen Live) Y102 Area Game Of The Week – Palco vs. Stockton

Listen LIVE Listen LIVE Listen on Facebook

The Country Bull Y102 Area Game of the week begins the 2011 season in Stockton as the Tigers host the Palco Roosters. The Roosters finished 6-3 a year go under second year head coach Justin Pierce. Palco finished 4-2 in district seven, but missed out on the postseason. While the Roosters graduated a number of talented Seniors from last year’s team, they return two extremely talented starters. Senior quarterback Kody Hamel will lead the Roosters again the season, last season Hamel threw for 449 years and rushed for 481 yards and sixteen total touchdowns. Senior running back Anthony Keller rushed for 778 yards and 14 touchdowns as a Junior.

The Stockton Tigers also return a talented Senior running back in Connor Winters. Winters rushed for 992 yards last season and scored nine total touchdowns leading the Tigers to a 3-6 record under second year head coach Justin Basart. This season Stockton will need to find a new quarterback to lead the way after Chance Miller graduated. The Tigers will turn to Junior Koby Beougher to lead the offense that scored 14 points per game last season.

In the season opener in Palco a year ago Stockton’s Tyler Peterson kicked the eventual game winning field goal in the fourth quarter giving Stockton the 9-8 win. The game featured five turnovers. Stockton was able to overcome four fumbles to earn the win. This season both teams will need underclassmen to step up and fill some big holes left by graduating Seniors.

Kickoff from Stockton tonight is set for 7 o’clock will be on the air at 6:30 with the Fort Hays State University pre-game show on the Country Bull Y102.

FHSU Wins Season Opener

The Fort Hays State Tigers scored 20 unanswered points after falling behind 17-7 in the third quarter as they rally for a 27-17 win over Emporia State in their season opener in front of over 47-hundred last night at Lewis Field.

Despite giving up over 500 yards in the game, the Tiger defense came up big, forcing three turnovers and blocking a field goal on the Hornets last four possessions of the game.

Quarterback Blake McAhren struggled early but settled down to complete 19-of-30 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns. Edward Smith rushed for 97 yards on 24 carries and a score while Andre Smith added 92 yards.

Anthony Smith got the Tigers on board early in the second quarter with a 13 yard touchdown catch. Keaton Callins pulled the Tigers within a field goal with a little over five minutes to play in the third with a 26 yard TD catch.

Tyler Kimbrough tied the game early in the fourth quarter with a 20 yard field goal following a Hornet fumble. He hit a 49-yarder with 6:28 to play to give the Tigers the lead for good.

A Korey Allison interception and 55 yard return set up the games final score, a three-yard plunge from from Edward Smith with 1:38 to play.
