Kansas Man going before Court Of Appeals on kidnap charges

Meeks
Meeks

Its been a year now since a 42-year-old Hutchinson man was sentenced to 20-months in prison for the criminal cases against him. Michael Meeks had entered no contest pleas in both cases as part of a plea agreement with the state after he was arrested  in January of 2011, after a brief standoff with police and arrested again in March of 2012 on multiple charges of stalking and violation of a protection order.

The cases are scheduled before that Kansas Court of Appeals on Wednesday as part of his appeal of the sentence handed down.

In the first case, he was charged with kidnapping, two counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon, criminal threat and battery. According to police, several 911 calls came in reporting a woman being forced into a home. A witness told police that he had picked her up, putting her over his shoulders and took her into the home, when she refused to enter on her own. Meeks was eventually taken into custody, but at one point reportedly had a shotgun pointed at officers which they later found hidden behind a couch.

They also found in a large safe in the basement, with 40-45 weapons inside, including an assault rifle and an alleged grenade launcher.

In the second case, he entered no contest pleas to criminal restraint instead of kidnapping along with two counts of aggravated assault of law enforcement officers. But, in the second case, he entered no contest pleas to felony flee and elude and violation of a protection from abuse order. All the charges of stalking were dropped by the state as part of the agreement.

Arguments before the appeals court Wednesday will be at 1:30 p-m in the afternoon.

Popular Hays Restaurant Closed

Montana Mike’s in Hays has closed.  The restaurant, whose billboard still shows that it was voted the Number 1 Steakhouse in Hays, closed its doors Tuesday, November 12th.  Cassandra Beard, a supervisor at the restaurant, told Hays Post that the restaurant and the owner of the property weren’t able to come to an agreement on the lease.

Beard said that most of the 33 employees found out Monday evening that Sunday had been their last day at the restaurant (Montana Mike’s is closed on Mondays).  She said that there will be an auction Wednesday November 13th at 10:00 am to sell various pieces from within the restaurant including salad bars, the décor, tray jacks, chairs, booths, and tables.  Beard added that the restaurant’s stock of food has already been shipped to another Mike’s location.

She speculated that the manager was looking at the possibility of opening at another location, but at this time the employees are being let go.

Calls to the local restaurant manager as well as the Vice-President Director of Operations at Montana Mike’s Steakhouse Corporate Office were not returned.

Kansas Couple sues after pot raid comes up empty

Police lights (AP) — A northeast Kansas couple has sued authorities after a SWAT-style raid of their home came up empty-handed for marijuana.

Adlynn and Robert Harte of Leawood filed suit in federal court Tuesday against the Johnson County board of commissioners, Sheriff Frank Denning and several deputies for the April 2012 raid.

The sheriff’s office referred questions to its attorney, who did not immediately return a call.

The lawsuit contends the raid was prompted by the Hartes’ purchase a few months earlier of hydroponic growing equipment for an indoor vegetable garden.

Authorities obtained a search warrant after misidentifying wet tea leaves found in their garbage.

The Hartes say in an emailed statement they hope the lawsuit prompts an examination of what they called reckless law enforcement practices.

State BOE reviews student assessment test results UPDATE

ks state board of education sign

4 p.m. (AP) — The Kansas Department of Education says overall scores by K-12 students on standardized math and reading tests have slipped this year.

The department also reported Tuesday that 59 percent of the state’s public and accredited private elementary and secondary schools failed to show progress this year in improving students’ overall scores. Students took the tests in the spring.

But Deputy Education Commissioner Brad Neuenswander (NOON’-swahn-duhr) said some of the declines can be attributed to changes in academic standards since 2010. He said the tests are not fully aligned to what’s being taught.

The department reported that 84.7 percent of Kansas students were proficient in reading, compared with 87 percent in 2012. It said 78.3 percent were proficient in math, compared to 85 percent in 2012.

5:10 a.m.  (AP) — Kansas education officials are releasing the results of student performance on assessment tests taken during the spring in math, reading, social studies and science.

The State Board of Education was scheduled to receive what’s known as the Kansas Report Card during a meeting Tuesday afternoon.

The report includes data on student participation rates and growth in the top three performance categories. Officials are also expected to discuss progress in closing achievement gaps among students of various ethnic and racial groups and income levels.

Ethanol Industry Fights Back Against Report Critical Of Environmental Impact

AP logoA new Associated Press investigation finds that the push to produce corn-based ethanol has fallen short of clean energy expectations and appears to be causing more environmental damage than promised.

The ethanol industry claims the AP relied on disproven myths, skewed data and outright fabrications.

The AP says its investigation is based on government data, interviews and observations. It highlights what many researchers have published in peer-reviewed journals and is consistent with reports by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The investigation finds that farmers rushing to plant more corn wiped out millions of acres of conservation land, destroyed habitat and polluted water supplies with fertilizer use. The consequences are so severe that environmentalists and many scientists have now rejected corn-based ethanol. The Obama administration stands by its policy.

Ethanol supporters are pushing back hard at the AP report. In a release on its Web site, the Renewable Fuels Association calls the story a “smear.”

“A new Associated Press (AP) story on the environmental impacts of corn ethanol uses disproven myths, skewed data, and outright fabrications to suggest biofuels and the Renewable Fuel Standard have not lived up to their promise.”

RFA croppedThe RFA says the lead AP reporter responsible for the story interviewed RFA staff on multiple occasions.

“RFA provided indisputable facts, peer-reviewed studies, and government data documenting ethanol’s positive impacts.”

“Yet, the AP consciously chose to ignore this material and instead opted to publish a salacious and terribly unbalanced account of the effects of corn production and ethanol on the environment.”

RFA offers its response to the article here.

Congress is working to do away with requirements that oil companies blend ethanol into their gasoline, something Big Oil is supporting.

Police seek mother who left 4 children home alone

police-lights.jpg(AP) — Four young Wichita children are in protective custody after a neighbor found a 4-year-old wandering down the street in the middle of the night.

The children had been alone in their home for more than 10 hours when the neighbor called police around 3:30 a.m. Saturday. No arrests have been made, and police were still looking for the children’s 24-year-old mother Tuesday.

Officers responding to the neighbor’s call went to the home in northeast Wichita and found three other children — a 6-month-old and two 1-year-olds.

Police said the mother left the home around 5 p.m. Friday. Investigators were uncertain where she went.

FHSU Class Promoting Local Museum

Chrysler Boyhood Home in Ellis
Chrysler Boyhood Home in Ellis

The Fort Hays State University Leadership 310 Class is promoting history and writing among area children.  A group from the FHSU class held a writing contest for 4th grade students in Washington and St. Mary’s grade schools in Ellis.  The goal of the contest was to increase exposure of the Walter P. Chrysler Boyhood Home and Museum located in Ellis.

Students were challenged to write an essay somehow relating to Chrysler, the museum or his home.  A ceremony was held for Washington students on November 6th where winners from their school were announced.  St. Mary’s will hold a ceremony for students Wednesday, November 13th at 4:30 beginning at the museum and ending at the school with pizza served to those in attendance.  Each participating student will earn a t-shirt, and medals will be awarded for the top three essays as chosen by the leadership class.

Zack McClure, one of the FHSU students holding this event, said that his class would like to make this an annual event to promote the museum.  He said the group has discovered that most people aren’t fully aware of the museum and all it offers.

“We had some sponsors for t-shirts, and a lot of the sponsors that we went to weren’t quite [aware].  I mean they knew it was there but it just sits in the background in Ellis. We wanted it to come out in the forefront.”

McClure added that over the course of the project, he’s been amazed at the information some of the students included in their essays, and at times it seemed like 4th graders were teaching college students something new with each entry.

The FHSU group created a Facebook page to promote the The Walter P. Chrysler Boyhood Home and Museum, which is located at 10th and Washington in Ellis, KS.
