KHAZ Music News: Strait Rides Away

Though careful to note that retirement is not imminent, George Strait today announced his 2013-2014 The Cowboy Rides Away tour, his last. At a press conference at Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame, Strait revealed he’ll embark on his final tour Jan. 18 in Lubbock, TX, with Martina McBride in support. The first 20 markets are already set. “This is going to be a very special, emotional tour for me,” he says. “Everywhere we’re going holds fond memories and I’m looking forward to paying my respects.” The 60-year-old Country Music Hall of Famer will continue to record and issue singles via MCA, and he will continue to perform at select dates.

KHAZ Music News: Loretta Lynn Celebrates 50 Years As A Grand Old Opry Member

(AP) – Loretta Lynn is celebrating 50 years as a Grand Ole Opry member. She had some help at the Opry House from Miranda Lambert and her Pistol Annies, Lynn’s sister Crystal Gayle, Lee Ann Womack and Trace Adkins along with a standing room only crowd. Lambert teared up remembering her first conversation with Lynn. The show marked the first performance on the Opry for the Pistol Annies.

KHAZ Music News: Willie Nelson To Publish New Memoir

(AP) – Willie Nelson is due out with a new memoir in November. He will release “Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I Die” on November 13th. Publisher William Morrow says Nelson will tell never-before-heard stories about his life, family, music, politics, Texas, religion and favorite recreational activity. A news release says the book will include contributions from family and friends and artwork by his son Micah. Nelson’s first autobiography was published in 1988.

KHAZ Music News: Jason Aldean To Play Dallas Show For Breast Cancer

(AP) – The last stop on Jason Aldean’s “My Kinda Party Tour” will be especially meaningful. He is donating the proceeds from the show in Dallas on October 27th to Susan G. Komen for the Cure to fight breast cancer. It’s Aldean’s seventh annual “Concert for the Cure.” The show is already sold out with over 20,000 tickets purchased in four minutes. Aldean says he wants to do his part to find a cure before his daughters grow up. The annual concert honors his close friend who died of the disease.

KHAZ Music News: Johnny Cash TV Series

(AP) – Get ready to learn more about Johnny Cash through a six-part TV mini-series. The network Ovation will air “Johnny Cash: Song by Song” starting October 7th with two back-to-back episodes. Each show will dig deep into the story behind classics such as “I Walk the Line,” “Ring of Fire,” and “A Boy Named Sue.” Artists participating in the series include Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, Shooter Jennings, Ben Folds, Chris Isaak, Billy Bob Thornton and Grace Potter.

Kimberly Schlapman says when she was a kid, she would pretend to be a cooking show host. Now, her childhood fantasy is about to come true. On Saturday, Schlapman premieres “Kimberly’s Simply Southern” cooking show on Great American Country. The 13-episode series takes advantage of Schlapman’s schedule touring with Little Big Town. She learns how to catch the perfect lobster while in Maine and make a perfect pie crust in Chicago. At home in Nashville, Schlapman shares the kitchen with family and friends including band mate Karen Fairchild.

KHAZ Music News: Scoty McCreery Named One Of Billboard’s Hottest Acts Under 21

(AP) – Scotty McCreery has a lot to celebrate these days. Last week he was inducted into the Guinness Book of Records as the youngest male to enter the U.S. albums charts at number-1 and now he’s been named as one of Billboard Magazine’s “Hottest Minors.” McCreery, who is 18, took the fourth spot on the “21 Under 21” list. Justin Bieber, One Direction and Demi Lovato took the top three and Miley Cyrus came in at 18.

KHAZ Music News: Academy Of Country Music To Honor Ricky Skaggs

(AP) – Next Monday, Ricky Skaggs joins country music legends including Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams and Dolly Parton as a recipient of the prestigious Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award. Skaggs, along with Emmylou Harris, Dwight Yoakam and producer Billy Sherrill will be honored in Nashville, by the Academy of Country Music, for their trailblazing work in Country music. The next day, Skaggs will release “Music To My Ears,” his first all-new Country and Bluegrass album in more than three years.

KHAZ Music News: Farm Aid

(AP) – Farm Aid is expected to draw 30,000 people to southeastern Pennsylvania tomorrow. Willie Nelson, president and co-founder of Farm Aid, says he believes the group’s commitment to protecting farmland puts it on “the right side of history.” Farm Aid has raised more than $40 million since the first concert in 1985. The organization helps farmers across the country keep their land by awarding modest cash grants to groups that help them. The lineup of the nine-hour concert at Hershey includes Nelson and fellow Farm Aid board members Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews. Others to perform are Jamey Johnson and Jack Johnson.

KHAZ Music News: Carrie Underwood And Brad Paisley Host CMA Awards Commercials

(AP) – Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley are doing their part to promote the CMA Awards which they will co-host for the fifth time. The awards show airs on November 1, but viewers can catch a glimpse of the two in a series of funny new commercials. Underwood and Paisley as restaurant hosts, Underwood and Paisley as children’s birthday party hosts and the duo as bingo night co-hosts. In the restaurant clip, Paisley wears a gigantic foam cowboy hat and plays a short jingle every time he asks customers how many people are in their party. Underwood wears a short sequined dress and a headset as she welcomes people to “Danny’s.” The point being? The two should stick to their day jobs as musicians and once a year take on duties as co-hosts of the CMA Awards.

KHAZ Music News: Lee Brice’s ‘Hard To Love’ Goes Gold

(AP) – Apparently Lee Brice’s latest single “Hard 2 Love” isn’t actually all that hard to love. The title track to his current album has been certified gold for selling more than 500,000 digital downloads. It’s the second single off of Brice’s sophomore album and follows his hit “A Woman Like You” which went platinum.
