Obama: Choice on Iran deal is between diplomacy and war

JULIE PACE, AP White House Correspondent

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says the choice on the Iran nuclear deal is between diplomacy and some form of war.

Obama is working to undermine critics of the nuclear deal. He says some of those opponents accept the choice of war.

Obama argued in support of the deal in a speech at American University in Washington on Wednesday.

Obama says if Iran fails to abide by the deal, it’s possible the U.S. would have no alternative to using military force against Iran. He says he hasn’t shied away from using force when necessary. Obama is pointing out that he’s ordered military action in seven countries and has sent thousands of American troops into battle.

But Obama says the U.S. can’t justify war in good conscience before testing a diplomatic agreement that could meet its objectives.

Obama said the nuclear deal with Iran builds on the tradition of strong diplomacy that won the Cold War without firing any shots.

Obama is comparing the agreement to President John F. Kennedy’s call for Cold War diplomacy and nuclear disarmament. He says not every conflict was averted, but the world avoided nuclear catastrophe.

The President is working to dissuade lawmakers in Congress from trying to stop the agreement.

Obama says many of the same people who argued for going to war in Iraq are now opposing the Iran deal. He says the looming congressional vote is part of the most consequential foreign policy debate since the Iraq war was authorized.

Kan. man hospitalized after Barton Co. collision

GREAT BEND – A Kansas man was injured in accident just before 11a.m. on Wednesday in Barton County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Chevy passenger vehicle driven by Tyler J. Fisher, 21, Hoisington, was stopped eastbound on N.E. 50th road at U.S. 281 four miles north of Great Bend.

The vehicle started to turn left in front of a 2008 Dodge passenger car driven by Shawn Marvin, 37, McPherson, that was southbound U.S. 281. The vehicles collided.

Marvin was transported to Great Bend Regional Hospital.

The KHP reported Fisher and a passenger Jessica E. Major, 30, Dorrance, were possibly injured but not where they were treated.

All were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

More police departments try ‘turn-in-your-competitor’ ploy to bust drug dealers

11782271_630038383765527_5144163112610242152_oCHARLTON, Mass. (AP) — Authorities in a Massachusetts town are reaching out to drug dealers who want to eliminate their competition.

The Charlton Police Department made a tongue-in-cheek post on their Facebook page Friday offering drug dealers the chance to provide information on their competitors.

It asks dealers to complete a fill-in-the-blank form that gives them the person’s name, address, phone number, what drugs they’re selling and where they are being sold.

Officer Richard McGrath says the post was meant to be entertaining, but says his officers would pursue any leads if a form was filled out.

McGrath told the Telegram & Gazette he found the form online and tailored it for Charlton police use.

The department so far has not received a filled-out questionnaire.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in Kentucky has a similar Facebook posting featuring an image of a marijuana leaf, and officials say they got the idea from the McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia.

KCC provides $29K over discrimination allegation

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Corporation Commission has provided nearly $30,000 to its former general counsel over allegations of disabilities discrimination.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports the KCC, which regulates public utilities including electric and water companies, settled with its former attorney Dana Bradbury for $29,458. The newspaper received a copy of the settlement in response to an open records request.

The settlement contains no admission of wrongdoing or liability on the part of the KCC.

Documents showed the settlement was over allegations of discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The KCC approved the settlement on April 23 after a closed executive session.

The agreement doesn’t provide any additional information regarding the alleged discrimination but says Bradbury also filed a charge of discrimination with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in February.

Letter to the Post: Russell chamber offers clarification on ad sales

Screen Shot 2015-08-05 at 10.36.53 AM

It was brought to my attention late yesterday that many businesses have been visited by Mr. Jason Miller. For those of you who have not yet been visited by him, he is an advertising consultant with Direct Advertising Consultants out of Washington, MO. He is selling advertising for a magnetic white board, he is not a scam.

Although he is not a scam he does mention that he is working with the Chamber on this project, and that is not correct. Jason has only visited with me to inquire about a few of our local businesses. The Chamber does not receive any benefit to what he is doing. I was informed by him that I might receive a few of the magnets, but only what was left over, which may not be very many.

I apologize for any confusion this may have created. Again, please be aware that Jason is not working with the Chamber. Purchase advertising at your own discretion. If you have any questions regarding the matter please contact me.

Thank you,

Hays commission to consider new travel plaza development request

big creek travel plaza
UPDATE: Travel plaza proposal pulled from Thursday agenda.

By BECKY KISER
Hays Post

Hays city commissioners will review a development proposal Thursday evening for the Big Creek Travel Plaza.

Michael Woofter of NWK Investments, Colby, wants to develop 23 acres of land at the northwest corner of 230th Avenue and 55th Street. The area would have to be annexed into the city and also have municipal infrastructure extended to it.

The developer wants the city to allow two funding incentives—a Tax Increment Finance (TIF) district and a Community Improvement District (CID)–to help finance the $28 million project, and to create the necessary water, sewer, and street infrastructure.

According to Hays City Manager Toby Dougherty, the requested incentives may amount to $21 million over 22 years.  The developer has offered to finance, construct, and oversize the infrastructure.

Dougherty said city staff has given the proposal a favorable recommendation to commissioners.

“If this project is developed as it is presented, the city will receive added sales tax monies. We looked at direct costs and direct revenues and the project does pan out even with the incentives,” Dougherty said.

big creek travel infrastructureThe project would create a travel plaza, restaurants and hotel on the property.

In addition to increased sales taxes, Dougherty said there are other benefits to the community at large with the proposed water main improvements, which would create additional water sales tax. Transient guest tax revenues would also increase.

The new property taxes would be used for the TIF for the first few years, Dougherty added.

NWK Investments expects the project would create 69 full-time and 46 part-time jobs.

Ellis Co. Dept. of Emergency Management hosts PIO training course in Hays

By COOPER SLOUGH
Hays Post

The Ellis County Department of Emergency Management hosted a basic public information officer training course last Wednesday at the Ellis County Emergency Operations Center. The day-long course, designed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is intended to allow new PIOs the opportunity to get an understanding of proper media relations and information disclosure procedures.

PIOs span a wide range of professions, from hospital spokespeople to law enforcement and public safety personnel.

Along with the curriculum, students were also visited by a panel of media professionals. Becky Kiser of Eagle Communications/Hays Post; Mike Corn of the Hays Daily News newspaper; and Callie Kolacny, former Eagle Radio reporter and current director of marketing with Smoky Hills Public Television, met with PIOs from across the region to address concerns about media needs and expectations.

“We always appreciate the local media coming to participate,” said Bill Ring, Ellis County Emergency Management Coordinator. “It’s nice to have that interaction away from the scene (of an emergency).”

The Ellis County course takes place once a year, catering mostly to PIOs from northwest Kansas. Courses are offered statewide year-round.

KBI investigating Reno Co. officer involved shooting

HUTCHINSON – Law enforcement authorities in Reno County are investigating an officer involved shooting

Hutchinson Police reported in a media release that officers responded to 903 East Ave. C just before 10:45 p.m. on Tuesday after the report of a disturbed subject.

Police say the suspect identified as Joseph Ramon, 23, was threatening his father at that residence and had fled on foot.

Ramon could not be located. Officers reported the incident and left the area.

A few hours later officers were sent to the same address again after the suspect returned to the residence.

When officers arrived on scene they found Ramon in the garage of the residence. The suspect pointed a shotgun at the officers forcing their retreat.

Ramon eventually shot a hole through the garage door, placed the barrel of the shotgun through the hole and fired several more times near the officers.

The suspect then immediately pointed the shotgun directly at the officers at which time the officers were forced to fire upon the suspect.

Seconds later Ramon opened the garage door and came out unarmed. Officers placed him into custody without further incident.

Ramon was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his hand. There were no injuries to anyone else, including officers.

A full investigation of this incident is underway by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation
