The Fort Hays State Tiger football team held an intersquad scrimmage Friday afternoon at Lewis Field. Sophomore running back Edward Smith scored two touchdowns, one on a 45-yard run and another from one-yard out.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –Kansas football head coach Turner Gill named sophomore Jordan Webb as the starting quarterback here Friday afternoon. Webb, who was in a battle for the top spot with senior Quinn Mecham, was the Jayhawks’ starting signal caller in seven games as a redshirt freshman.
“After evaluating our quarterback position with (Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach) Chuck (Long), we decided at this time to announce that Jordan Webb will be our starter at that position,” said Gill, who is entering his second season at the helm of the KU program. “Jordanhas shown great leadership and consistency all throughout Fall Camp. His improved quarterbacking skills put him in the position to lead our team.”
Webb earned his first career start in the second game of the 2010 season and led the Jayhawks to a win over No. 15 Georgia Tech as he was 18-of-29 for179 yardsand three TDs. He went on to start the next five games on the season before being injured in the Texas A&M game and missing three contests. Webb came off the bench againstOklahomaStateand then returned to the starting lineup in the season finale againstMissouri.
TheUnion,Mo., native, was 121-of-214 for1,195 yardsand seven TDs on the season. His 1,195 passing yards were the second most by a freshman in KU history. Webb’s best passing game of the season came in a win overNew MexicoStateas he threw for249 yards. He also threw for over200 yardsas he had228 yardspassing versusKansasState.
Additionally, Gill announced thatLongview,Texas, native Brandon Olson has joined theKansasfootball program. Olson, a 6-foot-4 tight end, arrives at KU fromLongviewHigh Schoolwhere he helped lead the Lobos to an appearance in the 2010 Texas Class 5A State semifinals and the finals in both 2008 and 2009. He will count as a member of the 2011 recruiting class.

Dustin Pedroia continued his impressive hitting at Kauffman Stadium, driving in three including the go-ahead run single in the fifth as the Boston Red Sox edge the Royals 4-3 in the first of their four-game series.
Pedroia is 24-for-48 with 12 RBI’s in his career in Kansas City after going 3-for-4 Thursday night, helping Boston remain a half-game behind the Yankees in the AL East.
Josh Beckett allowed all three runs over the first three innings for the win, allowing seven hits over seven innings to snap a four-game winless stretch and move to 7-1 lifetime against the Royals.
Alex Gordon homered for the second straight game. His two-run shot in the third tied the game at three. He also doubled.
Luke Hochevar (8-10) fanned six, but was tagged with eight hits and four runs over six innings as the Royals lose for the ninth time in 11 games.

Fort Hays State softball coach Erin Kinberger announced her first recruiting class for the Lady Tigers on Thursday (Aug. 18). Kinberger has added seven players to the roster for the 2012 season, including four true freshman and three junior college transfers. Those joining the Fort Hays State program this year are Breanna Beckerman, Abby Morrison, Madison Putman, Chelsey Rottinghaus, Kaitlyn Shattleroe, Yasnaya Susoeff and Amanda Vaupel.

There will be a lot of changes this season for the Fort Hays State football team, and for one Tiger, it includes wearing a black jersey at practice rather than white.
Liberal senior Ricky Jacques is making the move from running back to linebacker. Jacques rushed for 161 yards on 42 carries in a backup role behind James Walker a year ago. He made the switch Tuesday after starting the season at his customary tailback spot.
Jacques says it’s the first time he’s been on the defensive side of the ball since high school.

Royals outfielder Jeff Francoeur signs a 2-year contract extension with the Royals.
KANSAS CITY, MO (August 18, 2011) – The Kansas City Royals announced today that the club has signed outfielder Jeff Francoeur to a two-year contract extension through 2013. Consistent with club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
The 27-year-old Francoeur is hitting .277 this season for the Royals, his first with the club. He has recorded 35 doubles, fifth-most in baseball, with three triples, 15 home runs, 66 RBI, 60 runs and a career-high 19 stolen bases. In addition, the 2007 Rawlings Gold Glove winner is third in the Majors with 12 outfield assists and leads all of baseball with 93 assists since the 2005 season.
Francoeur initially signed a one-year contract with the Royals on December 15, 2010. He and his wife, Catie, reside in Duluth, Ga.
Alex Gordon's three-run homer helped the Kansas City Royals to a 5-4 win over the Yankees Wednesday.
The Kansas City Royals used a three-run homer from Alex Gordon and a controversial solo shot from Billy Butler to edge the New York Yankees 5-4 to salvage the final game of their three-game series at Kauffman Stadium.
Both home runs came in the Royals four-run fourth.
Replays showed Butler’s ball hitting off the top of the padded green wall and bounce back into the field. After review, the umpires ruled it a home run.
Joakim Soria labored through a 40-pitch ninth inning, loading the bases and giving up a run before striking out Jorge Posada on his 40th birthday.
The win breaks a four-game losing streak and is just the Royals second in ten games.
Mike Moustakas doubled and had three hits.

KANSAS CITY,Mo. (AP) – Bubba Starling says it’s great to be a Kansas City Royal and be relieved of the pressure of deciding between football and baseball.
The three-sport high school star from Edgerton,Kan., appeared at his first news conference in Kauffman Stadium on Wednesday, about 42 hours after agreeing to give up a football scholarship at Nebraska. In return, he was given a $7.5 million bonus by the Royals, who drafted him No. 5 overall in June.
The power-hitting outfielder said being from the Kansas City area and growing up a Royals fan made his decision at least a bit easier. He said he can’t wait to get to the Royals’ instructors in Arizona and start working on his game.
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – The AFC West champion Kansas City Chiefs had a crash course in the NFL during their three weeks of training camp.
Besides the basics, the team also learned things like how to come out of the tunnel for pregame warm-ups, how to find the plane for charter flights, how to dress in public settings and how to act in the team hotel.
The Chiefs are preparing for Friday night’s preseason game at Baltimore, the team that handily bounced them out of the playoffs last season. Coach Todd Haley says he is content with the work they’ve done at camp so far.
MANHATTAN,Kan. (AP) -KansasState says it’s been assured the NCAA has no concerns about two Wildcats football players identified by a jailed University of Miami booster as recipients of improper gifts.
Miami resident Nevin Shapiro has told Yahoo! Sports he paid for lunch and hotel rooms for brothers Arthur and Bryce Brown, their parents and a friend when they visited Miami in March 2008. The Browns are from Wichita.
In a brief statement Wednesday night, Kansas State said it’s been informed by NCAA staff that the organization has no concerns about the Browns’ eligibility to compete for the Wildcats.
Arthur Brown is a junior linebacker, while Bryce is a sophomore running back. Both transferred to Kansas State from elsewhere and sat out last year because of NCAA transfer rules.
MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – An adviser for two Kansas State football players acknowledges a now-jailed University of Miami booster took the Wichita brothers out for lunch and paid for hotel rooms more than three years ago.
The Wichita Eagle quotes Brian Butler, who says Nevin Shapiro took Bryce and Arthur Brown, their family and Butler out for lunch in March 2008. At that time Arthur Brown already was at the University of Miami and Bryce Brown was a sophomore at East High School in Wichita.
Yahoo! Sports reported Tuesday that Shapiro says he provided improper gifts to 72 athletes. Shapiro is serving 20 years in prison.
Arthur Brown left Miami after two seasons and Bryce Brown left Tennessee after one. Both transferred to Kansas State and sat out last season per transfer rules.
The Fort Hays State Tiger football team continues their preseason workouts. Tuesday they had their first two-a-day workouts. Wednesday they’re back to a morning practice. One of the positions that has a handful of returners is the defensive line. The Tigers return four who have seen significant time in seniors Edwin Herbert, Ernesto Martinez and Cameron Shelton. Junior Aaron Burton also returns and Kyle Perry has been converted from linebacker to defensive end and is competing for playing time.
