Diocese marks Pope’s final Day

Today, the Pope becomes the first pontiff to retire in almost 600 years.

At 1 p.m. Central time today, the 85 year old Benedict’s retirement will become official and the papal seat will stand vacant.

Catholic Churches in Hays are not officially conducting any special services to mark Benedict’s final day in office. Father Daryl at St. Nicholas told Hays Post that he had nothing special planned. The office at St. Joseph Church told Hays Post, ” the Bishop had invited the Diocese to pray and had sent out a prayer.”  Hays Post did speak with the Bishop, the Most Rev. Edward J. Weisenburger. He told Hays Post,

“I am celebrating a mass on Friday at noon in Salina’s Cathedral to recognize the Pope’s departure and I do want to invite everyone to pray for the Holy Father in this time of transition.”Benedict XVI

KHAZ Country Music News: Jason Aldean Says It’s the “Duty” of Younger Stars to Support the Country Music Hall of Fame

khaz jason aldean 20121112Jason Aldean was one of several artists bringing country music to New York City Tuesday night, at an “All for the Hall” concert benefiting the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. And Jason says he thinks supporting the Hall of Fame is an important responsibility for every country artist on the charts today.

“I think it’s almost your duty as a country music artist to educate people on the background of country music and why we’re here,” Jason told ABC News Radio at the event at the Best Buy Theater in New York’s Times Square.  “The people that are enshrined in that building are the ones that kinda paved the way for us to be here, and get to do what we do right now.”

He added, “I think it’s important for us as artists that are out right now to make sure the people don’t forget that.”  Jason will also perform at a similar event in Nashville April 16, along with Eric Church, Tim McGraw, Brantley Gilbert and Willie Nelson, among others.

Asked to name the coolest piece of memorabilia he’s ever seen at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Jason laughed, “My outfit! That was the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. Are you kidding me? Something of mine in there? That was awesome!”

Also on the bill were Vince Gill, president of the Museum board, who created the All for the Hall fundraising campaign; plus Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, Ashley Monroe of Pistol Annies, Train lead singer Pat Monahan, and Allman Brothers Band legends Gregg Allman and Warren Haynes.

Vince told ABC News Radio that he was pleased to have put together an eclectic lineup for the night.  “Any time you get a chance to make new friends, that’s so healthy,” he said. “People that you may not know their music.  I’ve not met Pat [Monahan], and I love his voice and so I get a chance to hang out with him.”  Vince noted that Rodney and Emmylou are, of course, “lifelong friends,” while he’s known Ashley “since she was 15 years old.”  As for Jason, Vince called him, “the hottest thing going in country music.”

But Vince told ABC News Radio he was most excited about the prospect of jamming with the legendary Gregg Allman. “To get to hear Gregg Allman sing in person is the best of all,” he said “You know, I was that kid in my room listening to the Allman Brothers records and learning how to play guitar and trying to emulate what I was hearing as a kid, so it’s a big deal for me.”

City Addresses Snow on Residential Streets

snow on streetTo try to hasten the snow melt, City of Hays Public Works crews have been applying a salt brine to the residential streets. The forecast for slightly warmer weather and the brine mixture is expected to speed  the process.

Motorists are advised that this could create more ice potholes for the short term. Crews will then send blades through the areas to try to level out the rutting.

An attempt to reduce the refreeze in some intersections will be done by moving some of the piled snow. This should help drainage from the melt.

The city says these actions are being taken due to the large amount of snow and does not signal a change in policy regarding snow removal.

Huelskamp Named Defender of Economic Freedom

Tim Huelskamp flagFirst District Congressman Tim Huelskamp has again been named a Defender of Economic Freedom by fiscal watchdog group, Club for Growth. Huelskamp is one of only two members of the House of Representatives with a 100% score on Club for Growth’s Congressional Scorecard for 2012 and a 100% lifetime rating.

“I am honored to be named the top Congressional ‘Defender of Economic Freedom’ by the Club for Growth,” said Congressman Huelskamp. “Federal spending is out of control and President Obama is doing everything he can to expand federal control over our lives through regulation and tax increases. The people of the First District sent me to Washington to stop this over spending madness. My 100% lifetime fiscal conservative rating is a reflection of that.”
